Leadership as Masterpiece Creation: What Business Leaders Can Learn from the Humanities about Moral Risk-TakingHow leaders can take the moral risks necessary to create “masterpieces”—admirable, distinctive, and high-achieving businesses that create meaningful lives for customers, employees, and themselves. In Leadership as Masterpiece Creation, Charles Spinosa, Matthew Hancocks, and Haridimos Tsoukas show how the humanities can help leaders create profitable, masterpiece organizations. Such organizations, they assert, are ones that possess the emotional and moral sensibilities of an artist, the wisdom of a statesperson, and the technical know-how of commerce. The authors draw on the works of Nietzsche, Heidegger, Bernard Williams, Shakespeare, and Machiavelli to conceptualize moral risk-taking, and then on the actions of Churchill, Madam C. J. Walker, Anita Roddick, Jeff Bezos, and others to show how the humanities can help create admirable businesses today. As management consultants and educators steeped in the humanities themselves, the authors discuss their experiences helping business leaders achieve successful masterpieces that bring good lives to many. After describing our contemporary business environment and examples of leaders who have created masterpiece organizations, the book turns to the basic skills of masterpiece creation: managing moods, building trust, listening for difference, and speaking truth to power. Then come the senior skills: moral risk-taking and creating a masterpiece organizational culture, strategy, and leadership style. Last, the authors explain why their leaders build an economy of gratitude.Want to be a guest on Book 101 Review? Dame Anita Roddick started The Body Shop in Brighton as a way to earn a living while her husband was travelling the Americas by horseback. Her idea for ethically-sourced beauty products which were initially sold in urine sample bottles soon flew. The first shop that she began with a £4,000 loan and painted green to disguise the damp on the walls then developed into a global empire which was eventually sold to L'Oreal for £652m in 2006.Retail consultant and broadcaster Mary Portas has chosen Anita Roddick as her Great Life for her extraordinary creativity, her playfulness and her innovation. She is joined by Anita Roddick's daughter Sam who now works with the Roddick Foundation which distributes some of her fortune to charitable causes. They reflect on how Anita Roddick put principles ahead of profit. She championed cruelty-free beauty and drew inspiration from her international travels to bring exotic-sounding products to the High Street. She pioneered the introduction of creches at work and used her shop windows to promote the environmental campaigns she believed in, leading her to be dubbed the "Queen of Green". They discuss her legacy and ask whether there is still a place for The Body Shop today.Archive includes Anita Roddick talking on the Nine O' Clock News on 16th April 1984 and from the BBC Life And Times television programme from 2000. The Body Shop has ceased its U.S. operations and is closing dozens of locations in Canada amid deepening financial struggles for the British beauty and cosmetics chain. The Body Shop's U.S. arm ceased operations on March 1, according to a company announcement. And the brand's Canadian subsidiary commenced liquidation of 33 closing stores as part of wider restructuring proceedings. These closings arrive just weeks after the U.K.-based retailer appointed insolvency administrators set to consider “all options to find a way forward” after years of financial struggles. A spokesperson for FRP, the administrators hired by The Body Shop International, told The Associated Press that they have also announced plans to shutter 82 of 198 stores total in the U.K. Those closings are expected to occur over the coming weeks. FRP does not oversee The Body Shop's U.S. or Canadian subsidiaries. A spokesperson for The Body Shop North America did not immediately respond to requests for further information. In its March 1 announcement, The Body Shop Canada said it had filed for a notice of intention pursuant to the country's Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act “to obtain a stay” of its parent's administration proceedings in the U.K.—and “provide additional breathing room while it evaluates its strategic alternatives and implements certain restructuring initiatives.” At the time, The Body Shop Canada said its total 105 stores were still open—but that the 33 closings, and end of online sales via Canada's e-commerce platform, were set to arrive “in the near term.” Specifics about the timing of closings and liquidation for U.S. locations were not immediately provided. The Body Shop, which was founded by Anita Roddick and her husband back in 1976, is often hailed as an early champion of ethical practices in business. The retailer of soaps, creams and makeup has promoted fair-trading practices and products that were not tested on animals. The brand became hugely popular in the 1980s, when it was listed on the London Stock Exchange, and grew to have stores in some 80 countries, including many operated through franchises. Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

My guest this week is Chris Solomon, a Physicist who worked at the University of Kent from 1995 until 2020. He specialized in the area of facial recognition and subsequently started a company called Vision Metric which has been his main focus. We talk about the interdisciplinary nature of research, and what he learned from studying Physics, and how it didn't directly affect the way he lived his life. Chris was a good footballer as a boy and was into mathematics. He was born on Hayling Island near Portsmouth and grew up around Brighton. We learn about his family background, including having a mother who had a TV career, presenting an afternoon show on Southern TV called House Party, and meeting Anita Roddick. We find out about his interest in Slade and T-Rex in the 1970s and how we consumed music in those days. We learn about Chris' interest in religion, too, and how he became a seeker. Direct experience is important for him.  Buddhism was his first interest, and we learn about Chris' fascination with the teaching of Gurdjieff and esoteric Christianity. Chris talks about why he didn't always talk about it with colleagues, and whether there should be an academic dimension to spiritual matters. We talk about the Michael Apted 7 Up Series where we see the patterns of our own lives unfold, and we learn about Chris' undergraduate experience of doing Physics at Durham and how he was disappointed with the lack of wonder he encountered. Then, at the end of the interview, Chris talks about how his memories are predominantly positive, and he relates an experience involving some rather difficult tenants which was lesson-learning. We also discover that his younger self imagined that he would end up being either a scientist or a builder.

Relentless Health Value
Are Physicians (and the Rest of Us, Nothing for Nothing) Knights, Knaves, and/or Pawns? With Larry Bauer, MSW, MEd—Summer Shorts 8

Relentless Health Value

During the recording of episode 409, where Larry Bauer was explaining some really cool and innovative bright spots in the healthcare industry created by physicians, we somehow got off on a tangent about an article in JAMA from 2010—and I was all in. Unfortunately, going all in on a topic that has nothing to do with the actual topic of the currently in progress podcast means one thing; and you probably know by now what that one thing is. Yep … summer short. So, let me unveil for you our last summer short of 2023. In this healthcare podcast, we're gonna talk about doctors and the societal perception of them as being a knight, a knave, or a pawn. All of this is from a JAMA article that is entitled, surprisingly enough, “Societal Perceptions of Physicians: Knights, Knaves, or Pawns?” and it's by Sachin Jain, MD, MBA, and Christine Cassel, MD, and is unfortunately firewalled (but I've linked to it anyway). To get us started here, this is the first sentence of that JAMA article: “The British economist Julian Le Grand suggested that public policy is grounded in a conception of humans as ‘knights,' ‘knaves,' or ‘pawns.' Human beings are motivated by virtue (knights) or rigid self-interest (knaves) or are passive victims of their circumstances (pawns).” And, yeah, that plays out. Why can't physicians own hospitals? Well, in somebody's eyes, docs got a knave rap. How'd that happen? I don't know. I can make some guesses. Even if it's a small percentage of docs doing knave-y money grabs or power-hungry things, there is spillover. We societal humans, after all, like black and white, not gray. So, everybody gets painted with the same brush in the same color, and policy gets created to control the lowest common denominators. I loved this conversation with Larry Bauer that follows because it explains a lot of sequelae, if you will, that I couldn't quite put my finger on the root cause of. So, in the brief but fast-moving clip of the conversation that follows, Larry Bauer and I chat about docs as knaves or knights. But we don't get around to pawns, so I did just want to chuck in my two cents here about this third category. I also will say that since I've got these three new classifications, I find myself using it to predict actions—to some effect, I might add. I was chatting with someone recently, and I said something about doing well by doing good and he replied, “Well, how about this? You can do the good, and I'll focus on doing well by doing well.” Okay … so, that's a predictive layup. The harder ones are where people with a lot of press training and social capital do talks about doing good and being knightly, but then you listen to the minutes of their board meetings and, wow, are they focused on revenue maximization … at the expense of patients and their fellow doctors. This happens more often than I would like to see, but then again, I would like to see this happen never. As I mentioned about eight sentences ago, the category we don't talk about in this conversation with Larry Bauer that follows—which has also occupied a chunk of my mind space lately—are pawns. As with all of these categories, it's not just docs who fall into them but everybody else, too. Pawns are super interesting. You might be way ahead of me here and have been thinking about this for years because, on its face, this is obvious. But sometimes there's truth hiding in plain sight, so I'm not embarrassed to keep talking about this in case it helps you connect the same dots I've recently started to connect. I will state at the outset here that those who I would chuck in the pawn category do not listen to this podcast (neither do knaves). They do not like this show at all. This show forces a level of self-reflection and awareness and, to some degree, accountability about the net net of some of the goings-on that those who don't want to hear it don't like at all. I was reading an article the other day about the “tragedy of organizational decision-making.” Kind of like the tragedy of the commons if you're familiar with that terminology, but don't worry about it at all if you're not. The tragedy of organizational decision-making is that everybody in companies, especially big ones, is making lots of decisions. Tens of thousands of decisions happen in any given company on any given day, but so few then feel accountable or responsible or are even keeping track of the downstream and ultimate impact or consequences of any of the combined actions. It's this big machine, and you'll hear some people say that they are but a cog “just doing my job” with no sight line into patient or member or community or societal impact. Without this context or accountability or ownership, it is so easy to make decisions that take to the extremes what should be a nuanced plan of action. And then we get what we've currently got. Look, anybody who is part of a larger organization has to toe the party line to some extent; but there's a difference between making informed choices and seeking ways to deliver a net positive for those we ultimately serve and doing things without contemplation. This is one thing that I love about the Relentless Tribe: just how much contemplation happens. I am still working this out in my own head. I would welcome your feedback and thoughts, but from what I've seen so far, what pervades some of this pawn-like thinking might be—and I empathize with this a lot—it could be a feeling of powerlessness. Why bother being a knight, because nothing I do really matters anyway? Sometimes people just throw hands in air and, yeah, a familiar feeling even amongst those of us who try to think things through and have manifestos. So, I get it. But whereas this feeling of powerlessness causes some of us, meaning you and me, to double down on reflection, it may cause others to just quit trying altogether because they think they have a snowball's chance in hell of influencing absolutely anything. If it helps you in conversations that you might be having at some point with someone who may be feeling powerless, here's a quote I memorized: “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” That was Vincent Van Gogh who said that. You also have Malcolm Gladwell from his book The Tipping Point, which talked about how many people have to be doing something to reach a tipping point: 12%. That's doable. If basically 1 out of 10-ish people in any organization becomes a knight, the minority becomes the majority. Or here's another quote that has some problems admittedly, but it makes a good point if you don't cognate on it too hard: “If you think you are too small to make an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room.” That was Anita Roddick. Anyway, I hope that's inspirational or helpful to you in some way.   You can learn more at the Family Medicine Education Consortium Web site or by emailing Larry at laurence.bauer@gmail.com. “If you think you're too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room.” That's a gem I found in MBS's book, How to Begin, from Body Shop founder Anita Roddick. It came to mind last night while I was being plagued by a particularly elusive mosquito my husband dubbed “Maverick.” (Yes, after the Tom Cruise movie.) In my sleep-deprived state I searched for the meaning—and the business metaphor—behind this pesky, pernicious little beast. Thus, after a midnight brainstorm, I bring you this solo episode on finding (and eradicating!) the mosquitoes* in your business.  *Don't get them confused with the Butterfly Effect—tiny moments (supposedly) sparking massive change, or Splatology—low-stakes time clutter accumulating until you can't see through the windshield any longer.

Matt began his career at Lehman Brothers in 1984 and has over three decades of experience in investment research and investment management.  In 1994 he became the first sell-side analyst in the United States to publish on the topic of socially responsible investing. In this episode, we discuss how early in his career, Matt wrote a sustainability business plan in his first job out of school at Lehman Brothers and how his boss told him he would ruin his career if he didn't stop this sort of thing. We spoke about how he stumbled into the Social Venture Network and ‘found his tribe' after meeting a lot of the early SRI pioneers like Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield of Ben and Jerry's, Howard Schultz of Starbucks Coffee, Anita Roddick of The Body Shop, and a bunch of others who encouraged him to follow his passion for responsible investing, and how he ended up being recruited to replace Trillium's well-known founder, Joan Bavaria.Matt speaks at length about his views on value creation and his belief that a manager's fiduciary responsibility requires incorporating ESG principles into portfolio management. We also discuss greenwashing in the industry and the failures of investment funds to hold themselves accountable to the same standards that they impose on the management of their portfolio companies.Show notes: https://sri360.com/podcast/matt-patskyAbout the SRI 360° Podcast: The SRI 360° Podcast is focused exclusively on sustainable & responsible investing. Anita Roddick a fondé The Body Shop. Rob is joined by James Reed, Chairman of Reed, Britain's biggest recruitment brand and worth over a billion pounds today. James describes how he started out in business, how Reed started and how it grew into the business and brand that it is today. If you're looking to gain insights and advice from one of the most influential entrepreneurs and business owners, don't miss out on this in-depth interview today. Tune in to discover how to start, grow and scale your business, how to strategically plan your business decisions, why mastering negotiation is essentials to success and why having the right mindset will help you succeed in business with the chairman of the world's largest family-owned recruitment company, James Reed. Key Takeaways. Take us through your journey? I suppose I am curious about learning and I am interested in entrepreneurship. My first job was in a cemetery to earn money before I went to college, it was hard work, it was in winter and I had to level graves. It was pretty educational because it made me realise I didn't want to do hard physical work, all my life. I then started working for Anita Roddick, she is the founder of The Body Shop with her husband Gordon, and I was really impressed by her ethos and sense of purpose because it was all about fair trade and not testing on animals, she had a really strong message and brand and I wanted to learn from her. Do you think writing letters to people is more successful than email? Yes, I do, when you email someone you are piling up their inbox but when you write to somebody it is very rare and it stands out more. It is a good way of preempting a job application and that's what I did with Anita Roddick, I saw that she was having some problems, I wrote to her directly and I became caudate of one rather than a candidate of 100. Any way we can differentiate ourselves, and come across as somebody with personality and character is much stronger. How old were you when you attended Harvard? I was 25, it was really tough. You started your study group at 7:20 in the morning and you worked really hard, and you learned a lot. I then came back and got a job at the BBC in production, I loved that I was a trainee producer for a little bit. You have both higher education and experience working in your family business, which one taught you the most? What is interesting is when I went to Harvard, my Dad actually applied and came over too. He did a course for entrepreneurs. I was the first member of our family to go to university, and even though my father left school at 16 with not any O levels, he was really big on education and he learned at night school to be an accountant. The difference is when you study at a university you consider a lot of ideas and see a lot of other people's experiences, but you're not actually doing it yourself. It is all very well having a theory but tries and it in practice, and I have learned that since. Try and take people with you, create a moon purpose, build energy around whatever you're doing, that is really human and that is what I learned from my father. You have been very partly responsible for the growth of your family business, can you tell us how you grew Reed? I think it is always important to be growing, our strategy is very simple. It is to grow organically, we haven't grown it by acquisition. There are only two ways you can grow organically, one is through exceptional service and the other is through innovation and new ideas. If you can deliver a good service to people that they appreciate, they will come back and they will also recommend you to other people, we take that very seriously. Innovation is also a big part of our DNA. We are always looking for new ideas and we are always skint people for their ideas. What justifies recruitment agency fees? You can negotiate your price, but I always say, if a recruitment agent is charging your company a very low fee, where are they going to send their best candidates? There is a huge behind the scenes cost of running a recruitment agency. We spend 20 million pounds on advertising, millions on IT, we have over 3500 staff. So there's a lot of time and investment put into that. All the best and biggest recruiters in the UK use our website. If you're paying a big fee you should expect a really good service and a really strong shortlist and ultimately a really good hire. If you have a good recruiter alongside you who know what you're looking for, that's a really important relationship. How do you probe to get the mindset of somebody and look beyond the CV? Characters are everything in the end. You have to embark on a conversation where you can find out as much as you can. The thing that people most care about is integrity, but if you ask a bunch of school kids “what are you looking for you when you go for a job interview?” They never come up with that. There's a really mean question in my interview book which is “where does your boss think you are right now?” So unless you have taken the time off, if your boss thinks you are with a client or working from home, that's an issue. What is the best advice you have ever received? Be nice to people and to try and have an idea every day. What is the worst advice you have ever received? To not do things that I have ignored and always turned out quite well. Or when people have told me “Be more careful” or “It won't succeed” often they're right but the comfort of a pessimist is being proven correct, but there is nothing better than proving them wrong. What does the word disruptive mean to you? I am not sure it is positive! It has become more ambivalent to me if disruption is good or bad? I think we have entrepreneurs have a duty to think about that, and maybe come up with some new ideas to address that. I love change, I love the challenge of improvement. BEST MOMENTS: “Getting the right people into your organisation is game-changing” “Some ideas have succeeded, and some have failed, but the combination of the two has led us to where we are today” “The difference between hiring someone who is fantastic and hiring one who is a disaster can make or break a business” ABOUT THE GUEST: James Reed is the Chairman of REED – Britain's biggest and best-known recruitment brand and the largest family-owned recruitment company in the world. A lot of people have ideas that they think would make things better, but few progress beyond the daydream of what if?  My guest in this show had an idea that she just couldn't shake, and after enrolling her sister, they set off on an adventure to make it real.  Today, Ruth Anslow is a social entrepreneur and a keen advocate of doing business for social benefit, beyond just making profit. In 2010 she decided to take on supermarkets and co founded HISBE Food with her sister, Amy. HISBE is a supermarket chain with a difference, built on a social enterprise business model and designed to support a sustainable future for food and farming.  Alongside running HISBE, Ruth co founded The Good Business Club, to connect entrepreneurs who are starting, running and growing a “business for good” with the support and resources they need. In 2019 she started “HISBE Bootcamp,” to equip the next generation of food rebels to follow in HISBEs footsteps and launch their own change-making shops and brands. In this show Ruth is sharing tips for how to get your idea off the ground, including how she used TEDx and speaking to spread the message. Enjoy!   What you'll learn: What drove Ruth to completely change her career trajectory. The story of how HISBE came to be born. What thoughts and feelings Ruth had about challenging the status quo. The eight values that shape HISBE and the difficulties living those values and making a business sustainable. How Ruth is creating a movement and getting the message out there. Why Ruth didn't launch the company for three years and what she did to build desire and momentum during this time. The role that speaking has played in sharing her mission. He'd been inspired to get his A levels in order to go to university by Anita Roddick, who he worked for at The Body Shop. It's just one of many incredible moments that contribute to his unique drive. Let's clean up our act to clean up the planet! Mehr Infos findet ihr unter thebodyshop.com. In this episode of our Entrepreneur Heaven Series, we will explore the wisdom of George Eastman, James Cash Penney, The Wright Brothers, and Anita Roddick. Wisdom is timeless, and occasionally turning back the clock is the wisest course of action. Sometimes history is our best teacher.
