This week's guest is one of our favorites over here at Left of the Dial. M.A.G.S. is the solo project of Buffalo-born, LA-based artist Elliott Douglas, and listeners of our podcast should be plenty familiar with M.A.G.S. We've been singing his praises for as long as Andrea has been hosting Left of the Dial, and definitely since 2021's Say Things That Matter, an album that we absolutely love. M.A.G.S.' third album, Destroyer, is out August 4th on Smartpunk Records, and he's with us today to talk about a few songs off of that album and a couple other songs he's brought along to share, too. We talk about finding beauty in total ruin, seeing your music in colors, connecting with others through art, and so much more. You know, we keep it light. This is a great conversation with a really thoughtful, unique artist, and we can't wait for our listeners to hear it.Pre-order Destroyer now!Keep up with M.A.G.S. in all the usual places.M.A.G.S. is going on tour. HEY TEAM WE ARE BACK!!! So, I think we talked about this on the show before, but 4 years ago now we started a conversation with friend of the show and well known Delco native Michael Berdan about movies and music and all manner of things. Our plan was to record with him prior to a show he was playing at PhilaMOCA with Dark Blue. However, there were issues (intentional sabotage by Sharky) and we postponed our conversation till we had time again. Well, we got busy as you know, but more importantly Berdan’s awesome project, UNIFORM blew up and well, getting back together went from “in a month or so” to right now, the apocalypse. Sure, it took us four years to finally follow through on our promise, but look, HERE WE ARE! The timing is great because we have more time to connect, it is the spooky season so we all have spooky on the mind, and UNIFORM has a new record out that both Josh and I are obsessed with.  For this episode we were inspired by a few things, one was the fact that we all know each other a little better not from shows, but from the now gone EXHUMED FILMS 24 HOUR HORRORTHON, by Berdan talking about his October schedule he had programmed, and by the Patreon exclusive episode of HORROR BUSINESS Lore and I did where we programmed our own 24 hour Horrorthon THAT’S RIGHT, STRAP IN, BECAUSE WE HAVE EACH PROGRAMMED OUR OWN IMAGINARY HORRORTHON FOR YOU TO ENJOY! Besides enjoying hanging out virtually with our friend Berdan and discussing horror, my personal goal for this activity was to surpass the list I did for Patreon. Was I succesful? YOU DECIDE!!! It was an utter pleasure to discuss music and life and Delco and of course HORROR with Berdan, he was easily one of our favorite guests and we cannot wait to have him back on the show. HELLO THERE CITIZENS, ARE YOU READY FOR ANOTHER DIRE YET ENTERTAINING TRANSMISSION FROM PLANET CINEPUNX? That works, right? Hey friends, we return to you with another dynamic episode, filled with thrills and chills and…spills? This time for episode 70 we welcomed Rob Skvarla, writer/programmer/cineaste/unrepentant Goth Sad BOY! I am so fat in that last picture, holy shit. Rob brought a topic to us which we would NEVER have chosen on our own but relates to his own research in gradschool, that is Psuedo-Documentaries. The three Rob chose for us relate, in his telling, directly to the later films of the Satanic Panic moment, and now to such films as The Clinton Files. The films we watched and discussed were MONDO CANE   THE CHARIOTS OF THE GODS   THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH   We are pretty straight up with Rob that these films were not always fun to watch, but they led us to a fun and interesting discussion. Rob chose the music for the middle section, it is from one of the movies mentioned so see if you can figure it out, and our opening song is Crucifix. There is, I suspect, more to say. However, I just want to get this episode out there for you to hear it Big thanks as always to LVAC    for their generous support, and you should also check out PhilaMOCA cause Rob works there Do us a favor: rate and review us on iTunes. for some reason this is the biggest measure for podcast success, and we tryna get some sponsors on this jawn so we can start paying folks actual money. Dan and Garrett are joined by Philadelphia comedian Amanda Taylor and special guest Mike Doherty to talk about one of Mike's all-time favorite movie movie's - Point Break. Calling it an "emotional" action movie seems reductive, but that is the secret sauce that future Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow brought to this very 90's buddy-cop meets too-deep-undercover tropey, action blockbuster. Her attentiveness to the growing relationship between Utah and Bodie makes the cat-and-mouse chases between the two characters have real weight and stakes that we often don't get in films of this variety. And damn if she doesn't know how to create a striking, lasting image on screen (here's lookin at you facemower). WE’RE BAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCKKKKKKK!!! Greetings you OH SO patient denizens of the city known as CINEPUNX, and welcome to the latest installment of our wild and crazy show. yay? I am sure, while we were away, you check out ALL THE AMAZING FEATURES ON OUR BLOG! (you better have, and told your cohorts) We also had, what you might call, a bit of a recording mishap! This episode is with the lovely and amazing Samm Deighan! You may know her from her blog, SATANIC PANDEMONIUM which is truly great. Two other things you should check out though is a magazine she was recently featured in called Diabolique in which she writes about the director of Alucarda Moctezuma. She is also featured in the book SATANIC PANIC and will be featured at an event for the book happening at PhilaMOCA! (SO MANY LINKS!!) So we have to say a big THANK YOU to Samm not only for being on the show, but doing it twice. That recording mishap? Well we recorded a long and interesting episode, and when it came time to convert, it all went away. Gone. Forever. Considering Liam’s laptop died just a few days later, the problem was likely to be found there. Regardless, Samm was nice enough to come back right away and record again with us, but this led to our current delay in getting you a new episode! Many apologies! In this episode we spend some time discussing British horror films, three in particular HORROR EXPRESS QUATERMASS AND THE PIT RAW MEAT All three are great and definitely worth checking out. We also discussed contemporary vs classic horror, inspired by an article on her blog. Check her writing out, she is GREAT! Also big thanks to our friend Len Carmichael for his help! Check out his studio, Landmine! SOUND NOTES: After the disaster of last week, we tried recording in a new program. We hope you brought your vulcan haircuts and white belts for this special San Diego focused episode of the illustrious and jovial CINEPUNX!!! Josh and Liam were given the unbelievable opportunity to interview director Bill Perrine whose new film, Its Gonna Blow!! San Diego’s Music Undergroud 1986-1996 played at PhilaMOCA on January 16th. It was awesome, expect a review from Liam soon. We were joined by Joseph Gervasi of LOUD!FAST!PHILLY! and of course Exhumed Films and his brother Bull who you may know from Policy of Three and if you listened to our episode where we interview Joseph then you know both were instrumental members of the Cabbage Collective, without whom there would be no punk shows in Philly. Not only did Joseph and Bull bring class and gravitas to our otherwise ridiculous dog and pony show, Joseph had the idea to try and make this interview happen in the first place so we owe him a giant thank you! We hope you enjoy this format as we have a few more interview coming up with Joseph and possibly Bull on board. YAY!! We also of course want to extend our gratitude to Bill Perrine. He was gracious and understanding in answering our questions and really a patient interview subject all together. We are wacky dudes but he was a good sport. The film is great, and if you get a chance to see it or are interested in hosting a screening of it, we cannot recommend it enough. You can find him here Ok, that was a lotta links! Of course, we would be remiss not to say a huge thank you and endorsement to our sponsors FEDERAL DONUTS! SOUND NOTES This episode has our first experimentation with recording over the internet, and predictably, it sounds gross. However, it does not sound as gross as it COULD so that is great. The sound during the interview is a little iffy because there were not enough Mics for everyone and there was an excess of background noise. That being said, everything is fine, no major issues. GREETINGS FRIENDS AND STRANGERS ALIKE! WELCOME TO EPISODE 15 OF THE CINEPUNX PODCAST!!! A few important program notes: 1. On this episode we consistently refer to the episode as “EPISODE 14” when clearly last episode was 14. Sorry but really why do you care anyway? Jerk. 2. Funny story, you see we did this all before. We set up and interviewed our good friend Matt Garrett, but the recording turned out to be unlistenable garbage. oops. We are not good at this sometimes. Hence why we are confused on this, our second try, as to what episode we are even recording. It is silly. 3. Matt Garrett is a local Philly film personality and old school punk! Matt has directed, written, produced and currently curates an amazingly interesting Horror short film program called Vivisections which occurs quarterly at the Philamoca! 4. You can see Matt’s short film, BEATING HEARTS, here!!! It is fucked up, but in a good way. 5. Thanks to everyone for listening and supporting us, to Matt for speaking to us, to our wives for putting up with our recording process which is painful and annoying!! Peace Out Yall!!!   We were honored for this episode to be joined by Eric Bresler of PhilaMOCA, Cinedelphia (the website and the film fest), Unknown Japan Film Fest and all around man about town. We also got to talk to the most famous 12 year old in Philadelphia, Lil Sean, about his upcoming Lil Sean Day event as well as the film he is working on for that event. Great conversation, Eric is awesome and fun to speak with and Sean is one of the coolest kids ever. I feel like I was a little off my game, my sugar was a mess, but Josh is charming as always. Here are some links to stuff we discussed in the episode http://www.nickcave.it/extra.php?IdExtra=78 http://www.philamoca.org/ http://cinedelphia.com/ https://www.facebook.com/events/695909810463148/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2730162/ as usual, sound is ok but not great, thanks for your patience with that. I also unintentionally insult stuff, again. Sorry for being a jerk. The post EPISODE 14: INTERVIEW WITH ERIC BRESLER AND LIL SEAN OF @PhilaMOCA AND @CinedelphiaFF appeared first on Cinepunx.
