This week's featured story comes from the Martin & Sylvia collection. It's called "Pirates." “Yo ho ho” and “Shiver me timbers!” are not what is usually heard on Town Lake during Lake Days, but this year Pirates have invaded the event, complete with head scarves, gnarly beards, and thick pirate accents. Could that be Martin in the black pirate's hat? Could that be Sylvia at the helm of the pirate canoe? Could that be Daddy leading them to invade a friend's sailboat and attempt to steal some "booty"? Tempe Town Lake is a project whose development no one would call perfect, but one that most people seem pretty happy about how it turned out. The lake celebrated its 25th anniversary recently. It's one of those things that seems like it can't have been that long ago, and yet it seems like it's always been there. This week on Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, we talked to a couple of people who were instrumental in getting the lake project done. Neil Giuliano was mayor of Tempe when it finally happened, and Diana Kaminski played all kinds of roles in the project. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Back again after a much-needed hiatus from Clown World doomscrolling - it's time for Episode XXV of ‘The Teddy Brosevelt Show'! Episode 25 was the first (and probably the last) show to be recorded outdoors. Thought it would be cool to record Episode 25 near a van down by the river. During post-production, however, I discovered why most folks record podcasts inside. Way less ambient noise from chickens, roosters and rustling leaves. EPISODE 25 TOPICS:Joe Biden announced $10,000 student loan forgiveness program that will cost taxpayers $300 billion. I thought buying votes was illegal in the United States. But it seems like Joe Biden is granted immunity from this law.Remember back in January 2021 (with control of the U.S. Senate hanging in the balance) when president-elect Joe Biden guaranteed that $2000 stimulus checks would be sent “immediately” if Georgians cast their votes for Democratic candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in the run-off election? Biden also warned voters that "those checks will never get there" if they voted for the two Republican incumbents (Sen. David Perdue and Sen. Kelly Loeffler). That sounds like buying votes to me! Vote Democrat in January 2021, and get you free $2000 stimulus check immediately. Vote Democrat during the November 2022 midterms, and we might just forgive the rest of your student loan balance.California will prohibit the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035. Start saving for your $65,000 electric vehicle now. Make sure you put aside $10,000 for maintenance and repairs, since you won't be able to do-it-yourself with these vehicles. The new bivalent Covid vaccine sounds super safe. With this newly updated formula, you only have a 1 in 1000 chance of having “temporary one-sided facial drooping (Bell's palsy)”. Just like Justin Bieber! This new mRNA Shot also features warnings about myocarditis, pericarditis and capillary leak syndrome flare-ups, which cause fluid leakage from small blood vessels, rapid swelling of the arms and legs, sudden weight gain and low blood pressure. Roll up your sleeves, suckers! CNBC should be deplatformed and permanently banished from the internet after posting this article: ‘Do Americans Have a Vitamin D Problem?”. CNBC insists that it's “irresponsible to even test patients for vitamin D deficiencies”. And don't even think about taking Vitamin D supplements. You might overdose and put yourself in danger. Want proof? CNBC reports that some guy in England was taking 150,000 IU's of Vitamin D per day, and it didn't go well for him. Who could have imagined that swallowing an entire bottle of Vitamin D pills every 48 hours might not be an effective health strategy? CNBC claims that it's “irresponsible” to test for Vitamin D levels, and you should wait until you start breaking bones during simple activities before you consult your doctor. I'm totally serious. CNBC interviewed a doctor that actually said: “If you're breaking bones during simple activities, experiencing bone pain to the touch or feeling enough muscle pain or weakness to keep you from being able to comfortably get out of chairs, you should consult your doctor about a potential vitamin D deficiency.” China announced it has started geoengineering rain to alleviate drought conditions. China has already started seeding clouds using silver iodide rods to induce rainfall. Check out our two-part series on the harmful ramifications from Geoengineering in Episode #14 and Episode #15, with special guest Blue Canaries. During Episode 24, I said I would be focusing this podcast back towards national and world news. But I had to comment on a couple major stories that have happened in Austin over the past 20 days since I've been away. Three people shot or stabbed to death on Sixth Street, along with a dead body discovered by a horrified jogger along the Town Lake hike and bike trail at 6 am yesterday morning and another body found in Zilker Park this morning. Plus Awful Austin Mayor Steve Adler joins the advisory board of Pacaso, a so-called ‘Prop Tech Unicorn' that is doing a tremendous job of pissing people off from coast-to-coast. Everything Teddy ever said about Mayor Adler over the past two years was 100% accurate and way too mild. Pacaso is the shadiest, greediest company in America. Mayor Adler a greedy, selfish jerk who ruined one of the cleanest, safest and most affordable cities in North America. Kudos, props and shout-outs to Austin heroes Brad Swail (host of ‘The Austin City Councilman' podcast') and Clinton Rarey (best candidate for Austin City Council District 1)Much, much more on everything that has transpired since the last episode was posted three weeks ago. LIVE A GREAT STORY • Simple words. Such diversity in what these words mean from person to person. Zach Horvath joined me in Episode 20 live from Eazy's Listening Room & Studio. Zach developed his brand, Live a Great Story, after going out one night with a can of red spray paint, and spraying the words on a pillar over Town Lake underneath Mopac Bridge. People began taking pictures and sharing these simple words. Zach decided to roll with it, and create a logo that can now be spotted all over the world. • In this podcast we dove right into Zach's story, and talked about how good it is for our minds to travel. What traveling gave us, opening our minds, and the insights we gained from being exposed to different people's perspectives around the world. What happened next exceeded all of Zach and I's expectations of what would transpire. We asked several individuals to share what they had written, but everyone shared in such an authentic capacity that we couldn't stop. Everyone that joined us that night got the opportunity to share, and we selected a few of the best to feature on this podcast. • As usual the microphone was passed around the room, and 40-50 people all shared the moment they were most proud of in their lives. It was beautiful that a bunch of strangers could interact in this way, and feel safe enough to be as vulnerable as every one was. It is a moment I will never forget, and showed us the possibility of what we had created. Listen to people share from their hearts, listen to the diversity in what they are proud of, and think about how it differs from what you yourself are proud of. I felt something shift inside of me when this was happening, and is a feeling I will seek time and time again. Thank you to everyone that made it out for this episode. It was truly special to share. • We decided to hand out cards as people walked in to the studio, and gave them the opportunity to fill out the following: “Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” - Howard Thurman Before you jump into the evening, take a second to reflect on what accomplishment has made you feel truly alive. Big or small, internal or external. A part of your journey you'll remember for your whole life. Write it here: _________________________________________________________________________ Now grab a drink, meet some new people and instead of the usual questions you ask strangers, dive a little deeper into the important parts of life... theirs and yourself. Ask meaningful questions, listen, tune in. Thank you, Anonymous P.S. Be prepared, we might pass you the mic to expand more on your aliveness. • Guest: @commonvandal Businesses: @liveagreatstory • Bringing the conversation of community & culture to Austin, TX.

After losing her son, Luke, halfway through her pregnancy in 2011, Lisa was led to meet the needs of the pregnancy and infant loss community. She received her 501c3 just a mere 10 months after her loss. The mission of "Luke Lives On" is to provide support, comfort and resources to families who have lost a child during pregnancy or shortly after birth. This is done through the gift of a comfort box filled with various resources to help the family navigate their grieving to healing journey. Her goal is to ultimately help these families realize they are not alone in their journey. In fact, one in four pregnancies results in miscarriage or some other form of loss."Luke Lives On" donates the comfort boxes to hospitals and individuals nationwide. Since the inception in December 2011, LLO has partnered with 26 hospitals and has donated nearly 4,000 boxes.Lisa is a native southwest Austinite. In her spare time she enjoys running at Town Lake, traveling and live music. She is looking forward to partnering with Mindy and continuing to spread awareness for the pregnancy and infant loss community.Calls to Action Be Available – whether it’s someone dealing with the loss of their baby, a parent, a friend…just let them know you care about them and that you’re available for them when they’re ready. You don’t have to fix anything or have all the answers. You just need to genuinely listen and be there for them when they’re ready to talk.Remember the Important Dates – for those who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss, the angel birthdays and due dates are very important! Note them in your calendar. Reach out on those days and let them know their son/daughter is not forgotten.Don’t Minimize Loss – Loss hurts at six weeks. It hurts at 40 weeks. It hurts everywhere in-between. The loss of a child shouldn’t be minimized by their gestational age. Those babies are someone’s sons and daughters. Many of them were very much wanted and prayed for. Saying words like, “at least you were only “so” far along in your pregnancy”, or “you can always have another”, or at least you’ve already got a living child” is not helpful and doesn’t reduce the pain of the child lost.ResourcesWe like to refer people to the resources page on our website for a comprehensive view of support: https://www.lukeliveson.org/resourcesSome of my personal favorites are:Websites or apps: https://stillstandingmag.com/http://facesofloss.com/https://www.october15th.com/www.1in4app.comLocal Support Group:Hope Perinatal Loss GroupBook:Grieving the Child I Never Knew, by Kathe Wunnenberg

One of the most spectacular fish kills in history hit the Colorado River in 1961 was traced to an East Austin “insect powder” factory. In the early 90's access television really started to kick into high gear all around the country, as evidenced by the Saturday Night Live skit Wayne's World. And that became so popular that it spun off into 2 feature length films. Before Dave, there was Scott Spurlock. He first caught me and my friends attention on ACTV with his show Dull-a-Vision; where he showed music videos, something akin to Headbangers Ball. But one fateful night in 1991, he went too far and showed us kids something that blew our minds! It was his edited video for this song "Rivers" from Skinny Puppy. It was too far! This was also the time of censorship and anti- obscenity and decency issues, spurred by Luke Skywalker and 2 Live Crew in Florida. Also, in Florida, poor Pee Wee Herman was arrested for watching a movie, albeit a dirty move. And Tipper Gore, her group was busy putting Parental Advisory Explicit Lyrics labels on CDs and tapes. Heck, the Australian rock band, the Divinyls were warned not to play their hit song "I Touch Myself" at their appearance at the Austin Aqua Fest on Town Lake, but near the end of the set, they did anyway. Their mic was cut and lead singer Chrissy Amphlett was dragged off stage by security, yep that's about as far as they got, too. And here is how the crowed reacted. And here is what the police claimed, but it was not too loud. But back to ACTV, where you could pay like $50 bucks, sign some forms and take a couple classes and you too could broadcast live on Austin television sets. ACTV, it gave rise to Alex Jones and Infowars, as you can hear him sitting in on the show with Dave: Here is a conspiracy for you; some folks think that the comedian Bill Hicks didn't actually die in 1994, but instead became Alex Jones. There are some similarities in appearance and like mindedness of both tone and topic. Dave Pruitt who did the final interview with Bill Hicks. But Dave, not only would he play hard rock music videos, but he would also take the ACTV cameras and equipment to local shows and showcase mostly local, but also national touring bands. He has recorded so many, please go out and find him at DaveTV on Youtube. He recorded everybody, but back in the day it was the likes of Pariah, Agony Column, Dangerous Toys, D.R.I., deadhorse, Retarded Elf, FUCKEMOS, Harrem Scarrum, Little Miss Dangerous, Onyxx, the Bad Livers and Dancyr. Yeah, Nathan Olivarez, he was there, too. Dave's partner in crime! However, I read in the Austin Chronicle that Dave has left the building. We wish you luck Dave! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tiny-curations-deep-dives/message

ABOUT REBECCA DARLING, R WE THERE YET MOM? Rebecca Darling is a freelance travel writer who lives near Austin, Texas. She is a mom of three (15, 13, and 6) who loves to create exceptional memories with her family. Whether that be on the other side of the world or right down the street, her goal is to help families create exceptional memories too. You can find her writing at R We There Yet Mom?, or follow her on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. VISITING AUSTIN WITH KIDS Austin is known for South by Southwest Interactive in the Spring and Austin City Limits in the fall, but there is so much to offer families from a vibrant Hill Country with hiking and waterskiing, to a ton of history and family attractions. A long weekend is sufficient for exploring the city but ideally families should plan on four to five days. Sometimes families may combine a trip to Austin with a visit to San Antonio. Texas State Capitol is 131 years old and made of pink granite to create a beautiful building with a whispering gallery, a Texas history museum for kids and memorials. Across the street you will find Bullock Texas State History Museum. Another must do is to to experience the outdoors at Zilker Park in downtown Austin where you can fly kites and swim in the Barton Springs Pool. Barton Springs Pool is manmade but fed by a natural spring so it is 68 degrees year-round. The springs feed into Town Lake and you can rent kayaks, paddle boards and water bikes. After your water activities, you can ride the Zilker Zephyr, a miniature train with excellent views. At night, you must see the Congress Avenue bats, which live under the Congress Avenue Bridge from March through October. Every evening at dusk, the bats fly out from under the bridge en masse. However, don't go to the legendary Sixth Street -- it is for college kids and above. But there are plenty of fun and eclectic shops on South Congress. Some off-the-beaten path places to visit in Austin: Tom's Coffee Shop with a set up a Tom's shoes and a back yard garden Austin Murals Cathedral of Junk WHERE TO STAY IN AUSTIN Rebecca recommends staying in downtown Austin at the Driskill Hotel on the edge of Fifth and Sixth Street with unique, beautiful rooms. She also likes the Four Seasons by Town Lake and the J.W. Marriott, which are both in great locations to walk to the main sites. WHERE TO EAT IN AUSTIN Rebecca recommends: Franklin BBQ -- great BBQ but really long waits and there are many other options Salt Lick BBQ in Dripping Springs Matt's El Rancho -- Tex-Mex that really caters to the kids with face painting, balloon animals... Home Slice Pizza on South Congress -- NY-style pizza with dough balls for the kids Hopdoddy -- unique burgers BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO Greetings from Austin Mural -- on South First and Annie I Love You So Much Mural -- on South Congress on the side of Joe's Coffee house Zilker Park field with downtown Austin and the Congress Avenue bridge in the background Hike up Mount Bonnell and on the northwest side you overlook Lake Austin and the downtown is behind you FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Rebecca loves LuLaRoe leggings (just like Kim!) and Tom's shoes because they are comfortable and easy to slip on and off. TIP/APP OF THE WEEK Google Maps is a great app to use when walking around the city to find a walking path to your destination and get voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions. Plus, if you turn it on while you are in WiFi it even works when you have data turned off or if you are out of cell coverage. Our camping trip had to come to a close. We started out in Mudro Lake and had a great time on Lower Basswood River and Crooked Lake. This episode has us portaging out of the bottom of Friday Bay in Crooked Lake and going through a number of lakes including Boot, Fairy, 4 Town, and back into Mudro to finish the trip. Along the way we had a number of portages, one as long as 300 rods. It was a doozie leaving us with tired shoulders and a few mosquito bites. We had hoped to camp right after that portage, but all of the camp sites on Gun Lake were full. So we ended up camping on Fairy lake. That evening we caught a beaver on the shore chowing down on some tree branches and a turtle at the edge of the water. We continued the next day through 4 Town Lake where we saw an immature eagle eating some fish. Our trip finally came to an end back in Mudro. It was a great trip and we hope you enjoyed experiencing it with us through the video.

(Breather) Yes this title sounds familiar to the 2019 show titled, The Fatty Popcorn Boy Saga ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2019/07/05/fpb/ ). I’m alternatively embarrassed but also pleased to report that I have succeeded with a focused effort of fat reduction, and have some insights about mindset and practical tips to share with you. The Part 1 show wrestles with the philosophical aspects of taking on this challenge, while Part 2 covers five helpful tips to make it happen in real life. It’s very easy to slip a bit from your A-game with unbridled celebrations that become too commonplace, as well as mindless eating habits that aren’t aligned with your stated goals. It’s much more difficult to recalibrate and get rid of body fat that was unwanted in the first place. I gained a fresh perspective about the content I communicate in books, podcasts, and videos from fighting a personal battle instead of just being theoretical. The best starting point for a fat reduction effort is to get your mindset right ― do you really want this goal, or are you deep down okay being just okay? Perhaps you are giving yourself permission to celebrate life and use food as a release valve against all the pressure and expectation we face in other areas of daily life? That’s perfectly okay, but you have to have some honest self-assessment so you don’t set yourself up for disappointment. As you embark on the difficult task of dropping excess body fat, it’s important to strike a balance between harnessing the focus, discipline and competitive intensity to kick butt with not attaching your self-esteem or self-image to the outcome. Insights from shows with Mark Manson ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2020/06/23/mark-manson-the-subtle-art-of-connecting-with-your-emotional-brain-seeing-yourself-with-honesty-and-vulnerability-and-connecting-the-emotional-brain-with-the-rational-brain/ ) and Andrew MacNaughton ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2018/10/05/andrewmacnaughton/ ) apply here. You also have to recognize the strong influence of environmental factors, as revealed by Framingham Study data that identified social “clusters” for things like obesity, or happiness, that are contagious to three degrees. If one is obese, one’s friend and the friend’s friend are more likely to obese. If you are kickin’ it in Austin with thousands of people visible every morning cruising around the Town Lake trail, the fitness ethos of a community is most definitely contagious. You also need to be able to accept honest feedback from others, while remembering that it’s also a balancing act: you don’t want to let self-limiting beliefs and negative childhood associations run (and ruin) your life, but you still need to let enough constructive criticism in that you can make the necessary changes you need to make. Do your best to align yourself with a beneficial sense of self, or at the very least, a more positive one than you’ve had in the past. This is key when it comes to weight loss because your thoughts really do affect your cellular function, at all times. If this is a new concept to you, check out the book, The Biology of Belief ( https://www.amazon.com/Biology-Belief-10th-Anniversary-ebook/dp/B011AE5OY6/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1UTJSA7OKN9VW&dchild=1&keywords=the+biology+of+belief&qid=1594349820&sprefix=the+biolog+yof+%2Caps%2C249&sr=8-1 ) , and the episodes ( part 1 ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2019/06/21/bob1/#:~:text=The%20Biology%20of%20Belief%20makes,cells%20by%20altering%20your%20thoughts.&text=As%20Dr. ) and part 2 ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2019/06/28/bob2/ ) ) where I discuss this concept and the power your thoughts (positive and negative) truly have on your body. Getting routine blood work done can potentially aid you immensely throughout your weight loss journey, because truthfully, even if you think you are doing well and are feeling quite healthy, a blood test might change everything. It could expose you to things you had no idea were happening in your body. Here are the top things to look out for when you get bloodwork done: * * *Triglyceride levels* : High triglycerides are not a good sign as they indicate the amount of fat circulating in your blood. Dr. Sinha ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2019/08/09/sinha2/ ) says get this number under 100. * *HDL* (aka good cholesterol): Aim for at least over 40. * *Triglyceride to HDL ratio:* Dr. Cate Shanahan ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2019/11/26/cate-shanahan-cancer-proof/ ) and Dr. Sinha both suggest striving for a 1:1 ratio * *Vitamin D: Most people are chronically deficient in Vitamin D due to our modern, indoor lifestyles, but it is more important than ever in these times ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2020/06/02/dr-ron-sinha-how-to-beat-the-covesity-pandemic/ ) that you boost your immunity by exposing large skin surface areas to sunlight. Sure you can take a supplement, but nothing will be as potent or efficient as the real thing.* * *Inflammatory markers* * *HBA1C* If any of these show up irregular in your blood work, take their presence as a sign (and a powerful motivator) that it’s time to lose some weight. Learn from the Fatty Popcorn Boy’s journey and stay focused and positive. Try not to let yourself get too discouraged, don’t be too hard on yourself, and stay tuned for part 2! *TIMESTAMPS:* Brad understands the weight gain problem. He was not living in a manner that is aligned with his goals as an athlete. [05:44] A tiny bit of unbridled celebration and mindless habits can really quickly send you off your A-game. [07:43] Dropping excess body fat is the number one diet, fitness, and health goal that we share in modern life. [09:42] What are you sacrificing when you give up the pizza and ice cream? [10:50] Don’t attach your self-esteem or your identity to the outcome. [15:38] Your social group, your community have a huge impact on how you live your life. [18:48] Sometimes we need direct unfiltered feedback. [22:17] We form these self-limiting beliefs and negative associations early in childhood that get programmed into our subconscious and we play them out for the rest of our lives. [25:02] It’s important to have your routine blood work done. [26:42] We have a widespread deficiency of Vitamin D. [31:08] Visceral fat that concentrates around the abdominal area is extremely unhealthy.
