If you want to go out and become an expert in salsa dancing, you will most likely be confronted with a fait amount of painful heteronormativity. Danyèla decided to not march in time to this tired beat. Instead she stubbornly kept correcting her dance teachers, and thus changed the language around salsa. From men and women to leaders and followers. For the first time since the beginning of the show someone from France has found her way on the podcast. Now she has a professional career as an artist and she's making quite a name for herself. Just like Ford, Danner proves that sometimes things take time. Danner started her career in the 90's, when Alanis Morissette, Tracy Chapman and other women making rock music were topping the charts. Her ambition to play in the same circles as these other women didn't quite come true, but considering the transphobic brand of feminism that was common at the time that might just be a good thing. Today's guest Bahiru explains how there are several languages in Ethiopia, so there's a lot of work yet to be done when it comes to finding the right vocabulary to describe all different queer identities. Zēga is not the only way to pick queer people from a crowd. Amharic, one of the Ethiopian languages, has a formal form. The trick is to only use the formal form with queer people. After she came out it was a challenge to overcome these family focussed expectations. School was not really a problem though. She turned out to be a real Diva in academia. Thankfully, she had pop music to cope. Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, and all the artists played in this episode help her feel empowered. While editing this show I noticed again how hesitant Paulina was talking about her queer experience. Of course, not everyone is as vocal about their own queerness. But then I noticed how much the conversation fired up when talking about race. In hindsight, I think some questions were left unanswered about whether she feels the need to choose between her queer identity or her Asian identity. I guess there’s a time and place for all those unanswered questions too. Without reading into it too much, there might be parallels with her musical preferences. When she lived in a white environment she had to deal with some nasty remarks. Both because she’s Asian and because she listens to hip-hop. Worapon explains how easy it is to let go of the names your parents gave you. Then there are names we probably should let go. Artists who appropriate cultures trying to appealing to a global audience should see that backfire. I did consider to skip the Hwasa track for this exact reason. The reasons I played it anyway are simple: I'm spineless and didn't dare to ask Worapon to pick a different track last-minute. Besides, my cultural impact with this podcast is so minimal, it's not like i'm promoting anyone here. At least I hope that's true. If not, please drag me through the mud as well. CW: suicide, violence, genocide, abuse Dumi and the African Queer Youth Initiative fight for the Pan-African rights of Queer people. Because even though a lot of progress have been made in the past, there is still a long way to go. Unfortunately, the show did not end the way we'd hoped. It's been a challenge to get this recording going on, but not everything always goes as planned. In this case, the internet connection on Dumi's end was not quite cooperative. However, we still had quite a long conversation so here's what we ended up with. CW: Misogyny, Internalised homophobia It took a while for Vera to come to terms with her sexuality but luckily music was there every step of the way. First there were some hints towards her liking girls. For example something that, with the power of hindsight, could be labeled as a crush on Avril Lavigne. A few years later there was a fateful night that showed the power living your truth. Finally, in there here and now, she's using her platform at Dutch Public radio to get more queer artists on air.
