Bonus 8 - Dr. Douglas Brouwer's journey from Western Michigan to the world and back again offers profound insights into how travel shapes our spiritual lives and understanding of home. After spending 40 years serving as a Presbyterian pastor around the globe, Doug's adventures took him from maximum security prisons in Philadelphia to a church in Zurich, Switzerland, where he learned German at age 60. His travels weren't merely about seeing new places but about finding deeper meaning and connection with humanity. The conversation explores Doug's most profound travel experiences, including walking 500 miles along the Camino de Santiago at retirement age. Despite averaging 17 miles daily for 28 days with everything on his back, it was the first night—stranded on a mountainside between France and Spain—that taught him the most powerful lesson about his own limitations. Yet he persevered, meeting fellow pilgrims from around the world who, regardless of religious affiliation, participated in the ancient spiritual rituals along the path. What makes this episode particularly moving is Doug's reflection on the true purpose of all our wandering. After visiting 48 states and countless countries, writing a book called "The Traveler's Path," and experiencing diverse cultures, he found that his heart's true home was back near Lake Michigan where he began. "All of this moving around, all of the searching that people do, I think, is a search for home," he shares with emotion. "Where is it that I belong?"Whether you're planning your next adventure or questioning the meaning of your travels, this conversation will challenge your perspective on what makes journeys worthwhile. Visit LandPirate.com to get your gear that has you, the adventurer, in mind. After a number of off the record talks with high ranking sources in Israel, both Gadi and Mike are under the impression that the talks of larger goals are sincere. In that case we are probably witnessing a lull, no more, until President Trump takes office. Meanwhile, Netanyahu's domestic enemies are going into overdrive, with two new surprising investigations: one against the chief of Israel's Prison Service, and one against the chief of Israel's Police in Judea and Samaria. The problem seems to be this: they did what Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, told them to.

Cúigear príosúnach fós san ospidéal i bPort Laoise. Prison officers in the country's prisons are more alert than usual since at least eleven prisoners fell very ill in Portlaoise Prison yesterday afternoon after taking an overdose of some drug. Tá oifigigh phríosúin i bpríosúin na tíre airdealleach thar mar is gnách ó buaileadh an-tinn aon phríosúnach déag ar a laghad i bPríosún Phort Laoise tráthnóna inné tar éis dóibh ródháileog de dhruga éigin a thógáil. As soon as the attention of prison officials was drawn to the emergency, ten prisoners were taken to the local hospital on bail. A luaithe a tarraingíodh aird na n-oifigeach príosúin ar an éigeandáil, tugadh deichniúr príosúnach chun an ospidéil áitiúil faoi théirim. Afterwards, however, more prisoners fell ill and at least one of them was also taken to hospital. Ina dhiaidh sin, áfach, buaileadh tinn tuilleadh príosúnach agus tugadh duine acu ar a laghad chun an ospidéil chomh maith. Three of the eleven are said to be seriously ill and in intensive care. Deirtear go bhfuil triúr den aon duine dhéag an-dona tinn agus faoi dhianchúram. Six recovered and have since been returned to prison. Tháinig biseach ar sheisear agus tá siad tugtha ar ais chun an phríosúin ó shin. The other two are said to be in a stable condition in hospital. Deirtear go bhfuil bail sheasmhach san ospidéal ar an mbeirt eile. Three weeks ago, the Irish Prison Service warned prisoners about the drug nits and the dangers associated with it. Trí seachtaine ó shin, thug Seirbhís Phríosúin na hÉireann foláireamh do phríosúnaigh faoin druga níotáisín agus faoin gcontúirt a bhaineann leis. Nitasine is an opiate drug that slows the heart rate and breathing rate. Druga ópóideach is ea níotáisín a mhoillíonn an ráta croí agus an ráta análaithe. The Prison Service says they are working in conjunction with the Health Service Executive and have obtained an extra supply of the medication naloxone in case it is needed. Deir an tSeirbhís Phríosúin go bhfuil siad ag obair i gcomhar le Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte agus go bhfuil soláthar breise den chógas leighis nalocsón faighte acu ar fhaitíos go mbeadh sé ag teastáil. Naloxone can instantly reverse the damage caused by nitrite and other drugs and save people from death. Is féidir le nalocsón an díobháil a dhéanann níotáisín agus drugaí eile a chealú ar an bpointe agus daoine a thógáil ón mbás. The Irish Trust for the Reform of the Criminal System is a prisoners' rights organization and they believe that the overcrowding of people in the country's prisons is contributing to the drug problem in them. Eagraíocht cearta príosúnach is ea Iontaobhas na hÉireann um Athchóiriú an Chórais Choiriúil agus dar leo go bhfuil an plódú daoine i bpríosúin na tíre ag cur le fadhb na ndrugaí iontu. Speaking on RTÉ today, the executive director of the organization Saoirse Brady said that there were 5,017 people in various prisons in the State yesterday and that is 12% more than the number of people that have room for them. Ag labhairt di ar RTÉ inniu, dúirt stiúrthóir feidhmiúcháin na heagraíochta Saoirse Brady go raibh 5,017 duine i bpríosúin éagsúla sa Stát inné agus gurb in 12 faoin gcéad níos mó ná an líon daoine a bhfuil áit iontu dóibh. Saoirse Brady also pointed out that many of the people who are put in prison are drug addicts but they often do not get the support they need while in detention. Thug Saoirse Brady le fios freisin gur andúiligh drugaí go leor de na daoine a chuirtear i bpríosúin ach gur minic nach bhfaigheann siad an tacaíocht atá de dhíth orthu agus iad faoi choinneáil. This week's guest on the Horticulture Week Podcast is Glendale head of development, estate services, Deric Newman,The podcast was recorded shortly after the Perennial Quiz in February. HortWeek editor Matt Appleby and Deric, both on the 'Horticulture Geeks' team, discuss how they fared.Deric talks about his role and about Glendale's current business focus as it seeks to diversify and expand its commercial offering. He discusses the differences between private and council work in terms of client expectations and time pressure and how much competition Glendale faces in the sector. As the firm looks to expand its commercial business (it currently accounts for 10% of Glendale's revenue) Deric talks about the challenges of staffing and attracting people into the landscape maintenance and contracting sector. This brings him to the work Glendale is doing with His Majesty's Prison Service as part of the New Futures Network initiative "which is basically around trying to get together employers and ex-offenders in order to offer employment on release. What is known is that if a prisoner leaves prison and they have accommodation and they have employment, the chances or the likelihood of them re -offending reduces significantly."So it seemed fairly straightforward to us at Glendale that it was the right thing to do...It's not our place to judge these people about why they've been in prison. That's been done... They've done their time. They are now out of prison as an ex-offender and just a member of society. And if we want our society to be improved, which is sort of what Glendale's about )you know, we're about improving green spaces that we live in and enjoy) then it's right that we're doing these sorts of things for members of society."The other thing, commercially, what was appealing about it is that the prison population is a ready supplier of labour. Most of the people coming out find themselves in need of a job and they actually get really good experience."He talks about his background and the formative role played by his father who set up Civic Trees in the 1960s which was part of the post-war drive to plant trees and who was an innovator who developed pioneering technology and techniques to enable trees to be moved, rather than cut down.Deric retains a strong connection to trees to this day. He talks about his ongoing interest in tree nurseries and reveals, as all our podcast guests do, his Desert Island Plant. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

For many of the children and young people Jimmy Savile offended against, they were finally heard - but, as former Detective Mark Williams-Thomas explains, justice will never be served against the now dead Savile, and the impact of his behaviour will never leave the victim survivors he assaulted.  Hear the story of how Mark constructed and investigated the documentary that helped exposed Saville, and hear host Brent Sanders unpack Mark's career and the incredible story of Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy. Terror suspect Daniel Khalife's escape from HMP Wandsworth – believed to be by strapping himself underneath a delivery lorry - led to a police manhunt involving all 43 forces in England and Wales. The 21-year-old ex-soldier was on remand charged with collecting information which might be useful to an enemy, understood to be Iran. The justice secretary, Alex Chalk, has told MPs that an independent investigation will take place, while suggestions have been made that cuts to the Prison Service and overcrowded conditions at Wandsworth prison are partly to blame. But what does his escape tell us about the state of the prison system in England? On the Sky News Daily, host Niall Paterson speaks to David Shipley, a former inmate at HMP Wandsworth, and Professor John Podmore, an ex-prison governor and inspector, about what's wrong with Wandsworth prison and others across the country? Saj Zafar is a Leadership Trainer, Motivational Speaker, Author and an accredited Personal and Professional Development Coach. She is also the founder of 'Institute for Change', a specialist training and coaching consultancy which primarily focuses on helping organisations create inclusive cultures. Having spent a lifetime overcoming barriers, defying many gender roles and stereotypes, and achieving many firsts, Saj delivers her training and coaching programs to a diverse range of organisations, specialising in helping and supporting senior leaders to get the best out of their workforce. Qualifying in Social Work and graduating in Forensic Psychology, it is no surprise that at the tender age of 24 Saj ended up in prison. One of her ‘claims to fame' is being the first and youngest Asian female to join the Prison Service as a Prison Governor. Not surprisingly, the very things that helped catapult her to success (young, Asian and female), became her challenges as she strived to thrive in a predominantly white male environment. Her 'can do' mind set, attitude, and resilience, led her to spend the next 20 years working in challenging areas in both local and central government. Setting up the first therapeutic unit for young sex offenders in the UK, leading on transformational change programs in failing institutions, working for the Prison and Probation Ombudsman, Prison Reform, and Public Protection, led her to build an exemplary reputation in strategic leadership working effectively with senior leadership teams, including Ministers and senior officials in both local and central governments. It is these credentials that led to her appointment as the Ministerial Engagement Lead for Grenfell and subsequently the Wind Rush Program. She is a renowned authority in Leadership Development & Organisational Change. She has a professional credibility with a proven track record of leading, shaping and influencing large, complex change programmes within regulated environments. It is her ability to create safe psychological spaces and have candid and courageous conversations, that has made her the ‘go to' person for gender and race equality. Saj uses her experiences and weaves these into her training/coaching/mentoring to make learning interesting, impactful and of value for the participants. Her own experience of working in ‘all male' environments as the only female leader and managing those relationships, regardless of the treatment she received, has made her one of the leaders in helping organisations change the demographics of the top tier.In this episode, Saj and I chat about:Her leadership roles Her leadership style Her leadership journey The leaders that helped her rise The challenges she faced on her journey How she navigated those challenges How she thinks you can become a strong and kind leader Her ‘take home' leadership messages for the listeners, and What she is currently excited to be working on.Saj can be found and/or contacted via the following online platform addresses:https://www.instituteforchange.nethttps://www.leadhershipacademy.co.ukhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/saj-zafar/Please reach out to Dr Harrison for individual coaching and/or organisational training via dr.adam@coachingmentoringdoctors.com.His web address and social media profile links / handles include:www.dradamharrison.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/dradamharrison/www.youtube.com/c/DrAdamPhysicianCoachhttps://www.facebook.com/coachingmentoringdoctors/https://www.instagram.com/dradamharrison/https://www.tiktok.com/@physiciancoachHe has co-written a new online course...

Welcome to Episode 73 of the Blue Light Leavers Podcast Now, what we wanted to do was give you a bit of an insight into the type of live interviews we do within The Academy from Blue Light Leavers. The Academy is a no tie in, really low fee monthly membership, and we have loads of guest speakers, including lots of cops that have moved into new roles and we talk about why and how they've gone about doing it. We also have conversations with CV and LinkedIn experts and subject matter experts from different organisations, recruiters and all sorts and I really wanted to give you just an insight into the type of calls that we do, that are live Q and A type sessions within The Academy. So this is a bit different to our usual podcast episode. Laura McKeeman is a former police officer, who left policing after training through our collaboration with WithYouWithMe and is now working as a consultant in Leonardo, for WYWM. WithYouWithMe are an organisation that were previously only open to Military Leavers, but are now open to Blue Light Leavers and they offer you a complete career path into the tech industry, that includes placements and their training is completely free. This was an opportunity for The Academy Members to join the call and to listen to Laura's story, and then an opportunity to ask her some questions at the end, which you'll hear. I really hope you enjoy this, and like I said, I just wanted to give you a bit of a taster as to the type of calls and the type of things that we do within The Academy that are very different from the normal Blue Light Leavers group. Now, within this episode, we talk about what she was doing in her career in the police, and we talk about why she left and how she felt about leaving as well, and we talk about her experience of the training, and the type of training that she did with WithYouWithMe and her last day in the police service and we talk about the new environment and then she's asked a couple of questions from Academy members at the end. I really hope you enjoy this, and like I say, if you want to join us in The Academy, then you can just go to www.bluelightleavers.com, click on Work With Me, and you'll see The Academy drop down from there. Welcome to episode 68 of the Blue Light Leavers Podcast Today, I've got the absolute pleasure of talking with Gareth Keyte. Gareth is a former Police Officer and Royal Marine Commando, and in this episode he talks us through his policing career where he reached the rank of Detective Inspector. Whilst serving, Gareth had identified a particular process within his organisation that resulted in him having to report the issue to, and subsequently challenge a senior officer, who then made it his mission to do all he could to make Gareth's life as difficult as possible, in every possible way. It's an extraordinary and heart breaking story, and Gareth goes on to explain the impact on his mental health and the signs and symptoms that manifested themselves, as a result of the behaviour of the individual and the lack of support of the organisation. This resulted in him having to leave on ill-health retirement after 21 years service, and he talks us through his struggle with the loss of identity, his ongoing recovery and treatment, and how he's since gone on to re-train and create Oxygen Coaching Company in partnership with his wife, Dawn. He talks about the importance of being proactive in supporting your own mental health, and he talks about the importance of not relying on an overwhelmed organisation to provide the right support and how damaging the 'big boys don't cry' culture is. He also shows us that there really is life after policing and that it's a mindset shift, by learning to reject 'learned helplessness.' We also go on to talk about reactive versus proactive mental health support and what can and should be in place? This is an extraordinary interview and Gareth is so honest and open about his struggles and the challenges he's had, but it's so inspiring and he's gone on to do some amazing things, including being asked to deliver a keynote speech by senior police leaders, to the National Police Chiefs' Council and the Disabled Police Association about his experience and challenging and changing the toxic culture in policing. In this episode I'm talking with Jo Morris. Jo is a Blue Light Leavers community member and also a member of The Academy and she's a real success story. In the last episode we spoke to Jo, Jules and James with regards to our amazing collaboration with FDM Group and Jo is a former police officer who has been through their selection process and successfully passed the training, and she's recently started a fantastic new role consulting in a Project Manager role within the Finance sector. We talk through her policing experience and reasons for leaving, and she's incredibly open and honest about what happened. We talk about how she felt and the impact the misconduct process had on her, and we talked through the first call that we had and what happened next. She talks us through the whole FDM application process that she went through and how she felt when she got that call to say she'd been successful in the application process and assessment day, and then we go through the training in detail and how intense it was and the challenges that she felt were part of that process. We talk about her placement and I really do think she's got an incredibly exciting future ahead of her. This is a brilliant interview and I'm incredibly grateful to her for being so honest and open. If you're thinking of leaving policing or other emergency service and unsure of your options, your transferable skills, the careers you can move to, the impact on your mental health, losing your identity, how to write a CV or use LinkedIn, then this event is for you. It belongs to the people”.If you want to protect this hugely important part of our revolutionary history with its many exceptional links to the dramatic events in Dublin at Easter 1916 then support the Urgent Public Meeting being held by the Moore Street Preservation Trust in Liberty Hall, Dublin on the 23 February. Belfast film maker Seán Murray will produce a short documentary with Oscar nominated actor Stephen Rea to be launched in the Urgent Public Meeting.Prison BooksNews that some books have been banned by the Prison Service in the North comes as no surprise. The books are Joe Cahill A life in the IRA. Joe would be amused. Dessie; The life and Legacy of Volunteer Dessie Grew, and No Greater Love. The Memoirs of Seamus Kearney. The banning of these books is stupid. No accident that they are written by or about republicans. Former prisoner and hungerstriker Pat Sheehan MLA has written to the prison authorities seeking the unbanning of these titles.
