And so that's where we go, with me in the hot seat for a change, looking at fathers, parenting, violence, anger, rites of passage,  all washed down of course with large doses of plant medicine.I'm very grateful to Fabrice for having me on his show and if you're a French speaker I'd urge you to subscribe to his important podcast.Histoires De Mecs podcast.WebsiteInstagramTwitterTitle track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.     Audio Engineering by Sam Williams at  Right Royal Audio

If you've listened to this show before you'll be familiar with Sian O'Gorman, for it is she that provides the angelic vocal talent for the theme tune, recorded in the back of the van that is her gypsy home somewhere in Norfolk.I first met Sian by chance 6 or 7 years ago when she asked my neighbour who the person was with the doormat with the words 'fuck off' printed on it.  I never imagined that such a doormat could have such a profound effect on my life, and in the years that have passed she has become one of the most precious people in my life, collaborating on live music projects, composing the score for the film I made with Mai Hua (see Somme link attached) becoming part of my core team for my retreats in Nepal and mentoring my two daughters through her work at Spirit Horse. All of which should give you a taste of what a multi talented and extraordinary woman Sian O'Gorman is.Speaking from her native New Zealand  we cover the now common theme for this show of plant medicine, Covid, creativity and how it is to be living without lockdown. And for the first time on this show, rather than dividing the conversation with short musical interludes, I've included full length tracks to share with you the wonder of this incredibly talented artist from her work with NYX and Ancient Baby People.NYX (@nyx.edc on facebook & insta) Deep England Album out 19.03.21 - single out 22 Feb: https://ffm.to/deepengland.oisNYX version of Somme : https://nyx-edc.bandcamp.com/album/sketches-demos-rehearsals-epAncient Baby People  https://ancientbabypeople.bandcamp.com/album/ancient-baby-peopleTitle track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.     Audio Engineering by Sam Williams at  Right Royal Audio

O'Byrne is standing at the corner of Ninth Avenue and 36th Street with a to-go cup in each hand and the hood of his sweatshirt pulled up. It's six in the morning and very cold. He's put on twenty pounds since I last saw him and could be a laborer waiting for the gate to open at the construction site across the street. Now that he's out of the Army I'm supposed to call him Brendan, but I'm finding that almost impossible to do. We shake hands and he gives me one of the coffees and we go to get my car. The gash across his forehead is mostly healed, though I can still see where the stitches were. One of his front teeth is chipped and looks like a fang. He had a rough time when he got back to Italy; in some ways he was in more danger there than in combat. O'Byrne had been with Battle Company in the Korengal Valley, a small but extraordinarily violent slit in the foothills of the Hindu Kush mountains of eastern Afghanistan. He was just one soldier out of thirty but seemed to have a knack for putting words to the things that no one else really wanted to talk about.War - Sebastian JungerLike all of Sebastian Junger's work, he has a way of painting a picture of where we're going with simple, efficient eloquence, and never more so than this opening paragraph in his book War. I myself first met Brendan in New York City.  He had driven  more than 10 hours from his home in North Carolina to meet with me and attend the premier of a film I had made with Mai Hua about my men's work.  That's the kind of thing Brendan will do for a stranger.  With the boundless energy of a giant puppy, Brendan O'Byrne is full of nervous excitement, warmth, enthusiasm, laughter and love, behind which is a huge well of often painful life experience that gives him a profound wisdom and generosity of spirit.Featured in the Oscar nominated film Restrepo and its follow up Korengal, Brendan served 15 months in Afghanistan, and here he takes time to talk with me about his childhood, multi generational trauma, prison, addiction, PTSD and his time in the military.  He's an exceptional, raw, brave, sensitive and wounded man who I believe has so much to offer the world and I've wanted to share his indomitable spirit with you since this podcast's conception.    Title track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.     Audio Engineering by Sam Williams at  Right Royal Audio

First show of the year and it's Freny Pavri, one of the most delightful, funny, intelligent, talented people I know, and in her own lovely way - quite bonkers.Freny, who's of Iranian descent and brought up in India and the UK, was raised in the Zoroastrian faith, of which I know very little other than so was Freddie Mercury, which hardly displays a depth of understanding of such an ancient religion. Some of the rituals that Freny describes are around menstruation and the tradition of strict confinement that was imposed on her as a teenager, and how she broke away from the Zoroastrianism and has since found her own path in life.Whilst I'm not a fan of organised religion, I absolutely recognise that people with some kind of faith benefit from their beliefs and practice, and I can't help thinking that the strict restrictions that Freny rebelled against have been part of forming her as such a free spirit. She's a very disciplined, gifted Indian classical musician and if you listen through you'll get to hear some of her exquisite playing, alongside which she's also a very talented  yoga teacher - check out her website for Covid friendly affordable online sessions.  Personally I don't think she charges enough and I'm going to have a word with her about that so give her a call before I get to her.Happier New Year!  Freny Pavri yoga lessons can be found at https://classicalyogalondon.co.ukmailto:freny@classicalyogalondon.co.uk+4407587597228Title track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.     Outro track composed and performed by Freny Pavri.Audio Engineering by Sam Williams at  Right Royal Audio

What unfolded was a really energetic two hour Saturday morning conversation that could have gone on all day.  I'm uploading it here in its unedited form.  A big part of the inspiration for creating this podcast was the awareness that as a therapist my reach is limited by the very essence of what I do - confidentiality.  By choosing people who are willing to record and publish their stories and struggles it's my feeling that if just one listener is inspired or encouraged to speak out or make a change then it's all been worth it.This episode with Nadège tiptoes the line between podcast and therapy session in the most intimate way, exploring her mental break-through, multi generational family trauma and our different and similar relationship patterns, and whilst the Robert Crumb and Ma Anand Sheela episodes may appeal to a broader audience, to me this one is much more profound.Title track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.

If you've ever read anything about the Vietnam War you'll have heard the name Tim Page.  A near mythical, larger than life figure, known not just for his extraordinary art but also for his equally extraordinary, death defying personality and spirit.  Having driven overland at the age of 17 to Southeast Asia, Page is the man upon whom Dennis Hopper based his character in Apocalypse Now; the man who lived, perhaps too closely, by Robert Capa's adage 'if your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough'; the man who lost many of his closest friends (most notably Errol Flynn's son Sean) and part of his own brain in that nightmarish conflict, of whom Michael Herr wrote in his seminal book Dispatches as being 'the most extravagant of the wigged-out crazies running around Vietnam.'  Wounded four times, declared dead on at least one occasion, Page lived on despite his significant injuries both psychological and physical to document the likes of Hunter S. Thompson and Jim Morrison, working for Rolling Stone magazine, writing numerous books and featuring in several documentaries.I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to have Tim Page on this show - I urge you to forgive the Whatsapp sound quality as he talks with me from his home in Australia and take the time to soak up the wisdom, emotion and lifeforce of a true, living legend. Website - http://www.timpage.com.au/ Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Page_(photographer)      Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.co.uk/s00cnj/tim-page-photography/?autologin=trueInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/timpagephoto/?hl=enBooks - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tim-Page/e/B000AP5PVO?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_3&qid=1602537395&sr=1-3Title track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.

It's one thing to go to war with a gun in your hand, a whole other thing to go armed only with a camera or a notepad.  My own great grandfather was a stretcher bearer in WW1, and I've always been a huge admirer of those brave enough to go into battle with the purpose of helping others, and my next guest, James Brabazon, went with the intention of bringing the truth to those of us fortunate enough never to have to face such horrors.Name any war in the last 30 years and the chances are James covered it, perhaps most notably  in Liberia where he gave fellow war photographer Tim Hetherington his first chance to cover conflict.  James' poignant Oscar nominated homage to Tim - Which Way Is The Front Line From Here -  made following his friend's death in Libya is what first drew me to his work, and this episode covers many of his experiences in war, his relationship with Tim Hetherington, the impact of his work on his psyche, the influence our veteran grandfathers had on us both and his work as an author. It's not easy listening but it's never macho and always sensitive and it was an honour to spend some time with this rare man who truly embodies the word integrity, something that is no longer a given in journalism. His new thriller Arkhangel is out now.Twitter - https://twitter.com/james_brabazonWikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_BrabazonInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/james_brabazon/?hl=enBooks - https://www.amazon.co.uk/James-Brabazon/e/B004O8TF5U?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1&qid=1602776330&sr=8-1 IMDb - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1766370/Carry On Up The Khyber - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaUEwiz3MzMTitle track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.
