The arrival of Julia Álvarez on "Hablemos escritoras" is a tribute to the pioneers who carved a space for literature by Hispanic-origin writers in the United States. In 2014, President Obama awarded her the National Medal of Arts. She has been named Woman of the Year by Latina Magazine. Her books How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (A Plume Book, 1991) and In the Time of the Butterflies (Taller, 1994) are some of the most important works in the literature of this genre. Born in New York, her heritage is also Dominican, to which she pays tribute in her work. We celebrate with a conversation with Liliana Valenzuela her long trajectory and her book El cementerio de los cuentos sin contar (Harper Collins, 2024), translated by Mercedes Guhl. We are indebted to Viviana Castiblanco for her arrival at our project.

Aurora was 35, married with 4 young kids under the age of 7 when the doctors diagnosed her vision issue as optic neuritis related to Multiple Sclerosis (MS). They said her sight would never return, and based on the location of 10 lesions on her brain, the incurable, progressive disease would confine her to a wheelchair within five years. Aurora was devastated but soon found herself on a journey with God and forever changed. In this episode Aurora shares: The first signs and the shock of seeing 10 lesions on her MRI Getting the news from top local physicians The turning point from fear and hopelessness to faith in Go God leading her on a journey to healing through promptings and people An impactful moment from her past would lead her to set the goal of one triathlon (while she still had function) Seeing results from holistic and functional medicine providers that she didn't know were possible The joy of receiving the call that her MS lesions completely disappeared Finding a new love of a sport and completing over 51 triathlons(!) Her passion as a triathlete becomes a platform where she could minister to others "I have come that they might have life, and have it in abundance." -John 10:10 More about Aurora: Through God's guidance, Aurora dove into functional medicine and healing the root cause of where her symptoms were coming from. She has never been on medications for MS, she uses food as her medicine and lifestyle changes have saved her life from one with MS. She healed her body from MS and is healthier now than she was before her diagnosis. After the first year of her lifestyle changes, her vision came back better than before, after being blind for over a month and she became physically active for the first time. She has been racing triathlons for 10 years, has been a sponsored triathlete and has raced over 51 triathlons including Half Ironman distances. Her story has been featured in Shape Magazine, Latina Magazine, Fox News, ABC LA and various TV Shows. She is a graduate of the Institute for Functional Medicine Coaching program, a coach, writer and speaker, and is passionate about sharing her story to give others inspiration and hope and teach them how the body can heal through diet and lifestyle changes. She is currently working in real estate with her husband in California. Disclaimer: While I make every effort to broadcast accurate information (both medical and Biblical), I am still learning. Medicine (holistic and traditional) is a constantly changing science and art. I recommend prayer as well as consulting with multiple physicians when faced with a health crisis. Today on this very special episode of the Author Pep Talks podcast I'm actually interviewing two guests instead of just one. My first guest is Crystal Maldonado, the author of the Young Adult romance, Fat Chance Charlie Vega. Crystal Maldonado is a young adult author with a lot of feelings. Her work has been published in the Hartford Courant, Buzzfeed, and Latina Magazine. By day, she is a social media manager working in higher ed, and by night, a writer who loves Beyoncé, shopping, spending too much time on her phone, and being extra. She lives in western Massachusetts with her husband, daughter, and dog. Next up is Olivia Abtahi, author of the Young Adult novel, Perfectly Parvin. Olivia Abtahi is a film director and writer based in Denver, Colorado. Born to an Iranian father and an Argentine mother, she is a melting pot of distinct cultures. Growing up in the DC area, Olivia always had a passion for cinema and storytelling. She is a graduate of NYU Film School and VCU Brandcenter, and has lived in New York, San Francisco, Richmond Virginia, and Dublin, Ireland. She holds a BFA and MaSC. Today, we're talking about the absolutely monumental feat that is parenting during the pandemic, the intense stress of debuting, also during a pandemic, and making time for your creative practice when you're being pulled in a million different directions. I enjoyed every second of our conversation and loved the back and forth between these two fierce Mamas. I am so in awe of their strength, candidness, and sense of humor, and I hope you come away from this conversation feeling as liberated as I did. They often say you shouldn't meet people you admire because they may disappoint you. After over a decade of following slam poet, thespian, and organizer Mayda Del Valle's career and creative works, I have to say I was not disappointed. Despite being nervous to meet this Def Poetry Jam star, Mayda has a way of disarming you with her charm and contagious laughter. We spoke about her iconic poem, "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" which can be seen here, which is one of my favorite pieces from Mayda. We discussed her upbringing in Chicago, how hip-hop influenced her life, and the role that community organizing played in making her the storyteller that she is. Guest Bio: Poet and performer Mayda Del Valle has been described by the Chicago Sun Times as having “a way with words. Sometimes they seem to flutter and roll off her lips. Other times they burst forth like a comet streaking across a nighttime sky.” Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago. She is the author of A South Side Girl's Guide to Love and Sex , The University of Hip Hop and was a winner of the 2016 Drinking Gourd Chapbook Poetry Prize from Northwestern University Press. She appeared on six episodes of the HBO series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry, and was a contributing writer and original cast member of the Tony Award winning Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. She began her artistic career at the Nuyorican Poets Café, where she was the 2001 Grand Slam Champion, and went on to become the National Poetry Slam Champion in the same year. She was the youngest poet, and the first Latinx person to do so. She has appeared in Urban Latino, Latina Magazine, Mass Appeal, The Source, The New York Times and was named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of America's Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences. Oprah's “O” Magazine selected her as one of 20 women for the first ever “O Power List”, a group of visionary women making a mark in business, politics, and the arts. She has performed at venues across the world, including the White House in May of 2009, by invitation of President Obama and the First Lady. She has also served as a mentor and educator in the non-profit world, teaching poetry and performance to incarcerated youth. She currently works in the tech industry at Snap Inc. facilitating talking circles and developing curriculum to support company wide DEI initiatives that scale empathy and understanding. Mayda had also been a devoted student of various healing practices and African Traditional Religions. She is a third degree Reiki Master, and completed a two year Indigenous African Spiritual Technologies program with respected Dagara elder Malidoma Some. Soon after she was led into the ancient Yoruba spiritual tradition of Ifa. She was initiated into the mysteries of the ocean deity, Olokun in 2017. Christine Gutierrez, MA, LMHC is a Latina licensed psychotherapist, life coach and expert in love addiction, trauma, abuse, and self- esteem. Gutierrez, is also the author of the #1 best selling book I Am Diosa: A Journey to Healing Deep, Loving Yourself, and Coming Back Home to Soul. Christine currently resides in Puerto Rico with her husband, Fernando Samalot, and their pup, Bodhi. Christine begins the episode by telling her experience of getting into soul work. Even as a child, she had a passion for healing, and carried that passion into college, where she became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. She also explains to Diana and Ednesha her struggles with love addiction, how it was hard to realize her addiction, and how she found help through her issues. Christine continues on by telling the listeners about her book, I Am Diosa: A Journey to Healing Deep, Loving Yourself, and Coming Back Home to Soul. She recalls how she went about getting a book deal, and what it meant to her that such a big publishing group believed in her work and message. However, her writing journey was not an easy one. She details the pain she was experiencing as she crafted her book, and how she needed to stop production at a point due to the passing of her mentor. As the episode concludes, Christine tells the history of her group, The Diosa Tribe. The group was forged from Christine's recognition that the mental health field lacked diversity. She clung to any women of color she could find in her work, and from there the tribe was formed. Now the tribe serves to help women from all walks of life acknowledge and heal their soul wounds. An important message Christine wants her tribe to remember is to find someone matches your greatness. Thank you so much for tuning into BeREAL this week! Once upon a time, four sisters led their country to freedom. Their names were Minerva, Patria, Maria Teresa, and Dedé. Though they lived in a beautiful country, it was ruled by a cruel and arrogant dictator. Minerva wanted to do something about the injustices she saw, so she recruited her sisters, hosted secret meetings, and gathered weapons for a revolution. A New York City native with almost 20 years of experience in the publishing industry working on recognized titles such as Elle, Elle Décor, and JFK Jr's magazine, George, Lisa Loverro suddenly found herself a victim of the recession in 2008 when she lost her job as Managing Editor for Latina Magazine. During this time of uncertainty, Lisa decided to reinvent herself and pursue her passion to become a freelance travel journalist. Selling all her belongings and ending her lease on the apartment she had lived in for 17 years, Lisa set out to explore the world and, literally, ride out the recession on an airplane. With her clothes in a Manhattan storage unit and a P.O. box for her mail, Lisa managed to use her contacts and street smarts to maneuver herself from one destination to another. Bienvenidos a Inconfundiblemente Latino, soy Julio Muñiz. Lorraine, bienvenida a Inconfundiblemente Latino.
