A recent study by Binghamton University in New York shows that meditation has significant changes on our ability to switch between states and to alter our ability to focus. Using a consistent meditation practice, study participants were able to quickly switch between what is referred to as the “default mode network” or lower Alpha or Theta brainwaves utilized in states such as meditation, hypnotherapy or relaxation and what is called the “dorsal attention network” or higher Alpha brainwaves utilized in highly focused activities required for us high-achieving entrepreneurs. That means, meditating regularly improves your ability to self-regulate your brain's activity and ability to either increase focus and precision of thought or calm your nervous system and slow your thoughts to gain peace of mind. The implications of this are huge for people that regularly need to have control over their mind - you know - EVERYBODY! If you develop and maintain a regular, consistent meditation practice, you will have greater control over the function of your mind and your ability to self-regulate your mental states. And, some of the best news about the study is that the participants were able to see these dramatic changes with as little as 10 minutes a day of regular meditation! You don't have to lock yourself away on your meditation cushion for hours a day to gain control of and optimize your brain function. You can achieve powerful results in a relatively short amount of time when you are consistent with your practice. So, what are you waiting for?! Breath is the key to creating and controlling life. Breath is absorbing the universal energy that flows and circulates everywhere at all times and using it to fuel your mind and body. Your physical body is also an energetic body that can be thought of as a rechargeable battery. And breath is one of the sources of energy to recharge your battery. Other sources are less beneficial in the long run. Things like caffeine or other stimulants can stimulate you in a negative, detrimental way. Stimulants aggravate the nervous system and increase heart rate as well as your rate of breathing. These give a temporary feeling of increased energy, but they are not REAL energy. They're a temporary agitation that feels like energy, but are in fact scattered, erratic waves of disturbance that ultimately lower your overall energy and can have long-lasting negative effects on your overall energy management. As driven individuals, we are often looking for ways to maximize our efforts and our potential for creating success. We look to optimize our health with hacks and external technology or supplements. However, we already have the ability to exponentially increase our energy, our productivity, our creativity and our ability to attract much more wealth without going outside of ourselves. That power comes from our breath. We are physical expressions of divine, universal energy and our bodies are rechargeable batteries that can be plugged into pure breath or plugged into the energy of chaos. That chaos appears to give us energy, but actually drains us and takes our energy rather than keeping us connected to ourselves and one another. But, the amazing thing about breath is that breath is pure energy and has a rhythm like music. Calm or chaotic. Smooth or erratic. Uplifting or enraging. Calming or depressing. You can learn to harness your breath and create your own, curated playlist that soothes you when you are filled with anxiety, lifts you up when you feel sluggish or uninspired or energizes you to take the stage and share your story with the world. Learning to use your breath properly is a super-power that gives you access to your limitless potential. Using breath as a tool, your brain's 100 billion neurons, that store information and communicate with each other (fire), begin making new synaptic connections (wire) in your neocortex (involved in higher-order brain functions such as sensory perception, cognition, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning and language). And when you begin flooding your brain with oxygen, using this powerful breathing technique, those billions of neurons become super-charged and capable of creating entirely new neural pathways and entirely new levels of thought, perception and ability. Your brain becomes charged with limitless energy and becomes more and more malleable. In this state, you can begin creating new realities and new identities that become hard-wired into the neural network of your brain. Let's discuss the power of your thoughts. All creation starts with your thoughts. Before something or someone manifests in your life, it begins first as a thought, an idea. And what you consider a “negative” thought has the power to derail your positive efforts. One of our greatest blocks to experiencing true happiness is our inability to forgive. Anger and resentment can be extremely toxic. Toxic to our health and relationships. In 2006, I watched how my husband's unresolved anger and resentment towards people who harmed him in his past became damaging to his mental health and led to his near suicide. In that state, he also said and did things to me that had the potential to make me angry and resentful toward him. It wasn't until he began his healing journey and found the power of forgiveness that his health and our relationship truly healed and flourished. I watched Scott become lighter and freer as anger and resentment left his mind and body. His view of the world became more optimistic and he became happier. Our relationship grew stronger and our love life benefited greatly! Today, he is a new man and a beautiful example of the power of forgiveness. He has forgiven himself and others and has made forgiveness a lifelong practice. When consumed with anger and resentment, our energy flow is constricted, we are heavy and dense, and that makes it harder for good things to flow to and through us. Once we let go of the past and learn to forgive, we become open to receive. Holding onto anger and resentment is the most toxic to US, not those we have yet to forgive. It keeps us from enjoying the present moment and robs us of our future. Through the power of forgiveness, we can take back the power in our lives and create an amazing new future. Who do you need to forgive? Yourself? A family member? A friend? A partner? To change our lives, we must literally change our minds and perception of the past. We must reprogram our minds for forgiveness, because our happiness and peace of mind depend on it. You are more powerful than your past. It's time to let go and experience the power of forgiveness.
