Flight Mode are a three-piece emo band from Oslo, Norway that have been around since 2021. They've released a succession of three EP's, all with names derived from times and places. Out the gate this band hits a nostalgic tinge, which is bolstered by the wistful music they make. Clean guitars noodle over these mid-tempo tracks, with an intentional, quivering vocals delivered with palatable vocal deliveries. It's carrying the torch that bands like Death Cab For Cutie and The Appleseed Cast did in the early 2000's, with nods to the midwest emo sound of the late 90's. Recently their three EP's were compiled and released all together by Tiny Engines, which is the essential here as their discography to date has been flawless. Enjoy. Thanks for listening!!! WARNING! All ye who put your ears toward this episode should know that it is the final installment of Third Gear Scratch, which appropriately features one of my closest friends and bandmates, Mr Chris Metcalf of our band, The Life and Times. But before that Chris had done much wood-shedding with crazy great bands like Stella Link , SImple Lines and Lafayette. The latter one here Lafayette has in fact reformed since Chris has returned to KC after an almost 10 year run in Chicago, and has recently made a new record with Paul Malinowski, Shiner bassist that is due for release. We recount our time together in TLAT through 5 records and 3 more EPs and so many live shows and tours with bands like Russian Circles, Mono, Pelican, Murder By Death, Appleseed Cast, Sparta, Nueva Vulcano, Magnetic Morning and so many more. It's a fantastic way to close out this podcast that I've been so greatful to host and get to meet so many hugely talented artists who've inspired me and Chris is among the most inspiring. There's new Life and Times in the pipeline, so pour one out for Third Gear Scratch podcast but don't weep for me or us. We'll continue to make music as long as our bodies will let us. Thank you all so much for the support and for your ears and for all my amazing guests. ONWARD and Keep on making stuff. All the love!

After two long months of waiting, fans of Low Level Owl volume 1 finally got their finale in the form of it's companion piece Low Level Owl volume 2. This half is much more experimental and moody, but no less impactful than the first. Although there are less 'hits', this second release resonates with it's listener, as it's vague descriptions of life's hardships make it an incredibly personal experience. There's just enough of a narrative to push your mind into thoughts of unresolved angst, long lost loved ones, or the difficulties that we all face when we cross the threshold into adulthood. It really is emotional music at it's best, using a less ego driven approach to discuss emotional anguish than what came after it. I know some listeners drop off on part 2 of a double album, but this one is worth the wait. Brad and Dave theorize with Ben Birkinbine and they all discover something together. Much like the lyrics in this album, I'll be brief. The 2000s were a strange time for rock music, and it was dominate by angst and sadness, epitomized by emo and nu metal. Much of this was understandably seen as immature and lacking some world-weariness, but there were a lot of groups that either were coming from the previous shoegaze wave of music, or that changed their tune after a few years of angst and understanding of themselves. The Appleseed cast is one of the quintessential bands in this category. Starting in the 90s, they are one of the predecessors of the 2000s emo movement in music and really show the depths of feeling that are possible to portray through reverb-cranked guitars, long spacey jams, and minimalistic vocals... And also the kickass drums... You can't forget the drums. Today it's Brad and Dave with returning guest from the Mars Volta episode, Ben Birkinbine!!! On this week's episode of the Eight One Sixty, we celebrate KC music from the '90s. This show was a lot of fun to put together — digging through hard drives, looking up old articles and blog posts, and scouring through YouTube and Discogs. Things are weird right now, but maybe we can give you a brief moment of escape, to sit back and enjoy some KC music from a couple decades ago. We'll hear from these bands: The Appleseed Cast — still active and making beautiful noises Frogpond — lead singer Heidi Phillips is still making music Mates of State — they now call Connecticut home The Get Up Kids — still active and put out a great album, "Problems," last year The Gadjits — featuring the Phillips brothers from The Architects, Brandon Phillips and The Condition and Other Americans Mongol Beach Party — featuring musicians now active in bands like Victor & Penny, The Band That Fell To Earth KC, Miss Boating and more Shiner — still active and just released an amazing new album, "Schadenfreude" Season to Risk — check out Bryan Truta's new interview with Steve Tulipana of S2R at this link Dirtnap — featuring the musical wonderings of Billy Smith, Wade Williamson and Pete LaPorte, who went on to form Olympic Size Pamper the Madman — they had a reunion show late last year and maybe they will again someday Sin City Disciples — Patrick Sprehe of Center Cut Records suggested this one, and it comes with a special intro from the great and late John Peel of BBC Radio 1

[Intro: 11:55 | Outro: 1:31:02] In this episode, I speak with Dark Mountain Project co-founder and writer Dougald Hine. We discuss his new writing series ‘Notes From Underground,’ published weekly at Bella Caledonia, that explores "the deep context of the new climate movements that have surfaced since mid-2018." As Dougald notes in his article ‘Al Gore Didn’t Want You to Panic,’ the first of his series at Bella Caledonia: “What kind of process is it, then, that has been underway this past year? Here’s what I’ve been picking up from the people I meet, the audiences I speak to and the stories that come back to me: on a scale not seen before, people are having an encounter with climate change not as a problem that can be solved or managed, made to go away, or reconciled with some existing arc of progress, but as a dark knowledge that calls our path into question, that starts to burn away the stories we were told and the trajectories our lives were meant to follow, the entitlements we were brought up to believe we had, our assumptions about the shape of history, the kind of world we were born into and our place within it.” (http://bit.ly/34lnMwl) In this discussion, we explore this uncharted territory that we have collectively entered into, to which Dougald has rightfully defined as “some kind of initiatory process.” What does it mean, in a time of compounding and accelerating crises (climatologically, ecologically, socially), to undergo a process of initiatory rites? For those of us that are cognizant of the general spirit of the times we are in, what can we do to provide the resources, spaces, and structures to further grapple with the “dark material we were carrying all along?” Dougald and I explore this territory in this episode. Dougald Hine is the co-founder of The Dark Mountain Project, and the founder of Spacemakers. In the summer of 2019, after ten years with Dark Mountain, Dougald handed over his editorial and organizational responsibilities. He is currently focusing on writing and his latest project ‘a school called HOME,’ made in collaboration with his partner Anna Björkman. Dougald grew up in the north-east of England, and is now settled in central Sweden. [The episode also features a discussion between Elliot Robinson (the question featured in the introduction), social anthropologist Dr. Khalil Avi (featured in episode #220: http://bit.ly/LBWavi), and permaculture designer Tao Orion (author of ‘Beyond the War on Invasive Species’: http://bit.ly/2DE8WFA). This discussion can also be found here: http://bit.ly/elliot-tao-avi] Episode Notes: - Read Dougald’s ‘Notes From Underground’ series at Bella Caledonia: http://bit.ly/2Ds76r6 - Learn more about his work at his website: http://dougald.nu - Learn more about his project ‘a school called HOME’: https://aschoolcalledhome.org - Learn more about The Dark Mountain Project: https://dark-mountain.net - The songs featured in this episode are “Birds of Paradise” and “Steps and Numbers” by The Appleseed Cast from the album Low Level Owl, Vol. 1. Before today’s interview we are going to jump back to one of my favorite christian rock bands Reliant K with College Kids. Does it have anything worthwhile to say about the college experience? Where does it land on our scale from Dylan to July? Nicky’s pick is a noisy progressive record called The Fleeting Light of Impermanence by The Appleseed Cast out of Atlanta, Georgia. It’s ambiant noise of the best kind with the vocals as another fantastic instrument. https://graveface.bandcamp.com/album/the-fleeting-light-of-impermanence I’ve got Sailing England by The Pounds. This is another folk album (big shock) with mouth harp and banjo to show that the americana trend has most definitely crossed the pond. Each track has its own flavor. In some cases it’s almost a gimmick; like Miss Me building layers of sound, or Walking Around with its ambient noise. Thankfully the solid production keeps it from getting too annoying. There is a continuum between charming and depressing I basically hang out there. If you’re like me, this is the perfect mood music. https://thepounds.bandcamp.com/album/sailing-england Today’s guest is Jaron Weidner; entrepreneur and lead singer of the band Hundred Year Dash Check out The Symmetry Ep http://bit.ly/2W6Fbcb Here are some of the artists we talked about: Mxpx https://spoti.fi/2VR1e1q Five Iron Frenzy https://spoti.fi/2LGPQW3 The Chariot https://spoti.fi/2X8gF71 Tooth & Nail Records http://bit.ly/2QrIyEu The Postal Service https://spoti.fi/2M7sWax Mutemath https://spoti.fi/2YVqHsF Passion Pit https://spoti.fi/2X84cjF Title Fight https://spoti.fi/2K2Z50i Basement https://spoti.fi/30L5XWe Frightened Rabbit https://spoti.fi/2YJF7Me Jaron Recommends Brother Sister - Mewithoutyou http://bit.ly/2I19cQE Disintegration - The Cure http://bit.ly/2K4Do00 Julianne Baker http://bit.ly/2VSc3QK Find all the episodes at http://www.ancapmusic.com Check out the show’s spotify soundtrack here:https://spoti.fi/2MFxkKG To Support Us Join The Freedom Choir here: http://www.supportsll.com Click here to sign up for email list:http://bit.ly/2MDWoSg Want the best course in music & liberty online? http://freedomsong365.com
Today, we welcome Chris Crisci from The Appleseed Cast. Chris has been on my list for the entire 8 years of this podcast’s existence. I am honored to finally have him on the podcast. I loved Chris’ appreciation for the scene, constantly challenging himself, and not resting while making the band work alongside his day job, family and life. The band’s discography is one of my favorites in all of my music and to finally hear some of the questions I’ve had over the years was a true treat. Last, to note, there is a new album by the band entitled “The Fleeting Light of Impermanence” out of Graveface Records that we discuss. You can start listening to this on Friday, or if you’re listening to this in the future, it’s on your favorite streaming service. Chris was honest, sweet, and thoughtful throughout this beautiful conversation and I hope you enjoy.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
If you lived in Lawrence between 2000 and 2002, there's a good chance you remember some of the city's key bands: The Get Up Kids. The Appleseed Cast. Mates of State. Laces Loose. Laces who? The quartet made its mark on the scene at the time with idiosyncratic compositions that defied songwriting logic and probably had more than one listener uttering, "They're an acquired taste." Over the next few weeks, the quartet — guitarist Torin Andersen (who is employed as an engineer by KMUW), bassist/vocalist Adam Crispin, keyboardist Matt Campbell and drummer Ben Steinbauer — will perform its first shows in 17 years. And Steinbauer, an acclaimed documentarian, has brought a film crew with him to capture both the spirit and the spit. "There was never a question about whether or not I'd film this," Steinbauer says. "I was always going to film it. "Why I'm filming it is maybe a deeper question that I don't totally have the answer to, and what this will become, I'm not 100 percent sure. I think it

I take you with me on the road for this six song, a carefully crafted episode that I threw together in haste. Theme? Of course, if you want to hear more of the hockey talk, check out The Crazy Canucks. In this episode, we talk about the Northern Voice conference and try to make our case to the organizers of the event as to why we deserve one of the travel bursaries to attend the event. We also talk about Rebecca’s upcoming involvement with the Amazing Hunt in Vancouver. Matthew Good has a new album that he’s recording, and your dear hosts have a few other tidbits to share in that area. [Show Notes Link]Direct Download Link | | Direct download link I haven’t done anything like this in quite a while, so I decided to take the minidisc and lapel mic with me as I had some things to take care of yesterday. It has been one year since I moved to Vancouver, so I talk a little about what the whole experience has been like. I also hesitate to say that this is the official, one year episode as Rebecca wants to do some recording on the topic as well. A second part might materialize soon. I also talk about the new podcasting project that I launched this past week. The Crazy Canucks is an extension of the “Hockey Talk” segment from this podcast, but check out the website to get more of the story. Also, I had the opportunity to partake in a project regarding the oldest, surviving film footage of Vancouver from 1907. In the second portion of today’s episode, you get to go on a ride with me in the car as I drive in a car by myself for only the second time that I’ve been living in Vancouver. All my apologies for the quality, but I promise to not make the same mistake next time. [Show Notes Link]Direct Download Link | | Direct download link There are a few topics that we hit today that I wanted to glance over. This is the second episode this week in quick turn around fashion, but I’m getting the handle on this new mixer and feeling a lot better. Hopefully this makes up for the lack of episodes as a result of my sinus infection from last week. I hope to post another episode on Friday, if not by the weekend. Topics for today include a RadioZoom in Tech segment about some new things from Apple, Hockey Talk about the Canucks and Sidney Crosby, and some listener feedback. I also share a handful of stories in the mix of things. [Show Notes Link]Direct Download Link | | Direct download link It’s the CouchCast! However, I think the audio on this sucks, but that’s what I get for trying something new. My setup is still handicapped by the fact that I don’t work at a radio station anymore with access to all sorts of great toys to do recording with. I hope you can handle it. Cheers and jeers are appreciated. Also in today’s episode, I give you a small update on how my dad is doing with his surgery, some listener feedback, some plugs for other podcasts, and a little more insight as to what I’m trying to do here. [Show Notes Link]Direct Download Link | | Direct download link Today’s episode features a couple of plugs for other, Vancouver podcasts. I invite you to check out Dave Olsen’s Canucks Outsider podcast, especially if you are a Canucks hockey fan. Then a plug for the alt.cast, as Chris played a song from the Podsafe Music Network that I could just not resist. I also take a look at the Sony BMG issue regarding their DRM root kit debacle. Here are the links that I mentioned: – ZDNet UK: “Sony offers to replace rootkit CDs” – Times Online (UK): “Sony drops anti-piracy tool that lets in hackers” – idiotabroad.com: “CD’s affected by the Sony-BMG spyware” I also take a moment to do an update of how things have changed now that I live in Vancouver. I hope to make this an ongoing segment that I revisit from time to time. This isn’t just a whole new city for me, but it’s also a whole new country.
