Sarito Carroll is an author and former member of the Osho Rajneesh movement. Born in 1969, she was brought to India at age nine by her mother, who had become a disciple of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (later known as Osho). What was intended as a brief visit turned into a permanent stay when her mother decided to join the ashram. At twelve, Sarito moved to Oregon, becoming one of the first settlers at Rajneeshpuram, a controversial commune built on the Big Muddy Ranch. She details her journey through the movement, the trauma she endured, and her path to healing. She is the author of In the Shadow of Enlightenment. What happens when a spiritual movement turns into a political force—and then spirals into one of the most bizarre cult stories in modern history?"Rajneeshpuram: The Cult of Rajneesh" takes you deep into the heart of a utopian dream gone dangerously wrong. In the early 1980s, a charismatic Indian guru named Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his devoted followers left India and built a sprawling commune in the Oregon desert. What began as a spiritual experiment quickly transformed into a surreal and shocking tale of power, control, bioterrorism, and international scandal.Episode show notes: www.3amfear.comNarrated by: Nikita FerraoInstagram: @3amfearpod@ncferraoauthorFind me on Youtube @ 3AM Fear PodcastFree thriller eBook: www.ncferrao.comPodcast Music: https://www.purple-planet.comEpisode Music: Music: Halloween Theme 1 by Alexander Nakarada (www.creatorchords.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/SUBSCRIBE us on YOUTUBE: https://bit.ly/3qumnPHFollow on Facebook: https://bit.ly/33RWRtPFollow on Instagram: https://bit.ly/2ImU2JVEmail me on nikita@3amfear.comSources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneeshpuramhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneesh_movementhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneeshhttps://www.neh.gov/humanities/2018/spring/feature/rajneeshpuram-was-more-utopia-desert-it-was-mirrorhttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/oct/12/abuse-rajneesh-cult-children-communeshttps://www.amazon.in/Rajneeshpuram-Inside-Bhagwan-Failed-American/dp/1641604727https://www.thecut.com/2018/04/9-rajneesh-followers-on-what-wild-wild-country-got-wrong.htmlhttps://www.britannica.com/topic/Rajneesh-movementhttps://www.reddit.com/r/WildWildCountry/comments/8asxhp/ama_for_former_rajneeshpuram_resident_i_lived/ https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/survivor-of-bhagwan-shree-rajneeshs-sex-cult-reveals-decades-of-abuse-6675679 https://people.com/crime/wild-wild-country-bhagwan-rajneesh-oregon-today/https://au.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/australian-cults-the-rajneesh-movement-14899/https://www.huffpost.com/entry/cult-wild-wild-country-netflix_n_5ab2b37de4b054d118df49c1https://www.oregonencyclopedia.org/articles/rajneeshees/https://www.oregonlive.com/tv/2018/03/netflix_documentary_on_rajnees.html

In part 1 of the story of Rajneeshpuram, you heard the story of Bhagwan Rajneesh's life and his move to the US to a sleepy little town outside of Oregon. You heard the story of his unprecedented town takeover and the all out culture war he now found himself in the middle of. By the year 1983, the residents of Rajneeshpuram and Antelope were armed against each other and more dangerous than ever before. As this culture war would unfold, crimes would unfold too, making the plot more sinister and macabre. And to hear this story unfold, welcome back to part 2 of the story of Osho. Dhyan Ji is a spiritual teacher, meditation coach and spiritual event organiser based in Cheshire, UK. In this deep and fascinating conversation, Dhyan begins by recounting a magical moment at the age of 6, where she suddenly embodied a complete sense of oneness with nature and the elements. This experience at such an early age set the tone for what was to come, as her family soon moved to Oregon in the US to live in Osho's infamous community. The story of what happened at Rajneeshpuram was captured in the Netflix documentary series Wild Wild Country, due to the controversy and chaos that surrounded what happened there. However, for 7 year old Dhyan, it was a time of beautiful memories, of freedom in nature and of deep daily spiritual practice through mantra and meditation. These early experiences were just the beginning of a life of many nuances. And many further profound experiences have shaped her understanding of a deeper truth. Her direct encounters with the space beyond the mind have not only expanded her awareness, but also informed the work she does and how she serves. Many topics are covered as the conversation unfolds, with Dhyan offering beautifully clear explanations and perspectives in her own unique way. She is extremely knowledgeable, and yet incredibly humble. A delicate, powerful soul for sure. Her advice for older women is simple, yet important, and often overlooked. In fact the power of who and what we really are is a theme that runs through the whole episode, with the twist and turn of each story told. Step inside the twisted world of the Rajneeshpuram cult with our latest episode, where an enigmatic Indian guru's quest for utopia leads to a scandalous slice of Oregon's history. We spotlight the tumultuous rise and fall of the Rajneeshpuram commune, starting from their head-scratching financial prowess in acquiring a vast ranch, to their audacious attempts at sculpting a city of their own. Our conversation isn't just a history lesson; it's a deep dive into a community's struggle with an ambitious cult's explosive impact, where salad bars became vectors for bioterrorism, and small-town America clashed with an influx of red-clad devotees. As we thread through the intricate legal battles that the Rajneeshpuram faced, we dissect the blurred lines between church, state, and the ownership of sacred space. The narrative gets personal as the residents of Antelope, Oregon, stand their ground against the commune's expansion, making their town a symbol of the broader conflict. We don't shy away from the darker side either, revealing how a utopian dream distorted into a narrative of crime, eventually branding the group with terrorist undertones. Our exploration goes beyond the headlines, correcting historical inaccuracies and examining the legal repercussions for the commune's most prominent figures, like Ma Anand Sheela. In our final musings, we reflect on the Rajneesh legacy, pondering the transformation of their ranch and mulling over the philosophical echoes of Rajneesh's "ten commandments." Our hosts grapple with defining the group—cult, criminal organization, or a misunderstood community? We also step into the wider realm of cults and terrorist organizations, humorously comparing their evolution to stages of Pokémon, while engaging in rigorous debate about international law, extradition, and the enigmatic Edward Snowden. Join us on this historical rollercoaster, and you might just find that the line between cult and terrorist is finer than you think.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Ever found yourself chuckling at the thought of an asteroid hurtling toward Earth? Well, buckle up for an episode that's as much about laughs as it is about the potential end of days. We're bringing you a whimsical yet insightful look into the myriad of apocalyptic scenarios that have haunted human imaginations from biblical prophecies to Y2K and beyond. Join us as we weave through the historical, the hysterical, and the downright bizarre beliefs that have led many to predict – erroneously, time and again – that the final curtain call is imminent.Harold Camping's prophecy flubs, the Mayan calendar misreadings, and David Mead's relentless doomsday recalculations; these are but a few of the tales you'll hear as we navigate the choppy waters of end-times forecasts. It's not all jest, though. We also cast a serious eye on actual scientific phenomena with the potential to reshape our world – from melting ice caps to celestial catastrophes. This episode is a mosaic of human reactions to the unknown, a patchwork of fear, fascination, and often, misguided fanaticism that has led many to peer a bit too intently into the abyss. As we wrap up our apocalyptic tour de force, we tease your brain with a look ahead to the enigma of Rajneeshpuram. It's a preface to a deeper dive into cult dynamics and the importance of skepticism that we'll be unraveling in episodes to come. So sit tight and keep your wits about you as we embark on this end-of-the-world escapade that promises to enlighten, entertain, and perhaps even offer an odd sense of comfort that the end, for now, is not quite nigh.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! In the last several years, a cult industrial complex has emerged to capitalize on Americans' fascination with groups such as Jonestown, the Manson Family, the Branch Davidians, and the Rajneeshpuram community in Wasco County, Ore., argues UC Berkeley professor Poulomi Saha. But in her highly sought-after class called Cults in Popular Culture, they emphasize that it's important to look beyond the sensational examples and recognize how cult-like behavior shows up in many facets of our lives and society. We'll talk with Saha about why some groups are labeled as cults, why people are drawn to them, and what cults reveal about spirituality and culture in America. Guests: Poulomi Saha, associate professor of English and co-director of the Program in Critical Theory, UC Berkeley. Saha teaches a course called Cults in Popular Culture.
Prior to our Mysticast conversation with John Hogue (http://www.hogueprophecy.com/) he informed us that ‘We'll talk briefly about me as a medium reading the world, my Nostradamus, and prophetic traditions study'. John, a man of many profound experiences regaled us for the whole show, sharing details of his life as a disciple of Osho spending 4 years living at Rajneeshpuram (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneeshpuram) ashram, and his lifelong fascination with Nostradamus, unveiling his prophecies and explaining how they play out in modern history. The most amazing prophecy of all time,in Debra's opinion - The Lords Declaration (https://www.aetherius.org/the-next-master/) which informs humanity of the coming of the next Spiritual Master to Earth was given to Dr. George King (Note 1) by a Lord of Karma on the 23rd November 1958. This astounding prophecy only received a passing mention due to John's enthused monologue coupled with our showtime limitations. To learn more about this incredible revelation we recommend you read the book Operation Starlight (https://www.aetherius.org/shop/the-holy-mountains-of-the-world/) and study the Mission which took Dr. George King on a worldwide journey climbing and acting as a channel for cosmic energies to be injected into18 Mountains making them Holy Spiritual Batteries for the use of all mankind for as long as this world exists. Note 1.Dr. George King (1919-1997) was a Master of yoga, trance medium and the author of many books on spirituality. He was contacted by an extraterrestrial intelligence known as “Aetherius” in 1954, and founded The Aetherius Society in 1955 – to promote and act upon the wisdom of highly evolved intelligences from other planets who communicated with, and through, him for over 40 years. Sonja Ulrich is a true survivor. Born in Germany, raised by a single mother in high society and at times move from town to town. Her mother joined the Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and become a Rajneeshee. Ulrich lived alone in Germany from ages 12 to 13, then at different European satellite communes for the next four years, all the while separated from her mother. When she turned 17, she was finally old enough for her chance to join Rajneeshpuram in Oregon. Despite swirling rumors of criminal activity and FBI infiltration of the site, Ulrich still wanted to go. As she arrived it was all falling apart and she found her self alone in the US. Ulrich enrolled at CSUDH in the early 2000s as a human services major, but then discovered her love of anthropology—the study of humans, and why they do what they do. Sonja graduated from CSUDH in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology and minor in bellydance history, then went on to earn her master's degree in anthropology from CSU Long Beach. She began teaching as an adjunct professor at CSUDH in 2015, and over the course of her academic career, has found “amazing healing” through her discipline. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matt-brown57/support
AFTER THE ELECTION, the new formerly homeless residents of Rajneeshpuram were the most pressing problem for Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his followers. They cost a lot of money to feed and house, and they started fights and made trouble. Rajneeshee leaders started out giving them bus tickets home, but that got very expensive very fast. After all, it had cost $1 million to bring them in by busloads; sending them home one or two at a time would be many times more than that. So finally, the Rajneeshees gave up and, herding them all aboard buses, simply hauled them to downtown Madras and dropped them off. Social-services agencies were forced to take on the task of getting them all home. The Salvation Army alone spent more than $100,000 taking care of them. We discuss the story of the founding of the intentional community of Rajneeshpuram in the backcountry of Oregon and the crazy events that followed.
IN THE COURTYARD at the Antelope Post Office today, there stands a large bronze plaque attached to the base of a flagpole. It reads, “Dedicated to those of this community who throughout the Rajneesh invasion and occupation of 1981-1985 remained, resisted and remembered.” Most visitors probably roll their eyes at this, thinking it a bit melodramatic. Invasion? Occupation? Puh-leeze, they might mutter. But the Rajneeshee takeover of Antelope was not an anodyne bureaucratic exercise. To those who lived through it, it really did feel like a foreign military power had rolled into their town and occupied it. It started out very stealthily. Several properties in the town were up for sale, and suddenly there were offers on all of them. Very ordinary-looking people signed the documents and took possession. Then some more very ordinary-looking people moved into the properties.... (Rajneeshpuram, Wasco County; 1980s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/23-08c.rajneeshpuramPart3of5.html)
ONCE UPON A time in India, a man lived. He would go on to become one of the most influential thinkers in new-age thought, but at this time — the early 1960s — he was merely a philosophy teacher, and one of thousands of gurus living and discoursing in that land of gurus. His name was Chandra Mohan Jain. But even then, just a few years out of graduate school, Jain was different. To call him charismatic would be a colossal understatement. By all accounts, this man could look into your eyes and speak to you for a half hour, and you would hurry home to sell all your earthly possessions to stay near him. He was charismatic enough that, by 1966, he was drawing big enough crowds and making fat enough cash on the speaking circuit to quit his teaching job at the University of Jabalpur, seven years after taking it, to focus on his “side hustle” as an independent guru. What they didn't know is that his "dynamic meditations" had little to do with meditation, and a lot more to do with physical and sexual assault. He was driven out of India and even greater mania ensued...This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Brace yourself as we navigate the unsettling world of charisma gone horrifically astray, spotlighting cult leader and master manipulator Bhagwan Rajneesh. We pull back the curtain on the paradox of followers reporting blissful experiences in his presence, as we lay bare the chilling methods employed for control and abuse.Delving into the eccentricities and often gauche excesses of Bhagwan Rajneesh, we illuminate the dark corners of his 'free love' philosophy. We recount stories of rampant abuse within the group and the horrifying tales of the victims who still fear facing repercussions for speaking out. We'll detail the saga of the small community - Antelope, Oregon, that was infiltrated and overpowered by Rajneesh's followers, as well as the alarming lengths taken in pursuit of power and control.Spoiler alert
Cults and cult leaders can be a disturbing topic to delve into, but it's crucial to expose these manipulative figures and their actions. Tough topics are always a little easier with a friend by your side and that's why we're joined by Ash from TSFU! This episode takes you on the first half of a dark and twisted journey, that of a notorious figure and his devoted followers. We strip away illusions, exposing the shocking truths, some omitted from the Netflix documentary covering the infamous group and the path of destruction that followed. The Bhagwan (or Rajneesh) proves a puzzling spiritual leader, rejecting traditional religious structures and amassing symbols of wealth. Rajneesh's story is also one of both fame and scandal marked by a number of allegations, and many acts of wrong doing. We'll explore the controversial habits, and often contradictory beliefs to begin to chip away at one of the key questions regarding the case, how did a man so contentious rise to power & influence? The Rajneeshees would leave an unmistakable trail of violence, abuse, and scandal in a small, rural community of Antelope, Oregon. Part 2 will cover how this group left an indelible mark on Wasco County as well as many surrounding areas of the Pacific Northwest. So, brace yourselves as we unravel the secrets of one of the most extreme cults in the Pacific Northwest.Exposing the dark underbelly of these spiritual gurus highlights the danger of manipulation and the seductive power of spirituality, underscoring the importance of awareness and vigilance in recognizing the signs of coercive groups, as well as the potentially destructive effects they can have on individuals and communities. Many cult leaders use spirituality as a weapon to control and exploit their followers. By understanding their tactics, we can better equip ourselves to recognize and combat such manipulation, preventing further victimization and ensuring a safer, more informed society.Today we shared a promo for the podcast They Don't Stay Dead!Come see us at: True Crime & Paranormal Podcast Festival!
The Rajneesh Movement was formed in India in the early 70's and after some trouble with the local authorities there, they moved their group to Oregon. While there they formed their own town called Rajneeshpuram and attempted to take over the nearby town of Antelope. This would lead to several group members being arrested for poisoning local salad bars with salmonella in which was the United States' first documented bio terror attack. They took it even further with the assassination plot of U.S. Attorney Charles H. Turner.Follow us on Twitter @OGMMPodcast or send us an email at bangdangpodcast@gmail.com!
Unlikely as it sounds, law-enforcement people who worked the case think it easily could have ended in a “bloody mess” if they had had to actually invade the commune to take the Bhagwan into custody. (Antelope, Wasco County; 1980s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/H1005e_Bhagwan4of4.html)
The Bhagwan's assistant, Ma Anand Sheela, set the tone for the commune's relations with the rest of Oregon — and that tone was not a friendly one. Soon the “Rajneeshies” were planning a political takeover ... (Antelope, Wasco County; 1980s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/H1005c_Bhagwan2of4.htm)
Bad health, a bad reputation and a big tax bill drove Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh out of India and into Central Oregon. Hilarity ensued ... hilarity, that is, in the original sense of the word. (Antelope, Wasco County; 1980s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/H1005b_Bhagwan1of4.htm)
A little different take on "true crime" this week in Bettina's story. She shares about the "religion-less teacher" who leads with his religious teachings...Rajneesh. He led by a vow of silence in his Rolls-Royce driving down the streets of the little city his followers created, Rajneeshpuram in Oregon. With his devout followers, laughing and crying meditations, sex, and the color red Rajneesh and his "right hand woman" Sheela, changed the little town of Antelope, Oregon forever! Beth takes her paranormal story to the coast of Oregon - to Heceta Head. Where there's the most picturesque bed and breakfast and Lighthouse that's "haunted" by a ghost named Rue? Welcome to our 2-parter episode on Ma Anand Sheela! A woman we all know very very well at this point, thanks to the Netflix documentary Wild Wild Country.Sheela was the former secretary and personal assistant of the Indian spiritual leader Rajneesh. Rajneesh, also called Osho, was a very popular leader who rallied almost 15,000 followers at the height of his influence. Sheela, as his right-hand woman, moved Rajneesh's commune from a small Ashram in Pune to a massive ranch in a small rural town in Oregon. The commune, which was known for its alternative ways of life, did not appeal to the local population, who felt they were taking over. And soon the American media and law enforcement also joined them in this understanding.Sheela, who was the sole spokeswoman for Rajneeshpuram, which was the name of the city -- Osho had taken an unofficial vow of silence around this time, and rarely ever made public appearances. So, Sheela was the public face of it all, and took all this pushback against the Rajneeshpuram commune very personally. So personally in fact, that she attempted to influence the local county elections, and get Rajneeshpuram more power at the state level, essentially committing voter fraud. And when that wasn't successful, she decided to poison a bunch of voters with salmonella bacteria, incapacitating almost 750 people in the country. And when that wasn't successful she attempted to assassinate the attorney general that was prosecuting her case. And when that wasn't successful… oh actually I think that's the entire list. For now.She does eventually go to prison for her outstanding work in the field of poisonings and contract killings. And then she gets out and makes hella money from the experience. So we are going to spend some time understanding WHO Sheela was. We have many many primary sources for this 2-parter episode, and we hope it does some justice to who Sheela was as a person! The story of Bhagwan Rajneesh, the Indian guru who established a movement/sex cult that tried to take over the state of Oregon, USA in the 1980s. We have 2 new cults to talk about: Jonestown and Rajneeshpuram. Then we chat about the psychology of cults.
News and documentary photographer Milt Ritter is a legend in Portland. You may never have seen him, but you've seen his work. He crafted video stories for more than 40 years—at KATU, KGW and OPB. Many of the best reporters and photographers in Portland learned by watching him. I did. He's also the nicest, caring and laid-back character you would ever want to ride in car with to Rajneeshpuram and back. We had a blast re-living some of the stories we did together. On the latest episode of The Yoga Show podcast, Lindsay chats with yoga teacher, mental health advocate, and actor Michelle Natalie Nunez. Michelle stars in Tyler Perry's Ruthless, a fictional series that takes a hard look inside a bizarre sex-crazed Rakadushi cult -- which has striking similarities to that of the Rajneeshpuram, led by the Indian guru Rajneesh (later known as Osho). Michelle's character was introduced this past Thursday, in the show's mid-season premiere. She joined us to talk about how she uses her practice to stay centered and grounded during grueling filming of complex, often triggering subject matter.
