Winter can be a sleepy time at the National Parks on Lake Superior, but at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Munising, Michigan, visitors come to snowmobile, mush dogs, snowshoe, fish and cross-country ski. But the biggest event to bring folks into the park is the Michigan Ice Fest. In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with Ice Fest organizer Bill Thompson about the event and what makes Pictured Rocks such a Mecca for the sport. Key Takeaways:The Michigan Ice Fest has grown from a small gathering in 1991 to an internationally recognized event, drawing over 1,100 participants from 38 states and seven countries.Ice climbing at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers a one-of-a-kind experience, with ice formations over open water that can't be found anywhere else in the world.Ice Fest caters to all skill levels, from beginners as young as eight to seasoned climbers, with professional athletes providing instruction and inspiration at the event.Even in warmer winters with limited ice, the festival continues as an educational and community event, showcasing presentations and fostering camaraderie. The event's unique location, accessibility, and passionate community make it a cornerstone of adventure tourism in Munising, Michigan.Notable Quotes:“With the advent of social media and a few professional athletes spreading the word, there's nowhere in the world that you can go ice climbing over open water, with crashing waves and the beauty of Lake Superior.”“Ice climbing is a sport for anyone looking to go out, have an adventure, and try something new.”“Ice climbing takes you places that not a lot of people in this world can get to.”“Our safety system is really thought out. Instead of focusing on, ‘Oh man, I'm high,' I'm focusing on the ice in front of me. You have all of these interesting patterns of ice, you can hear the water trickling behind it, so the sounds are very unique. It's just really, really special."Resources:Michigan Ice Fest Website (michiganicefest.com) – Learn more about the event, clinics, and presentations.Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (www.nps.gov/piro/index.htm) – Explore the beauty of this unique park.Ice Climbing Safety and Equipment (michiganicefest.com/information/festival-planning/safety/) – Better nderstand the gear and precautions used at the festival.Connect With Us:Website: (nplsf.org/podcast)Facebook: (facebook.com/NPLSF)LinkedIn: (linkedin.com/company/national-parks-of-lake-superior-foundation)Sponsors:Cafe Imports: Supporting environmental sustainability in coffee-growing regions since 1993. Jeannette is joined by Amber Nuttall and Alistair Gosling all the way from COP29 in Azerbaijan to discuss their journey from launching the Extreme Sports channel to evolving their business into a platform focused on adventure, sustainability, and community engagement. Alistair shares insights on the entrepreneurial spirit driving change in the environmental sector, while Amber highlights the importance of amplifying diverse voices at COP29. KEY TAKEAWAYS The current emphasis is on environmental sustainability, with a strong belief that everyone can contribute to positive change. The goal is to inspire a broad audience to take action, highlighting the importance of collaboration and the need for "8 billion imperfect environmentalists." At COP29, the primary focus is on finance and the need for substantial investment in sustainability initiatives. The discussions aim to encourage governments to make impactful decisions that will shape the future of environmental efforts. There is a growing trend of entrepreneurs and innovative companies stepping up to address environmental challenges. Examples include sustainable brands gaining traction and initiatives like the Earthshot Prize recognising impactful organisations. We should encourage individuals and organisations to embrace bravery, boldness, and brilliance in their efforts to create a sustainable future, while also recognising the need for balance in addressing both climate and technological advancements. BEST MOMENTS "We inspired a good few million people around the world to go and get active, drive health, fitness, well-being through getting into adventure and extreme sports." "We need 8 billion imperfect environmentalists in the world today. We don't need a handful of perfect ones." "What I'm loving seeing is the entrepreneurial spirit shining through where entrepreneurs are taking advantage and really drilling into opportunities to change the dial." "It's very clear. It's finance. It's all about finance this year... we can only hope that our governments come together and make the right decisions around that."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Celebrating 25 years, this is the premier Irish music festival for the entire mid-west, drawing incredible international musical acts, artistic performers, arts and crafts, Irish dancing, and tastes of the "old country". We have on Kris Vanderstelt, Vice President, and volunteer coordinator for the fest to share what's new for 2024, what not to miss, and insider tips on how to make the most of your festival experience. Tickets are on sale now, and we highly recommend you plan ahead for this very popular event.Speaking of volunteers, it takes a lot of them to make the festival run smoothly, so if you are interested in helping out, please contact our next guest. He'll also share all the amazing things you can do at the Luge park, which is located inside Muskegon State Park. Plus, did you know you can do a dual zip line here? True story. The Muskegon Museum of Art, founded in 1912, is known throughout the Midwest as having one fine collection, and we think its stellar reputation is about to get even better if that's possible. Kirk Hallman, Director, shares with us the exciting news about their $15 million expansion that is set to open in February 2025. The Muskegon community has been working on this since 2018, and the addition will feature a huge new gallery which will allow the museum to bring in bigger shows and exhibitions for all to enjoy. Lashelle Mikesell, Digital Media and Marketing Coordinator for Visit Muskegon then stops by to share other fall activities to enjoy in this neck of the woods. She recommends catching the end of a few art exhibits at the museum, including a quilt exhibit that is ending at the of September, and a jewelry exhibit that is showing through the end of 2024. For fall, Muskegon is awash in fun festivals, find a complete listing of events in the area here. Lashelle recommends the self-guided leaf peeping tour you can follow called "Depot to Depot". This podcast episode covers all the details and preparations for a long solo trip in the Arctic that I'm starting today! After 30 hours of driving and a 2 hour bush plane flight to Nueltin Lake I'll be heading north of the treeline direct into the Barren Lands of the Arctic. Once there, I'll be completely alone and out of touch for 30 days. The only written description of the river is a few pages in a book written by a missionary in the late 1800's. The trip spans the Thlewiaza, The-Tinne, Kognak and Tha-Anne rivers and will probably include caribou and bear encounters, whitewater and giant ice-covered lakes, and insanely complex navigational challenges. Once the trip is underway, I'll be sharing a few photos from the field a small satellite device So if you're interested in adventure and how well jiu-jitsu works against giant Hudson Bay Polar Bears then follow along! The best place to stay current is probably on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/essentialwilderness/), although this page on Essential Wilderness (https://tinyurl.com/nunavutsolo) should have a map that updates with my location once I'm on the water  I believe that pictures from this trip will also get cross-posted on Threads (https://www.threads.net/@stephan_kesting) Tiktok (https://www.tiktok.com/@essentialwilderness), and  Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/@essentialwilderness/community) I'll be back to the world and jiu-jitsu in late July. Hopefully! Cheers, Stephan P.S. Rebroadcasting our intimate conversation with backcountry skier Melissa Gill about loss, grief, nature, and the beauty of life. May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a time that calls for reflecting, learning, and engaging in meaningful dialogues about the complex world of mental health. To honor this month, we're reaching into our podcast archives to bring back a conversation that beautifully intertwines grief, mental wellbeing, and the healing power of outdoor pursuits. This is an older conversation that's worth a re-listen. Since we last published this episode last May, the Patagonia film The Meaningless Pursuit of Snow, which Mel references in this conversation, is now available. And it's really beautiful, y'all. Worth a watch. Content notice: This episode contains real and honest depictions of grief and death. If you are reading this and you're grieving, know that your pain is valid, irrespective of what prompted it—be it the death of a loved one, a relationship at its end, or the loss of employment. It's a journey without a map, and what works for one person may prove futile for another. Einstein once said, "Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better." That certainly has been the case for us. Melissa Gill is a woodworker, meditation teacher, Head of Operations for SimplyMTB and a lover of anything outdoors. She sees backcountry skiing as a playground for adventure and self development and in the summer months, can be found trail running or sleeping in a hammock in the middle of a forest. Of all things in life, she is most is passionate about mental health and creating safe spaces for healing for both her and her community. As a mindfulness meditation teacher, she believes most things in life can be solved, healed and made more beautiful with a heavy dose of self compassion.  Like this episode? POW's goal is to give a voice to the outdoor sports community (or the Outdoor State, as they call it) and channel it into political will to help get energy transition and related climate change policies passed.Mario has been working in climate for many years. Prior to POW, he was the international director of the Climate Reality Project, which was created by former Vice President Al Gore. Hi everyone, it's James La Barrie from Beyond Marketing. I'm excited to share a passion project that's been rolling around in my brain for years! A new skydiving podcast called the 20 Minute Call! This podcast is focused on interviews with the people I'm most curious about. I'll be taking a deep dive with them, not just talking about their skydiving accomplishments, but getting to know them beyond the jumpsuit. The 20 Minute Call is a podcast about the dreamers, boundary pushers, rebels and champions of the skydiving industry.I believe everyone has a story and I'm thrilled to capture the stories from every perspective within the sport from Hall of Famers, World Champions, DZO's, riggers, fun jumpers and instructors. Your support is instrumental in making this project a success. So, I'm extending an invitation to you to be a part of this journey with me. Please follow The 20 Minute Call to ensure you stay connected and never miss an episode.

As my family drove to Alaska (currently spending time in Fairbanks) I have seen many bike campers and was reminded of my conversation with a guest from episode 047 with Mason Gravely.  We have driven over 13,000 miles in the RV since January all across the country and passing bike campers along various highways through Alaska and Canada it brings new meaning to biking across the country. While Mason's story is interesting I don't suggest just jumping on a bike in Fairbanks.  I am bringing back this conversation today given our location in Fairbanks and as a nod to all those who have experimented with bike camping.   This week on my email list I share some untourist experiences in Alaska, some ways we made it through our hike in Denali using simple adventure tactics, and some gear we are appreciating to keep adventuring amidst the swarms of mosquitos this year.  If you aren't subscribed to the email list I encourage you to do so. If you enjoy the ideas, find joy or inspiration from my work, you can also buy me a coffee to say thanks and support the show.  Coffee and ice cream are staples in our adventure diet and help me keep the content creation process flowing.   Website for this episode: https://ordinarysherpa.com/124Subscribe to the email List:  https://ordinarysherpa.com/subscribe/ Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ordsherpa
