Ian talks with the filmmakers behind the new movie, Jesus Revolution! In the late 1960s, a hippie preacher named Lonnie Frisbee (Jonathan Roumie) teamed up with struggling Conservative pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer) to form a new spiritual movement that captured the hearts of a wayward generation. Caught up in the excitement was Greg Laurie (Joel Courtney), a teen looking for answers that neither the buttoned-up class nor the hair-hang-down crowd could provide. In this (very) brief interview, Ian asks co-directors Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle, and producer Kevin Downes, about why this story is relevant more than fifty years on--and how McCorkle balanced his duties as co-director and composer.Jesus Revolution is now playing in theatres, courtesy of Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company.Show Links:Watch the Jesus Revolution trailer.Watch Ian's 2021 interview with co-directors Jon and Andrew Erwin for The Jesus Music (which acts as a springboard for Jesus Revolution).Watch Ian's 2021 interview with producer Kevin Downes for American Underdog. He discusses the striking similarities between Gen Z and the generation that took part in the counterculture movement in the 60s and 70s portrayed in Jesus Revolution. He expands on this theme by encouraging Christians to go on the spiritual offense by living on mission with optimism. (28:57) Erwin shares his favorite theme and scene in the movie, why “Pirate's Cove” in California is so important to Jesus Revolution, and the way the Holy Spirit moved in miraculous ways while they filmed (40:53) He closes by challenging the audience to trust Jesus, get out of their seats to reach Gen Z, and watch for God to work in this generation. In June 1971, a headline on the cover of Time Magazine trumpeted “The Jesus Revolution". As readers dug into the inside pages of the cover story they found the following statement:“Jesus is alive and well and living in the radical spiritual fervor of a growing number of young Americans who have proclaimed an extraordinary religious revolution in his name. Their message: the Bible is true, miracles happen, God really did so love the world that he gave it his only begotten son."However, strangely enough, just five years earlier, the same magazine featured a cover shrouded in darkness that blurted out in bold red ink: “Is God Dead?"Hmm. What happened during those five years to create such a cultural difference? Why such a seismic shift in the way people viewed Jesus Christ? What took place was a revival, as young people far and wide, disillusioned by the Vietnam war, civil unrest, and the feeling of hopelessness, found a place of belonging, compassion, understanding, and empathy for people, all rooted in their love for Jesus Christ. This happening was called simply the “Jesus Movement".What was happening in the late 1960s and the early 1970s is not a whole lot different from what we are experiencing today. People are still disillusioned by war and civil unrest, as well as cancel culture, gender issues, the right to life, wokeness, and on and on it goes. It would be easy to suggest another revival is desperately needed.“Jesus Revolution" is a new movie from Kingdom Story Company that examines what exactly took place during those turbulent years of the late 1960s and early 1970s, and the hippie culture that was seemingly taking over the country at the time. It explores how the radical love of Jesus brought revival to a nation reeling from the wounds inflicted by mankind. My guest today, Kevin Downes, has had a front row seat to the making of “Jesus Revolution". As a co-founder of Kingdom Story Company and a producer on the film, he has been able to help cultivate the film's powerful message of hope and revival that will undoubtedly pierce the hearts of moviegoers near and far.Kevin joins us on the Crossmap Podcast to talk about whether a revival of such epic proportions could happen today. Listen as he shares how this movie can serve as a kick-off of sorts to ushering in a new hunger for Jesus Christ that has not been seen in 50 years, and why right now is the right time for 'Jesus Revolution'.Links to Kevin Downes Kingdom Story Company Kevin on Twitter Kevin on Instagram Links to Crossmap Crossmap Website Crossmap Facebook

Dustin Plantholt’s “Life’s Tough—You Can Be Tougher” podcast this week features Jon Erwin, renowned American Christian-film director and producer, screenwriter and author. Jon, along with his brother Andrew have had four feature films all opening in the top-ten movies in America and collectively grossing more than $100 million at the U.S. box office. They are also among only eight directors to receive the incredibly rare A+ CinemaScore twice, joining a list that includes Stephen Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis. Jon Erwin was born in Birmingham, Alabama and is the son of Senator Hank Erwin and grandson of Medal of Honor recipient and World War II veteran, Henry Eugene "Red" Erwin, Sr. Jon began his career—as a teenager—working as a camera operator for ESPN in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Soon after he embarked on a fulltime career as a sports cameraman covering University of Alabama games all over the country—working with ESPN College Football Primetime, FOX NFL, the NBA, and covered events like the X Games and the Super Bowl. In 2002, Jon and his brother Andrew started their own production company, venturing into creating commercials, documentaries, and music videos. They found enormous success in the world of music, directing music videos and producing concerts and television programs for platinum artists like Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Casting Crowns, Switchfoot, Skillet, and others. The brothers received eleven nominations and were honored with wins for Music Video of the Year at the GMA Dove Awards for three consecutive years. The Erwin Brothers have also produced and directed several documentaries, including the multi-award winning 9/11story, The Cross And The Towers; a music documentary with Third Day, Live Relations; a documentary filmed in the Galapagos Islands, The Mysterious Islands; and the international dramatic short-film series, God Provides. In 2010 the Erwin Brothers shifted their focus and began exclusively developing dramatic feature films—setting a level of expectation for authenticity and storytelling that is a cut above. Their debut feature, released by Samuel Goldwyn, was the coming-of-age OCTOBER BABY, which opened as a top-ten movie in America and eventually earned more than $5 million at the box office. Their second feature film, MOMS’ NIGHT OUT, was released in 2014 by Sony’s AFFIRM Films and Provident Films—a family comedy starring Sarah Drew, Patricia Heaton, Sean Astin, and Trace Adkins. In 2015 they released their third feature film, WOODLAWN, which starred Jon Voight, Sean Astin, and newcomer Caleb Castille, that was met with critical acclaim and received an A+ CinemaScore. Their 2018 music biopic, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE, shocked the entertainment industry to become the number one independent movie of 2018 and the highest grossing film in the history of its distributor, collecting more than $83 million in box office revenue on a production budget of just $7 million. In 2018, the brothers and their filmmaking collaborator Kevin Downes announced the formation of Kingdom Story Company, a production company specializing in Christian films that will be distributed through Lionsgate. Some will be directed by the Erwins, while other movies will use newcomers and other veteran directors. Jon is also proud to announce the release of his first book—available on August 18th—BEYOND VALOR: A World War II Story of Extraordinary Heroism, Sacrificial Love, and a Race against Time, co-written with William Doyle—an award-winning New York Times bestselling author and television producer. This dramatic biography of Red Erwin—Jon’s grandfather— is supported by 15 years of research, which includes interviews with fellow crewmen, oral histories, and Erwin family correspondence and press interviews. Readers learn about Red Erwin’s exceptional life, from growing up as the son of a coal miner in Birmingham, Alabama, becoming the man of the house at age 10 when his father died, to joining the army reserve as an aviation cadet. Red Erwin’s dream was to become a pilot, but he struggled with landings and instead accepted a reassignment as a radio operator, which led to the fateful journey. At the same time, readers follow as Erwin meets Martha Elizabeth “Betty” Starnes at church, the woman who would become the love of his life -- the woman who stayed by his side for fifty-seven years, through more than forty surgeries, through Erwin’s pain and despair, his reentry into civilian life and the start of his career at the Veterans Administration, where he dedicated himself to helping veterans for the next thirty-seven years. Readers discover that, despite his broken body, Erwin lived the rest of his life to the fullest. He thrived personally and professionally, raised four children, was patriotic and cherished representing the Medal of Honor, while most importantly, remaining strong in his faith. “Today my brother and I are partners in a thriving entertainment business, and we strive to be of service to others by telling stories that have the power to uplift and inspire people,” writes Jon. “In our day-to-day work, the memory and lessons of Red Erwin inspire us with the ideals of endurance and perseverance, of pushing ourselves toward something that we believe is right and worth fighting for. The difference between success and failure can be when an individual chooses to quit. And I’ve found that the people who are successful are the people who can go above and beyond. I learned that from my grandfather.”  Beyond Valor is the miraculous true story of a soldier's unspeakable heroism, a woman's unfailing love, the faith that secured them all, as told through the lens of his loving grandson. Join Dustin and Jon for a candid interview on Jon’s successful film career and listen how his faith is instrumental in the stories he tells. Jon says, “My brother and I tell stories that showcase the power of the gospel … I think that the values that we hold dear as Christians are immensely appealing — things like sacrifice and virtue and honor and destiny and things like that … and when they're presented correctly, they're appealing to everybody."

Smith, Casting Crowns, Switchfoot, Skillet and others and received eleven GMA Dove Awards nominations and 3 wins for Music Video of the Year. In 2010, Andrew and Jon began exclusively developing dramatic feature films. Their features have all opened in the top ten box office on opening weekend and they have received the coveted A+ Cinema Score twice. Their features include OCTOBER BABY, MOMS’ NIGHT OUT, WOODLAWN and the 2018 smash hit I CAN ONLY IMAGINE. In 2019, Andrew and Jon, with partners Kevin Downes and Tony Young, launched Kingdom Story along with a first-look deal with Lionsgate. The first film from that venture is I STILL BELIEVE, a biopic about CCM megastar Jeremy Camp slated for 3/20/20. Andrew serves as Chief Creative Officer at Kingdom Story Company as well as produces and directs feature films with his brother Jon and Kevin Downes. Today’s conversation is with actor, writer, director and producer Kevin Downes. Kevin has been part of the film industry in these various roles over the last 20 years and has most recently been a part of movies like “Woodlawn,” “Mom’s Night Out,” and “I Can Only Imagine.” His most recent project in partnership with the Erwin Brothers, is called “I Still Believe,” starring: KJ Apa, Britt Robertson, Shania Twain, and Gary Sinise. This beautiful movie tells the story of Christian artist Jeremy Camp’s life and faith journey as he faced incredible heart ache, and also incredible hope.  Who would have thought that when Kevin and I had this conversation just a couple of weeks ago, what the world would look like today. Kevin and I talk all about following God in your calling, and the value of stewarding stories that highlight the truth that we don’t know what will happen, but His hope and his love are big enough to take our questions. Right now, we are in the throws around the world of a time that feels incredibly uncertain and unknown. Many of us feel completely out of control, are struggling to see how this is all going to pan out and feel trapped in a sea of uncertainty. Dear ones, look around and press in to the stories around you. Take this opportunity to ask God to show you how to weather this wilderness we are ALL walking in, and support and spur one another on. Even as we take a steps back, that doesn’t mean we have to live totally isolated. We can press in from a far. We can look more fully into the faces of the ones in our homes. And together, we will cling to His promises. One of my current favorites is this: “I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.” Isaiah 42:16 Take care of yourselves, take care of each other. You matter. We all matter.  Since the recording of this episode, almost all the theaters across the U.S. have decided to close in order to protect people in light of the covid-19 pandemic. BUT, this conversation still couldn’t be more timely. AND praise the Lord, when the movie came out, it had an incredible opening weekend at the box office! If you have a way to go see it, GO! You will not regret it. If not, hang out with us here on the podcast today, and pray for all of the industries affected by the pandemic. We are all walking in ways we have not known before, but we are not walking alone.  Find ways to connect with Kevin, the movie, references from the podcast below. ---- References:  Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, CA Erwin Brothers “I Can Only Imagine” Jeremy Camp “Woodlawn” “I Still Believe” (the song) KJ Apa Nashville tornados Shari Rigby’s episode of the Simply Stories Podcast “Overcomer” “I Still Believe” (the movie) Check your local theaters on whether or not they are open due to the covid-19 pandemic.  Scripture References:  John 17:16- In the world not of it Matthew 18:12- Leave the 99, the parable of the lost sheep Ephesians 4:14- Not being tossed by the wind Romans 8:28-He works all things for good John 2:1-11-Water into wine Psalm 34:18- He’s close to the broken-hearted Psalm 30:1-5- Joy comes in the morning Esther 4:14- For such a time as this Deuteronomy 31:6- He will never leave us or forsake us Connect with the “I Still Believe” movie: Website  Facebook, Twitter, Instagram Hashtag: #IStillBelieve Connect with Kevin:  Facebook Twitter Instagram Connect with Emily & catch up on the Simply Stories Podcast:  Instagram Facebook Blog Sign up for our newsletter!

It's a story similar to David and Goliath. A small budget movie about faith and forgiveness goes up against the big bad Hollywood to prove it's worth. Nobody imagined I Can Only Imagine would beat out big budget box office films and open in the number 3 spot in the country. But the films' producers say they not only imagined it, they prayed for it too. I sat down with Kevin Downes, an actor-turned-producer, who told me he and his collaborators had a plan from the beginning. They wanted to tell the story of Bart Millard, the lead singer of a Christian band called Mercy Me. Growing up in Greenville, Texas, Bart Millard suffered physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his father, Arthur. When Arthur becomes terminally ill, he finds redemption by embracing his faith and rediscovering his love for his son. Years later, Bart's troubled childhood and mended relationship with his dad inspires him to write the hit song "I Can Only Imagine" as singer of the Christian band Mercy Me. The movie was directed by the Erwin brothers, Andrew and Jon Erwin and stars Dennis Quaid, Cloris Leachman, Trace Adkins and Broadway star J. Michael Finley as Bart. In August 2017 Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions signed on as distributors giving the film a nationwide release. But Downes tells me they began marketing the film, which shot mostly in Oklahoma, months before it was released. It helped that I Can Only Imagine was already a hit on the Christian music charts and the band was performing in on tour while promoting the film. More importantly, he says this movie strikes a chord with people in the "flyover states" who feel left out of the Hollywood conversation. He says they are craving content that appeals to them and their values as much as a Marvel fan craves the next Avengers. And the proof is in the box office numbers. So far, I Can Only Imagine has made $75 million dollars and was made for only $7 million making it the highest grossing film ever for Roadside Attractions. Talk about a return on your investment! Downes tells me they knew all along something Hollywood didn't know: David always wins.
