Welcome back everyone! Today on the Thriving Beyond Belief podcast is our guest, Jarrett Stephens! A message of hope for an anxious day: God never changes. He is still here and ready to transform our lives. What we must ask is if we are ready to respond to him. In these turbulent times, many wonder where God is…and why he doesn’t seem to be intervening. Sure, he performed miracles in the Bible, but what about now? What about us? In The Always God: He Hasn’t Changed and You Are Not Forgotten (Jun 1, 2021, Multnomah), Pastor Jarrett Stephens reveals how God is always present, always working, and always faithful. In The Always God, Jarrett, pastor of Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, gives hope to those who think God has given up on us. It invites us to quiet ourselves and listen to the God who does not change or forget us. Not ever. And that changes everything. Jarrett asks readers: Do you wonder if God has forgotten you? He responds, “I wrote this book for you because I’ve been where you are. As a pastor, I walk with people who are where you are: in the midst of a trial, needing to be reminded that our God is always God and needing to be invited to journey with him to a place of greater assurance and intimacy. Regardless of how things may seem, he is always the same and can always be trusted.” Jarrett shares moments of his wild and sometimes painful journey, including: As a boy, when he was a victim of sex abuse from a little league coach for four years When he and his wife lost a child to miscarriage The years he prayed for a prodigal brother The suffering of a dear friend with cancer Bringing sound biblical teaching along with comforting guidance, he can help your audience answer such questions as: Is God listening and does he see me? Can I have an unwavering confidence that God is always here and always working? Can I get to a place where, no matter what happens, doubt won’t overtake me? Jarrett’s prayer is that every reader will discover in a very personal and powerful way just how faithful the always God really is. Jarrett Stephens is the senior pastor of Champion Forest Baptist Church, in Houston, Texas, one of the largest and most diverse churches in America, and he is the author of The Mountains Are Calling.Previously, he served as a teaching pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church alongside Dr. Jack Graham. He has a bachelor of arts in biblical studies and psychology from Ouachita Baptist University, a master of divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a doctorate of ministry from Liberty Theological Seminary. Jarrett has been featured on The 700 Club, I Am Second and dozens of radio and podcast shows. “In these pages, you’ll find empathy, wisdom, encouragement, and a thoroughly biblical perspective for times when God seems distant or disinterested. Jarrett Stephens doesn’t flinch as he courageously confronts some of the most nettlesome issues that vex so many followers of Jesus. Whatever you do, don’t miss this journey toward wholeness. Let Jarrett lead you to a place of genuine hope and faith!” —Lee Strobel, bestselling author of The Case for Christ and The Case for Miracles

Evangelism is one of those parts of the Christian life that is often scary for people. Intimidated by questions of how, and worried about how it will be received, are often enough to stop us from speaking out. Jeremy Doorten of ‘e3 Canada' and ‘I Am Second' (https://www.e3ministry.ca) joins us this morning to answer those and other questions and hopefully encourage each of us to trust Jesus as we let our light shine in a dark and hurting world. Doug Bender is an I Am Second writer and small groups coach. He developed many of the small group tools found at iamsecond.com and has coached churches, organizations, and individuals to use I Am Second groups to share the message of Jesus with their friends and family. I recently sat down with Doug to discuss the launch of his new I Am Second book - I Found Love. Doug and I met about 8 years ago when I had the incredible honor of contributing a post to the I Am Second blog. One of the highest honors of my blogging days. From the beginning, I have been a fan of I Am Second and their incredible ministry. In this episode we discuss their early books, the vision and growth of this incredible movement. I Found Love is the highly anticipated new book from I Am Second, gathering together stories of people who searched everywhere for fulfillment and wholeness and found it only when they surrendered to God. People whose stories appear include the following, among others: David and Tamela Mann Jason Castro Sean Lowe Stephen Baldwin Moving, compelling, and profoundly inspiring, the stories found here remind us that our hearts will always be restless until they find their rest in God and always unsatisfied until we find the love of God. I am so thankful for all that I Am Second has provided. Incredible movement with powerful stories for everyone. The book launches January 6th but can be pre-ordered now. Sometimes before we know it, darkness can wrap itself around our hearts and minds. But when we feel ourselves lost and without hope, God is always there to lead us toward a new way of living, where we can find forgiveness for others—and ourselves. Beth Nimmo is the mother of Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. Beth didn’t know she’d ever see light again after the loss of her precious daughter, but God used Rachel’s strong faith and spirit of joy to guide Beth to help troubled teens. TJ Stevens was one such teen—after an abusive childhood and several suicide attempts, TJ walked into his Virginia high school with a gun, filled with a darkness driving him to do things he’d have never thought possible. But when TJ was on his knees in desperation, he felt God moving him toward a different outcome. As TJ says, “It’s never too late to turn around and do the right thing.” Beth and TJ’s paths crossed along parallel lines, and together, they share how God has met them in their lowest points, and how pain doesn’t have to be a life sentence. We’ve got a good one for you today. Nathan Sheets is CEO of Nature Nate’s Honey, and he was also involved with I Am Second, and E3, and you’ll hear a bit of all of those stories. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. When we sat down to talk to Nathan, we had no idea how deep he was going to take us. Right away, he opened up about the ups and downs he has gone through with a level of candor that we couldn’t even believe. If you’re looking for what life as an entrepreneur looks like—and we mean, really looks like—Nathan Sheets has a no holds barred take on the entrepreneurial journey. Image management is a struggle that everyone faces, but it’s one that we rarely address. And for entrepreneurs, this issue is especially acute. Because as an entrepreneur, you have to look like you have it all together, right? You’ve got employees and shareholders relying on you—the leader. That type of pressure creates a situation where it’s all too easy to want to hide behind a manufactured version of ourselves. And Nathan Sheets told us exactly what that pressure looks like and exactly where it can take you. We’re so grateful that he was willing to open up and be completely honest with us, and we hope his story about the pitfalls of struggling alone—and the need for real, true community—will serve as both a warning sign and an encouragement to you on your journey. As always, thanks for listening. Nate Larkin, author of Samson and the Pirate Monks, shares about the struggles men face with porn who are in the church, his story and how he overcame it, and what other men can and should do. Nate Larkin is the founder of the Samson Society. A graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, Nate started out as a church planter in the 1980’s but abandoned the pastoral ministry after five years because he was in despair over his inability to gain victory over porn and prostitution. He went into business, forming Engineering Support Team, a company that provides marketing, customer care and technical writing services for forensic engineers. After two decades of secret sexual behavior, Nate was discovered by his wife. That’s when he finally sought help. His first steps toward freedom came in a 12-step recovery program, which breathed new life into his experience of the gospel. In 2004, Nate and a few friends launched the Samson Society in Franklin, Tennessee, as a place where Christian men of every description – not just those battling addiction – can bring their real selves, say the real truth, and walk together in the light. The Samson Society has grown to more than 400 local groups and dozens of virtual groups that connect online. You can learn more about Nate’s story in the book “Samson and the Pirate Monks: Calling Men to Authentic Brotherhood,” which was published by Thomas Nelson in 2007, or his I Am Second video on YouTube. Nate also wrote, with NASCAR legend Darrell Waltrip, “Sundays Will Never Be the Same: Racing, Tragedy, and Redemption – My Life in America’s Fastest Sport” (Simon and Schuster 2012). NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 24, 2018 -- Austin Carlile, founder and former lead singer of Of Mice & Men, shares the ups and downs of his struggle with a genetic disorder and his miraculous healing in a new film released today from I Am Second, a global storytelling organization.2018 IA2_Carlile.png"When we first heard Austin's story, we knew we had to share it with the world through I Am Second," said I Am Second President Lance Villio. "Austin's powerful journey shows that no matter how far we run away from God, He will always welcome us back with open arms. That is a message of which we all need to be reminded." Carlile's life dramatically changed at the age of 17 when his mother unexpectedly passed away from an aneurysm caused by an undiagnosed case of Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder of connective tissue. Carlile soon discovered he also carries the genetic mutation for the syndrome, though he didn't realize at the time the lifelong pain it would cause. Emotionally angry at God for taking his mother away and physically distraught from Marfan syndrome, Carlile discovered music as an outlet for his rage and pain. He founded the band Of Mice & Men and started writing about tough issues such as bullying, depression, suicide and losing loved ones. "When music came into my life, I saw it as my new god," Carlile says in the film. As Carlile began touring, the pain of Marfan syndrome began to take its toll. He sought to mask it with alcohol and drug abuse, but soon found himself in an unhealthy cycle. Because of his diagnosis, doctors advised him against any physical activity and yet he jumped off stage and into mosh pits nightly. After an extensive heart surgery to replace a portion of his aorta, he returned to the band, but the issues got worse. Unable to cope with the pain and unsure of the purpose in his life, Carlile called his dad to ask what he was doing wrong. His dad replied with a simple question, "Where's God in your life?" Those words hung on Carlile's spirit and forever changed him. He became sober, and turned his life over to God. Little did he know, what that would mean. Still in excruciating pain each time he performed, doctors told Carlile in October 2016 he could no longer sing, as each time he did, it tore holes in his spine. Their writings include the well-known book “I Do Again,” their 30-year story of marriage, betrayal, infidelity, divorce, emotional damage, forgiveness, restoration, trust, and re-marriage. They are co-authors of “Still LoLo” with their daughters Lauren and Brittany. This remarkable and life-changing story has been featured on The Today Show, I Am Second, Focus On The Family, The Village Church Interview with Matt Chandler, Good Morning America, and many more. Here's my interview with Jeff Scruggs.
Power of Purity | Helping Men to Honor God with their Sexual Gift
Nate Larkin's wife caught him... all alone... in his office... watching porn in the middle of the night. They had a long talk that night... and Nate's wife forgave him. But then... several days later... she found a condom on the bathroom floor of their home that Nate couldn't quite explain. That's when Nate's wife sat him on the edge of their bed... and said the words that would change his life. I still love you... but I don't like you. I don't trust you. I don't respect you... and I don't think you can ever change. Nate Larkin had gone to seminary... studied for the ministry... pastored a church... and struggled deeply for many years with his secret sex addiction. When his wife spoke those fateful words to him... he knew he had to change because he was about to loose everything that meant the most to him in life. It was only then Nate found his way to a secular recovery group... and slowly began to learn the ideas and concepts that would genuinely change his heart... his life... his marriage... and even the expression of his sexual gift. In these 3 episodes (102-104) Nate shares the story of his amazing journey from sexual bondage and addiction to sexual healing and freedom. It's an amazing story... and you will be blessed! Nate Larkin is an author, speaker, and founder of The Samson Society - a ministry that facilitates authentic mens groups around the country toward the purpose of sexual healing and freedom. samsonsociety.com I Am Second

After marrying his teenage sweet heart and having two children by their early 20’s, Jim Gillespie and his wife reached a crisis point of differences which led to divorce. Later, he and his wife were able to renew their love and remarry but that wasn’t the end of their struggles. Jim pursued careers in several lucrative businesses only to end up bankrupted and jobless on more than one occasion. Together, they faced enormous medical problems fighting diabetes and breast cancer. The toll this took on them physically, emotionally, and financially was exhausting. Most people dealing with these mountain-sized battles would have thrown in the towel long ago. What was it that enabled Jim to push through and come out stronger and with a greater sense of peace now more than ever? Jim answers those questions in today's podcast. Jim serves in many capacities but is Kansas City’s Executive Director for I Am Second, a web-based resource to share the love of Jesus through celebrity testimony. Are you carrying heavy burdens today? Are you searching for peace in the midst of a storm? God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. All we must do is place our trust in his Son Jesus Christ and you too will discover the grace of God, even in the midst of difficulties. ABOUT JESUS | SHARE YOUR STORY | PRAYER REQUEST | FOR PASTORS
