A Fresh Take on the Beautiful Game by Harry, George, Fergal, and Ali. We discuss the various ongoings of English and European football and beyond, with an in-depth analytical look, the occasional fantasy football twist, the odd new feature, and lots of laughs. Enjoy!
EURO 2024 is at the door and we're here for it! An Englishman [@geourgesouthern8], a hate-watching Irishman [@fergal_kerr] and a yank [@tacticality_] preview England's chances ahead of the tournament's Friday kick-off. Then we get into The Big Event: SHORT KING AWARDS and revealing YOUR winners
This is a chat about legacies. Jurgen Klopp leaves an eternal legend to Liverpool fans. But what about neutral and rival fans? What are Guardiola's Man City going to be really remembered for? How does the Arsenal fan base see their title charge? Plus, a catch-up on Ange and VAR, Fergal hospitalized, and Hungover Harry... JAFP on Spotify
Chelsea's 5-0 win against West Ham has signaled that they have returned to the form we were used to seeing from them in the past, and while Cole Palmer has rightly made the headlines, there's another player that explains why they're suddenly good again. Ali, Fergal, and George walk you through Chelsea's tactical tweaks and secret weapons that made things click lately, propelling the Blues to 7th and a real possibility of European football. As we recorded, news actually broke that West Ham are set to part ways with David Moyes and acquire former Real Madrid and Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui, and we incidentally reflect on David Moyes' perception and legacy at London Stadium. Ipswich are back in the Premier League thanks to back-to-back promotions, so we have a quick review of the promotion and (very funny) relegation stories from last weekend, and look ahead to the Playoffs. Plus: The "Title Race", top team strikers' form, and a typically surprising George take on who wins the Golden Boot. And: a Championship Edition Short King of the Week! 00:00 Intro and Chelsea's tactical tweaks 16:58 West Ham: Moyes' Legacy 27:58 Ipswich are Premier League! Why didn't either team really go for it? Were they just not on form? Why did they play with 4 central defenders? Why is Gvardiol playing at left-back? Was his performance good, bad, or indifferent? Why were Arsenal content with a draw? Does that open the door for Liverpool now? And did Xabi Alonso take the right decision? And how utterly brilliant is Alexis Mac Allister, AKA Fergal's cousin? (Real story) Ali is joined by Fergal and George to answer allllll of that. JAFP on Spotify
England losing to Brazil and Wirtz scoring for France inside 8 seconds in Lyon? People raging over a tiny cross on a piece of fabric? None of our business lol Ali and Harry are back to discuss the biggest strength and weakness of their respective teams, joint-table-toppers Liverpool and Arsenal (the latter being actually top on goal difference). JAFP on Spotify
Liverpool's children defeated the most expensive side of all time in Chelsea in one of the more impressive Jurgen Klopp successes with the club, and it's a perfect time to have Chelsea boys Fergal and George on the pod to reflect on a new failure, how it came about, and who's to blame. JAFP on Spotify
Klopp to become the only manager to win a league against Pep twice. Pep to become the only manager to win the Premier League 4 times consecutively. Arteta to become the youngest Premier League-winning manager in history. One of those three things will happen. Harry's back [tw/@haznicoll]! The Arsenal part of the pod is in for the first time in 2024 to talk through a HUGE month for the Gunners, and Ali and Fergal preview yet another JAFP Derby for Chelsea coming in the Carabao Cup Final this weekend against an injury-overloaded Liverpool. JAFP on Spotify
Chelsea were European Champions literally 2-and-a-half years ago. How on earth did the get here? 11th place and still sliding in the league, more losses than wins, more conceded than scored, unable to afford changing managers, and a mishmash of players too young, too old, or simply not good enough (yet) for the level. Fergal is FINALLY back, so we discuss Chelsea's downfall on today's show, as well as that Virgil Van Dijk performance against Arsenal (it's a HEATED DEBATE as the kids say) JAFP on Spotify

No Rodri, no Salah, and two players haven't even played this whole season. The goalkeeper on the XI isn't the one that won Best Goalkeeper yet again. Two players haven't even played since August. The penalty shout against Odegaard, the Tsimikas injury, and seemingly horror tackle towards the end from Saka on Gravenberch, were only a handful of a bizarre collection of slipping incidents in the biggest game of the season so far. Man United continue to hit new lows every week, and the content it's been providing the football world has been a blessing. Liverpool broke a record number of shots and could've played for the rest of the weekend without scoring. Man City drew, and Arsenal won and are in pole position ahead of the JAFPDerby on Saturday: Top-of-the-table clash against Liverpool. MLS had a miserable week, the Club World Cup has a new format, and these two topics tell plenty about the bleak future of the game. JAFP on Spotify
Welcome to the recap of the funniest Premier League Weekend this season! Liverpool were the winners of the weekend and have gone top, and the results signified why they are there. A full JAFP house discusses why each contender's chances, the Christmas schedule, and why Chelsea and Man United are having a miserable season so far. JAFP on Spotify
Draw at lowly Chelsea, draw at home against title challengers Liverpool, and draw against Spurs playing with a back line of fullbacks. Cracks. And Liverpool scoring 4 goal of the season contenders and finding the answers, again. Plus: Arsenal's win v Wolves was apparently their best performance, Serie A has heated up nicely, Bayern have been winning the Bundesliga since I was in middle school and they'll do it again, and a team in Georgia might be the worst top flight team of all time. JAFP on Spotify
Liverpool's 1-1 draw at City tells us a great deal about a potential title race, Chelsea's 4-1 defeat to Newcastle tells us a great deal about their progress under Pochettino, the MLS playoffs tell us a great deal about the state of American soccer, and Sergio Ramos had the funniest moment of the week! Ali and Fergal are back after 2 weeks with a bumper episode. JAFP on Spotify
#premierleague #chelsea #mancity #england #southgate Chelsea 4-4 Man City was the game of the season, but it tells us so much about the state of the league as a whole. Going into the Christmas run-in, the difference between first, Man City, and fifth, Aston Villa, is 3 points. Do the current top 5 build a five-way title race? Could the surprise "form PL team" mount a challenge to them? Has the gap between top and bottom ever been bigger? All of that plus Kane's cakewalk season, a surprisingly rare Short King of the Week awardee, and what else does James Ward-Prowse have to do to get in the England set-up? (Not to mention Raheem Sterling..) JAFP on Spotify
We didn't plan on talking about Ballon d'Or too much in this episode, but not to mention the fact that women's award nominees couldn't show up because of internationals, and there's no women's equivalent to the Yashin Trophy, there's a whole list of reasons why the award itself is confusing and shouldn't be taken too seriously. We also played a little "who finished higher" quiz! Also in this episode: 00:00 Intro - Fergal's mic is broken 1:39 Erik Ten Hag has scammed us all 15:14 George's Chelsea - Brentford thoughts
Arsenal's 2-2 draw away at Chelsea may have exposed midfield balance issues for the gunners, as well as a particular team selection tendency that has backfired for Arteta again. Chelsea losing a 2-goal lead wasn't idea either, considering their league position... Harry and Fergal reflect on their Desmond, Salah did something underrated, little Champions League preview follows, and a Short King achievement so big by a nominee so dominant it deserved more than a mere Short King of the Week award. JAFP on Spotify
Refereeing in the VAR era has hit rock bottom this weekend after a legitimate Luis Diaz goal was, now infamously, disallowed. This, though, is not an episode to rant and bemoan the issues as much as provide sensible solutions. We also dissect the quite unbelievable Aston Villa 6-1 thrashing of Brighton, discuss both Manchester clubs losing, and wonder if Everton will ever win another game at Goodison Park. Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday prompts the scary question of whether the Gunners are actually able to compete with Man City again. A certain Arsenal fan has a bad feeling about this. Our resident Arsenal season ticket holder was unhappy with certain aspects of their performance and the opportunities they allowed James Maddison and Son Heung-min and the changes to buildup patterns, and we delve into why there's been potentially too much change and their system. We have to talk about Chelsea yet again, as a home defeat to Villa has placed them at the pits of 14th place while they *STILL* play Chilwell at left-wing.. Plus, Thomas Frank's MNF howler, Sean Dyche's potential snacking preferences, Bellingham at striker, and the return of Champions League nights
Manchester United's schooling at the hands of Brighton essentially opened a 3-way crisis: On-the pitch form sees them in 13th on a -4 goal difference while conceding more than once in 3 consecutive Prem games for the first time since 1979, while Ten Hag continues to come up with the strangest statements in defense of his team. Jadon Sancho is out of team training and there is no indication he will ever play for Man United again. Anthony is also out, pending investigation. This is the lowest point for Man United PR-wise. And seeing as your hosts are Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal fans respectively, we'll gladly discuss United as our main topic! Then we get into some European football previews and go early with Short King of the Week
The Jordan Henderson topic, calling up Harry Maguire and Kalvin Phillips, and playing James Maddison out of position were only 3 of a collection of hot topics that a once media-friendly England men's national team found itself having to deal with. Ireland lost again, and with it any chance of qualifying for the Euros is gone, and questions about its manager's future are now real. The USMNT have Gregg Berhalter back, and US Soccer seem to know nothing about public image or relations. ✨ It's the most depressing episode of the year! ✨ JAFP on Spotify

Yesterday was.. mental. 30 minutes before the Summer 2023 Transfer Deadline, the boys sat down and reacted to updates, by the minute. They also discussed the (yet again) absolutely mental Nottingham Forest transfers, Chelsea's (non) strategy, and Saudi Arabia's transfer intentions. JAFP on Spotify
#premierleague #manunited #arsenal #macallister Aaaaand we have to talk about the refs again. A raft of tweaks were brought in, including stricter measures on time-wasting and player behavior, and what they believe is more accurately measured added time. We've seen 5 red cards this gameweek, and it all feels surreal right now, but the changes do make sense, and Ali, Fergal, and George explain why. We dive into how Tottenham sussed out an arrogant Man United, Liverpool's Wataru Endo and the #6 situation (shock), and Moises Caicedo's disastrous debut. JAFP on Spotify
We always ever talk about the biggest winners of the transfer window, but this summer is different. Liverpool are arguably the biggest losers of the window so far having publicly failed their pursuit of their two big targets with everyone now knowing there is comfortably more than £100 to spend now. How did it happen? And, importantly, what is the benefit for Chelsea from spending all of this? Fergal, George, and Harry debate the merits of Chelsea's transfers, how it affects the rest of the squad, and other headlines for the Premier League's first game week, namely Newcastle making them regret their pre-season predictions. They were awful. But no, yours weren't good either. After a season that felt like 5 and a half years, Fergal and Harry got together to reflect on the Premier League and Bundesliga's extraordinary final matchweek and go through our predicted tables which were done at a time that feels a world removed from today. Harry and Fergal join you from the JAFP Virtual Towers in this one to reflect on Arsenal's awful run-in that saw them lose the race by winning just 9 points from the last 24 available. Is City's title win good for the league? Is this team more impressive than any other in recent PL memory? And importantly, and for the last time: Who goes down? Another important development was the incident at the Mestalla where Vinicius Junior was racially abused yet again, and nobody is doing anything about it, yet again. There was also a massive twist in the Bundesliga, and a tasty, juicy Tabs on Tammy this week! JAFP on Spotify
Arsenal look to have ultimately come short in the title race, with Man City's next win crowning them champions. Leeds are still 18th with 2 games to play, and a draw against Newcastle helps, but Patrick Bamford being the starting striker doesn't. Our co-host Harry, fresh from the Emirates after watching Arsenal convincingly lose 3-0 against Brighton, and our Leeds-supporting friend of the pod and season ticket holder FJC are both here to discuss these eventful games, reflect on the season, and discuss what's in store for the rest of the season. Ali, Fergal, and George are also all here to chime in with their neutral-ish thoughts on Arsenal's form and Leeds' fortunes. Plus: a CL return leg overview, Barcelona crowned La Liga champions, Milan in trouble in the table, and Roma's stinky form. JAFP on Spotify
Harry, Fergal, and Geroge had to revisit the relegation battle after a that witnessed the most goals scored on a single day of Premier League football that had 3 matches or less. You did not see Brighton 1-5 Everton, Forest 4-3 Southampton, or Fulham 5-3 Leicester coming. You cannot predict what will happen for the rest of the season. We gave it a go, again. JAFP on Apple Podcasts
The relegation picture is starting to get a little clearer, but Ali and Fergal *still* have very different opinions on who's going down. This episode (recorded before Everton's 2-2 draw with Leicester) starts with a relegation battle debate using current records and remaining fixtures, then Harry joins for the obligatory Liverpool-Spurs review and the equally obligatory (but for very different reasons) Arsenal talk after their 4-1 domination at the hands of now-champions-elect Manchester City. The Serie A top 4 race has never been closer, and the Bundesliga might have been decided by the most egregious, outrageous refereeing decision in years. JAFP on Apple Podcasts
It's almost upon us. The Premier League Final. Harry is back on the hosting chair for the big preview as Ali is at the wheel (literally). George is here too, but thankfully, there's not much Chelsea talk today, apart from the impending Pochettino appointment. The guys preview what potentially is the ultimate Premier League decider between the top 2 teams with the battle unexpectedly City's to lose, after Arsenal came up with a royally damaging result letting Southampton score 3 times at the Emirates in a draw. Why has Arsenal's defense been such a problem since the World Cup? How do you approach a game against the best version of City this season yet while on a bad run of form? On the plus side for Harry, St. Totteringham's Day can be celebrated again after Arsenal after another historically embarrassing result for Tottenham at Newcastle. 6-1!! JAFP on Spotify
There may have been a feeling at the start of the season that Chelsea are a little far removed from a title challenge, but Todd Boehly's first year in charge of Chelsea could not have possibly gone worse. An infamous January window spend was followed up by a 2nd managerial sacking and a likely lower-midtable finish. Ali [@Tacticality_] and Fergal [@fergal_kerr] have a final debate over this strange season, whether there was any reasonable merit to how they spent, and where the club goes from here. Harry [@Haznicoll] joins briefly to offer his thoughts on Arsenal's 2-2 draw and the run-in which looks... worrisome. Plus: Beard growth techniques, Fergal's Gaelic Football and Old Firm experiences, Bundesliga fascination, a hotly contested Short King of the Week, and more! JAFP on Spotify
This was one eventful week. We did *not* get to a *lot* of significant events from all over the place. Arsenal's Anfield rollercoaster experience, riddled with tactical errors from both managers and ending with two saves that may well win Arsenal the title, doesn't even scratch the surface of just how much happened this week that we could not have foreseen: Lampard's reappointment by those who sacked him, Real Madrid winning 4-0 at Camp Nou only to be handed a defeat by Villarreal, and even a unique Short King of the Week showing, and so much more that didn't even make the cut on this week's show made for one of the more significant periods of the season to start the run-in. Fergal and George are here with (an invisible) Ali who joins later on after a weekend where Conte might've broken what little connection he had left with Tottenham. Plus: The 9-team relegation Royal Rumble keeps twisting and turning with Vieira sacked and.. apparently.. Roy Hodgeson taking over? Bundesliga results set up a classic Klassiker on April Fools' Day, Barcelona have practically won La Liga with Frank Kessie's laaaate first La Liga goal, Chelsea drew again, and one of their own might be crucial for *Liverpool* next season. A Pure Prem episode for the first time this season (because Ali is absent from this one) where Harry, Fergal, and George discuss a wild relegation battle and top 4 race, where seemingly everything will require the lowest points tally in Prem history and nobody knows where the points went. 9 teams (possibly? Possibly more?) are in the fight to go down, and nobody seems to want Champions League football. Why is that? What teams are the *actual* favorites to go down? Find out here. JAFP on Spotify
This is a once-in-a-lifetime result. United have won their first trophy since Jose Mourinho's first season with them, and finally look like they've arrived at a new era after years of turbulence. Newcastle have got themselves in the final and should stay positive about an upwards ride from here. Liverpool are the opposite - at the end of a cycle and definitely need a squad and cultural reset of ideas. Chelsea lost comfortably to Tottenham and things look grim. No more bleating on from Ali about Union Berlin as they were handed a 3-0 loss to Bayern in a title race 6-pointer, but speaking of Unions, the Philadelphia version have kicked off their version, as has the other team he works for, Dinamo Tbilisi! From the Union game emerged the man who, to Ali, is The King of Short Kings. Fantastic story behind this one that involved a 6'6" defender! All that on more after another eventful weekend where Harry definitely missed the Arsenal 3 pm kickoff because he definitely does not partake in illegal streaming, definitely, for sure. Losing to Southampton at Stamford Bridge was a new, alarming low. They are completely out of touch with the top 4 now, and Fergal is here to offer his ideas on how thing might look from here on in. Liverpool are good now! CL charge? Maybe? And Arsenal had a title run scare that was quickly put aside with City dropping points at newly promoted Nottingham Forest. The Bundesliga is headed to a 4-way? 5-way? 6-way? title race, and the Short King of the Week this week is as easy a decision as we'll take all season! Champions League football to come this week, and the lads offer up their predictions for that as well. JAFP on Spotify
Manchester City have ruined their legacy. All the league winning moments, domestic trebles, everything, in the can. Ali, Fergal, and George reflect on the week that started with City accused of 100 breaches of Financial Fair Play rules (6 dropped since), plus: An eventful weekend of VAR calls, more mental Bundesliga action, changes in the Serie A table, and a new bit to cover La Liga! This episode was recorded before a chaotic Monday morning that saw Leeds United's Jesse Marsh sacked and Man City get in yet more FFP trouble. Excuse us, football never sleeps
Liverpool are now pretty much confirmed to end the season trophyless, a matter of months after they came tantalizingly close to winning all four trophies on offer last season. The downfall has been truly insane, and we needed to talk about the big picture more. Ali [@Tacticality] dives in with Harry [@HazNicoll] and George [@georgesouthern8] to honestly discuss the more screaming elements of their failures, after a deep tactical dive into a slightly cagey but fascinating first encounter between this season's top 2 English sides where City progressed with a narrow 1-0 win against Harry's Gunners. This episode was recorded January 7th, even before Chelsea humiliatingly crash out of the FA Cup to the hands of Man City, leaving them with a probably trophyless season and massive danger of missing out on European competition altogether next season after a massive spending spree by Todd Boehly. Why have they gone so stale so quickly? It's a full house, and Ali did not escape having to talk about Liverpool's troubles yet again, as they drew at home to 19th placed Wolves who forced an FA Cup 3rd Round Replay against the holders at Molineux.
