Welcome to Season 9! I am thrilled to open with a conversation focused on Prospect Research, featuring Steve Grimes. In our conversation we talk about the important role both researchers and fundraisers play as they work together towards a common goal. Steve reflects on experiences throughout his career and shares how they have shaped his approach today. Steve is the Associate Director of Data Insight at the Helen Brown Group. Most recently he was the Assistant Director of the NYC Mayor's Office of Data Analytics (MODA). Here, he provided guidance and supervision to the Office's data scientists and analytic portfolio. As the City's center for data analytic excellence, he regularly interacted with City leadership, other Mayor's Offices, City agencies, and NYC's data science community. Previously, he was the Director of Development Analytics and Strategy at Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) producing reporting and analysis needs for senior leadership. Before JALC, he joined the ACLU as the Prospect Research Analyst working with the Principal Gifts team in the national office at the beginning of the Trump administration. In a previous life he pursued academia as a doctoral fellow at Rutgers University, focusing his research on labor relations, intimacy, and visual sociology. When the time allowed, he taught various courses on social inequality, social research, and the sociology of emotions. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology from SUNY at Old Westbury, a master's degree in sociology from St. John's University, and a second master's degree in media studies from CUNY at Brooklyn College. He currently sits on the board of the New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, he is director for NEDRA, served as a director of APRAGNY and on various APRA committees, and was co-host of a now defunct podcast on prospect research. He is a fan of video games, nature, and history. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/devdebrief/support

Each year Onondaga Community College recognizes distinguished graduates who have made a difference in their community and professional life, naming them "Alumni Faces" honorees. On the night of Wednesday, October 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the Frederick marvin and Ernst Schuh Recital Hall, we will pay tribute to the Alumni Faces Class of 2021. In the weeks leading up to the event we are proudly profiling our honorees on our website and social media. Today we recognize Lanessa Owens-Chaplin, '03.If there's anyone who is doing exactly what she should be doing in life, it's Lanessa Owens-Chaplin, '03. When she was a student at Onondaga Community College, Owens-Chaplin was working full time at Kentucky Fried Chicken and living on her own in the Pioneer Homes housing project which is located directly next to the elevated portion of Interstate 81. Today she's an attorney and the lead counsel for the New York Civil Liberties Union which is working to make sure the elevated portion of Interstate 81 is replaced with a surface road system known as the community grid.Owens-Chaplin always had big dreams but never knew if she could overcome significant life challenges to make any of them come true. By age 17 she was living on her own while attending Henninger High School. After receiving her diploma she decided to come to OCC and major in Humanities.Initially, learning how to balance the demands of working full-time and going to college was a huge struggle. Coursework took a back seat. As she developed relationships with professors, her education became more important. When she took a Business Law class it gave her the confidence to pursue a career in law. After earning her degree at OCC, Owens-Chaplin committed full-time to education and her future. She quit her job, moved away, and enrolled at SUNY College at Old Westbury. She graduated with honors, then moved on to the School of Law at the University of St. Thomas in Miami. She earned her law degree and returned to Syracuse with the goal of making a difference in the community. The Interstate 81 project is now the main focus of her professional life as lead counsel for the New York Civil Liberties Union. As she continues to advocate for others, she'll return to campus next week to be honored for her community-focused contributions. The Alumni Faces ceremony will be streamed live on OCC's YouTube and Facebook pages Wednesday, October 6 at 5:30 p.m.

Welcome to Episode 74 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. This is our eighth of eight regional preview pods -- this one covers the New York region and its four conferences. Before we begin, we do a brief check-in (at 1:30) on our respective alma maters and discuss why WashU's pitching staff is always so incredible and Wooster's 3-1 start to open the season. Also (at 11:30) another note about Bret Williams' chase for the all-time D-III HR record. Then, it's NY time: SUNYAC (at 14:30) Cortland is Cortland, so obviously they're gonna win a lot of games and have some exciting #Year5 guys returning Oswego State is still the Lakers, so we made more Lakers jokes but they have some key guys back as well and as always, watch out for Brockport! Liberty (at 23:35) Rochester impressed us a lot at the regional in 2019, and now look like the clear favorite in this conference with two strong starters Ithaca joined from the Empire 8 and are traditionally strong but there aren't many familiar faces on the roster so tough to know what to expect Other teams like Union, Clarkson, RIT are usually relevant in this conference race Empire 8 (or uh, the Empire 5? 6?) (at 34:00) St. John Fisher looks loaded, is already off to a hot start, and now they're in a barren wasteland of a conference...should be interesting! Skyline (at 37:40) Farmingdale State is always a rock solid bet to lead the Skyline pack but we've seen teams like like Manhattanville, St. Joseph's (Long Island) and Old Westbury in the mix CUNYAC doesn't appear to be playing but maybe we're wrong? No auto-bid, though. UAA (at 43:40) NYU doesn't seem likely to be playing this spring but let us know if that's not true! We concluded (at 45:30) with our player and pitcher of the year picks for the region, and our teams to beat. Then we say goodbye. Thanks for listening! It will be a great embarrassment to the USA.” The Commerce Department today reported that Gross Domestic Product shrank by 9.5 percent in the second quarter of the year, and at an annualized rate of 32.9 percent, easily a record in the history of the country. President Trump yesterday threatened to send federal agents to cities all around America, ostensibly to protect federal buildings. On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker is joined by Dr. Gerald Horne, a professor of history at the University of Houston and the author of many books, including “The Counterrevolution of 1776: Slave Resistance and the Origins of the United States of America.”The successful 1776 revolt against British rule in North America has been hailed almost universally as a great step forward for humanity. But the Africans then living in the colonies overwhelmingly sided with the British. Gerald Horne argues that in the prelude to 1776, the abolition of slavery seemed all but inevitable in London, delighting Africans as much as it outraged slaveholders, and sparking the colonial revolt. The so-called Revolutionary War was in part a counter-revolution, a conservative movement that the founding fathers fought in order to preserve their right to enslave others. Abby Martin and Mike Prysner have filmed a new documentary titled “Afghanistan War Exposed: An Imperial Conspiracy”, that shows the totality of the US conflict in Afghanistan, from CIA covert action in the 1980s until today. They argue that the occupation of Afghanistan has become so normalized and mostly serves as background noise to Americans. It’s even referred to as the “Forever War,” accepted as just a constant reality. Mike Prysner, the documentary’s producer, and the co-host of the podcast Eyes Left, a military podcast hosted by two anti-war Army veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, joins the show. Thursday’s weekly series “Criminal Injustice” is about the most egregious conduct of our courts and prosecutors and how justice is denied to so many people in this country. Paul Wright, the founder and executive director of the Human Rights Defense Center and editor of Prison Legal News (PLN), and Kevin Gosztola, a writer for Shadowproof.com and co-host of the podcast Unauthorized Disclosure, join the show.A regular Thursday segment deals with the ongoing militarization of space. As the US continues to withdraw from international arms treaties, will the weaponization and militarization of space bring the world closer to catastrophe? John speaks with Prof. Karl Grossman, a full professor of journalism at the State University of New York, College at Old Westbury and the host of a nationally aired television program focused on environmental, energy, and space issues. It’s Friday! So it’s time for the week’s worst and most misleading headlines. Brian and John speak with Steve Patt, an independent journalist whose critiques of the mainstream media have been a feature of his site Left I on the News and on twitter @leftiblog, and Sputnik producer Nicole Roussell.

Welcome to Episode 62 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. This is our seventh of eight regional preview pods -- this one covers the New York region and its four conferences. Topics include: SUNYAC Cortland (at 1:15) is Cortland, so obviously they're gonna win a lot of games and play a ludicrous schedule Oswego State (at 6:05) is still the Lakers, so we made more Lakers jokes (but also they are legit and we should stop sleeping on them) Liberty Rochester (at 9:35) impressed us a lot at the regional last year, and now look like the favorite to repeat Ithaca (at 14:30) is joining this conference from the Empire 8 but have a ton to replace after a huge graduating class Other teams (at 17:25) like Union, Clarkson, RIT are usually relevant in this conference race Empire 8 (or uh, the Empire 4?) St. John Fisher (at 20:00) might have the most all-region talent returning of any team in the country, but now they're in a barren wasteland of a conference...should be interesting! Skyline Farmingdale State (at 23:00) is always a rock solid bet to lead the Skyline pack Other teams (at 27:00) like Manhattanville, St. Joseph's (Long Island) and Old Westbury could be in the mix CUNYAC (at 29:40) doesn't have its own auto-bid but maybe they'll win the weird split one with the NAC again! UAA NYU (at 30:40) is finally playing a more respectable schedule, but will it be enough to put them in the Pool B conversation? We concluded (at 33:20) with a few other notable player shout outs, our player and pitcher of the year picks for the region, and our teams to beat. Then we say goodbye. Thanks for listening!
