Today's Desk Chair Expert, Maruf, is a PhD candidate in Virginia Tech's Translational Biology, Medicine, and Health program (and yes I did copy that from an article about him). On top of his research, Maruf has served in several leadership positions working to make changes that positively impact graduate student well-being. He is also the only person I know who uses "moreover" in casual conversation.  Maruf shares with us his thoughts on the COVID-19 pandemic as a person who actually understands viruses and vaccines, and we reminisce on the weirdness of early pandemic days. He shares how his path changed from never considering graduate school to, you know, getting a PhD. Then he gives some seriously helpful and honest thoughts on how to evaluate if graduate school is a good option for you. We get into our shared history as "student leaders" and talk about fun times working together as well as what schools can do to better support graduate students and how difficult it can be to actually make these changes happen. Harun Maruf is a reporter and writer at VOA Africa Division with an extensive experience in working in conflict zones. He also covers security, extremism, piracy, human rights, politics and other current affairs issues. He secured the first radio interview with the late American jihadist Omar Hammami. Maruf has also reported on the emergence of pro-Islamic State militants in Somalia; the travels of Somali youth from Minnesota to Syria to fight alongside ISIS and has presented hundreds of original radio documentaries about Al-Shabab, extremism, corruption, piracy, and human rights. In addition, Maruf is the author of hundreds of articles, papers and scholarly works about Somalia and the Horn of Africa and he's frequently invited to speak on these subjects at international events, conferences, round-table discussions and town halls. Prior to VOA, Maruf worked for BBC and Associated Press as a reporter in Somalia, and as a researcher for Human Rights Watch. He holds a Master of Arts in international journalism from the City, University of London. One of the most powerful Islamic militant groups in Africa, Al-Shabaab exerts Taliban-like rule over millions in Somalia and poses a growing threat to stability in the Horn of Africa. Somalis risk retaliation or death if they oppose or fail to comply with Al-Shabaab-imposed restrictions on aspects of everyday life such as clothing, media, sports, interpersonal relations, and prayer. Our superiority is based on what the creator identifies rather than what we define based on our conjectures. Diversity should be a source of strength. Humanity and the pop culture has always portrayed the economically dominant people as the superior race. Ignorance is a key to racism. While Muslims should not have discrimination, we see it at our places of worship as well. In parts of world like India and Pakistan, discrimination is very prevalent just not racial but of other types. As a result, we accept it and then lose the fire for Amar bil Maruf and Nahi Anil Munkir. Humans are created equal with key differences defined by the creator. Only the creator can mark the differences. And these differences are one of the signs of Allah.

Dankzij interwebs kunnen we toch gezamenlijk praten met niet één- maar met twee geweldige gasten: Axmed Maxamed van Dance with Pride, een non profit underground organisatie die grassroots initiatieven ondersteund voor de queer community of color en Dino Suhonic van Maruf, een stichting voor de Islamitische LHBTQI+ gemeenschap. Met Axmed en Dino praten we uitgebreid over hun weg naar een veilig thuis, het verschil voor beiden tussen ‘gay’ en ‘queer’, de kracht van een sterke en activistische gemeenschap en de rol van kolonialisme en post kolonialisme in de acceptatie van ‘queerness’ door de Islam. Een belangrijk gesprek waar Mariam zich al weken op heeft verheugd! Ook hebben we het over het kind of neo-liberale Westerse concept ‘in’ en ‘uit de kast’. Ja je leest het goed, kind of. Wij van Dipsaus houden van taal en houden nog meer van vermenging van verschillende talen (samen spreken we maar liefst 7 talen). Deal er maar mee…Uiteraard hebben we onze bbb en b’s voor jullie en dankzij Axmed toch nog een 5e b in de vorm van een serie big ups!
