The OUT THERE ON THE EDGE OF EVERYTHING? podcast is an absolutely phenomenal show that never ceases to impress me. From the moment I stumbled upon it during a recent podcast search, I was instantly hooked. This show is a treasure trove of insight and independent thinking, making it an absolute must-listen for those who are serious about performance and personal growth. The host fearlessly covers controversial topics that are thought-provoking and engaging, ensuring that every episode is full of great guests and captivating discussions.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the incredible range of guests that the host manages to bring on. Each episode features experts in their respective fields, from neuroscience to psychology to philosophy, allowing listeners to gain valuable insights from a variety of perspectives. The discussions are always intellectually stimulating and leave me with many new ideas to ponder long after the episode has ended. It's refreshing to hear different viewpoints being respectfully explored, providing a well-rounded and comprehensive understanding of complex subjects.
Another standout aspect of this podcast is its ability to keep my attention throughout every episode. Whether it's a deep dive into mindfulness or an exploration of cutting-edge scientific research, there hasn't been a single episode that has failed to captivate me. The host has a knack for asking thought-provoking questions and keeping the conversation flowing smoothly. This makes for not only an enjoyable listening experience but also ensures that I constantly come away with new knowledge and perspectives.
However, one potential downside of this podcast is the rate at which the host speaks. Some may find his fast-paced speech difficult to keep up with, especially when delving into complex concepts or intricate details. While this may be a minor distraction for some listeners, it would greatly benefit the overall listening experience if the pace could be slowed down slightly. This would allow for better comprehension and absorption of information without sacrificing any of the engaging content.
In conclusion, The OUT THERE ON THE EDGE OF EVERYTHING? podcast is an absolute gem that I cannot recommend enough. With its great guests, thought-provoking discussions, and unapologetic exploration of controversial topics, it is a show that will surely leave a lasting impact on anyone who gives it a chance. Despite the minor distraction of the host's rate of speech, this podcast remains an invaluable resource for those seeking intellectual stimulation and personal growth.
EPISODE 215 Your attachment style, is a psychological blueprint that influences how you relate to others. Attachment theory was developed by British psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, John Bowlby and later expanded by American-Canadian developmental psychologist, Mary Ainsworth. Attachment theory is based on how you bonded with your primary caregivers (e.g., your mother, grandmother, aunt, father, etc.) which tends to mirror how you bond with others as an adult. There are four types of personal and professional attachment styles: (1) secure; (2) anxious; (3) avoidant; and (4) disorganized. Attachment style is very important in your personal life. Attachment style plays a surprisingly powerful role in your professional life as well. Your professional attachment style influences leadership, communication, collaboration, negotiation, and even how you handle success or failure. How can you change your current personal or professional attachment style? Creating a new attachment style by rewiring your own emotional habits allows you to create healthier connections and build new relationships in a new way to create a positive impact in your own life. EPISODE 214 A traumatic event is defined as “a distressing experience that causes significant emotional, psychological, or physical harm.” Examples of traumatic events include such things as a car accident, a death of a loved one, a breakup, a loss of a job, or an ongoing series of events, like a chronic health problem, continuous physical, emotional or sexual abuse. These traumatic events typically trigger a range of intense feelings and emotions, including fear, helplessness, and a sense of being overwhelmed. Post-traumatic growth (PTG) is defined as “positive psychological changes that emerge as a result of struggling with adversity and trauma.” PTG includes the idea that individuals can not only recover from a trauma but also experience significant personal development and personal transformation from it. PTG involves changes in understanding oneself, others, and the world, and can include increased personal strength, appreciation for life, and a significant shift in priorities. How can you use PTG to overcome any traumas you have experienced in your own life? Traumas are life's hardest moments, but can be the very thing when viewed as just a temporary setback that propels you into a new stronger version of yourself and create a significant positive impact in your life. EPISDOE 212 The concept of micro-achievements focuses on the cumulative impact of small, consistently completed tasks on overall personal and professional development. This approach is particularly powerful because it taps into the psychological principle that achieving even minor goals can provide a substantial motivational boost in your mental health, creating a positive feedback loop that propels further successes for you. When you recognize that you have completed a micro-task, no matter how small, it triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. This release encourages repeated behavior, helping you to establish and reinforce new habits. Over time, these micro-achievements add up, leading to quick substantial improvements and changes in you and your engrained patterns. They can significantly improve your health, knowledge, productivity, and overall well-being. More importantly, as these small tasks become habits, they require less effort to maintain, freeing you up to pursue other goals. How do you effectively utilize micro-achievements in your own life? By focusing on micro-achievements, you can create to create a significant positive impact and a new trajectory in your own life. In contemporary personal development, self-actualization is often discussed in the context of achieving a balanced and fulfilling life and living fully in the present moment. As a psychological theory proposed in 1943, does self-actualization still have any relevance in today's world? How do you achieve self-actualization in your own life? Self-actualization involves integrating physical health, mental well-being, and personal passions to lead a life that feels both meaningful and satisfying. Working on yourself to achieve self-actualization helps you to create a positive impact in your own life. EPISODE 186 When you are faced with an important decision, how do you evaluate the risk associated with the decision? Evaluating risk involves assessing the potential outcomes of a decision, considering the likelihood of those outcomes, and weighing their potential impact. Four Square Risk Management is a simple, but very effective technique used to visually represent and assess risks in a structured manner. It involves using a four-square grid to categorize risks based on their probability and impact. This method helps in identifying which risks require immediate attention and which risks can be monitored over time. How do you use the Four-Square Risk Matrix to evaluate risk for a decision you need to make? The Four-Square Risk Matrix helps you effectively visualize, prioritize and manage risks so you can create a positive impact in your life. EPISODE 185 I was just in Madison, Wisconsin to attend a college graduation ceremony as my daughter graduated from the University of Wisconsin. During the graduation ceremony, one of the graduation speakers told the audience that the campus in Madison, Wisconsin, on which the university sits was originally land that was part of Native American Ho- Chunk Nation. The Ho-Chunk people are called “the people of the scared voice.” This speaker went on to talk about how the Native American Ho-Chunk women would start with a single bead on a thread and keep adding additional beads of different colors to that thread. This process would be repeated on a large number of threads. The threads with all the beads were then weaved together until they created a beautiful work of art. You create the fabric of your own life by adding personal experiences, your own beads, to threads in your own life. Metaphorically this bead work refers to the essential elements that make up and shape your own personal experiences and existence. How do you create a new, unique tapestry in your own life? Creating a new, beautiful unique tapestry allows you to create a positive impact in your own life and inspire others. EPISODE 184 Are you forward-facing focused? Or is your focus in some other direction? Focus is defined as “a state of mind that produces a clear visual definition of what you desire in your life moving forward.” Forward-facing focus in a person's life refers to a mindset and practice for listening to your intuition, adapting to change, being innovative and maintaining personal growth over time on the best time-lines available to you. Forward-facing focus gives you the ability to anticipate and prepare for future needs and directly contributes to success as you define it in your own life. While forward-facing focus is inherently future-oriented, it also involves a level of mindfulness about the present moment. Mindfulness about the present moment means actively engaging with current tasks and responsibilities in your life while consistently working on future goals and objectives. How can you put forward-facing focus into practice in your own life? With forward-facing focus, you can create a positive impact in your own life and better position yourself to lead a more fulfilling life. A nexus point is defined as “a point on your personal timeline that is a critical moment in your life where a specific event, unique set of circumstances or a person has a significantly and profound impact on your life moving forward based on the choices you may make.” A nexus point is so pivotal on your personal timeline, an energy line, that it becomes an entry point for a large number of possible choices and possible outcomes in your life. A nexus point is defined as “a point on your personal timeline that is a critical moment in your life where a specific event, unique set of circumstances or a person has a significantly and profound impact on your life moving forward based on the choices you may make.” Examples of personal nexus points include meeting your significant other, a marriage, a birth, moving to a new city, graduating from college, starting a new career, being promoted to a new position, etc. Scientific researchers consider nexus points as points that cause a branch in the timeline of a person leading to the creation of multiple different possible timelines from that point. EPISODE 182 Psychological “glimmers” are small, fleeting, micro-moments of positivity and positive experiences that can significantly impact your emotional well-being. Glimmers, as introduced by social worker Deb Dana, are specific examples of micro-moments that elicit feelings of happiness, hope, and safety. Glimmers foster a sense of calm, connection, empathy, happiness and joy and effectively counter daily fear and stress in your own life. Why are glimmers so important? According to other psychologists, you actually have an inherent bias towards negativity in your own life. That is, you have propensity to learn from and use negative emotions, negative experiences and negative information far more than positive emotions, positive experiences and positive information in your own life. Glimmers help you overcome the negative bias and bring a sense of connection and regulation to your nervous system to move you into a new emotional state which allows you to temporarily feel calm and content. How you do generate glimmers in your own life? Experiencing, acknowledging and embracing glimmers creates a positive impact in your own life. EPISODE 179 Let me tell you another true story. A few years ago, I was invited by a friend of mine to play a round of golf at a country club golf course in the suburbs of Chicago. We were to play with my friend's brother and his boss, both doctors in private practice. I arrived at the country club with a nice shirt that did not have a collar. My friend was dressed the same way. This country club has its own rules and etiquette for playing golf. When we arrived at the first tee, the starter indicated that the rules of the country club were very clear and no one could play golf in a shirt that did not have a collar. Since my friend and I both lived 45 minutes from the course, there was no way we could drive home to change. We were told our only alternative was to buy a shirt from the pro shop if we wanted to play. Every shirt in the pro shop was priced at least $90, making the required purchase a very expensive one. My friend and I decided to both purchase shirts with size 3XL (3 extra large). Let me say, we both looked ridiculous. The shirt can down past my knees and I could have fit three of me inside the shirt. As funny as it turned out, this is one unexpected situation for which I was not prepared. How do you prepare for unexpected situations and events in your own life? Always remember to PACK before you do anything. EPISODE 178 One buzzword I am seeing a lot lately is “onboarding.” Onboarding is defined as “the action or process of integrating a new employee into an organization.” As an attorney and a business coach, that made me think about something. I wonder how onboarding has changed in corporate America since I experienced it myself? Let me tell you another true story. In my previous career as a professional software engineer, I worked for two tech companies, AT&T Bell Laboratories and U.S. Robotics both located in the suburbs of the City of Chicago. I experienced two different personal onboarding processes as a new employee at AT&T Bell Labs and U.S. Robotics. What new things are now being included in the onboarding process for new employees? EPISODE 176 It is that time of year again when everybody is thinking about making New Year's Resolutions. Many people use the start of a new year as an opportunity for reflection and self-improvement, making it a popular and enduring tradition. Many of you fail at your New Year's Resolutions for a lot of different reasons. However, remember: "If you slip up, do not give up!" Stephen Lesavich, PhD One big reason New Year's Resolutions fail is that they do not include a specific time-frame for completion. The success of your New Year's Resolutions depends largely on your individual commitment and setting reasonable, achievable goals with a specific time-frame. How can you achieve success with your New Year's Resolutions? Your success must involve a combination of careful planning, realistic goal-setting, and consistent follow-through based on a specific time frame. EPISODE 175 Let me tell you another true story. I had a law office on South LaSalle Street in the financial district of downtown Chicago for over a decade. One summer morning I had a meeting scheduled with the CEO of a financial company in my office to discuss an important legal matter. As I walked to work, there was a thunderstorm occurring. When I turned onto South LaSalle Street I was hit by a microburst from the thunderstorm whose effect was magnified by tunnel effect of the tall buildings. A microburst is “a pattern of intense winds and rain that descends from rain clouds, that hits the ground, and fans out horizontally in a wave.” The wind and rain were so strong in the microburst, in just a few seconds I was completely drenched. Every inch of my clothes were 100% wet including my underwear and socks. Even my shoes were filled with about an inch of water. I looked like I had stepped in a shower with all my clothes on. I experienced a microburst caused by a weather event on South LaSalle Street in Chicago. You can experience a personal microburst in your own life. A “personal microburst” is a psychological event that occurs in your own life. A personal microburst is situation where you experience a strong, rapid, intense stressful event that causes you to be abruptly drenched and overwhelmed with negative feelings and emotions. How can you weather the storm of a personal microburst that occurs in your own life? Weathering the storm of a personal microburst can create a significant positive impact in your own life. EPISODE 174 Are you recognizing gradual change occurring in your life? Let me tell you another true story. The city I live in is considering closing several public grade schools, middle schools and one high-school due to declining enrollment. In the neighborhood I grew up in, in just one square block, there were 13 households with 37 children. When my mom passed away, in that same one square block I grew up in, in the same 13 houses, there were just three school aged children. Three. The changes in my old neighborhood represent cycles of gradual change and necessary transitions. Such cycles of gradual change and transitions are occurring in your own life. Gradual changes are often incremental, happening in small steps over longer periods of time. You may not recognize gradual patterns of change as they slowly occur in your own life. How do you learn to adapt to gradual change in your own life in a positive way? Adapting to gradual change creates a positive impact in your own life. EPISODE 173 What are your financial values? Can you define them? Can you change them? Are you afraid to change your financial values? A value is defined as “a person's principles or standards of behavior; one's judgment of what is important in life.” Financial values are defined as “what you think or believe about debt, credit, spending, money and investments.” Do you know the root of your financial values? A root is defined as “the origin or source of something.” Let me tell you another true story. I first learned about my initial root for my financial values because of one of the small plastic toys in a box on the window sill of a drug store I wanted to buy when I was 6 years old. Wanting to purchase that toy provided a positive root for my own initial financial values. The purchase also planted a seed of interest in me for financial matters. That seed grew over my lifetime and motivated me to co-author an award-winning and best-selling book, The Plastic Effect: How Urban Legends Influence the Use and Misuse of Credit Cards. My book is a self-help book helping people understand credit, debt and how credit cards and debit cards actual work. The book won an independent publisher award, named the best new book in the finance/budgeting category and became a best-seller in paper and electronic formats on Amazon. What are your financial values right now? What is the root of your own financial values? Determining the root of your financial values and planting seeds to create new financial values will allow you to make a positive impact in your life moving forward. EPISODE 172 I am sure all of you have been on an interstate highway or a county highway and have seen a car carrier. A car carrier is a type of trailer or semi-trailer designed to efficiently transport multiple passenger vehicles. Multiple vehicles are loaded on multiple levels of the car carrier trailer. Actual car carriers are symbolic of how some groups of people travel on their own soul paths on their journey through life. The car carrier represents a set of collective energy that people are obedient to and are under the control of some other person or some other thing who is energetically driving the car carrier represented by the set of collective energy. Such sets of collective energy include such things family, religious, spiritual, cultural, political and other types of collective energy. I call this obedience to any collective energy “the Car Carrier Effect.” STEPHEN LESAVICH, PHD Being part of a set of collective energy that is included in an energetic car carrier means you are living in a passive, dis-empowered state. In most instances you are not making any individual decisions, are not accepting responsibility for any decisions you do make and are not trying to co-create your own life in any way. So what should you do if have determined your energetic passenger vehicle is parked on one or more energetic car carriers in your life? Being aware what energetic car carriers your energetic passenger vehicle is parked on can help you make adjustments to make a positive impact in your life. EPISODE 171 Let me tell you another true story. A little while ago I was driving down a very busy county highway and there was a guy standing in the middle of the road. He was waiving his arms and I stopped my truck. He indicated that he ran out of gas and asked if I could give him a ride to the nearest gas station. Since there is a gas station near my office, I agreed. I drove the guy to the gas station and he purchased a plastic gas can and filled it with a gallon of gas. He then asked me if I could drive him back to his vehicle because he had no way of getting back. I agreed again. When we arrived at his vehicle, the guy just got out of my truck and walked away without saying a word. Not a thank you. Not a good bye. Nothing. Not a single word. I had given about an hour of my time and a gallon of my own gas to take him to the gas station and then back to his vehicle. I have to admit, I was expecting a different response, a different attitude and showing some gratitude. I believe the man I helped was letting his attitude about running of gas and having a bad day override his ability to express any gratitude. What are some advantages of practicing gratitude instead of attitude in your own life? Practicing gratitude allows you to create a positive impact in your own life and in the life of others Out There on the Edge of Everything®… Stephen Lesavich, PhD Copyright © 2023 by Stephen Lesavich, PhD.
