Memo to you: Pop Screen is back for 2024 and we're covering one of the wildest, most controversial and most ambitious rock movies of the 1970s. Starring Mick Jagger among a motley cast of models, gangsters, boxers and one father of a national embarrassment, Performance saw Nicolas Roeg and Donald Cammell join forces for a joint debut like no other. On this episode, Rob and Graham reunite to talk about the film's turbulent production, its difficult journey into a form Warner Brothers - who thought this was going to be like A Hard Day's Night - found acceptable, and the short but eventful life of the mysterious Donald Cammell. If you want to hear us talk more about his co-director, Rob and Graham have also covered The Man Who Fell to Earth. If you want us to talk more about Mick Jagger, well... ...there's an exclusive bonus episode of this podcast concerning Tony Richardson's Ned Kelly coming out on our Patreon very soon, where it'll join a galaxy of quality content: the franchise-reassessing podcast From the Video Aisle is about to dive into the Mr. Vampire series, our X-Files and Red Dwarf reviews are well into the golden age of those shows, and there's also the movie miscellany podcast Last Night... at the end of the month. This isn't even close to the limit of what we do: check Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to find out more. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pop-screen/message

William Ramsey & Hans Utter return to Wake the Dead to team up & break down the 1970 film titled 'Performance' by Donald Cammell. This is a continuation down the rabbit hole we started on with Brett Carollo & Hans Utter (WTD ep.94 'Altamont Pie'). In that episode we discussed the satanification of culture following the Altamont sacrificial killing in Dec. 1969. The 'snuff film' released the following year titled 'Gimme Shelter' was released at the same time as the film 'Performance' starring Mick Jagger. This intentional release of the films is evidence of the greater working being conducted by the dark occultists steering society. Once the lid was cracked, another rabbit hole appeared with lots of interesting nuggets to think about. William has compiled biographical information about the director, Donald Cammell which can be seen in his documentary titled 'Occult Hollywood vol. 2' which tracks the influence of Aleister Crowley across Hollywood. It's about a mystery that takes many years to solve, and features an ending that will literally have you gasping out loud, maybe all the way through the credits. COMING ATTRACTIONS: From South America we go to Europe, for a look at a couple of movies where peoples' minds and personalities are somehow morphed into something else. Doris Lessing's uncategorizable oeuvre reached strange new heights in 1988 with the publication of her short novel The Fifth Child. The story couldn't be simpler. In the England of the 1970s, a couple determined to live out a dream that many of their generation have rejected -- the big family in the old house with the pretty garden -- conceive a child that may or may not be human. From that moment on, the boy, their fifth, becomes the alien force that will tear their dream to pieces. Profoundly ambiguous and unsettling, The Fifth Child is a weird novel that raises questions about parenthood, family, and the impenetrable depths of nature. Demon Seed's story is set 20 years in the future, Proteus IV is a new, highly advanced computer that scientists at the ICON Institute (International Control Corporation) spent eight years constructing as a massively powerful synthetic version of the organic human brain, hoping to use it for the financial success of the conglomerate funding the project. Proteus is capable of absorbing all human knowledge, though without an understanding of our psychological, sociological, moral, or ethical motivations. Its creator, Dr. Alex Harris (Fritz Weaver), is beyond pleased when Proteus finds a cure for leukemia within hours of his "birth.". He's later alarmed when Proteus begins to question human motivations toward exploiting natural resources and wants to further study humankind independently through gaining access to additional terminal outlets. Harris refuses and tries to shut down all avenues for his powerful computer system to grow, except one  - the one controlling his fully automated home. Proteus finds a way to take over the test model Environmod, Harris's voice-activated household computer system which handles home security (including a closed-circuit TV system), housekeeping, food supply and preparation, lights, heat, chores, and a robotic wheelchair unit with a mechanical arm. Alex's recently separated psychologist wife Susan (Julie Christie) is in the house during the takeover and grows unnerved at the personality changes in the AI system. Proteus then imprisons Susan within the home and begins attempting to gain more knowledge of humanity by having a child with her to continue its work beyond the day the scientists inevitably unplug it. In schockierend entspannter Atmosphäre nehmen Patrick und sein Gast Christian Höntzsch einen zu Unrecht vergessenen Thriller auseinander, der sich nicht so recht zwischen Arthouse und Exploitation entscheiden kann. Gut so!

The music video:  "What had been a liberating possibility for visual artists working in film, to bring their work towards a wider audience, without the pressure of narrative, without the necessity to tell stories, has become an absolutely fixed promo for the consumerism aimed at the youth market". So says Professor Rod Stoneman in this, the third in Pod Academy’s series based on his book, Seeing is Believing: the Politics of the Visual. which is produced and presented by Esther Gaytan Fuertes. In this podcast, Rod Stoneman talks about the visual experimentation made possible by the music video, which pushes the boundaries of mainstream narrative film. You can find other podcasts in the series here: Podcast 1 on Fashion images and Podcast 2 on graffiti Rod Stoneman: This image [above] comes from a film called Berlin Horse made by Malcolm Le Grice in 1970, an experimental film from the London Filmmakers’ Co-op. And it’s a striking visual image made from permutations of colour printing, using loops, a horse going round in a circle and a clip from an early American silent film, working alongside music in an interesting way. The music is created by Brian Eno using loops of guitar chords, which the chords are of different lengths so as they go round they change the relationship of the different sets of guitar chords to one another. And it suggests a previous history of work with sound and image happening in the experimental domain: Kenneth Anger made Scorpio Rising and Kustom Kar Kommandos even within I’d say mainstream films but even within feature film productions like Performance by Nicholas Roeg and Donald Cammell there is a sequence where Mike Jagger comes out of character to create a music video, you could say, or premonition of, and Bob Dylan’s famous film with the different lines from Subterranean Homesick Blues. These are precursors of something that really developed when music television started in the early 70s, when MTV was created. Gary Kemp from Spandau Ballet was absolutely right when he said, video was something that a band had to be good at; if you weren’t visual, if you couldn’t work in front of a camera you were not going to happen as a band. It's absolutely clear that, at that moment, MTV offered a possibility for brave and experimental work which didn’t have to be concerned with story telling or narrative to connect with contemporary music and reach a wider audience. But, quite quickly industrial constraints exerted themselves and some videos were taken to be too difficult or too experimental or —occasionally the phrase was used— not ‘MTV- friendly’. That excluded some work, also contracts to be drawn up —I mean, a pop-promo is precisely a promotional tour— and contracts began to be drawn up defining what the film-maker had to achieve in terms of, say, featuring a medium close shot of the lead singer of the band within the first 30 seconds. So that began to close what had been a liberating possibility for visual artists working in film, to bring their work towards a wider audience, without the pressure of narrative, without the necessity to tell stories. The current version of music videos is an absolutely fixed promo for the consumerism, aimed at the youth market. MTV itself has moved off to other formats, to reality television, and the space for something as extraordinary as Malcolm Le Grice’s Berlin Horse —which, interestingly, was used in the Doves’ music video Catch the Sun in a rather decorative way— the space for new visually experiment has really been closed off. If you have enjoyed this podcast, remember you can listen or download the rest of this series from our website, www.podacademy.org Seeing is Believing: The politics of the visual is published by Black Dog (UK £19.95, US £29.95) It explores the complex and reciprocal dynamic between world and image in this most visually mediated society. Although, I say it with a mad, hallucinated grin. Once I thought that to be human was the highest aim a man could have , but now I have nothing to do with the creaking machinery of humanity, I belong to my madness, my excrement, my ecstasy, to the great circuit which flows through the subterranean vaults of the flesh. A man who belongs to this race must stand up on a high place with gibberish in his mouth and rip out his entrails. One has to earn death with all one’s appetites, refuse no poison, reject no experience however degrading or sordid. One has to come to the end of one’s forces, learn that one is a slave - in whatever realm - in order to desire emancipation. And anything that falls short of this frightening spectacle, anything less shuddering, less terrifying, less mad, less intoxicated, less contaminating, is not art. You put on a bishop’s robe and miter, he pondered, and walk around in that, and people bow, genuflect and like that, try to kiss your ring, if not your ass, and pretty soon you’re a bishop. So to speak. What is identity? He asked himself. Where does the act end. The identity of the purveyors of the poisons concocted of brain-destructive filth shot daily, taken orally daily, smoked daily by several million men and women-or rather, that were once men and women- is gradually being unraveled. The rest is counterfeit. The rest is human. The rest belongs to life and lifelessness. The benevolent pride of the genius lies in his will which must be broken. The secret to deliverance lies in the practice of charity. the Impostor
