Personal development is supposed to help you grow, but what if it's actually keeping you stuck? In this episode, we break down the hidden traps of self-improvement—where growth turns into self-sabotage—and how to move forward. What We Cover: The “I Need More Information” Trap – Learning without action isn't progress. Execution is where real growth happens. Perfectionism Paralysis – Waiting for the “perfect” moment? It doesn't exist. Progress beats perfection every time. The “Healing” Excuse – Self-work is valuable, but don't use it as an excuse to avoid discomfort and real-world action. Chasing Motivation Instead of Discipline – Motivation fades. If you don't build habits, you'll stay stuck. Hustle vs. Inner Work Conflict – Too much grinding leads to burnout, too much “inner work” leads to inaction. Balance is key. The “I'm So Different” Syndrome – Overcomplicating your struggles keeps you from progress. Success leaves clues—follow them. How to Actually Use Personal Development the Right Way: Learn, but apply immediately. Take imperfect action—don't wait for the right moment. Be self-aware, but don't get stuck in endless healing. Stop chasing motivation—focus on habits. Balance hustle with self-reflection. This episode is all about breaking free from the self-improvement cycle that keeps you stuck and actually making progress. If this resonates, share it with someone who needs to hear it. And if you're enjoying the podcast, leave a review—it helps more people find it. Interested in working with a coach? Can a single conversation radically transform a relationship? This week's guest on The Unbeatable Mind, former film director and founder of experience design studio ‘The Skin Deep', Topaz Adizes certainly thinks so. After years in the film industry, Topaz found himself asking the question, “how is the emotional experience of being human shifting in light of all this technology?” Embracing this question prompted him to found ‘The Skin Deep', an experience design studio formed to help people form deeper connections with the most important people in their life. Together, Topaz and Mark delve into the concept of deep listening and the nuances of forming deep connections through the power of well-constructed questions. Topaz details the transformative potential of sitting with discomfort, and discusses a topic he clearly has much familiarity with, the unique art of storytelling. The nature of human interaction runs deep and is multifaceted, but Topaz contains profound insights and asks equally profound questions—a skill that opens up infinite possibilities in which deeper connections can emerge. Key Takeaways: The Power of Questions: Discover how asking well-constructed, non-binary questions without an agenda can deepen connections and foster empathy. Transforming Challenges Into Opportunities: Dive into Topaz's unique journey from the world of filmmaking to exploring the ever-evolving emotional experience in a tech-driven world. Sitting With Discomfort: Hear about Topaz's belief that it's sitting in the discomfort of the question—-not the answer—-that holds the potential to unlock a myriad of possibilities. Creating Honest Dialogues: Realize how providing a space for individuals to have intimate conversations, whether it's in a personal or professional setting, can lead to healing, growth, and stronger bonds. Topaz Adizes is driven by a deep curiosity in human connection. What happens when we create space to explore what is really possible between us? How can we unlock the true power and potential of deeper human connection? He's come to learn how asking powerfully, well constructed questions in the right environment can provoke, challenge and shift the direction of our lives. He's seen this magic unfold again and again over the last 10 years in his work as the founder of The Skin Deep experience design studio and as the creator of Emmy Award winning {THE AND} documentary, video series, and card games. In today's world of growing polarization, algorithmic silos, abundant distractions and increasing rate of change, the power of human connection has never been more essential. In a deeply engaging episode of the Lead with Levity Podcast, hosted by Dr. Heather Walker, the spotlight was on Amber Ontiveros, a trailblazer in addressing and healing workplace discrimination. Ontiveros, with a rich background spanning from working with the Bush and Obama administrations to her profound personal journey towards understanding consciousness and unconscious bias, shared insights that promise a transformative approach to workplace dynamics and personal growth. The Path to End DiscordThe conversation opened with the all-too-familiar challenges many people face in creating environments where everyone feels safe and valued—spaces where creativity and ideas flourish without fear of judgment or retaliation. Ontiveros delved deep into the “two sides of the coin” conundrum, emphasizing the dance between individual intentions and collective narratives. Her work focuses on bringing to light the internal scripts running within us, challenging and healing them to foster a truly inclusive environment.Dr. Walker and Ontiveros explored the concept of discord in the workplace, exemplified through a scenario involving "Nick", a character resistant to feedback. This example served to introduce Ontiveros' unique approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)—one that leverages personal transformation as a gateway to tackling broader societal and organizational challenges.Healing the Four WoundingsA pivotal moment in the podcast was Ontiveros' revelation of the "four woundings"—beliefs deeply embedded in our subconscious that perpetuate cycles of discord and discrimination. These are:1. I am not worthy.2. I am not enough.3. I have to win.4. I don't have enough.Ontiveros argued that these woundings, universal to all, fuel the fires of discrimination and personal dissatisfaction. Her stirring call to action was for individuals to recognize these woundings within themselves to heal and move forward, both personally and within their communities.Mindful Listening and Other Tools for TransformationThe discussion introduced mindful listening—a technique Ontiveros employs to understand and dissolve the barriers erected by unconscious bias. By focusing on the breath and engaging in self-inquiry, one can uncover and address the root of discriminatory behaviors and thoughts. This tool, among others shared by Ontiveros, offers a practical approach to navigating and transforming complex interpersonal dynamics.Final ThoughtsAmber Ontiveros' appearance on the Lead with Levity Podcast provided not just food for thought but a call to action for anyone looking to make a substantive change in their lives and the lives of others. Her holistic approach to addressing discrimination, rooted in personal healing and consciousness, offers a refreshing, deeply needed perspective in today's discourse on diversity and inclusion. For those looking to dive deeper into Ontiveros' work or seeking guidance on their healing journey, visiting her website, healthefourwoundings.com, is a promising first step towards embracing a more inclusive, empathetic, and healing approach to life and work.Support the showDid you have any lightbulb moments while listening? As we explore the intricate dance between parents, caregivers, and their children, the presence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can profoundly influence this delicate balance. Parents with ADHD may find solace in shared struggles with their ADHD children, while facing frustration when their symptoms lead to setbacks with neurotypical children. On the other hand, parents without ADHD may struggle to understand the challenges their ADHD child faces, leading to a cycle of punishment and emotional wounds that linger into adulthood. In families with both ADHD and neurotypical children, the specter of favoritism can breed resentment and anger. The neurotypical child may feel neglected, while the child with ADHD may feel unfairly targeted. At the heart of this discord lies a breakdown in communication.Effective communication requires active listening and the recognition of non-verbal cues. Those with ADHD may struggle to articulate their needs and emotions, while those without ADHD may find it challenging to grasp the complexities of the condition. Rebuilding these bridges is no small feat, but progress is possible when all family members are committed to fostering healthier, more open dialogue. The journey towards better communication begins with introspection and asking tough questions about one's own actions, behaviors, and communication style. In times of struggle, seeking the guidance of a trained professional can provide invaluable support.Ultimately, the path to stronger family relationships lies in focusing on personal growth, communication, and understanding. By embracing empathy and compassion, families can begin to mend the invisible tightrope that binds them together.Links & NotesThe Explosive Child by Ross GreenThe ADHD Podcast Ep 358: Mindful Listening for ADHD with Rebecca ShafirThe ADHD Podcast Episodes with Tamara RosierDig into the podcast Shownotes Database (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (06:37) - Parents & Kids with ADHD (15:06) - The Complicated Family Dynamic (29:35) - Emergent Behavior ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

As per his recommendations, commuters can incorporate mindfulness into their driving routine by focusing on breath work, practicing gratitude, preparing ahead, leaving early, disconnecting from digital distractions, being present, listening mindfully, and setting positive intentions for the day. The ultimate goal of these mindful practices is to transform a potentially stressful commute into a positive and reflective point of the day that frames the entire workday in a favorable light.Recommendation: Big Brains Podcast How your brain benefits from music, with Larry Sherman00:04 Introduction to Mindful Commuting00:41 Why Practice Mindfulness During Commute?01:14 Preparation Tips for a Less Stressful Commute02:32 Disconnecting and Being Present03:40 Breathing and Gratitude Practices04:57 Mindful Listening and Music05:47 Dealing with Stress and Setting Intentions06:25 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Get full access to Scott Winterroth's Substack at themiraclecommute.substack.com/subscribe

In this captivating episode, Howard Glasser shares his incredible journey to recognizing the potential greatness in every child and how nurturing their intensity can lead to empowerment and transformation. Trained as a child pychologist, the methods he first used worsened the family relationships. Remembering how he himself was a difficult child, he used his memory of his own needs to reconstruct what children are craving from adults, which is often in direct contrast to how parents and teachers usually behave. He asserts that intense and challenging behavior in children is a sign of their potential greatness and should not be suppressed or medicated. Instead redirected and seen for the fuel that it is. Howard's unique approach "nurtured heart approach." is being studied by four universities and has been adopted by school districts across the country and around the world. We discuss the implications this approach has on our speaking confidence. Click here to check the full show notes

For many people – particularly leaders and other high achievers – facing the unknown can feel very uncomfortable. We tend to prefer certainty, control, and having a clear idea of where we are going. However, simply sitting with the unknown and allowing ourselves to listen with an open mind and trust the process can be a powerful way to unlock new insights and create deeper connections with others. Hakomi, which refers to a Hopi word meaning “how I stand in relationship to these many realms,” is a therapeutic modality that emphasizes the value of mindfulness, listening, and becoming comfortable with the unknown. As the president and cofounder of Possibilities Consulting LLC, as well as a graduate of a two-year Hakomi training, Michelle Saul excels at guiding leaders through change initiatives, often by incorporating Hakomi techniques. In Episode 118 of The MINDSet Game® podcast, Michelle discusses the following: The key principles of Hakomi and how it works in practice How Hakomi may be able to help you achieve healing, shift your mindset, and create lasting positive changes in your life Why listening to others with the intention of truly understanding them is so important – particularly for leaders – as well as specific steps to follow in order to be a more effective listener To learn more about Michelle and Possibilities Consulting LLC, visit https://www.possible.co. When we think of listening to someone or something, we often approach it in a fairly practical way. There is sound and there is someone there to listen to it. Easy enough right? Yes and no. At the most fundamental level we acknowledge how important it is to be able to hear, but what if the act of listening is something different? For example, when we are sitting with a friend and engaged in conversation, do we listen to their words or do we hear them? How we answer this will largely depend on how present, aware and receptive we are to not only the world outside, but to ourselves. Mindful listening starts with you. Of course, this doesn't mean to just sit and listen to the ongoing narrative we have going on in our mind at all times. Mindful listening is something different. Mindful listening involves using silence, space and the presence of our environment as away ground the ego and illuminate the spirit within. When we can practice listening to the subtle vibrations of our own awareness, and stay within that feeling, we eventually discover our own ability to observe the innocence and beauty in everything without the ego's typical habit of narrating our experience. When we can stop the chatter and unlock the heart, then we can begin listening to others in a way that is loving, receptive and most of all compassionate. Let's talk about the art of listening! Mindful listening requires more than just the desire to listen. Often we use the words hearing and listening interchangeably, yet they have completely different meanings. In this episode you will learn about the different styles of listening and how to identify your listening style. In addition, we will discuss common barriers to listening and poor listening habits we engage in unconsciously.
"When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen." ~ Ernest Hemingway Isn't that the truth? I know I am guilty of not being present, multi-tasking, and giving 50% of my attention to things sometimes. The problem with that is you lose 50% of what could be important and inspiring information! In today's episode, I share my own story of moving from an interrupter and "adviser" to someone who continues to work on being a mindful listener and space holder for clients, friends, and colleagues. Highlights of today's episode: Why being empathic and kind by offering up advice can actually diminish someone's confidence. The best thing to do once someone pauses while talking. A great question to ask instead of offering advice. I love that you spend time with me each week!
