"You get taught that you are something but the truth is, it's not true and it's just a story. It could be a story that people told to you and then you start telling that story enough to yourself until you get to this place where you truly believe, 'That's it for me.' When you listen to Khalil Rafati's story you'll likely be in disbelief. At 33, he was broke and broken. At 109lbs, he had spent the past several years battling a serious drug problem, which ultimately derailed him and left him on the streets of California. His battle with drug addiction sent him on a downward spiral with no end in sight. It wasn't until June 18th, 2003, when Khalil finally snapped. He had reached the end of the road and decided enough was enough: he had to get sober. He tossed all of his prescriptions in the trash and left the hospital, accepting an impending struggle. The next few days left him in the darkest place of his life. The absence of the prescriptions and heroin left him on his knees - in the darkest place of his life. It was the beginning of his turnaround, but it didn't come without a cost. The pain he suffered through those withdrawals propelled him forward. He surrendered to God and began making some serious changes in his life. After getting sober, Khalil began to reconstruct his life and now he's a successful entrepreneur, owning the smoothie bar, Sunlife Organics, author of the book I Forgot to Die, and angel investor in several incredible brands. What living life well means to Philipp at the end of the day Power Quotes From The Show Neutralizing Harmful EMFs with Quantum Energy "The pure quantum energy field can eliminate or neutralize harmful and destructive frequencies. Negative energy can become imprinted in matter but if you were to place a piece of meat in the Leela Quantum Bloc, for example, you will be able to neutralize, reset, and optimize its energetic structure so that you don't take in any harmful frequencies it may have been carrying." - Philipp Samor von Holtzendorff-Fehling Letting Go of Trauma with Leela "When we come into this world we already have a 'backpack' of experiences including trauma from possibly past lives, stories, our family's history and we carry that with us but we also add to it. We add experiences we have in our current lifetimes whether that's accidents, a traumatic birth, abuse, embarrassment, and more but the path of life is really to release more and more stuff from the 'backpack' so that you can be freer and the Leela Quantum Bloc helps with that release." - Philipp Samor von Holtzendorff-Fehling What Life is All About "Life is not about getting anywhere quicker; we should focus on being content in the moment rather than putting all of our energy on being someone else or somewhere else. The more of our consciousness that we can unlock, the happier we will be, the lighter our load will be, and the freer we will feel. That is what happiness is in the end: being our authentic selves and finding peace within ourselves." - Philipp Samor von Holtzendorff-Fehling Links From Today's Show  Philipp Samor von Holtzendorff-Fehling Meet the Healers at Leela Roman Christian Hafner 439 Khalil Rafati breathwork.io Leela Quantum Tech's research Water Structure Study - Emoto Institute Japan Bully A Plant: Say No To Bullying The power of the placebo effect 361 Luke Storey 449 Hearts Wide Open | Identifying & Healing Core Wounds To Live Your Vision Heart Math institute  404 Jay Brown David R. He is a coach, conscious entrepreneur, alpha chi teacher and energy healer. In parallel to a successful international business career he constantly worked through blockages and barriers that prevented him to truly connect with his true self. With that he started to also see energy fields and developed his unique skills as a healer. His core competency is to transform energetic blockages, and to open the hidden treasures within one's self. He understands how it is to have forgotten who we are, why we are here, and how blocked we can be in regards to remembering and accessing our true inner nature, power and consciousness. His passion is to help others free their potential, and to help spread “tools” in the world that can act as a bridge for humans on the path to fully unlocking the access to our full consciousness, e.g., Carbon 60 as well as quantum and frequency technology.

Similarities he kept seeing pop up like seeing specific animals in groups of three plus the powerful symbols of animals. 425 Alyson Charles The moment Khalil tried plant medicine for the first time and though he was nervous as a former addict, he knew it was time and something he was supposed to do for his healing journey. Why Khalil would not advise anyone newly recovering from drug addiction (0-10 years sober) to try plant medicine.   [1:51:00] Using Plant Medicine Responsibly Why it's so important to use other tools like breathwork, therapy, float tanks, or journaling to help you heal trauma before you even consider doing plant medicine. The dangers of doing plant medicine ceremonies, especially ill-prepared ones, all the time. Why it's not good to do a plant medicine ceremony for only the purpose of getting high; in that scenario, you're basically a drug addict. What can happen if a plant medicine ceremony goes wrong like it did for Josh and why it's so important to be financially stable to help you should you need it. Why you have to look out for unearned wisdom when you try Ayahuasca. Tim Ferriss:An Urgent Plea to Users of Psychedelics: Let's Consider a More Ethical Menu of Plants and Compounds The importance of holding yourself with loving awareness when you go into a plant medicine ceremony. Why it's not spiritual to have multiple partners; the sacred reunion lies in monogamy no matter your sexual orientation. The power of love and why it's greater than anything else in the world. Why they love living in Austin, Texas so much, especially for its welcoming community. The downside of fame and why it's basically a prison mentally, emotionally, and physically.   [2:11:00] The Healing Power of Community Unpacking what suffering and shame really are and how to move through it. His advice for anyone trying to recover from addiction for the first time. How doing group workouts and suffering with other people made him realize that pushing through these hard things isn't really suffering when you have community. Why anyone can heal, succeed, and find happiness if they really want to go after their goals. The powerful truth that we all get what we want but you have to figure out what that is and take action to make it come true. What wellness means to Khalil after all of the experiences he has had in life. How he sets healthy boundaries for himself and his schedule. Khalil's own self-awareness about what he posts on Instagram and how that impacts him and those who follow his feed.   Power Quotes From The Show What Pain Has Personally Taught Khalil "In my life, pain truly is the touchstone of all spiritual growth. I personally cannot find the humility or the intelligence or the inspiration to have great breakthroughs; I'm just not wired like that. I have to fall down flat on my face or mess up in order to grow, succeed, and have that humility. Other people do not have to experience rock bottom like I did to do the inner work and begin healing but that was and still is my wellness journey." - Khalil Rafati   Become the Author of Your Own Story "At a certain point in your life, you cannot rely on your parents anymore. You have to live in sovereignty and take full responsibility for everything that is going on in your life whether it's good or bad. You have to realize that you are the author of your own book of life. The good news is that there is a God or Source that you can turn to when you need it and if you go into your day with an attitude of gratitude, you're going to attract amazing things in your life." - Khalil Rafati   The Destination Is The Journey "I didn't start SunLife Organics until I was 41 and I know people who at 25 are stressed that they don't know what they want to do with their life. If you knew what you wanted to do with the rest of your life at 25, I would be scared for you because the destination is the journey. You're supposed to struggle, be confused, be disenchanted, and go through hardships in life to grow, learn who you are, and find out what you want." - Khalil Rafati Links From Today's Show  SunLife Organics Malibu Beach Yoga Riviera Recovery I Forgot to Die by Khalil Rafati Remembering to Live by Khalil Rafati Be Here Now by Ram Das Gabor Maté 431 David Wolfe 361 Luke Storey Eben Britton Alan Watts Paul Chek | All is God 438 Justin Donald The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse 275 Paul Chek Joe Dispenza Bruce Lipton Tony Robbins Mel Robbins Dr. Kyra Bobinet The Secret trailer Think and Grow Rich trailer Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz Around the Year with Emmet Fox: A Book of Daily Readings Lao Tzu 436 Dr. John Lieurance MitoZen 401 JW Ross 400 Cal Callahan Michael Pollan Ben Greenfield 425 Alyson Charles Tim Ferriss:An Urgent Plea to Users of Psychedelics: Let's Consider a More Ethical Menu of Plants and Compounds Shop the Wellness Force Store breathwork.io Paleovalley – Save 15% on your ACV Complex with the code ‘JOSH' Seeking Health - Save 10% with the code 'JOSH' Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, you only cover the cost of shipping Botanic Tonics – Save 40% when you use the code ‘WELLNESS40' Essential Oil Wizardry: Save 10% with the code 'WELLNESSFORCE' Cured Nutrition – Get 15% off of your order when you visit wellnessforce.com/cured + use the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes Khalil Rafati Instagram About Khalil Rafati Khalil Rafati is a speaker, author, and health & wellness entrepreneur. With a childhood defined by an almost endless barrage of abuse from the people closest to him, and an early adulthood filled with all manner of destructive coping mechanisms in response to those tragic early years, Khalil Rafati had a long road ahead of him to rewire his mind and direct his energy toward the good. From a life of family trauma, homelessness, substance abuse, and at one point being a convicted felon, Khalil has completely transformed his life. Today, Khalil is still addicted—only he has switched out the drugs and alcohol for superfoods and juices. His passion for health led him to found SunLife Organics, a rapidly growing chain of health food cafés with locations in California, Texas, and Arizona. He shares his unique approach to service, which includes allowing his staff to offer items on the house if the customer has recently fallen on hard times. “A lot of people come into SunLife not just for the human connection,” says Khalil. “A lot of people come into SunLife as a lighthouse in the storm.” Beyond the smoothies, Khalil believes that SunLife's customers come in to be loved, and his ultimate job is to shower them with the love, healing, and inspiration they crave.   Follow Khalil @khalilrafati Follow SunLife Organics @sunlifeorganics Follow Chase @chase_chewning   Episode resources: Save 20% with code EVERFORWARD on Organifi at http://organifi.com/everforward Learn more about Khalil and SunLife Organics at https://chasechewning.com/podcasts/episode/502

Khalil has an incredibly inspiring life story. He went from working with Hollywood stars and rock musicians to hitting rock bottom at 33. Homeless, addicted to heroin and cocaine, living on the streets of Los Angeles, a high school dropout, and convicted felon. His prospects seemed pretty slim. In 2003 he decided to get sober. A friend of his introduced him to juicing and superfoods and the results for him were instant. He felt life coming back to him and into his body. Wanting more of that, this gave him a purpose, which became his passion. Fast forward, after being able to travel the world discovering and learning everything he could about the best that nature could offer regarding nutritional ingredients he and his business partner in 2011 opened their first SunLife Organics location in southern California. A place that Khalil could share everything he's learned. Today they have multiple locations throughout the LA area and with another in Austin, TX. He tells his story in his first best-selling book "I Forgot To Die", which is available on Amazon. Khalil proves without a doubt that anything is possible with determination, purpose, passion, and a desire to make your life better than it was before. He's carved out a pretty sweet life for himself and continues to inspire people daily on his Instagram page and through his business accounts. It was my pleasure having Khalil on the podcast. I was introduced to Khalil Rafati and SunLife Organics through my friends at Rhone.  I tried one of SunLifes amazing Bowls and heard a little bit about his story.  Soon after I heard Khalil on the Skinny Confidential His & Her Podcast and knew I had to have him on Excuse the Disruption.  Khalils story is one you think could only happen in the movies, and I couldn't do it any justice in this text, you will have to hear it straight from him.  In our conversation he takes me down the path that lead him to rock bottom (an addict, felon, living on the streets homeless in LA) to his recovery, becoming sober and starting one of the most iconic wellness brands in LA (and soon to be nationwide). Regardless of where you are in life, what you have been through or what you have accomplished, I think you will get a lot out of this episode.  If you want to learn more about Khalil, his Book or SunLife Organics see the links below.   Hope you enjoy instagram.com/khalilrafati I Forgot Die (Book) sunlifeorganics

If you’ve ever struggled with substance abuse, or are the loved one of someone with addiction problems, today’s transformational episode is for you. We are joined with Khalil Rafati, author of I Forgot to Die, owner of SunLife Organics, and founder of the transitional living facility, Riviera Recovery.   The son of immigrants, Khalil describes his childhood, especially school, as riddled with racism and bullying. At home, he dealt with violence, neglect, and sexual abuse, which triggered decades of self-hatred. Khalil found alcohol and marijuana at a young age, eventually dropped out of high-school, and found himself in a downward spiral of heroin and cocaine abuse.   At 33 years old and 109 pounds, living on Skid Row in Los Angeles, he decided to get sober.  He takes us back to the moment that he chose life over death and we get an in depth, raw look at his journey to overcome addiction.Khalil also shares his thoughts on money’s role in happiness, his relationship with God, and his love of crystals.     Be on the lookout for his second book (working title of Remembering to Live) and upcoming documentary, as well as SunLife Organics smoothie/juice bars opening near you!   We also talk about: Transforming life & health through food and nutrition Khalil’s rituals and self-care routine Astral projection experience as a child The dangers of EMF & ways to block it How media and music influence & desensitize us   Find more to love at almost30podcast.com!   Resources: Learn more: sunlifeorganics.com Instagram: @khalilrafati ; @iforgottodiebook Book: I Forgot to Die   Upcoming Events: July 27th: San Francisco with Lacy Phillips August 17th: The Workshop by PodcastPro in Los Angeles with K + L   Sponsors: Silver Fern | Use code ALMOST30 for 20% off your first order at silverfernbrand.com Cured Nutrition | ALMOST30 for $10 off $50 or more at curednutrition.com  Calm | Get 25% off a Calm premium subscription at www.calm.com/almost30  Pair of Thieves | Use code ALMOST30 for 20% off first order at pairofthieves.com/almost30 Simple Contacts | Use code ALMOST to save $20 at simplecontacts.com/almost Almost 30 is edited by Crate Media

This week’s episode features special guest Lauryn Evarts Bosstick from The Skinny Confidential.  She joins us to talk about her goals with her brand, being her authentic self, and dealing with a family member’s addiction. The Skinny Confidential has become a multi-platform brand full of blog posts, social media content, podcast episodes, and even YouTube videos.  From wellness, to business tips, to life advice, Lauryn has it all covered. Talk about total lady boss! Lauryn’s goal is to stay as authentic as possible with her followers and show them that it’s okay to have a balance of health and fun.  Or as she calls it, “holding kale in one hand and champagne in the other.” Hilarious! Having this balance between healthy living and doing whatever the F you want is really important, especially in our age of social media. Lauryn has no shame in sharing her experience getting plastic surgery, while still sharing the message of health and self-love. We need to be more accepting of those choosing to enhance their appearance. There is no shame in the botox game! Just remember not to compare yourself to others no matter your body type. You do you, and don’t care about what others think. This mantra has even helped Lauryn get through pushback she’s had online.  She is a self-proclaimed over-sharer (perfect influencer personality!), and totally accepts hat not everyone is going to be on board with her and her journey. #ANDSOITIS Not only does Lauryn stay true to her authentic self, she also wants her followers to be informed, which is why she brings incredible experts onto her podcast. (Seriously, listen to this episode with Khalil Rafati owner of Sun Life Organics) This brings the perfect mix between authenticity and relying on authoritative perspective to her audience. “You have to be your own guru.”  Lauryn always tells her audience to go out and do research on their own.  If you are unsure about something, gain knowledge and form your own opinion.  Don’t just blindly follow everyone else. This is what makes The Skinny Confidential’s brand so relatable and popular.  Authenticity is really important to followers nowadays.  We are stepping away from that perfectly curated feed, and leaning toward a more realistic image. We want the in-between scenes, not just the highlight reel, of an influencer’s life.  Sharing your struggles and being real is highly valued. Lauryn has helped pave the way, and has done so by sharing her story on her podcast.  A big part of her journey was handling her sister’s addictions and recovery. As a family member of an addict, she found it really difficult to relinquish control and allow growth to occur naturally. “It’s hard to watch someone you love and care about kill themselves in front of you and there’s nothing you can do about it.” The best thing you can do is stop trying to control your loved one’s situation, and allow them to see reality and the bottom for themselves.  Her family’s experience has given her a lot of empathy for family members of addicts, even for her own parents. Once her family broke that cycle of co-dependence, things started to look up. There are plenty of ways you can support a family member going through recovery.  One way is to join a support group yourself, so you can gain some perspective. You can join groups like Families United for Recovery, which was started by Alexis’ mom.  Or you can go to free groups hosted by recovery centers, like the weekly groups at Alo. Remember: recovery is not linear.  There will always be highs and many lows, so as long as you stay in tune with your loved one’s journey and come from a place of love and respect, healing will take place. Speaking of love, there is an aspect of love that tends to go unnoticed for many women, especially moms.  And that is self-love! We need to find ways to wind down after a hard day, that doesn’t necessarily involve opening a bottle of wine. Alexis explains a few ways she winds down, this includes spending time with her daughters, long showers, body scrubs, essential oils, and acknowledging her feelings, instead of suppressing them. Learning to talk yourself in a way that is nourishing can be more beneficial than you think. Lauryn loves to practice grounding/earthing, whether that is sticking your toes in the sand at the beach, or walking barefoot on the grass. Getting in touch with nature is a great way to unwind. From eucalyptus leaves to salt lamps, Lauryn is a wealth of information when it comes to self-care! And this is only a fraction of what you can find on her blog. Lastly, we can’t talk about self-care without addressing our love/hate relationship with social media.  It can be hard to disconnect, especially when you are trying to build a brand that requires a lot of content and engagement.  Just thinking about all we “should” be and do puts a weight on our shoulders, and leaves an open door for anxiety and depression to enter. As someone who produces lots of content each day, Lauryn knows that a healthy balance is important to keeping your sanity.  She tries to put more energy into creating content than consuming content. And when she does, she is careful about who and what she is looking at.  If we are feeding ourselves with negativity from certain accounts, we need to take a step back. Instead, we can start following people that make us do and feel better. Try limiting your scrolling time on Instagram and narrowing down the stories you watch to about 5 accounts, some of her favorite business accounts being Ed Mylett and Gary Vaynerchuk.  She also recently spoke to the author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck, and his biggest advice was becoming more disciplined about the type of content you are consuming online.   This way, if certain accounts are making you depressed, just unfollow. We’ve all been there and could use a good cleanse once in a while! Ultimately, learning to be your own guru, finding what works for you, and living as your authentic self is going to bring you joy.  If you want more info on how to reach these goals, check out Lauryn’s podcast, The Skinny Confidential, and stay tuned for a special round table episode she has in store!   #ANDSOITIS If you or someone you love needs help, visit Alo House Recovery.

#187: This episode may be one of the most if not the most powerful episode we have ever done! Khalil Rafati had reached the peak of suffering. He was 33 years old, weighed 109 pounds, and was living homeless on the streets of LA on Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles. He was addicted to heroin and cocaine and was quite literally on the brink of death. The craziest part of this, Khalil was very connected in LA. Prior to this he worked for the estate of Elizabeth Taylor and had connections with some of Hollywood’s most elite including Guns & Roses, and Anthony Keidis. So how did Khalil fall so far? Addiction. And this podcast goes deep into the story of addiction and the path to recovery. Fast Forward to 2019. Khalil is completely sober, looks like a completely different person and is the founder and owner of the wildly popular fresh juice, food, and clean living franchise Sun Life Organics. On this episode we discuss quite literally what it takes to claw your way out of the depths of hell. Today they have 10 locations and 4 more babies on the way this year, with no intention of stopping any time soon. When you hear Khalil’s story, you’ll understand the intimately deep desire to surround himself with the healthiest things in this world, thus born SunLife Organics, and his yoga studio Malibu Beach Yoga. Homeless and addicted, Khalil hit a rock bottom that may seem impossibly irreversible. He’s redefined the word transformation, rewritten the story of a Phoenix rising. “If I can do it, you can” tends to fall short. This is a true story. Khalil Rafati DIED, and then... he was rejected from the "dark side". Given a second chance to face the world and CHANGE! From cocaine addict to cacao expert! From heroin dependent to hempseed hero! From skid row habitant to living with SUNLIFE or better yet, the sunny side of life! Yes, an abusive childhood and extreme lack of self-esteem brought Khalil on the fast track to spiraling down to a dead beat lifestyle. He died. But then, he forgot to completely disappear. Now he is BACK and has created a high vibrational company with a larger message attached to it: "BE HERE NOW". I have to admit something. I too feel at times as though I am struggling in this life. I know that I am completely and utterly very fortunate - but one cannot help feelings, am I right? Khalil's objective is to go beyond the task of simply "making smoothies" - He wants to create a space of health and hope. "It was tough, but by the grace of God I am alive and happy now. I am grateful to be where I am and would not be in the position I am in had I not gone through all that pain. Strange paradox, but my reality nonetheless. That's why I chose the pink lotus as the symbol for SunLife Organics. From the mud and the darkness grows a beautiful flower. That's why I chose the name SunLife. Life in the Sun. It's not just a catchy name and logo, it's who we are." A bit about Khalil's journey through this interview: **"In 2003, I had reached the peak of suffering the high cost of low living. I was 33 years old, weighed 109 pounds and was living on the streets of Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles, addicted to heroin and cocaine. With nowhere to go but up, I decided to get sober. Although the future started looking brighter, I was still smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, eating junk food and drinking copious amounts of coffee and energy drinks. I always felt completely drained and devoid of energy. Depression was a constant. I was soon introduced to juicing and superfoods by a friend of mine. The results were remarkable and instantaneous. I began to feel alive again— my anxiety quickly replaced by excitement and a renewed lust for life. I started getting more and more adventurous in my kitchen, trying to find a way to make all these amazing natural remedies more palatable, even crave-able, so they would be a part of my daily routine that I looked forward to. So began my journey (some would say obsession) with finding and consuming the best products nature has to offer. I travelled extensively all over India, Indonesia and Central America, constantly asking questions, learning everything I could from gurus to surf bums, Ayurvedic doctors to street vendors. Here in the States, I explored what traditional Western medicine had to offer. I also went to longevity specialists, as well as a handful of so-called ‘healers’. In the end, I found that the truth was not much different than what most people’s grandmothers advised: ‘eat your fruits and veggies’. By eating a diet of organic whole foods— with the addition of some superfoods, regular exercise, a lot of love and compassion from friends and neighbors, and a daily practice of trying to do good deeds for others without getting caught— I found that I didn’t need a guru or ‘healer’ or Western medicine to recover. In 2011, after joining forces with my business partner Hayley Gorcey, we opened the doors to the first SunLife Organics in Malibu, California with a simple mission: to love, heal and inspire. We wanted to share with our friends, neighbors and members of the community an opportunity to experience what I had— to provide access to true nourishment. We wanted a place where people could go for organic juices, organic smoothies, organic salads, organic everything really. But beyond that, we wanted a place where we could come together and re-connect as a community, away from our iPads, smartphones, and "social networks"; a place to elevate the human spirit and help us get back to basics. We wanted to hire kids from the local community and provide a fun, safe and sober environment for them to learn, grow and thrive. Every day, we aim to provide the best example we can for operating a business with the well being of people and the planet in mind. SunLife Organics isn’t a juice bar. It’s an experience fueled by the simple but profound joy of human connection and an unrelenting commitment to quality. We hope to see you soon." What are the best plant-based eating resources? (NNP #13)

What’s in our toolbox? What resources do we use to support us in living a plant based lifestyle? This week Claire and Andrew Davies list all the key influencers that first made them try plant-based eating and that now continue to inspire and inform them. Not surprisingly considering their background in healthcare, the ‘Big Four’, Drs T. Colin Campbell (The China Study), Caldwell Esselstyn (Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease), Michael Greger (How Not to Die, nutritionfacts.org) and Dean Ornish (Program For Reversing Heart Disease) focus heavily in this discussion. Another influencer is of course plant based ultra endurance athlete, Rich Roll, who via The Rich Roll Podcast has interviewed several plant-based gurus including Colin Campbell and Michael Greger, in addition to other doctors such as Neal Barnard, Garth Davis, Robynne Chutkan and Robert Ostfeld. The evidence based information they discuss is very helpful in understanding the health benefits of plant-based eating. Rich’s interviews with individuals such as Josh LaJaunie, Fully Raw Kristina and Khalil Rafati provide inspiration and motivation with their personal stories of the power of plants in their own lives. Rich Roll and his wife, Julie Piatt, have also written The Plantpower Way, a cookbook that was a key resource to Claire and Andrew. Other cookbooks they refer to include Vegan Goodness by Jessica Prescott, A Modern Way to Eat by Anna Jones, River Cottage Veg Everyday by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, all the books by Yotam Ottolenghi, Community by Hetty McKinnon, The Wholefood Pantry by Belle Gibson and Sweet Greek by Kathy Tsaples. Watching films and documentaries are a great way to receive a lot of information packaged up in a format that is easy to follow and can be shared together. Claire and Andrew describe how ‘Forks over Knives’ was the main reason they finally committed to stop eating meat and animal products. Other films of influence include What the Health, Cowspiracy, The Connection, Supersize Me and That Sugar Film. Connection with others on the same journey in community groups as well as attending retreats and immersions such as those conducted by Rich Roll and Julie Piatt can be incredibly helpful in moving forward and making a bigger commitment to eating more plants. Attending events such as the recent What the Health screenings, that are still happening around Australia, are a great way to boost motivation levels and meet others who are seeking a ‘new normal’.

Entrepreneur Khalil Rafati is arguably the least likely entrepreneur out there. Many years ago, the former heroin and crack addict left Toledo, Ohio after getting into some serious scrapes with the law. He ended up living in a shed in Malibu where he and a roommate shot drugs by the light generated by Fast Times at Ridgemont High (which they played over and over again on a VCR that was powered by electricity they were siphoning from next door). Finally washing ashore at Pasadena Recovery Center, Rafati got sober but still found himself unfulfilled and awash with anxiety and the feeling that his life wasn't happening the way he'd hoped. After filling up on Tony Robbins and getting inspired by Oprah, he set about changing that, opening first a Malibu Sober Living and then SunLife Organics, a juice shop that had lines out the door from day one and has now spread to numerous other locations. Now Rafati is sharing his unlikely success story in his just released memoir, I Forgot to Die (available on Amazon as well as at SunLife). In this episode, we discuss what happens when a combination of ecstasy and pills changes your life, what it feels like to be able to buy your mom a house and how to let go of the sad story you tell yourself, among many other topics.
