The highly watched Netflix 2018 documentary Wild Wild Country for people “in the know” was terribly biased. There were no former members. No cult experts. The two people featured were still “true believers in the cult leader, Rajneesh–who was rebranded after his expulsion from the United States as Osho. This cult took over the small town of Antelope, Oregon through deceit and the commune was the relocation from Pune India, where the cult leader had with a history of legal problems, including owing back taxes and claims of drug smuggling. What was missing was what it was actually like to live at the ashram as a child, like Sarito Carroll did til the commune was disbanded due to criminal activities. On this episode of Cult Conversations: The Influence Continuum, I spoke with Sarito Carroll, about her 2024 memoir In the Shadow of Enlightenment: A Girl's Journey Through the Osho Rajneesh Cult, to hear and share more of the real story of what it was like growing up within the cult. Sarito is a passionate writer who was initiated into the cult by Rajneesh himself at nine years old in the late 1970s. She described her latest books as exploring “the complexities of belonging, trauma, the struggle to break free of cultic ties, and the long journey towards self-acceptance.” The book follows her journey to exit the cult and eventually begin a career as a technical writer and attain her Master of Science in Chinese Medicine in 2007, despite never attaining a proper education through the cult. In this episode of the Cult Vault podcast, host Kacey interviews Sarito Carroll, author of 'In the Shadow of Enlightenment,' who shares her experiences growing up in the Osho Rajneesh cult. Sarito discusses the challenges of writing her memoir, the invisibility of children in the Rajneesh movement, and the impact of a nomadic lifestyle on her childhood. She reflects on her experiences in the ashram, the open sexuality culture, and the neglect and abuse that occurred within the community. Sarito's story sheds light on the complexities of growing up in a cult and the lasting effects of those experiences. Sarito's Book: Sarito Carroll - Child of Osho (Bhagwan Shree) Rajneesh cult speaks of sexual abuse, neglect, and highs and lows of unique commune she grew up in.Get in Touch or Support: Patreon - patreon.com/thecultvaultCrimecon UK 2025 https://www.crimecon.co.uk - use code CULT for 10% off tickets!

What happens when a spiritual movement turns into a political force—and then spirals into one of the most bizarre cult stories in modern history?"Rajneeshpuram: The Cult of Rajneesh" takes you deep into the heart of a utopian dream gone dangerously wrong. In the early 1980s, a charismatic Indian guru named Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his devoted followers left India and built a sprawling commune in the Oregon desert. What began as a spiritual experiment quickly transformed into a surreal and shocking tale of power, control, bioterrorism, and international scandal.Episode show notes: www.3amfear.comNarrated by: Nikita FerraoInstagram: @3amfearpod@ncferraoauthorFind me on Youtube @ 3AM Fear PodcastFree thriller eBook: www.ncferrao.comPodcast Music: https://www.purple-planet.comEpisode Music: Music: Halloween Theme 1 by Alexander Nakarada (www.creatorchords.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/SUBSCRIBE us on YOUTUBE: https://bit.ly/3qumnPHFollow on Facebook: https://bit.ly/33RWRtPFollow on Instagram: https://bit.ly/2ImU2JVEmail me on nikita@3amfear.comSources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneeshpuramhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneesh_movementhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneeshhttps://www.neh.gov/humanities/2018/spring/feature/rajneeshpuram-was-more-utopia-desert-it-was-mirrorhttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/oct/12/abuse-rajneesh-cult-children-communeshttps://www.amazon.in/Rajneeshpuram-Inside-Bhagwan-Failed-American/dp/1641604727https://www.thecut.com/2018/04/9-rajneesh-followers-on-what-wild-wild-country-got-wrong.htmlhttps://www.britannica.com/topic/Rajneesh-movementhttps://www.reddit.com/r/WildWildCountry/comments/8asxhp/ama_for_former_rajneeshpuram_resident_i_lived/ https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/survivor-of-bhagwan-shree-rajneeshs-sex-cult-reveals-decades-of-abuse-6675679 https://people.com/crime/wild-wild-country-bhagwan-rajneesh-oregon-today/https://au.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/australian-cults-the-rajneesh-movement-14899/https://www.huffpost.com/entry/cult-wild-wild-country-netflix_n_5ab2b37de4b054d118df49c1https://www.oregonencyclopedia.org/articles/rajneeshees/https://www.oregonlive.com/tv/2018/03/netflix_documentary_on_rajnees.html

It traces the life of multiple characters that intersected across time and space to create a network of interlinking stories about saints, salesmen and scoundrels all involved in spirituality. From Edwin Arnold, whose epic poem about the life of the Buddha became a best-seller in Victorian Britain, to the occultist and magician Aleister Crowley; and from spiritual teachers Jiddu Krishnamurti, Meher Baba and Ramana Maharshi to the controversial guru Rajneesh, The Nirvana Express is an exhilarating, sometimes troubling journey through the West's search for enlightenment. BEST OF: The CIA's Operation Midnight Climax involved drugs and sex as part of a blackmail sting Operation in the 1950s. More than fifty years later we witnessed the downfall of Jefferey Epstein and his blackmail operation, which was sponsored by the same intelligence agencies at home and abroad. Now we are learning about a drug smuggling, sex trafficking, blackmail operation that was run by Sean ‘Diddy' Combs, which also involved rape and possibly even more sinister things involving young artists. Combs reportedly promised his associates connections not just to the ‘good life', but to royal family members like Prince Harry. This reminds us of Prince Andrew's relationship with Epstein and the entire ‘royal' family's relationship, especially King Charles, with the rapist-pervert Jimmy Savile. That Epstein pipeline also ran from Buckingham to Hollywood, too, with Harvey Weinstein, and exposed possible connections with Oprah and other major celebrities involved in trafficking women for abuse. The NXIVM cult, for example, was first thought to involve only Keith Raniere, until it was discovered how the actress Allison Mack was recruiting woman and branding them with her initials at the expensive of liquor heiress Clare Bronfman. Turns out that Ghislaine Maxwell, Allison Mack, and Sheela of the Rajneesh cult were all instrumental in the corruption and abuse, and not simple victims. The Combs story goes beyond pink cocaine, paying women for sex, and hiring college athletes to be drug mules. People like Jay Z have a close relationship with the same crowd and known satanists like Marina Abramović. His wife Beyoncé has been accused by her former drummer, Kimberly Thompson, of practicing “dark magic” and using magic for “sexual molestation.” Thompson accused the singer of killing animals and practicing “extreme witchcraft.” Then there is Mariah Carey's sister Allison, who filed charges against their mother for making “her witness people engaged in sexual acts with adults and children.” Allison alleges their mother took them to “ceremonies or rituals...between 2am and 4am” on “certain dates” of the year. She said the participants would usually wear “long robes with black hoods,” which is exactly what some of Savile's victims claimed. Then there is President Joe Biden and his forgotten daughter Ashley, who's diary documented how she was “hyper-sexualized @ a young age” and how she would do things “to my vagina due to overhearing parents having sex.” Ashley said that Joe Biden, her father, would take showers with her that were inappropriate, and that she has memories of “having sex with friends @ a young age,” something similar to Allison's mothers' ‘friends' who were allowed to have sex with her at 10 years old.  Can you solve this riddle?-FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKWEBSITEPAYPALCashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

"In the West and in privileged pockets of India that have access to technology, we think technology is linear — first film, then TV, then video... But actually in India and in most of the countries that form the global majority, obsolescence structures this. It is not like there is a linear progression of technology for everyone. A lot of people have access to tech which might not be current or new for a certain privileged class. One of my research sites was the Malegaon film industry. This was a DIY filmmaking culture where they made their own films, which had social messaging and were spoofs of Bollywood or Hollywood films. Analog video tech was the base infrastructure of this film industry. They used analog video to shoot and edit these films. It was really interesting that analog video, which was supposed to be very 1980s, 20 years later becomes the base for the industry in Malegaon. I saw this industry, as I was tracking it, changing from analog to digital and thought there seems to be a connection between the two. How can we understand digital culture through a historical perspective? I thought video might offer me clues to make sense of the present" - Ishita Tiwary, author, 'Video Culture in India; The Analog Era' talks to Manjula Narayan about her book that excavates an entirely forgotten cultural moment with its wedding videos, video libraries, godmen like Rajneesh who used the technology to gain an international following, video news magazines like Newstrack that documented everything from Mandal and Masjid to the militarization of Kashmir, and the video films featuring, among others, Aditya Pancholi and a pre-Rangeela Urmila Matondkar, that emerged from media magnate Nari Hira's company, Hiba.

But what really drew the attention of many of the people who had grown up as part of this international community was that the experience of children was barely reflected in the six-part series. Maroesja Perizonius and her mother were part of the Rajneesh movement, joining when Maroosha was six. Maroesja has created a new documentary, Children of the Cult. In his latest book, The Nirvana Express, Mick Brown presents a colourful cast of seekers, writers, mystics, tricksters and chancers – he reveals people's flaws without obscuring the sincerity of spiritual quests.Alongside portraits of better-known subjects, from Vivekananda and the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to Rajneesh, Mick notes the influence of Western occultists, and early interest in Ramana Maharshi – an exemplary sage who inspired The Razor's Edge by Somerset Maugham and A Search in Secret India by Paul Brunton. Our conversation explores the significance of these stories, alongside others from an earlier book, The Spiritual Tourist, which recounts Mick's engagement with mystical teachers. In his day job, he works as a journalist – reporting in detail on guru abuses – so we talk about the value of critical thinking, while considering the merits of genuine teachers, who can only awaken what's found in oneself.

The CIA's Operation Midnight Climax involved drugs and sex as part of a blackmail sting Operation in the 1950s. This reminds us of Prince Andrew's relationship with Epstein and the entire ‘royal' family's relationship, especially King Charles, with the rapist-pervert Jimmy Saville. That Epstein pipeline also ran from Buckinghamto Hollywood, too, with Harvey Weinstein, and exposed possible connections with Oprah and other major celebrities involved in trafficking women for abuse. His wife Beyoncé has been accused by her former drummer, Kimberly Thompson, of practicing “dark magic” and using magic for “sexual molestation.” Thompson accused the singer of killing animals and practicing “extreme witchcraft.” Then there is Mariah Carey's sister Allison, who  filed charges against their mother for making “her witness people engaged in sexual acts with adults and children.” Allison alleges their mother took them to “ceremonies or rituals..between 2am and 4am” on “certain dates” of the year. She said the participants would usually wear “long robes with black hoods,” which is exactly what some of Seville's victims claimed. Then there is President Joe Biden and his forgotten daughter Ashley, who's diary documented how she was “hyper-sexualized @ a young age” and how she would do things “to my vagina due to overhearing parents having sex.” Ashley said that Joe Biden, her father, would take showers with her that were inappropriate, and that she has memories of “having sex with friends @ a young age,” something similar to Allison's mothers's ‘friends' who were allowed to have sex with her at 10 years old.  Can you solve this riddle?-FREE ARCHIVE & RSS: https://www.spreaker.com/show/the-secret-teachingsTwitter: https://twitter.com/TST___RadioFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesecretteachingsWEBSITE (BOOKS, RESUBSCRIBE for early show access): http://thesecretteachings.infoPaypal: rdgable@yahoo.comCashApp: $rdgableBuy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/tstradioSUBSCRIBE TO NETWORK: http://aftermath.mediaEMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.com

Step inside the twisted world of the Rajneeshpuram cult with our latest episode, where an enigmatic Indian guru's quest for utopia leads to a scandalous slice of Oregon's history. We spotlight the tumultuous rise and fall of the Rajneeshpuram commune, starting from their head-scratching financial prowess in acquiring a vast ranch, to their audacious attempts at sculpting a city of their own. Our conversation isn't just a history lesson; it's a deep dive into a community's struggle with an ambitious cult's explosive impact, where salad bars became vectors for bioterrorism, and small-town America clashed with an influx of red-clad devotees. As we thread through the intricate legal battles that the Rajneeshpuram faced, we dissect the blurred lines between church, state, and the ownership of sacred space. The narrative gets personal as the residents of Antelope, Oregon, stand their ground against the commune's expansion, making their town a symbol of the broader conflict. We don't shy away from the darker side either, revealing how a utopian dream distorted into a narrative of crime, eventually branding the group with terrorist undertones. Our exploration goes beyond the headlines, correcting historical inaccuracies and examining the legal repercussions for the commune's most prominent figures, like Ma Anand Sheela. In our final musings, we reflect on the Rajneesh legacy, pondering the transformation of their ranch and mulling over the philosophical echoes of Rajneesh's "ten commandments." Our hosts grapple with defining the group—cult, criminal organization, or a misunderstood community? We also step into the wider realm of cults and terrorist organizations, humorously comparing their evolution to stages of Pokémon, while engaging in rigorous debate about international law, extradition, and the enigmatic Edward Snowden. Join us on this historical rollercoaster, and you might just find that the line between cult and terrorist is finer than you think.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! IN THE COURTYARD at the Antelope Post Office today, there stands a large bronze plaque attached to the base of a flagpole. It reads, “Dedicated to those of this community who throughout the Rajneesh invasion and occupation of 1981-1985 remained, resisted and remembered.” Most visitors probably roll their eyes at this, thinking it a bit melodramatic. Invasion? Occupation? Puh-leeze, they might mutter. But the Rajneeshee takeover of Antelope was not an anodyne bureaucratic exercise. To those who lived through it, it really did feel like a foreign military power had rolled into their town and occupied it. It started out very stealthily. Several properties in the town were up for sale, and suddenly there were offers on all of them. Very ordinary-looking people signed the documents and took possession. Then some more very ordinary-looking people moved into the properties.... Cults and cult leaders can be a disturbing topic to delve into, but it's crucial to expose these manipulative figures and their actions. Tough topics are always a little easier with a friend by your side and that's why we're joined by Ash from TSFU! This episode takes you on the first half of a dark and twisted journey, that of a notorious figure and his devoted followers. We strip away illusions, exposing the shocking truths, some omitted from the Netflix documentary covering the infamous group and the path of destruction that followed. The Bhagwan (or Rajneesh) proves a puzzling spiritual leader, rejecting traditional religious structures and amassing symbols of wealth. Rajneesh's story is also one of both fame and scandal marked by a number of allegations, and many acts of wrong doing. We'll explore the controversial habits, and often contradictory beliefs to begin to chip away at one of the key questions regarding the case, how did a man so contentious rise to power & influence?  The Rajneeshees would leave an unmistakable trail of violence, abuse, and scandal in a small, rural community of Antelope, Oregon. Part 2 will cover how this group left an indelible mark on Wasco County as well as many surrounding areas of the Pacific Northwest. So, brace yourselves as we unravel the secrets of one of the most extreme cults in the Pacific Northwest.Exposing the dark underbelly of these spiritual gurus highlights the danger of manipulation and the seductive power of spirituality, underscoring the importance of awareness and vigilance in recognizing the signs of coercive groups, as well as the potentially destructive effects they can have on individuals and communities. Many cult leaders use spirituality as a weapon to control and exploit their followers. By understanding their tactics, we can better equip ourselves to recognize and combat such manipulation, preventing further victimization and ensuring a safer, more informed society.Today we shared a promo for the podcast They Don't Stay Dead!Come see us at: True Crime & Paranormal Podcast Festival!

Group's leaders planned to pack Wasco County with homeless people to facilitate a political takeover, and reduce opponents' voter turnout with a biological attack. When that didn't work, they bused all the homeless people to Madras. (Antelope, Wasco County; 1980s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/H1005d_Bhagwan3of4.html)

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. Such a good example of that with this week's episode. In 2018, I watched a fascinating docuseries on Netflix called Wild, Wild Country about a controversial guru building a utopian city in the Oregon desert. I thought about doing an episode about the Rajneeshees then, but I didn't want to be overly influenced by that one show. I'm glad I waited. More dirt on the cult has come to light in the years since, and we look into it today. Did Bhagwan Rajneesh really offer enlightenment to his followers? Did he really ever even care about enlightenment? Or was it all about getting rich and sex? Or was it about enlightenment AND getting rich AND sex? Bhagwan's messages often seem empowering and enlightened at quick glance, but looking deeper, there was always a lot of darkness inside the supposed utopia he was trying to build.
