"Everything is in a cycle, and the cycle is dictated by the audience's needs and wants, the studio's needs and wants in terms of the financial bottom line, right? Those two very evolving organisms are always trying to sync into the right gear. So, I don't worry anymore because it always comes back around. You're in this long enough, you just go, all right, this is a cycle, it'll come back around."  Stephanie Allain Stephanie Allain of Homegrown Pictures, is a prolific film and television producer dedicated to creating content by and about women and people of color with authentic stories, depictions, and representation. She began her career in the mid-80s as a reader at the elite talent agency, CAA, a job that required reading scripts and books submitted to the agency and providing coverage of the material, often the first barrier for further consideration and development.  In her next position at Columbia Pictures, as one of only two African-American readers,  a young USC student found his way to her under the guise of interest in a job. Instead that student, John Singleton, pitched her Boyz in the Hood and the rest, as they say, is history. Stephanie worked with John Singleton on five movies: Boyz N the Hood (1991), Poetic Justice (1993), Higher Learning (1995), Hustle & Flow (2005) and Black Snake Moan (2006). She also produced Something New, Peeples, Beyond The Lights, Dear White People, French Dirty, Burning Sands, Juanita and Really Love. Her work has been nominated for numerous awards with wins from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Film Independent Spirit Awards, NAACP and others. A few of her projects currently in production include her first documentary Untitled Billy Preston, and a limited series for HBO, Sula by Toni Morrison. Amid a brilliant career, Stephanie became the first black woman to co-produce the Academy Awards (2020) and made history again by becoming the first woman of color to be named as President of the Producer's Guild of America (2022). Joining the show today is Clint, a seasoned professional from different sectors in the world of first response, having worked in the fire department as well as an EMS. The idea here is to open up the dialogue about common issues that many of us face. Clint talks about how this evolution happened, his hopes to still make a film once he raises enough money, and we also get to discuss the environments that many of us came up in and how these are progressing. So, to hear it all from Clint and the important and exciting strides he's making for our community, be sure to listen in! Tweetables: “So often I think it's easy for us to neglect our own mental health, and to forget that we need to stop and check-in on ourselves and take care of ourselves sometimes.” — John Kelley [0:01:31] “I wanted to open up a dialogue between us, get us talking to each other. I guess being more accepting of each other's problems.” — Clint [0:10:02] “My way of dealing with things has always been writing, so I wrote a script and it had a lot to do with mental health and EMS, and so I really wanted to make this movie.” — Clint [0:10:44] “What I would like to do is hit a new department every week, talk to somebody new about their struggles with their mental health. I sat down with country music singer Sam Riggs to talk about his career, and the path he has pursued over the years. Sam is so much more than just an artist, but is the full embodiment of someone living out their truth. We talked about his rise in the music industry, how he dealt with addiction while finding his way, and then spectacularly one defining moment that would change his life. • I'll let you listen to the full episode, and not disclose this moment of clarity. My biggest takeaway from this episode as we discussed is to never stop committing to yourself fully. As Sam would say, “It doesn't matter what others think”, keep staying true to who you are no matter how bad it gets. • I have found rock bottom multiple times in my life, and I'm not afraid of expressing those versions of myself. I think it is essential that we recognize that the good and the bad we carry inside is what makes us whole. If you are hiding, or not confronting certain aspects of yourself you will never discover your full potential. • Sam is all about adventure. He runs an adventure company called Air & Opportunity Adventure Co. where you can join him for adventures all over North America. At the end of the month he has decided to step away from the lights momentarily, moving to Alaska, the last frontier. Sam will be spending time with his wife and son, and getting the opportunity to take a job flying seaplanes. I am inspired by your story Sam, and I am sure that hearing this raw & authentic look at how your life has transgressed will touch the hearts of many. Writer and director Channing Godfrey Peoples joins Anna for an eye-opening discussion about her new film, Miss Juneteenth. In UK cinemas from 25th September 2020, this movie is a warm and intimate portrait of former pageant winner Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie), as she prepares her daughter, Kai (Alexis Chikaeze), for the annual Miss Juneteenth pageant and navigates her life within the close-knit Black community of Fort Worth, Texas. Channing reveals the personal inspiration behind her story, explains the role that the arts can play in the Black Lives Matter movement, and hints at what she is working on next. Next, Anna welcomes fellow critic Corrina Antrobus back to the show to review the film. They talk about Nicole’s remarkable performance, the nuanced relationships presented onscreen, and the significance of a 'dream deferred'. This jam-packed show also includes fantastic film recommendations. Channing provides a detailed watchlist: Killer Of Sheep and My Brother’s Wedding by Charles Burnett, Daughters of the Dust (dir. Julie Dash), Eve’s Bayou (dir. Kasi Lemmons), Beyond The Lights (dir. Gina Prince-Bythewood), and Rachel Getting Married (dir. Jonathan Demme). And Corrina suggests Rocks (dir. Sarah Gavron), Babyteeth (dir. Shannon Murphy), Make Up (dir. Claire Oakley), and In My Room (dir. Mati Diop). Filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood brings a delicate but assured touch to everything she’s involved in, whether on the big screen with films like “Love & Basketball” and “Beyond the Lights,” or in the world of television with projects like the riveting limited series “Shots Fired.” Her latest film, Netflix’s “The Old Guard,” is no exception as the award-winning filmmaker fuses the superhero genre with an uncharacteristic tenderness in an adaptation of the Greg Rucka comic books series. In this week’s season premiere of “The Call Sheet,” Prince-Bythewood will take you through the new film’s production from beginning to end. She’ll discuss visual choices and editorial and music decisions, and she’ll contextualize the project within the overall framework of her career -- or, as you’ll soon hear her describe it, her fairytale. The world of pop music is often explored in film through a satirical lens. Gina Prince-Bythewood's Beyond the Lights is one of those rare films that takes an honest look at the complexities of the industry. Centered around a romance between a pop star and a police officer, the film boldly examines topics such as race, depression, and the objectification of women in the media. We also take a moment to discuss our short film picks of the week: Elizabeth St. Philip's The Colour of Beauty and the Michael K. Williams starring Am I Typecast? NPR's Bilal Qureshi and the writer Joshunda Sanders join G.D. to chop it up about "Selma," the much-discussed historical drama by the director Ava Duvernay. (Alas, we recorded this a week before the Academy Award nominations were announced, so we don't get into the film's perceived Oscar snubbing here.) Also, Bilal stumps hard for "Beyond The Lights," a movie that like "Selma," boasted a black woman at the helm. "Lights" tanked at the box office despite strong reviews, and Bilal said that it's in part because no one knew how to market it. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
