“Bicycle Thieves” also known as “Bicycle Thief” 1948 is an Italian drama that presents a Rome family struggling with unemployment, poverty, and the aftermath of World War II. Director Vittorio De Sica captures this subsistence life with exceptional use of black and white cinematography, melancholy music, on location street scenes, untrained actors, and devastating events. The movie won an Academy Award (Special Award) as did Mr. De Sica's 1946 film “Shoeshine”.Lamberto Maggiorani plays Antonio Ricci who is hired to hang outdoor wall posters in an assigned area, and he must have a bicycle for the work. Antonio's supportive and strong-willed wife Maria is played by Lianella Carell. Enzo Staiola is masterful as Bruno, Antonio's 8-year-old son. The large supportive cast enhances this drama of everyday life. This film is unforgettable.

The search is on to find new ways to document the lives of the homeless – nowhere is this more true than in America, with increasing numbers of people sleeping rough. Sue Mitchell talks to filmmaker, Leonard Manzella, who has risen to the challenge with his award-winning film, Shoeshine Caddie. The film follows a year in the life of 61-year-old African American, Adrian Spears. He certainly stands out in the sleepy Californian town where he makes a living shining shoes: dancing around with his bowler hat, starched shirt and bright red uniform. The film opens as he folds up the cardboard sheets he sleeps on at night and makes his way to the storage unit where he keeps clothes and an iron. Everything he owns is immaculately pressed, and it was partly his quiet dignity which drew Leonard to Adrian, and which resonates throughout the movie.Leonard had thought his days in the movies business were over: he gave up his Hollywood career 30 years ago to retrain as a family therapist and through Adrian's story he has reclaimed his passion. The BBC Producer, Sue Mitchell, came across Leonard's film whilst recording with a homeless man living just a few miles away. She was intrigued and began exploring the background to the film and examining why it was proving so popular with audiences.

EPISODE 155 I previously did another blog post and podcast about some of the philosophies of the legendary football coach of the Green Bay Packers in the 1960's, Vice Lombardi. There is a series entitled “A Football Life” on the NFL network on cable television. In part one, in an episode entitled “Lombardi Saves the Franchise” there is an interview with the NFL Hall of Fame football player, Jerry Kramer. Jerry Kramer played the guard position on offensive line for the Green Bay Packers teams in the 1960's. Jerry was sharing on the show how when he was being yelled at by Coach Lombardi for doing something incorrectly in practice or a game he would frequently be “checking his shoeshine.” In other words, Jerry had has head down and was looking at his feet because he was feeling discouraged,. He had lost his confidence and enthusiasm because he was being yelled at so often.  He was being yelled at so often, he was sure he was going to be cut from the team and was wondering what he was going to do with the rest of his life. I have a friend Kimo Mahikoa, from Kauai, Hawaii. Kimo told me one time during a class I was taking on Kauai that if you are feeling down for any reason, you will always start to feel better if you “check your sunshine.” When you are feeling discouraged, ask yourself are you “checking your sunshine or your shoeshine?” Stephen Lesavich, PhD How do you check your sunshine instead of your shoeshine? Checking your sunshine instead of your shoeshine allows you to create a positive impact in your life and the life of others. Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

About six months ago, I did a pod on Goodfellas, Martin Scorsese's 1990 magnum opus on the wise guys of New York, which to me was sweeping, magnetic and a triumph. And as I said then, it's a young man's film --- it had all the adrenaline, obstinance, the hubris, and the self-belief that young men often possess. A lot of water under that bridge since 1990, with Scorsese directing a slew of incredible films to follow: the remake of Cape Fear, a huge change of pace in The Age Of Innocence, back to wise guys with Casino, Gangs Of New York for a take on the Protestant-Catholic and Nativist battles of the 1860s, The Aviator, a terrific film on Howard Hughes that didn't get its due, then winning the Best Director Oscar in 2006 for The Departed. You've heard me rant about that late, late recognition before, so I'll let it lie. Then through the latter part of the 2010s with amazing films like Hugo, The Wolf Of Wall Street and Silence. Where am I going with this laundry list? Here, you have the protagonist, but where's the antagonist, huh? Where's the drama?  Like De Sica and his Italian Neorealism series of Shoeshine, Bicycle Thieves, and Umberto D, tracing the ages of man in post-WWII Rome, you can conveniently stick a square peg in a square hole and assert that Scorsese is following a similar arc with his gang and wise guy films. Early work with young, promising actors in Mean Streets, followed by the crazy adults of Goodfellas, middle-aged and calculating in Casino. And what's at the end of the arc? The wise guys in old age, looking back. What we find is the film, The Irishman. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

In today's episode, we bring you a conversation with Amir Naderi, writer and director of THE RUNNER, one of the most revered figures of the Iranian New Wave, and Madjid Niroumand, who was 11 when he played the film's central role nearly 40 years ago. The two joined Film Forum's repertory artistic director Bruce Goldstein for a discussion following our opening night screening of a new restoration of THE RUNNER on October 28. Released in Iran in 1984, THE RUNNER wasn't seen in New York until 1991,  when it premiered at Film Forum – and then virtually disappeared. The film, based on Naderi's own childhood, centers on a resourceful orphan making ends meet in Abadan, a southern city on the Persian Gulf.  Considered the first masterpiece of post-revolutionary Iran, THE RUNNER has been compared to the great works of Italian neo-realism, like SHOESHINE and THE BICYCLE THIEF, and Truffaut's THE 400 BLOWS. The new restoration is now playing at Film Forum through Thursday, November 17. Special thanks to Amir Naderi, Madjid Niroumand, and Rialto Pictures for making this event possible. Have you ever asked yourself, “How can I be used by God?” Dr. Ed Gomes, Director of Spiritual Development for the Liberty Flames Football team, brought home a message at our Roanoke Tailgate that helps answer that question.     Good news! God desires to use us. He has something He wants to do that only you and I can do.    “Let God take our story, make it his story, so that we can help somebody else with their story.”   First, Dr. Gomes addresses how a misunderstanding of who I am in Christ and an inability to think correctly about God, myself, and others can hold us back. “If we focus on the past we never focus on Jesus.”    Next, he points out two character qualities in Joseph that demonstrate how God has you where you need to be. But we must pay attention to what's happening around us and live right, or we will miss an opportunity to communicate truth to someone.    “Jesus always paid attention to what was happening around him.”   It's about looking for normal, natural ways to build a relationship, present the Gospel, and speak truth into their life. By building a relationship, we earn the right to speak into others' lives. Dr. Gomes is a living example of servant leadership with his Shoeshine ministry.    Resources:    Dr. Ed Gomes | Football | Liberty Flames    Shoe Shine Ministry with Dr. Ed Gomes - YouTube    More on Ed Gomes from Noble Warriors    View Show Notes: NobleWarriors.org/episode65 Leave a Review: If you like what you've been hearing, we invite you to leave us a review. Do you find yourself chasing after your clients, allowing them to push you around or accepting any special request or custom orders even though it will jeopardize your timeline? You want to say NO but compulsively you say YES. For Abraham Heisler, this is the biggest mistake he repeatedly finds among his clients and this is called the ‘Shoe Shine Syndrome' because they are always giving away their power by saying yes when in reality they should be using that moment as a chance for taking back control of what needs done on time. Abraham Heisler, is a Mindset and Performance Coach who helps business professionals reduce stress and increase productivity through leveraging FLOW STATES. Abraham has spent the last 20 years researching the connection between mind, body and business and has helped over 100 entrepreneurs increase their income and impact by accessing more of their potential. Influences on Abraham's work include ontological coaching, neuro-linguistic programming, gestalt therapy, group facilitation, co-active coaching, and 15 years as an award-winning filmmaker. One of the most powerful tools Abraham uses with clients is breathwork - an active breathing technique that wipes away fear and anxiety while cultivating a sense of certainty. This phenomenon, which works with your own biology is called transient hypofrontality. In this episode: - Biggest Mental Blocks or mistakes  that Abraham finds not only from new entrepreneurs but also from successful ones. - What is the solution or process to address these deep psychological issues? (...What is the Reverse Copernican Shift?)  - What does a deep work process look like and what are some of the tools being used?  - What is the first step a person must take when he is into the Shoe Shine Syndrome? Welcome to the first episode of the Trading Secrets podcast. I'm your host Roger Magalhaes, and for today's episode I want to introduce myself, let you know  what this podcast is about, and why I decided to create this show.Originally, I am from Brazil, but now I am based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. I believe I was born an entrepreneur. When I was little, I would pull my shoe shine box around the neighborhood asking everyone I saw if they needed their shoes shined. I attended vocational school at 14, learned a profession, and would work and attend school at the same time. When I was 19, I went back to vocational school and learned robotics. My first job in the USA was washing cars, but I immediately knew it wasn't enough for me.After some training and searching, I was able to become a truck driver, which eventually led to becoming a vacation driver. That meant more money, but it also meant being on call 24/7. Four years later, I bought my house and renovated it by myself. Once the remodeling was finished, I realized I missed working with my hands. My cousin worked as a subcontractor installing window  coverings, so I shadowed him for one day and knew it was for me.Now, after working hard and learning everything I could, I own my own business, I'm a columnist for Window Fashion Vision Magazine, I am the installation instructor for the fast-track program at WFCP, and a board member of the WCAA. In September of last year, I started my second company: Trading Up Consulting. I hope that through this podcast I can raise awareness of my trade, educate newcomers, and build a strong community.Listen to the full episode hereReview this episode here https://lovethepodcast.com/tradingsecretspodcastContact me here: podcast@tradingupconsulting.comFind out more about Trading Up Consulting here: https://www.tradingupconsulting.com/
