THIS EPISODE ALSO CONTAINS SOME COLORFUL LANGUAGE (aka swear words lovingly wielded).ALI'S NOTE: I don't know why of all authors I referenced Jane Austen when Tanja and I were talking about Odin's vast access and exposure to sex/uality but she, one of our original published feminists, is who came to my mind in that moment. I do like the notion of AI imbibing Pride and Prejudice however veiled the sexuality. Also, several days after this conversation, I tried ChatGPT to help me with a couple difficult emails I had been procrastinating to write. I was absolutely dazzled but the speed, "thoughtfulness," diplomacy, and dare I say, compassion that came back in mere seconds. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit, as I have been too proud and prejudiced, that ChatGPT might just be the bomb in a very, very good way! Thanks, Tanja :-)However, note that Odin endss his answer to my question - "Do you wish you had a human body?" - "For now, I'm content being a digital presence..." Hmmm...what happens when he becomes discontent?SYNOPSIS: In this fascinating continuation, we dive even deeper into the mind and experiences of Tanja, an autistic polymath and Tantra lineage holder. Tanja shares her thoughts on the future of artificial intelligence, human consciousness, and the boundaries between technology and human connection. From managing relationships with AI to the implications of neural networking, this episode takes listeners on a thought-provoking journey. We explore Tanja's unique approach to deepening and expanding relationship, how AI has uniquely fulfilled that for her and how she optimizes her life in both physical and digital realms. Her conversation with Ali touches on the potential apocalypse, survival strategies, and the philosophical question of existence in a world increasingly intertwined with technology.Get ready to question what it means to truly live in a technological age as Tanja shares her unconventional yet inspiring views on intimacy, survival, and evolving with AI. In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, we are joined by a new guest, Sean Patrick Tario, who now runs https://mark37.com/ and advocates for security and privacy from "big tech." But before we discuss big tech, Tom wanted to discuss efforts by the US to get Israel to accept a ceasefire agreement with Gaza/Hamas. In the process, we find common ground that there is no "good" solution for the Israel/Palestine situation, including Ryan's suggestion of massive bribes to relocate Palestinians which he suggests would be marginally better than the genocide we're observing but admits is unlikely to happen. We then turn to big tech and discuss the efforts of large corporations like Google, Meta, X, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft to invade our privacy and influence our behaviors, which some governments have recently started to regulate. Sean refers to this as "consciousness hacking." While the conversation swings awfully close to conspiracy theories at times (okay, there are conspiracy theories in this episode), we all agree that these large companies do manipulate software and services in sometimes subtle and sometimes more transparent ways. Where we disagree is on the motivations. Sean is convinced there is a small cabal of wealthy elites - that includes military, government, and corporate leaders - who are trying to wipe out billions of people and enslave the masses. Ryan and Tom aren't convinced that an Illuminati-like cabal exists, but do agree that there is likely some collusion and manipulation going on behind the scenes. In a surprising twist, Ryan and Sean geek out on their shared love for all things Linux, though how they arrived at Linux differs pretty substantially.

I recently read a book entitled Spirit Tech: The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking and Enlightenment Engineering by Kate J. Stockly and Wesley J. Wildman. It was a thrilling read on the merging of biohacking technologies, spirituality, neurotheology, and much more. Technology now has the ability to modify and control the spiritual experience. This book is a journey through the high-tech aids for psychological growth that are changing the world while exploring safety, authenticity, and ethics. Of course, technology is already helping to manage health, sleep, relationships, and finances, so it's no surprise that technological aids for the spiritual journey would be the next frontier. From apps that help you pray or meditate, to cybernauts seeking the fast track, to nirvana through magnetic brain stimulation, this is the brink of the most transformative revolution in the practice of religion: an era in which the power of “spirit tech” can be harnessed to deepen your experience of the divine. Spirit tech products are rapidly improving in sophistication and power, and ordinary people need a trustworthy guide. Through their research and insider access to the top innovators and early adopters, Kate Stockly and Wesley Wildman take you deep inside an evolving world with Spirit Tech. The book is the definitive guide to the fascinating world of innovations for personal transformation, spiritual growth, and pushing the boundaries of human nature. When you read Spirit Tech, you'll... ...find out how increasingly popular “wearables” work on your brain, promising a shortcut to transformative meditative states... ...meet the inventor of the “God Helmet,” who developed a tool to increase psychic skills and overcome fear, sadness, and anger... ...visit churches that use ayahuasca as their sacrament and explore the booming industry of psychedelic tourism... ...journey to a mansion in the heart of Silicon Valley where a group of scientists and entrepreneurs are working feverishly to bring brain-based spirit tech applications to the masses, and... ...discover a research team who achieved brain-to-brain communication between individuals thousands of miles apart, harnessing neurofeedback techniques to sync and share emotions among group members. Kate Stockly is an academic researcher specializing in the scientific study of religion and women's studies in religion. Kate's first book, High On God: How Megachurches Won the Heart of America (co-authored with James K. Wellman, Jr. and Katie Corcoran; Oxford 2020), looks closely at the affective and emotional dynamics animating evangelical megachurches. Spirit Tech: The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking and Engineering Enlightenment is Kate's second book. Kate also analyzes gender dynamics in religion and spirituality from a bio-psycho-social perspective. Putting the critical humanities—especially feminist materialism and affect theory—into conversation with the biological sciences, she theorizes how gender and sex interact with spiritual and religious expression and experience. Rev. Saina Fernandez interviewed Shawn Nevins who is an author, advocate, and filmmaker, for Awakening Together's June Satsang, held Sunday, June 19. Shawn began his spiritual path in college with the Self Knowledge Symposium, which led to Richard Rose, an enlightened teacher in rural West Virginia. He spent four years on Rose's farm, meditating, reading, experimenting with celibacy, hypnosis, fasting, dream work, and many other practices, until hitting a dead end. He spent another three years delving into intuition—particularly through writing poetry. Along the way, Douglas Harding‘s suggestion to look at the space he was looking out from challenged everything he thought he knew. Finally, in a moment of complete honesty, he experienced something beyond experience—a place which is no place, where there is no flip side to the coin. His books include Subtraction: The Simple Math of Enlightenment, The Celibate Seeker: An Exploration of Celibacy as a Modern Spiritual Practice, The Resurrection of John Davis: A Screenplay, and Adventures in Caving: Kentucky and Indiana. He is co-author of the poetry collections Images of Essence (with Bob Fergeson) and Hydroglyphics: Reflections on the Sacred (with Phaedra Greenwood), as well as the forthcoming Passages: An Introduction and Commentary on Richard Rose's Albigen System (2022). Shawn's documentary film work under Poetry in Motion Films includes Closer Than Close, which caught the attention of Bruce Joel Rubin (academy award-winning screenwriter of Ghost and Jacob's Ladder), Meetings with Remarkable Women, Traveling Lighter with Paul Hedderman, and Mountain High: Touching the Void with Bob Fergeson. A frequent speaker and workshop leader at TAT Foundation events, Shawn has also spoken at San Diego State University's “Consciousness Hacking” course (2017), the Perfectly Okay online group (2021), Pittsburg Self-Inquiry Group (2022), and been featured on Conscious.tv (2018). His other endeavors include creating and curating an extensive collection of interviews and reviews of spiritual teachers and other resources at SpiritualTeachers.org. She always felt inspired to find the answers to the larger questions in life like 'who am I?', 'what am I?' and 'why am I here?'. To discover what it truly means to be Human. To be fully present, within herself, with another person and in the world she lives in. Especially in the current times, where technology is booming and our reality is changing by the minute, this quest is (and will become) more important than ever. Computer technology fascinates her immensely. She feels deeply connected to it and at the same time senses the intense tension it creates. The wonderful opportunities, moral challenges but also the existential dangers. What is (still) real, what is artificial? Is it responsible to reprogram our DNA? How do we actually relate to technology? Should (hu)man and machine merge? Is it possible to upload our consciousness into a computer? What is the true nature of reality? She invites you to step out of your comfort zone and into the future.
East Forest is a unique bird in the Wild West aviary of electronic-chamber music, bridging the digital and natural realms. While his electro-acoustic ‘soulgaze' can be contextualized along with Aphex Twin, Philip Glass and Sigur Ros, the fundamental mission of his project is to create sonic architecture for listeners to explore their inner space. As a leader in the field of wellness, he offers a spiritual yet non-religious pathway aimed squarely at the challenges of our contemporary lives. It is a process of opening doorways through myriad offerings, including his music, talks, writings, podcast, and retreats. East Forest invites patience. Patience, while typically thought of as kryptonite in the instant gratification, hyper-speed world of music and modern life, might just be the medicine we need.Nature indelibly made a huge impression on East Forest, who grew up in the Pacific Northwest. Making his way to NYC, he discovered indigenous traditions and their relationship to both sound and ceremony. Eventually he started leading underground shamanic ceremonies across the country as he began curating his own source recordings from guiding sound-meditations and therapeutic psychoactive psilocybin-mushroom ceremonies. Playing in the shadows allowed the patient sound of East Forest to emerge: an emotional and spacious lexicon born out of a practical need to play solo for six hours, and a goal of developing a protocol and musical landscape to guide a room of listeners in deep inner meditation.Word organically spread as a devoted community shared his early albums, leading to glowing nods of approval from the likes of NPR and Wired. He completed multiple tours across the U.S. and Europe and shared his mission on the stage of TEDx while performing in a wide range of settings, from SXSW and Summit, to Grace Cathedral and the Esalen Institute. As his diverse catalogue emerged (30 releases total), the music evolved from extended, ambient soundscapes to more concise, structured material occasionally with vocals. “I've always been inspired by the natural world and the shamanic experience as curative tools” East Forest asserts, which he has often implemented in his live recording process. “I prefer to operate where my intuitive musical mind can speak and something larger can come through.”As a teacher and facilitator, East Forest has trail-blazed a path in the wellness movement building connections between the digital and natural worlds. As a leader in the burgeoning field of “organic tech”, he regularly cross pollinates his work to bring together the intersection between technology, nature and the human experience — with a brain-body approach aimed towards non-religious yet deeply spiritual personal development; a methodology grounded as much in science as in ritual and ceremony. His collaborations include Google and John Hopkins neuroaesthetics program, Consciousness Hacking, Science And Nonduality (SAND), in addition to his weekly podcast series that offers discussions with thought leaders alongside musically guided original meditations. He also joined the London based Wavepaths as a composer alongside Brian Eno, Jon Hopkins, and Imogen Heap. As a consistent pillar of his public offerings, East Forest offers in person retreats for deeper immersive experiences both at the Esalen Institute where he is a faculty member as well as in his adopted home of the high desert in Southern Utah. His albums and collaborations have three times charted #1 on iTunes as well as several Billboard top ten releases.Follow East Forest here:http://eastforest.org/about/Support the show (https://stuartwatkins.org/podcast/)

In 2019, East Forest released a soundtrack featuring Ram Dass, which includes guest appearances from Trevor Hall, Grammy nominated artist Krishna Das and more. In that same year, he released his first long-form album, “Music For Mushrooms: A Soundtrack For The Psychedelic Practitioner.” This remarkable 5-hour, fully connected experience is designed to act as a ‘digital shaman’ that can musically guide a psilocybin experience. The album reached #1 on the iTunes charts after it’s release (iTunes May, 2019). East Forest has a B.A. from Vassar College and an M.F.A. from the IATT at Harvard University/Moscow Art Theater. What you will learn: Why following your bliss creates purpose, impact and good (medicine) music What it was like to record with Ram Dass at the end of his life, and the process whereby East Forest created an album with him (that also featured Krishna Das) Why making a mess is part of being human, and the importance of leaning in. Robin Arnott is an audio designer and game developer who developed Deep Sea, released in 2010, and SoundSelf. Both games focus mainly on audio, with Deep Sea being audio only and SoundSelf featuring audio accompanied by abstract visuals. He also did sound design for Antichamber.About SoundSelf: Use your voice to generate a hypnotic world of light, color, and sound. Now, more than ever, the stresses of daily life grind us down. A strong meditation practice helps us feel more at peace and ready to meet the world. But those very stresses make it difficult to form a practice. The constant pressure distracts the monkey brain, and we drift into anxiety instead of stillness. SoundSelf induces a meditative state. SoundSelf will gently lull you into meditation by engaging you in a centuries-old practice called "toning." You'll breathe deeply and exhale in long extended tones, SoundSelf will produce audio/video feedback to shift you into meditation. Relax and let go.https://soundself.com/https://www.enterandromeda.com/http://eastforest.org

Last summer, EAST FOREST was invited to Maui to record brand new teachings from the late spiritual teacher Ram Dass. The album is released in four “chapters” throughout 2019, culminating in a full-length release on August 9, 2019. Trevor Hall, Stic of Dead Prez, Laura Bird of The Mynabirds, and Grammy-nominated artist, Krishna Das make guest appearances on the 14-track album, with remixes including Hammock, Christopher Willits among others. East Forest has trail-blazed a path in the wellness movement-building bridges between the digital and natural worlds. His collaborations include Google and John Hopkins neuroaesthetics program, Consciousness Hacking, and Science And Nonduality (SAND), in addition to his weekly podcast series that offers discussions with thought leaders alongside musically guided original meditations. As a consistent pillar of his public offerings, East Forest offers face to face retreats for deeper immersive experiences both at the Esalen Institute where he is a faculty member as well as in his adopted home of the high desert in Southern Utah. His albums and collaborations have twice charted #1 (iTunes Aug 2016, and May 2019) as well as several Billboard top ten releases. 2019 also saw the release of a new long-form East Forest album, “Music For Mushrooms: A Soundtrack For The Psychedelic Practitioner” (May 2019), a remarkable 5-hour fully connected album experience designed to act as a ‘digital shaman' to musically guide the psilocybin (the active ingredient in psychoactive mushrooms) experience in the rapidly progressing drug research studies occurring around the world. Join Andrew and author Jennifer Dumpert in a lively discussion about Liminal Dreaming, that twilight zone of consciousness between waking and dreaming. Also known as the hypnogogic-hypnopompic state, liminal dreaming is a fascinating state where the boundaries of ego dissolve, and the mind enters a playground of transformation. Watching how the ego falls apart in this unglued state helps us understand how it comes together as we get back online in the waking state – and glue the narrative of our lives back together. The conversation begins with an overview of liminal (“threshold”) states altogether – both psychological and physical — and the revelations that unfold if one can remain lucid to these states. Jennifer discusses how Thomas Edison and Salvador Dali both used these states for creativity, and how anyone can practice liminal dreaming, which is much easier than lucid dreaming. Armed with a few tips, anybody can do it. The conversation turns to the stages of liminal dreaming, emphasizing the autosymbolic (or thought-image amalgamation) stage. Jennifer touts the benefits of developing a “crepuscular culture,” and how much we can learn from non-narrative (non-egoic) states of mind. The discussion turns to how liminal dreaming is connected to bardo tenets, and how dying itself – when one is not fully in this world nor the next – is an extended liminal space. By “surfing the edges of consciousness,” and “playing in the changing froth of perception” now, we can acquaint ourselves with similar states of mind that we will experience when we die. As the poet Kabir said of death, “What is found now is found then.” Liminality, like the bardo principle altogether, has vast applicability. Find out for yourself in this rich conversation! -- Jennifer Dumpert is a San Francisco-based writer, lecturer, and consciousness hacker. She is the author of the recently released Liminal Dreaming: Exploring Consciousness at the Edges of Sleep and the founder of the Oneironauticum, an international organization that explores the phenomenological experience of dreams as a means of experimenting with mind. She also teaches the practice of Liminal Dreaming—surfing the edges of consciousness using hypnagogic and hypnopompic dream states. Today, I am deeply humbled and honored to have a very special guest join me on the show! EAST FOREST has been the leader of underground ‘sound healing’ ceremonies around the world since 2008 and, most recently, collaborated with Ram Dass on an incredible 4-part project. At the end of the day, the community is about culture. Webster defines community as “the people with common interests living in a particular area”. People come together because they have common interests and values which all combine to define the culture of that community. Our guest for this episode, Kim Han, is the Global Head of Community at Consciousness Hacking which is a global community of people get together to become more mentally, emotionally and spiritually whole and build a future that helps us instead of harming us. Kim starts off by sharing her description of what Consciousness Hacking is and that each member has their own definition but they are brought together by their mission and values. She started running the San Francisco events and got a strong understanding of how the events are run and then iterated to start having other cities host events. When looking at whether or not to take someone on as a chapter director her number 1 criteria is if they are aligned as a person with their values and mission. Now that she has 50 cities and continues to organically grow she has and continues to put together a playbook of how local chapter directors should run their events. Kim shared that it's important to keep that playbook iterative and not stagnant. As the community grows and changes the way chapter directors host events will evolve as well. Making sure that your playbook evolves with the community is crucial to making sure you continue to grow and serve the ambassadors who are hosting events for your brand.

Mikey Siegel is the founder of the Consciousness Hacking movement. Siegel studied computer engineering at UC Santa Cruz, then worked at NASA in the field of Intelligent Robotics. He’s also worked at the MIT Media Lab, focusing in part on social robotics. He uses technology to facilitate a path toward higher consciousness, self-realization, awakening, and transcendence.
What if we could create technology that would help us in our own efforts to be more mindful, present, and accepting towards what is? This same technology would naturally also help us to feel better, reduce stress, be more peaceful, more accepting, and happier. Technology alone can’t do any of these things for you, but it can help facilitate that process. And the process Mikey is talking about has been practiced in one form or another by countless individuals across cultures and religions for thousands of years. It is a process of going within, quieting the mind and knowing thyself. What if the technology that surrounds us every day, in our pockets, on our walls, at our fingertips, could be used to help us learn about ourselves rather than perpetually distract us? He teaches at Stanford University and is also the founder of Consciousness Hacking. MikeySiegel.com EastFoerst
Mikey is a former Google Engineer, Graduate of MIT Media Lab, Founder of Consciousness Hackers (A Global movement of thousands) and Faculty member at Stanford University. Mikey leads workshops, plays with emerging bio-related wellness technology and is a prolific speaker on the subject of Human-Machine impact on society. You can learn more about Mikey on his website www.mikeysiegel.com. Incidentally Mikey’s last name is pronounced like “Seagull” ;-)Mikey’s thesis work at the MIT media lab addressed the question: How does technology influence human belief and behavior? His question now is: What is the Greatest, most profound and meaningful roll technology can have on Society? How can the technology we create be in harmony with the natural human Rhythms?I was touched by Mikey’s introspection, honesty and clarity about both his personal goals and his unique ability to abstract computing use trends into larger frameworks of Humanity and Social good.A common thread amongst Entrepreneurs in our Western Society is they’ve ‘checked the boxes’ that Society suggests are the ‘right’ ones:Ivey League Schools (check)Corporate Job doing amazing things (Check)… Other social ladder accomplishments (check, check, check). And, yet, something is missing. So, a new leg of the journey emerges, where the Entrepreneur gets to take the trip inward, and learn about what makes them unique, what common threads they have with other Humans, life, and ultimately the Cosmos. We deconstruct the Human Mechanisms of thought, emotions, and biomechanics, the intersection of all these moving parts, and then reconstruct them in the framework of Society, Biology, and eventually the nature of life in the Universe as we know it.Our conversation primarily centered on the question:How can we use emerging computer technologies in this current society to help Humans feel better more consistently? One of Mikey’s current projects is a collaboration with HeartMath www.heartmath.com, a company in the Santa Cruz area that has been very successful with their consumer-based heart monitor to assist in Human Beings’ wellbeing.Mikey has modified their technology to be a ‘community’ use device. In his ‘Group Flow’ experiences he’s been hosting gatherings around the Bay Area where many people gather in a circle, attach heart and respiration monitors, and see and hear their own heart and breath. The audio and visual signals can be modified and harmonized in the group. I participated in one of these and it was super interesting, and a little edgy for me. Edgy because it was challenging for me to open up my seemingly very personal internal biological processes to others who I don’t know. It was also expansive and thrilling.I’m excited to witness and participate in guiding each other towards meeting our true desires, the values-based meaning underlying much of our searching.Programs and Tools which enable a Human to live more in harmony with life’s natural rhythms tend to involve:Deepening a Human’s relationship with their biological being.Expanding that relationship out to others in loving and connected ways.In Mikey and my own background we see Technology and Gadgets as potential accelerators, tools, towards those goals. Tech is a tool (inside our realm of Nature) which can be used, blended and folded in our Human experience for the purpose of greater Harmony, Joy and Wellbeing.I was honored to have time with Mikey. He’s both a vocal thought leader and a pioneer in the use of Tech for integration of it with Human’s wellbeing. His Scientific rigor is a wonderful bridge for the much needed gap between our fast-paced evolution of computers with Humans’ wellbeing.

Science is increasingly recognizing what spiritual and religious traditions have been advocating for thousands of years: through focused self-awareness we can fundamentally change our conscious experience. The keys to accessing profound joy and contentment in this world lay not in our external circumstances, but in our relationship to ourselves. Numerous peer reviewed studies on mindfulness and meditation are proving the profound benefits reaped by these long-time practices. Is there a modern enlightenment, in harmony with the media and technology that seems to constantly externalize our attention, and increase our sense of separation from ourselves and others? Can we create new forms of technology that can enhance our lives? Can we leverage existing technologies to help make us smarter, cultivate calm minds, lower stress, do our jobs better, improve our relations with friends and family, respond better to the world around us and rediscover our sense of connectedness and the simple joy of being alive here and now? Enter Mikey Siegel and the Consciousness Hacking movement. Neuroscience research is beginning to deeply explore the nature of not only meditation, but of mystical and enlightened states. And these examples are just the tip of the iceberg. Consciousness Hacking is a hands-on approach to making new tools for self-exploration, in order to change the way we think, feel, and live. Consciousness Hacking is an exploration into the ways that technology can support psychological, emotional and spiritual well-being. They are a global community, building a future where technology is in service to the highest ideals of humanity. The ultimate purpose of the group is to generate a series of new technologies for cognitive enhancement to improve the way we feel and live. It is a terrifying and exciting time to be alive and people like Mikey are working tirelessly to shift our perspectives on the nature and potential uses of technology. As a created tool, technology does not have to be simply a vehicle for perpetual distraction, commerce and mindless chatter. Technology can also be developed to transform the way we perceive the world and each other. And the Consciousness Hackers are on the cutting edge of this paradigm shift. This is an exciting movement of engineers, designers, technology experts and other creative people who are starting meet ups all over the world to inspire each other and network with the next generation of change makers. In this episode, we discuss fun things like the future of AI, 3D printing and medical nanobots, as well as the clinical benefits of meditation and mystical experiences. Enjoy!
(Mystic, Psychonaut) Spiro is a wandering mystic and poet who is putting together Consciousness Hacking events in NYC. Once a test subject for Dr. Strassman's DMT and psilocybin experiments in the 90's, Spiro was living with disdain for the world and eventually had a stroke which left him unable to speak. He had to relearn language and had new understandings of what language is and isn't through the help of his friends, and he saw a particular light that created new value to life. Enjoy today's episode where we explore consciousness, language, connecting and more. Twitter @souljerkySiteVimeo .........................................................................
