“I look out the window towards K2 and it's this splitter blue day with this little wisp of white snow coming off the top of the second highest mountain in the world and I'm feeling this sense of terror and this realization of, oh shit: What have I agreed to?” Cory Richards is one of the world's most renowned mountaineers and adventure photographers. He has climbed Everest without oxygen, been on the front cover of National Geographic and is the first American to climb an 8000m peak in winter. In this episode, he shares his favorite adventures from the Andes to the Himalayas. But he also shares what he calls his “journey to quiet the chaos within”. Cory was diagnosed with bipolar disorder as a child. He was put in psychiatric hospitals, suffered extreme depression, and even - in his darkest moments - thought about ending it all. Climbing mountains for Cory became a way to escape the “madness that was haunting him”. But it was a race he was doomed to lose.  This story is both an edge of your seat adventure, told by one of the world's greats, but also an extremely honest and vulnerable account of what it means to fall apart and rewrite your story anew.  CONNECT WITH CORY Cory's latest book is called The Color of Everything: A Journey to Quiet the Chaos Within. Charisma, fame, good looks, superhuman physical and artistic achievement. Some people seem to have done everything and to be everything you dream of becoming. And as Cory Richards shares in this interview, everything can be nothing and anything can be the opportunity for presence, mindfulness and connection to who and what matters most.    Cory climbed Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen in 2016 and was the first and only American to climb one of the world's 8,000 meter peaks in winter, where he almost died in an avalanche and took one of the most famous photos of his career that became the cover of the 125th anniversary issue of National Geographic. Cory has been a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and National Geographic Photographer fellow.    His memoir, The Color of Everything, out July 9th, tells the story of his journey with mental health and how it has shaped his life, his path as an adventurer and artist and his decision to walk away from climbing, photography and shed his former identities to move to LA and be a writer.    Once I started reading The Color of Everything, I couldn't put it down and since I finished it, I can't stop thinking about it. It's a profound, must-read book and I'm sure you'll see it on many best of the year lists come December. Welcome to the last Startup Dad episode of 2023! It has been one hell of a year. Starting in June I released a show a week for the entire rest of the year; 27 episodes in total. Danielle Patterson exemplifies resourcefulness. She parlayed undiagnosed dyslexia and her father's job loss into a lifelong commitment to networking and learning. Balancing her love for family, art, and business, she is at the forefront of the family office industry. Hear her story. MORE ABOUT DANIELLE PATTERSON From an early age, I often heard people say, "Danielle, you have a real talent for saving money." Little did many know, my journey held untold stories. By the time I hit 28, my husband and I found ourselves facing the daunting prospect of bankruptcy. Let's rewind to my childhood – picture a young me orchestrating yard sales, convincing neighbors to buy odds and ends. Growing up in a bustling household with hardworking parents and three siblings, we were instilled with an unwavering creed: to understand the worth of a dollar and carve your own path. As a resourceful Californian, I set my sights on the University of California, Santa Cruz, maneuvering to avoid the hefty expenses of out-of-state tuition. Ingenious financial moves by my dad enabled me to participate in work-study programs, ensuring student debt wouldn't shackle my dreams. After graduation, I found myself managing the gallery of world-renowned National Geographic Photographer, Frans Lanting. Marrying the man of my dreams, and acquiring a home by the West-Cliff shores, everything seemed to fall into place. However, the seismic tremors of the 2008 financial crisis shattered our plans. In a bid to preserve our beloved home, we adopted resourcefulness, selling belongings, renting out our house, and setting forth fresh horizons on the East Coast. Grateful for the haven provided by my husband's parents, we toiled relentlessly to rebuild our lives. Steering clear of the art world, I found stability in a job that blossomed into a 7-year career, culminating in my role as Business Development Manager. Throughout my tenure, I elevated revenue by an astounding 300%. Despite financial success, a yearning to build something personal persisted. Fortune favored me as I partnered with an enterprising Fund Manager who had pioneered several financial service companies, streamlining capital raising. From this collaboration emerged "Family Office List," to which I took the reins, transforming it from a rudimentary Excel product into a dynamic platform, revolutionizing the Family Office intelligence. As a founder, funder, mother, wife, and the Chief of Everything, I reflect on my journey spanning diverse fields – from fine art to sales, marketing, business development, and finance – weaving the vibrant fabric of my life connected by threads of resilience, a penchant for meaningful connections, unconventional thinking, and an unwavering growth mindset. Each step carved the path to where I stand today, and for every opportunity, gratitude abounds. https://www.linkedin.com/in/danielle-patterson-/

This week's guest is Ami Vitale, an award-winning National Geographic Photographer and Nikon Ambassador. Ami has visited over 100 countries, documenting the horrors of war and the good work being done to protect endangered species. In this conversation, Ami attributes her curiosity as a child to getting her out in the world as a photographer. She tells Justin about her early experience in journalism where she had to navigate a male dominated industry that couldn't see her in the field. Overcoming that, she learned the importance of spending time in the communities she photographed, not just parachuting in and out. Ami talks about her work with the Nature Conservancy and her new nonprofit, Vital Impacts. How did your childhood define you, peers? For today's guest it was a battle with meningitis as a one-year-old that impacted the way he moved through the world. Although his sight and hearing was impacted, the Founder of Litmus Collective and National Geographic Photographer, Matthew Cicanese didn't let it slow him down. In this episode of Peers2Peers, powered by Shopify, Matthew shares how he persisted in the face of rejection, why having so many interests is a double edged sword and how he lived with his disability from a young age.Discover more:Start your Shopify 14-day free trial: https://bit.ly/3fuq58C -Check out Matthew's website: https://matthewcicanese.com/ -Learn more about Litmus Collective: https://resources.litmuscollective.com/home -Connect with Matthew on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewcicanese/ -Follow The Peers Project on Instagram: http://bit.ly/3adVmYG - See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I sat down with Robb Kendrick for a live Eazy Does It Podcast here at Eazy's. Robb was a photographer for National Geographic for 32 years. His camera took him around the world, and introduced him to people & places he never thought he'd experience as a kid from small town Texas with aspirations of being a truck driver. • The majority of this podcast focuses on a project Robb did back in 2004 where he photographed cowboy's across the western United States. Robb photographed these individuals utilizing a process known as Tintype. A tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype, is a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photograph (photograph) made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. • It is a very intensive process that came with it the respect of the ranch workers, because they recognize hard work. It's beautiful to see how their character is expressed through these photographs. There is a sense of timelessness in this style of photography. You will hear simple stories, and uncomplicated perspectives from men and women that still live peacefully not too far from where we are now. These stories remind me to not over complicate things, or get caught up in the rat race we call life. • Our conversation extended beyond this project, and we heard stories from illegal coal mines to photographing Guantanamo Bay. I hope y'all enjoy Robb's insight and the conversation we dove into. • Bringing the conversation of community & culture to Austin, TX. • Please give us a RATING & REVIEW if you enjoyed the episode & be sure to SUBSCRIBE! • Instagram: @eazy.does.it Studio: @eazys.studio Email: evan.h.duvall@gmail.com Website: eazydoesit.org Learn more about your ad choices. As we start the year, I am bringing back my very favorite video interview & podcast with award-winning National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen. In this incredibly informative tete a tete with Nicklen, skyping from his home in British Columbia, he tells us the one thing we can easily do today to positively affect the planet and its animals and sea life. There is no time to lose and the new administration could make things much worse for our environment. Listen in to the podcast and check out the video of Paul's incredible photography of polar bears, walrus, penguins, sea lions and pups, narwhal and more here: http://thedinnerparty.tv/national-geographic-photographer-paul-nicklen/
