After transcribing the episode into the Plurawl app, the emotional word that summarized the journal entry was...exhilarated. Exhilarated = A feeling of excitement, happiness, or elation. Often experienced during moments of high energy and reflecting an optimistic state. On the episode, Pabel is embracing changes in podcasting and content creation strategy. These updates are bringing him a sense of liberation...despite a few uncertainties about the public reception and social media algorithm influences. During the episode, Pabel reflects on the role that authenticity plays in the creative process, especially as a Tech Founder/ CEO. Although there is a desire to be vulnerable and push the boundaries of professionalism, it doesn't mean that there isn't any self-doubt or worry about being the representation...that he desperately wants to see in the world. I've been hesitant to talk about the specific features of the Plurawl app that we're launching in May. I fear that a big tech company will see the product and steal my idea...and this whole startup life is over. How likely is it that it happens though? No one truly knows, because it's impossible to predict the future. That said, we all swear that we can because we make up these stories in our heads every day. The funny part about it...is that they are rarely positive stories that we tell ourselves. Why don't I tell myself a story that involves me talking about what we're building...the post goes viral...and millions of people sign up for the App Launch Waitlist? The dilemma is that I fear talking about it because someone may steal my idea, but if I don't talk about it...then there wouldn't even be users for the product. Sign Up for the App Launch waitlist; on schedule to launch in May 2024. ------ This week's been a rollercoaster. Caught myself getting judgmental after an anxiety nap, questioning the realness of my feelings. It's been hard, honestly feeling a bit emotional and just craving a hug from my Abuela. Despite trying to stick to my ideal morning routine—waking up early, hydrating, journaling, hitting the gym—I've been thrown off, especially when my schedule doesn't go as planned. Ironically, marking my three-year anniversary out of corporate life made me reflect on the importance of routine for my mental health. Yet, I've struggled with self-doubt, especially on days I felt unproductive. A successful speaking engagement gave me a moment of validation, reminding me why I do what I do, despite the internal battles with imposter syndrome. I've realized it's crucial to celebrate the wins, no matter how small, and change the narrative I tell myself. Taking care of my mental health is essential, not a sign of weakness. It's about being kind to ourselves, recognizing our accomplishments, and understanding our worth isn't tied to productivity. Pabel Martinez is a native New Yorker, storyteller, and former tech executive. Throughout his career, Pabel was trained to believe that many parts of his identity were unprofessional. Pabel would dedicate days out of the week to study "white popular American culture" and memorizing scripts he would later use for work conversations. He knew that talking about Bad Bunny and shows like Insecure, would not make him relatable. Instead, he would binge-watch seasons of Riverdale since it would help him build relationships with colleagues and senior leaders. The assimilation became overwhelming, and it was at the expense of his identity & mental health. As a result, Pabel's mission in life became redefining professionalism by empowering authenticity. In 2020, he launched Plurawl to bring this mission to life. In this week's episode, Pabel opens up about his recent feelings through a video journal entry. He talks about how he feels both proud of his friends for their achievements and also jealous because he would love to have the same opportunities. These conflicting feelings can be damaging to his relationships and to himself, so in this episode, he discusses how he supports his friends and their accomplishments while also holding space for his own negative feelings.  A heads up - paid subscribers of the podcast will have access to more of these personal video journal entries in 2024!  Follow Pabel on: Website: https://plurawl.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/plurawl/  TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@plurawl  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pabelmartinez/  To book a speaking engagement email hola@plurawl.com Podcast production for this episode was provided by CCST. In Episode 111, Pabel Martinez, Founder and CEO of Plurawl, joins Melinda in a discussion on redefining professionalism so people can bring their authentic selves to the workplace. They explore how biases around professionalism move individuals to mask their identities and “code-switch”' to assimilate into another culture. They look into the difference between uncomfortable and unprofessional and how we can mitigate the impact of biases around professionalism. They also discuss how managers can promote authenticity at work by building trust in teams and leading honest conversations. About Pabel Martinez (he/him)Pabel Martinez is a native New Yorker, storyteller, and former Tech executive.Throughout his career, Pabel struggled balancing two jobs…Tech Employee and Actor. As an Actor, he would focus on assimilation because he was trained to believe that many parts of his identity were unprofessional.Pabel would dedicate days out of the week to study “white popular American culture” and memorize scripts he would later use for work conversations. In 2020, he launched Plurawl to bring this mission to life.Find Leading With Empathy & Allyship useful? The Six Biggest, Most Surprising or Useful Lessons our Hosts Identified in 20221. The host defines the brand of your show.2. Hosting changes the host—not just as a storyteller and performer, but as a human being. 3. Great performances are valuable, whether that's a million-dollar signature story in a keynote speech or the captivating storytelling and connection skills of a great host.  4. We must challenge unconscious bias about the kinds of voices that are perceived as acceptable. 5. Narrative isn't simply important, it's the way we experience the world, define our identities, and make meaning. Sharing stories builds empathy. When we revise our own stories, we change our lives. 6. To stand out from the competition, we need to constantly think of how to be "better than good," as Jay Baer puts it. BONUS: Podcasting is a team sport—not simply because of the variety of skills and tasks involved in producing a great show, but because collaboration with colleagues who make you feel safe enables courageous, vulnerable creativity. We will almost always do better work in collaboration than we will completely alone. The episode(s) discussed on today's Sound Judgment:The Host Defines the Brand with John Barth, Sound Judgment Ep. 2A Host on a Mission with Quien tu Eres host Pabel Martinez, Sound Judgment Ep. 6Finding Your Voice with Shelter in Place Host Laura Joyce Davis, Sound Judgment Ep. 5A "Yes, And" Approach to Cohosting with Pantsuit Politics, Sound Judgment Ep. 3Cinematic Storytelling with Crime Show's Emma Courtland, Sound Judgment Ep. 4The podcast Standing Ovation with host Jay Baer: A sneak peek of a Season 2 Sound Judgment episode The podcast Snap Judgment with host Glynn Washington: A sneak peek of Season 2, Episode 1, coming January 12, 2023Sound Judgment Ep. 1, “Emotional Bravery on Last Day with Stephanie Wittels Wachs”Subscribe to Sound Judgment, the Newsletter, our once- or twice-monthly newsletter about creative choices in audio storytelling.Captivate Your Listeners, Improve Your Hostiness and Grow Your Show in 2023!What's it like for you to face the blank page of your script – or that "blank tape" on the mic? ¿Quién Tú Eres?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 1, 2022 38:28

This week's episode is featuring an interview that our host Pabel Martinez had on the Sound Judgement podcast. Sound Judgment has become a quest to identify the universal qualities and skills of "hostiness." If I'm on a quest, Pabel Martinez is on a mission—in his case, to redefine professionalism and to empower members of Latinx community to be their authentic selves 100% of the time. He's sharing stories of Latinx professionals who are tired of playing the assimilation game in corporate America. Like him, they are rebelling against it, after lifetimes of pretending to be other than who they actually are. And we discover a new hostiness quality: That who we are as human beings has everything to do with how we show up on the mic, and whether—or not—we connect to our audiences. Takeaways from Pabel Martinez, host of ¿Quién Tú Eres? Interrupting is often helpful and we need to learn how to do it deftly. Interrupting is cultural – it's governed by what we consider polite, which is different everywhere. My husband, from Ohio where everyone is awfully nice, used to be horrified by what I see as my enthusiasm, which means I interrupt far more often than he does. I grew up in Boston and, later, New York. The skill of interrupting may seem pretty small, inconsequential, even, but it's not – it's about being a host who can create a good flow to a conversation, and stay in control of it so you can serve your listeners. Is there an injustice you see, one that isn't being addressed? You can use a podcast to fill that need, both by having the courage to share your own difficult story, and by encouraging guests to share their untold stories on your show. Representation matters. We know this, but Pabel is showing it. Listeners tell Pabel that because of ¿Quién Tú Eres?, they no longer feel alone. And that gives them strength to make changes they didn't have the courage to do before. That response says a lot about the connection a host on a mission can create with their audience. Could you help your audience know they're not alone? While I believe there are universal qualities and skills to hostiness – I'm on that quest to uncover them – I also believe there is no single definition of a “great” or “best” host. Because, like my mother used to always say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That said, we can certainly know when a host is beloved. Not everyone will love you. But your ideal audience will, if: you understand who you're talking to. Are you serving that person? Do you know what they need to hear, and are you willing to go there? Pabel admitted that it's hard for him to share episodes like the one he did about his salary, and the one he did about quitting his job at TikTok – but that they were among the most popular of all of his episodes. So get to know your ideal listeners very well. Care for them. Let your work speak to them. And, depending on your goals, speak out FOR them. Who we are as a human has everything to with who we are on the mic. And what I realized is that who we are as human beings has everything to do with who we are on the mic.If we are courageous, it shows. If we know who our listeners are and love them, it shows. If we are ashamed of something in our lives and that holds us back from expressing our full selves as hosts, it shows. If we are making our podcast (or giving our speech or writing our story) solely to support our business and make money – purely for our own ends – it shows. It doesn't matter if we're actually sharing personal stories or not: listeners hear and respond to our character in our voices, regardless of the format. So Pabel's question — Quién Tú Eres? — applies to all of us. Before you turn on the mic, spend some time with his question. Who are you? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/quientueres/support

Mi Gente! I had the amazing opportunity to chat with Pabel Martinez, founder & CEO of Plurawl, Host of the 'Quien tu Eres?' podcast and Global Account Director at TikTok. We talked about the importance of redefining professionalism, specially at the workplace. A lot of us feel that we need to leave our authentic selves on a shelf in order to fit in or to be accepted at work, one of the reasons we might feel disconnected and tired. We are in 2022, and we think is time to redefine what it actually means to be professional without jeopardizing our authenticity. Pabel's superpower is uncovering the story behind the numbers; translating data to stories. He's been able to flex this skill at various technology companies such as Facebook (previous employer) and TikTok (current employer). Although he's been successful, he has met challenges along the way. He experienced imposter's syndrome, micro-aggressions, and racism. He would often REPRESS parts of his identity inside & outside of work in an effort to feel more included and less judged. He isn't alone. "According to a new study published by the Center for Talent Innovation, Latinos at Work: Unleashing the Power of Culture, most Latinos in the U.S. do not feel that they can bring their whole selves to the office. The study found the vast majority of Latinos (76%) repress parts of their personas at work.” Please follow Pabel at: IG: @plurawl website: www.plurawl.com Podcast:¿ Quien tu eres? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chismethatmatterspodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chismethatmatterspodcast/support

In this episode, Pabel Martinez (host of this podcast), opens up about his viral LinkedIn post about Latina Equal Pay day. Pabel shares 3 lessons that he learned and challenges the audience to do some self reflection around our relationship with money and salary transparency. Find him on LinkedIn with this link and find his viral post by clicking this link. Below, we've included an excerpt from his post. How many people know how much money you make? Up until this post...only my accountant knew...and that's because he does my taxes. Not even my Mom was privy to this information! I haven't shared this information with my family, girlfriend, or friends. Like many others, I've been trained (at work & home) to believe that this information should NEVER be shared. 1) Work: We are often encouraged to not share our job level as well as our compensation packages. Sharing this information would likely force companies to pay equal wages (across the same roles & levels). This behavior doesn't help individuals though. Employees are often lowballed and accept for offers well below what their counterparts were offered. 2) Home: I was told that it will create jealousy, envy, among other emotions. I was warned people will aim to take advantage of my situation. These situations are real and happen often. That said, I'm ready for the pocket watchers. With #LatinaEqualPayDay being last week, I couldn't help to think about how this secrecy impacts the discrepancy in wages. Imagine the power of going into salary negotiations for a role...and you already know how much someone on that team makes. Transparency is how I'm helping to close the gap.
