The theatre director Emma Rice is renowned for her bold stagings of much-loved films and books including Brief Encounter, Wuthering Heights and the Red Shoes. For twenty years she worked as an actor, director, and eventually artistic director of Kneehigh, an international touring company based in Cornwall, known for its energetic productions with an inventive use of music and puppetry. In 2016, Emma became artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe, the reconstructed Elizabethan theatre on the south bank of the Thames - although her tenure there ended after two years following disagreements with the board. She has since founded her own touring theatre company, Wise Children, whose recent productions include The Buddha of Suburbia and Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest. Emma's musical passions include Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Mozart and Bach.

How do we raise wise children in a world that often pulls them away from godliness? In this episode of the Trinity Church Podcast, Guest Preacher; Senior Pastor of High Pointe Baptist Church, Juan Sanchez unpacks the biblical foundation for faithful spiritual parenting. Rooted in Proverbs 3:1-12, this sermon explores how all Christians—whether parents, mentors, or spiritual disciplers—are called to shepherd the next generation with biblical instruction and corrective discipline.Through Scripture, Pastor Juan highlights:• God's original mission—to raise godly offspring (Genesis 1:28, Malachi 2:15).• The goal of spiritual parenting—shepherding the heart, not just modifying behavior.• Practical wisdom from Proverbs—how positive instruction and loving correction work together.• The role of the gospel—why true heart obedience comes only through Christ's transforming power.Parenting is challenging, but we are not alone. Listen in as we seek to raise wise children for the glory of God and rely on His grace in every step.

In this episode of A Love Worth Dying For, we talk about wisdom in marriage. We see wisdom as one of the foundational elements of a marriage that demonstrates godliness, longevity, and fidelity. Having wisdom means we share our wisdom, and those who directly receive this is immediate family. We grow in wisdom so our children can learn to grow in wisdom. So how does that look? What does Scripture have to say about raising wise kids? We look at these questions and more in this episode. We hope you're blessed by it. Another weird book and a blast of an episode! Our guest is Nghi Vo, author of The Chosen and the Beautiful and most recently, Siren Queen. Combining 30s Hollywood with fairyland rules, Siren Queen shows us the dark side of celebrity and what it means to craft a persona for public consumption, and what it takes to climb to the top. The book is part Faustian legend, part Gatsbyesque glamour, and ultimately an aesthetic all its own. Nghi chooses a book she picked up at a Barnes and Noble over twenty years ago, a book she's read over and over until the cover fell off, Angela Carter's last novel Wise Children. This book is a haphazard, chaotic telling of a deeply dysfunctional family, with humor and darkness thrown in throughout, and ultimately a book that left us speechless at many, many points. We discuss all things celebrity culture and the morality of performance, along with plenty of laughs along the way. He who withholds his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently – Solomon (Pro. 13:24) Scripture reveals hatred as the driving force behind parents’ neglect to discipline their children. No father can passively allow his kids to do whatever they want to do and, at the same time say, “I really love them.” Apathetic, non-interventionist styles of parenting (aka lazy parenting), yields a host of terrible consequences.

Angela Carter's work was described by Salman Rushdie as 'without equal and without rival'. The award winning author of novels including The Bloody Chamber, Wise Children and Nights at the Circus was a pioneer of English magic realism who re-imagined fairy tales and explored boundary breaking and rebelling against the confines of society. Her non- fiction book The Sadeian Woman explored the ideology of pornography. Thirteen years after her early death, the novelists Joanna Kavenna and Natasha Pulley join Angela Carter's literary executor Susannah Clapp and her friend the cultural critic Christopher Frayling to discuss Carter's writing and influence with Free Thinking presenter Philip Dodd. The readings are performed by Emily Woof. Christopher Frayling is the author of Inside the Bloody Chamber: on Angela Carter, the Gothic, and other weird tales which draws on the letters he and Carter exchanged. Joanna Kavenna is the author of five novels including Come to the Edge. In 2013 she was included in the Granta List of 20 best young writers. Natasha Pulley is the author of The Watchmaker of Filigree Street and a graduate of the creative writing programme at the University of East Anglia. Susannah Clapp is the author of A Card from Angela Carter and Theatre Critic for The Observer. Recorded in front of an audience at the Free Thinking Festival Sage Gateshead. Producer: Zahid Warley
