Kris Allen won American Idol in 2009 and spent the next fifteen years doing the opposite of what that's supposed to look like. He walked away from his major label deal, started his own independent label DogBear Records, and took eight years between albums to make sure the next one was actually worth putting out.In this conversation, recorded here in Nashville, Kris talks about what the "gap years" between Letting You In and Pole Vaulter were really about — the family decisions, the creative struggle, the COVID slowdown that made him finally sit still long enough to write something real. We get into the "Heartless" moment on American Idol, what it felt like to know he had a chance at winning, and why he still considers "Live Like We're Dying" something like a karaoke song he happens to own. Kris also opens up about the addiction themes woven into Pole Vaulter, why he guards his private life more carefully than almost anything else, and what he's building next.Kris Allen is an American Idol winner, independent artist, and Nashville-based musician.
