The Compendium Podcast: An Assembly of Fascinating and Intriguing Things
In this episode of the Compendium, we uncover how the Sex Cult led by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, also known as the Osho movement, nearly took over Antelope, Oregon. We explore the rise of Rajneeshpuram, the Rajneeshee cult's transformation, and Ma Anand Sheela's pivotal role in the Rajneeshee plot that led to the biggest bioterror attack in U.S. history. We give you the Compendium, but if you want more, then check out these great resources:“Wild Wild Country” (2018) - Documentary series on Netflix:“Searching for Sheela” (2021) - Follow-up documentary on Netflix:“Building Utopia” - Podcast by Russell King:“What it was like to be a child in the commune” - Article in The Guardian“A journalist's recent experience at an Osho retreat” - Article in The GuardianMessage Kyle and AdamConnect with Us:
Step inside the twisted world of the Rajneeshpuram cult with our latest episode, where an enigmatic Indian guru's quest for utopia leads to a scandalous slice of Oregon's history. We spotlight the tumultuous rise and fall of the Rajneeshpuram commune, starting from their head-scratching financial prowess in acquiring a vast ranch, to their audacious attempts at sculpting a city of their own. Our conversation isn't just a history lesson; it's a deep dive into a community's struggle with an ambitious cult's explosive impact, where salad bars became vectors for bioterrorism, and small-town America clashed with an influx of red-clad devotees. As we thread through the intricate legal battles that the Rajneeshpuram faced, we dissect the blurred lines between church, state, and the ownership of sacred space. The narrative gets personal as the residents of Antelope, Oregon, stand their ground against the commune's expansion, making their town a symbol of the broader conflict. We don't shy away from the darker side either, revealing how a utopian dream distorted into a narrative of crime, eventually branding the group with terrorist undertones. Our exploration goes beyond the headlines, correcting historical inaccuracies and examining the legal repercussions for the commune's most prominent figures, like Ma Anand Sheela. In our final musings, we reflect on the Rajneesh legacy, pondering the transformation of their ranch and mulling over the philosophical echoes of Rajneesh's "ten commandments." Our hosts grapple with defining the group—cult, criminal organization, or a misunderstood community? We also step into the wider realm of cults and terrorist organizations, humorously comparing their evolution to stages of Pokémon, while engaging in rigorous debate about international law, extradition, and the enigmatic Edward Snowden. Join us on this historical rollercoaster, and you might just find that the line between cult and terrorist is finer than you think.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! In this week's episode, we look at the bioterrorism attack committed by the Rajneeshees.
When in 1984 751 people in The Dalles, Oregon, suddenly contracted salmonella after eating at a number of salad bars, the authorities put it down to poor hygiene of the food handlers, despite local residents suspecting the involvement of the Rajneeshees, a cult of 7000 people who had overtaken a nearby ranch. This is the tale of everything that happened before and after.
Sonja Ulrich is a true survivor. Born in Germany, raised by a single mother in high society and at times move from town to town. Her mother joined the Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and become a Rajneeshee. Ulrich lived alone in Germany from ages 12 to 13, then at different European satellite communes for the next four years, all the while separated from her mother. When she turned 17, she was finally old enough for her chance to join Rajneeshpuram in Oregon. Despite swirling rumors of criminal activity and FBI infiltration of the site, Ulrich still wanted to go. As she arrived it was all falling apart and she found her self alone in the US. Ulrich enrolled at CSUDH in the early 2000s as a human services major, but then discovered her love of anthropology—the study of humans, and why they do what they do. Sonja graduated from CSUDH in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology and minor in bellydance history, then went on to earn her master's degree in anthropology from CSU Long Beach. She began teaching as an adjunct professor at CSUDH in 2015, and over the course of her academic career, has found “amazing healing” through her discipline. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matt-brown57/support
AFTER THE ELECTION, the new formerly homeless residents of Rajneeshpuram were the most pressing problem for Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his followers. They cost a lot of money to feed and house, and they started fights and made trouble. Rajneeshee leaders started out giving them bus tickets home, but that got very expensive very fast. After all, it had cost $1 million to bring them in by busloads; sending them home one or two at a time would be many times more than that. So finally, the Rajneeshees gave up and, herding them all aboard buses, simply hauled them to downtown Madras and dropped them off. Social-services agencies were forced to take on the task of getting them all home. The Salvation Army alone spent more than $100,000 taking care of them. IN THE COURTYARD at the Antelope Post Office today, there stands a large bronze plaque attached to the base of a flagpole. It reads, “Dedicated to those of this community who throughout the Rajneesh invasion and occupation of 1981-1985 remained, resisted and remembered.” Most visitors probably roll their eyes at this, thinking it a bit melodramatic. Invasion? Occupation? Puh-leeze, they might mutter. But the Rajneeshee takeover of Antelope was not an anodyne bureaucratic exercise. To those who lived through it, it really did feel like a foreign military power had rolled into their town and occupied it. It started out very stealthily. Several properties in the town were up for sale, and suddenly there were offers on all of them. Very ordinary-looking people signed the documents and took possession. Then some more very ordinary-looking people moved into the properties.... (Rajneeshpuram, Wasco County; 1980s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/23-08c.rajneeshpuramPart3of5.html)
Jim Moore is a well-known political commentator and the Director of Political Outreach for the Tom McCall Center for Civic Engagement at Pacific University. Moore also recently completed a soon-to-be released biography of Vic Atiyeh, the 32nd Governor of Oregon. This episode centers on Atiyeh's tenure as Governor and some of the lasting impacts of his administration. We cover how he managed through crisis (including the largest bioterrorism attack in US history and the Rajneeshee crisis in Wasco County) and the ways his legacy are still felt today. Moore helps us think through the similarities and differences between our current political environment (and current Governor) with Atiyeh and his tenure. Atiyeh was a special man who led Oregon during a challenging and fascinating period of history.

My guest is epidemiologist and biosecurity expert, Raina MacIntyre. Dr MacIntyre is Head of the Biosecurity Program at the Kirby Institute, and Professor of Global Biosecurity at UNSW. Today we discuss her latest book DARK WINTER: An insider's guide to Pandemics and biosecurity. We discuss a series of unnatural outbreaks [lab leaks or deliberate misuse] that have occurred over the past 70 years: Sverdlovsk anthrax release, Rajneeshee bioterror attacks, Amerithrax attacks, and others... Raina breaks down the patterns and features they have in common. We discuss the highly unusual features of the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa and the 2019 COVID-19 outbreak that raise questions about a possible unnatural origin of these outbreaks. In every case, the outbreak was initially deemed a natural occurrence by scientists, but later [often many years later] were determined to have had an unnatural origin. Common features in these cases are denial, a cover-up, silence, and often an “information war” led by scientists to control the narrative. The conclusions are inescapable and unsettling: When it comes to investigating an unusual outbreak, we cannot leave the scientists in charge of the investigation. And second, in an era of widely available synthetic biology, accelerated natural selection, and covert DUROC, we face an existential threat from bioweapons of mass destruction. The odds have already shifted dramatically in favor of any outbreak being due to a lab leak or deliberate misuse rather than due to a natural occurrence.
By Roberta Lippi | After years of impositions and dramatic acceptance of a world totally out of reality, Deeksha realizes how fundamental her role was in the birth, growth and fall of the sannyasin world. You may have heard of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his followers, commonly known as Rajneeshees or sannyasins, from the incredibly popular Netflix documentary “Wild, Wild Country.” Well in today's episode we speak with a former follower of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh cult to get a better understanding of how this society functioned, what it was like to live in normal society as a member of the cult, and what it was like on the famous Oregon ranch. With our guest, Annie (who has asked to remain anonymous but showed her mala that she wore during her time as a Rajneshee to prove her affiliation with the cult), we find out how she first find out about Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and the Rajneeshees, and what inspired her to join their cult, where she goes into great detail about how she found them when she was 16 at an Alcoholics Anonymous event. She also shares why life as a Rajneeshee was difficult off the ranch in normal society, as society often treated them with a mixture of suspicion, curiosity, and fear. In fact, she was fired from all of her jobs due to her membership in the cult, but she also explains how she saw this as a positive, “a trial by fire” as she claims. Annie also goes into detail about what it was like visiting the ranch in 1983, when, she believes, much of the footage used in the documentary was filmed. She talks about the important role meditation played in being a Rajneeshee and what a normal day was like on the ranch. She also shares her thoughts on how accurate the documentary was, how close she came to meeting Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, and finally, how she left the cult in the end. Overall, Annie explains why she doesn't see the following as a religion or cult, but instead as a community and how this community had such an overall, lasting positive experience in her life.
In September of 1984, at least 751 people got violently sick in The Dalles, Oregon. At first, no one in the town could figure out why. Those sickened had all eaten at ten different restaurants in the area, but local health officials couldn't find a common food that may have caused their illness. A year later, the public learned the sinister reason the town fell ill. Then we dive into the case of April and Michael Holton. Less than 15 minutes after a deputy left the home of the former mayor, gunshots went off, killing both Michael and his estranged wife, April, in 2016. At first, the scene looks like a murder-suicide. But when facts don't start lining up, the police focus the investigation on an unlikely suspect.Sources:Forensic Files Season 7, Episode 16 “Bio-Attack”https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2014/06/a-strange-but-true-tale-of-voter-fraud-and-bioterrorism/372445/https://www.nydailynews.com/news/justice-story/guru-poison-bioterrorrists-spread-salmonella-oregon-article-1.1373864Dateline – 11 Minuteshttps://www.oxygen.com/dateline-secrets-uncovered/crime-news/did-madison-holton-kill-parents-michael-and-aprilhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6940203/19-year-old-accused-killing-parents-breaks-silence.htmlhttps://heavy.com/news/2019/04/jesse-madison-holton/Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/badsign)

In the early 80's an Indian spiritual leader and his followers moved in near a tiny Oregon town. It didn't take long for them to start causing problems, and quickly devolved into debauchery that included assassination attempts, murder of a member, and the first bioterror attack in US history. Author Lily Dunn’s father joined Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh’s movement about the same time that And Then Everything Changed host Ronit Plank’s mother followed him to India. They both grew up in the shadow of Bhagwan (also known at Osho, the guru at the center of Netflix’s docuseries Wild Wild Country), each with a parent more devoted to his teachings and the lifestyle he extolled than to them. Lily shares some of what she witnessed at the Rajneeshee house she visited on weekends and she and Ronit discuss how their relationships with their father and mother respectively irrevocably changed when they chose freedom over parenting. In this special episode to mark the release of Ronit's memoir When She Comes Back and Lily's forthcoming memoir, the authors discuss their books, writing about family, and how watching Wild Wild Country which became a media sensation affected them. [Intro: 12:40] In this episode, I speak with sociologist Milton Bennett, director of the Intercultural Development Research Institute, and the creator of the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (also known as the “Bennett Scale”). I was introduced to Milton and his work by journalist Dahr Jamail, after a private discussion Dahr and I had about the dynamics of cults and "culting" within certain political groups, in particular between President Donald Trump and his base of supporters, as explored in Dahr's interview with Milton in the Truthout article 'Is There a Cult of Trump?' What is a cult in the literal sense, and what is "culting"? As can be observed in the hardcore base of support for leaders such as Donald Trump, and other examples Milton is very familiar with, like the Rajneeshee cult in Oregon in the 1980's (explored in the Netflix documentary Wild Wild Country), "culting" is a very specific form indoctrination, often with a central figure that is actively, whether consciously or not, building an unquestioning base of followers. The first step in the “culting” process is to aggressively recruit; the second is control, which “includes specifically controlling the boundaries of the group”; the third step is coercion — “the cult leader always uses the limitation of alternatives as a strategy”; generate a conversion process — “which is a fast, transformative experience, not a long-term development. It is like the scales fall from your eyes.”*; finally, the maintaince of the group after this conversion process is instrumental. In the exploration of this topic with Milton, we inevitably lead into his broader work in defining the development of intercultural sensitivity and communication, as expressed in the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS). As Milton explains, American society and culture is not, in a general sense, progressing toward intercultural understanding and sensitivity at all, and is in fact moving backwards on the scale, away from the third step of “minimization of difference” (which we have been stuck on, as Milton says) and toward step two and ultimately toward step one — “the denial of difference.” Trump, like all leaders that have engaged in this process, take advantage of the historical and sociological conditions of the societies in which they rise to prominence within, particularly ones that are in a state of crisis, ideologically or otherwise. Professor Milton J. Bennett is the director of the Intercultural Development Research Institute, and is the creator of the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity. Milton is an adjunct professor of sociology at the University of Milano Bicocca in Italy. He holds a Ph.D. in intercultural communication and sociology and a Masters in psycholinguistics. *Source: http://bit.ly/CultOfTrump Episode Notes: - Read Milton’s interview with journalist Dahr Jamail in Truthout: http://bit.ly/CultOfTrump - Learn more about Milton’s work at the Intercultural Development Research Institute website: https://www.idrinstitute.org - The songs featured in this episode are “Specters of the Future,” “Variations,” and “Être” by Nicolas Jaar from the album Space Is Only Noise. It’s the third installment of our Cults series and this week we’re seeing red! Travel with us to the Big Muddy Ranch in Oregon and learn about the Rajneeshee movement of the early 1980’s. Made popular by the Netflix documentary series Wild, Wild Country, they’re not quite as sinister as some of other cults we’ll cover in this series, but a freaky deaky sex cult nonetheless. Hippies and semi-automatic weapons DO NOT MIX WELL in the small town of Antelope, causing friction between the Rajneeshees and the old crotchety town folk. As always, we’ll compare the actual definition of a cult with the practices and antics of the Sannyasins and see where we land. It’s about to get Wild! **we do not own the music used in this episode and no copyright infringement is intended** --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/notreligiouspod/message
It’s the holiday season in Rajneeshpuram! We’ll explore the Rajneeshees’ three major holidays and see how they were celebrated during Bhagwan's first year in America. This culminates in the First World Festival in July 1982, which attracted 5,000 visitors and helped lay the foundation for the city of Rajneeshpuram. We’ll close by hearing Bhagwan’s thoughts on Santa Claus.

This week, we discuss the near-endless outpouring of videos of white people freaking out on people of color in public. We’ll also put to rest the needless adulation for ailing Republican Senator John McCain, the warmongering quote-on-quote maverick who brought us Sarah Palin. In pop culture, we’ll start off wacky and New Age-y with a discussion of Netflix’s Rajneeshee documentary Wild Wild Country, then we’ll get cynical as hell talking about Obama’s upcoming Netflix content and the unmitigated disaster that is the Solo movie. The new Netflix documentary “Wild, Wild Country” delves into the strange world of the Rajneeshees, a religious group that moved to Oregon in the 1980s and clashed with local townspeople. The documentary reveals plenty about those tensions, but left us hungry for more detail about everyday life at the Rajneeshee Ranch. Writer Melissa Locker tells us about the group’s cookbook, Zorba the Buddha. Then Maddie talks to chef and restaurant owner Tanya Holland about the challenges of opening a restaurant as a black woman. Bonus: Tanya plays Gross or Tasty—drawing from her time as a judge on Iron Chef.
