David Sharps is the owner of the Lehigh Valley No. 79 Barge and the president of the Waterfront Museum in Red Hook, Brooklyn. David has lived on the barge since the 1980s when it first docked in Red Hook. The ship itself has a long history that we explore in this episode. It currently serves as a museum, performance space, and David's home. David led a previous life of adventure as a juggler on cruise ships in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Eymund Diegel is an urban planner specialized in the mapping and analysis of changing urban, rural, and natural habitat systems. Over the past several years he has been mapping Brooklyn's "ghost streams" - sites where streams and waterways existed in Brooklyn's original ecological zones and now live under asphalt and development. His work is centered around making the city's future more sustainable. We met in Sunset Park, Brooklyn for an ecological walk around the neighborhood, and then we recorded at Eymund's apartment. The Red History Museum documents and educated the public about life under socialism in former Yugoslavia. Their aim is to encourage dialogue about this period, rather than to ignore it. The museum itself is located in the only remaining socialist factory in Dubrovnik. Krešo and I spoke about many elements of this time period and about life in Dubrovnik. Dr. Frank has spent over 30 years documenting foods and life ways of Native American tribes from the Southwest. This lengthy immersion in Native American communities culminated in her book, Foods of the Southwest Indian Nations, featuring traditional and contemporary recipes. Walter Whitewater was born in Pinon, Arizona and is from the Diné (Navajo) Nation. He grew up in a traditional family and began cooking as a young boy after seeing people cooking at some of the traditional ceremonies his family attended. As Culinary Advisor on the cookbook, Foods of the Southwest Indian Nations, Whitewater along with Lois Ellen Frank, Ph.D. won the James Beard Award in the Americana Category. Greg Metzger is the Research and Education Field Program Coordinator at the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center on Long Island.
