OK, so the title is a little dramatic (and abbreviated). It is the title of a book by local author, Susan Moynihan -- 100 Things to Do in Annapolis and the Eastern Shore Before You Die! And while some of these types of books are geared to tourists in town for a weekend, this one is not. Sure, it serves that purpose, but no matter if you are here for a few days, or have lived here your entire life, there will be something unexpected and cool you will discover! We all know about Chick & Ruth's Delly, but how many know about the Modern Stone Age Kitchen in Chestertown? That's the advantage of having a book written by an almost lifelong resident. It's a fast and easy read and is the perfect book to have around the house for when your guests say, "What should we do?" Own an Airbnb? Are you a realtor? Maybe you work at a local hotel? This is a must-read! Have a listen! Because I've been asked over the years, “is sourdough bread gluten free?” AND could it be a healthy, safe option for someone living with chronic health issuesI've finally got some very clear answers for you!To be honest, trying to answer these questions opened up a pandora's box for me. I was then faced with questions I didn't even think to ask like what makes bread labeled “sourdough”… real sourdough?I came to discover that, especially if you live in the US, there's not only a lot of fake sourdough sold on store shelves, but ideas shared on social media about how to make everything from sourdough pancakes or sourdough cookies is probably wrong. We'll get into all of this in today's episode, but I first must acknowledge that for years, gluten has been demonized as a health wrecker. This led countless people to eliminate it (and sourdough bread) from their diets.I spent years teaching how bad gluten was for health…But after 15 years spent avoiding gluten, I've made some really startling discoveries. And that's where sourdough bread comes in (underscoring my long journey to answer that “is sourdough bread gluten free” question). In today's episode, I chat with Dr. Bill Schindler, an archaeologist and food scientist, about the ancient techniques that could revolutionize how we approach bread. He explains why modern wheat is causing problems for so many people and how fermentation transforms grains into a gut-friendly sourdough bread.Dr. Schindler is leading the charge in reviving traditional food preparation methods that can help restore our health. Through his work at the Modern Stone Age Kitchen located in Chestertown, MD, he's proving that sourdough bread can be both nourishing and delicious. If you've ever wondered whether sourdough bread could be worth a try, this episode is for you!In This Episode:Why modern bread is making people sickThe difference between ancient + modern wheat varietiesWhat fermentation does to gluten (and why it matters)Benefits of sourdough breadIs sourdough bread gluten free? (and my experience trying sourdough bread)The hidden truth about “store-bought sourdough”Why fermentation time of sourdough bread is crucial for digestibilityBefore you eat a sourdough cookie or sourdough pancakes…What to look for when buying sourdough bread so you know it's realHow Bill + the Modern Stone Age Kitchen is reviving ancient baking techniquesQuotes“Anybody who's starting to dip their toes into this world of not only eating in this way, but also making your food from scratch at home, fermentation is a great sort of gateway into that world.”“Typically if [the label] says yeast… citric acid, lactic acid, or acetic acid, then I can guarantee you it isn't sourdough and they're trying to fool you.”LinksFind Dr. Bill Schindler + the Modern Stone Age Kitchen online | online | Instagram | InstagramGet Dr. Schindler's book Ready to figure out your skin's root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

It's Midday on Politics.  Tom's first guest today is Heather Mizeur. She is a former delegate from Montgomery County in the Maryland General Assembly. For the past several years, she and her wife have lived on a farm near Chestertown. In 2014, she ran for governor, losing to Anthony Brown in the Democratic primary. And this year, she ran for the US Congress in the first district, against the incumbent Republican Rep. Andy Harris. Harris prevailed in that race, as he has on 6 previous occasions. Harris won by a large margin, drawing 56.7% of the vote to Mizeur's 40.8%, according to the MD State Board of Elections' unofficial results as of Friday (11/11).  That margin is about the same as the one Democrat Jesse Colvin lost by in 2018, the last midterm challenge to Harris. But Heather Mizeur mounted a vigorous and broad-based campaign in the heavily Republican district. She raised more money than Rep. Harris, and she actively engaged his supporters. We've invited Mizeur to join us today to reflect on the campaign, and the lessons that she learned, and the lessons that we all can learn. Heather Mizeur joins us on Zoom from Chestertown. Later in the hour, Tom speaks with Pamela Wood, who covers politics and government for WYPR's partner news organization, the Baltimore Banner, about the transition between MD Gov. Larry Hogan's administration and the incoming administration of Governor-elect Wes Moore. Pamela Wood joins us on Zoom. Then, we take a look at the latest developments in the epic battle to retain or acquire a majority in the US Congress. Tom's final guest today is Theo Meyer, a national political reporter with the Washington Post, and co-author of the Early 202 newsletter. Theo Meyer joins us on our digital line from Washington, DC.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What does it take to let the world know who you are and why you're here? Existential questions that have plagued mankind forever. Along life's journey we take the turns that lead us along a path. Some turns are handed to us or even forced upon us while others are all of our own making. To understand this and live a life based on this understanding is a good description of Neyah White. The story he tells in our conversation is not so much a unique tale as it is a clear roadmap that led Neyah from the eastern shore of Maryland to a place behind a bar in San Francisco that opened the world to him. A small step that led to the wide world of cocktails as an innovator in the craft style of mixing that now permeates the better bars around the world. Then becoming a brand ambassador for Suntory Whiskey. A job that not only helped spread the word of mixology (and his humorous attitude toward the word) but also immersed him the modern Japanese culture. Then now recently back to his hometown of Chestertown, Maryland to build a business in a bar that many years ago he told the owner he would own someday. There were too many great parts of his story that couldn't be left on the editing room floor. So, enjoy a short bonus track of his early years only at www.restaurantlegends.com  Photo; Neyah White and Thomas Kaylor https://edibledelmarva.ediblecommunities.com Music; Shizima3 by PeriTune | http://peritune.com Attriibution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Looking into the past gives us a lens through which to view our present, especially in terms of what humans "should" be eating as a species. But looking into the past is not a panacea––in other words, it's not as simple as: let's just eat what our Paleolithic ancestors ate. Dr. Schindler joins me on the podcast to discuss two critical questions to ask ourselves: What foods were we designed to obtain? What foods were we designed to digest?Dr. Bill Schindler is the founder and director of the Eastern Shore Food Lab, an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland and the costar of the National Geographic series, The Great Human Race, Curiosity Stream's, The Modern Stone Age Family and Wired Magazine's series, Basic Instinct and Food Science. He is a food archaeologist, primitive technologist and chef. Bill travels the world documenting traditional food ways and works to draw inspiration from the deep archaeological record, diverse ethnographic record, and modern culinary world to create food solutions that are relevant, meaningful, and accessible today. His work specifically focuses on HOW we should eat instead of simply the type of food we should eat for optimal health. Bill is a strong advocate of traditional foodways and is constantly seeking new ways to incorporate lessons learned from his research into the diets of modern humans including his own family. Bill resides with his wife and three teenaged children in Maryland.Check out the shownotes at livedamnwell.com/eatlikeahuman––––––––––––––––––––––––––In this episode we coverHow do we tackle the complex problem of: what should humans eat for optimal health? Is the Paleo diet even relevant? How for the first time in human history humans can be both obese and malnourished at the same timeHow genetics affect the way we should eat?––––––––––––––––––––––––––Get 10% OFF the best magnesium supplement on the market:https://livedamnwell.com/recommends/bioptimizers-magnesium/––––––––––––––––––––––––––Links to Dr. SchindlerCheck out his online courses at www.eatlikeahuman.comSocial media @drbillschindler––––––––––––––––––––––––––Learn simple, free ways to reduce stress, support immune function, and calm the nervous system by downloading chapter 2 of my book "Return to Human" FREE: https://mailchi.mp/ab3797c37d7d/live-damn-well-mobile-landing-page––––––––––––––––––––––––––NOT medical advice; not intended to treat, cure or diagnose; this video is merely for educational purposes. The Washington Library's Center for Digital History often collaborates with students to advance its research and public history projects. That can take many forms. We work regularly with faculty to integrate our digital projects into their course assignments, on other occasions we deliver lectures to students about digital history or some aspect of eighteenth-century history, and we're also fortunate to work with student interns throughout the year who assist with our projects while they gain practical, real world experience in the historical profession.  On today's episode, we're excited to bring you a chat with Jamie Morris. Jamie was our summer intern, and she worked closely Jim Ambuske and Jeanette Patrick on number of the Center's initiatives, including this very podcast. Jamie is a senior majoring in history and business at Washington College in Chestertown, MD. She came to us via Wash College's C. V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience, which partners with cultural institutions like the Washington Library to offer students experiential learning opportunities.  In normal circumstances, Jamie would have been on site at the Library for her internship, but as that wasn't possible due to COVID_19, our digital intern became a virtual one. As you'll hear, Jamie wants to use her skills to land her dream job at the Disney Archives, so if any of you listeners have an in with a certain mouse, please do let us know. Jeanette joins Jim on the show to today to talk with Jamie about what she learned and how she hopes to one day work at the Happiest Place on Earth.  About Our Guest:  Jamie Morris is a senior at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. She is the recipient of a number of internships through the C. V. Starr Center for the American Experience, including most recently at the Washington Library. She is a double major in history and business at Washington College.   About Our Guest Co-Host:  Jeanette Patrick is the Digital Writer and Researcher in the Center for Digital History at the Washington Library. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling, she set out to write an otherworldly epic devoid of armed conflict.  In June, Lindevald, a member of the Congregational Church of Manhasset, achieved her goal by releasing a 684-page debut novel called “The Last Wizard of Eneri Clare.”  “I'm upset about our culture and how we embrace violence so completely,” she said in an interview. “It seems a default reaction when everything goes wrong: let's bomb them or let's shoot them. I noticed in the fantasy genre that good guys defeat bad guys by having a battle and chopping the bad guys up. What if there's a novel where the good guys can't use lethal force? Instead they use resourcefulness, community intelligence, and creativity.”  She first developed a love of writing, she said, in English classes at Sachem High School in Ronkonkoma, where prizes for her work helped her gain admission to Washington College, a small liberal arts school in Chestertown, Md. Throughout college she devoted herself to writing a musical, which led her to pursue singing full-time, she said. She wrote of her debut in a blog post: “Don't let anyone ever tell you it's too late for you to have something meaningful to say.”  Her book was published on her 60th Birthday! https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/april-leonie-lindevald/last-wizard-eneri-clare/
