Visiting Chile's Atacama Desert

Tamara and her husband recently took a couple's trip to Chile and this week on the podcast she shares her impressions, experiences, and tips for Santiago and Atacama Desert. In a future episode, she will talk about her week in Chile's Winelands. Episode Highlights Tamara flew Avianca Airlines on a flight deal from Boston to Bogota and Bogota to Santiago. Avianca Airlines business class is more like premium economy and not a very impressive business class but overall the flights went smoothly. She really enjoyed her stay at the Hyatt Centric Las Condes. Las Condes is a nice area to stay in Santiago. If you are visiting Santiago or Valparaiso, be on alert of pickpockets and petty crime and don't wear jewelry and keep your phone secure. Foodies would love the chef's tasting dinner at Borago in Santiago. To get to the Atacama Desert, you fly 1.5-2 hours to Calama and then it is a 1.5 hour drive to San Pedro de Atacama, which is the central hub for the region. Tamara stayed at the Nayara Alto Atacama, which provides a transfer to and from the airport. They offer an all-inclusive rate that includes food, drink, and group excursions. Other options include the Explora and the Tierra and the Awasi offers private excursions. She wouldn't recommend self-driving because there is very little cell service and getting to some of the attractions includes driving on dirt roads. The Atacama Desert is at a higher elevation so it is good to stay at least 3 nights so that you can do the higher elevation excursions later in your stay after you have time to acclimate. Nayara Alto Atacama is part of Virtuoso and booking through Tamara you can get perks that include a $100 spa credit. They did three excursions: Sunset excursion to the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) with some short hikes and finishing with a sundowner Salt Flats and Flamingo Reserve - the salt flats are not the flat white salt that you see in Bolivia or Utah, the salt is mixed with minerals and the flats looks a lot like a white lava field Rainbow Valley - not as dramatic as Rainbow Mountain in Peru but a great landscape with layers of red, white, and green rock Star gazing - the Atacama Desert is well-known for its dark skies and star gazing The food at the resort was fine but lunch was a three-course meal and if you want something more casual you can eat at the bar. The portions are small and there are only a few options per meal, but at least the menu changes every day. Make sure you get the correct adapter for electrical outlets. You need cash for small shops and some tips but you can mostly use a credit card or charge tips to your room Make sure you wear sunscreen and a hat because there is a high UV index Be sure to stay hydrated and bring lots of moisturizer and lip balm Bring plenty of layers because the desert gets cold at night Remember that it is in the Southern Hemisphere so the summer high season is December - March and winter is during our summer. Bring shoes with good traction.

Send us a textThe unsung heroes of motorsports often operate just beyond the spotlight, their critical work making high-speed glory possible while ensuring competitors return safely. Monte Widdison stands as a perfect example – the tall, calm presence who's been the last person thousands of racers see before accelerating down Bonneville's Salt Flats. For over 30 years, Monte has served as head starter for the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association, developing an approach to safety that racers credit with saving their lives. When Bob Dalton survived a 400+ mph crash, his first words to Monty were, "You saved my life," crediting the meticulous way Monty had tightened his safety belts. Similar testimonials from other survivors highlight how essential this final safety check truly is.Beyond starting duties, Monte helped revolutionized course preparation techniques at Bonneville. He reveals the secrets of identifying the optimal salt surface (not bright white but a harder, grayish-opaque salt), creating perfectly straight courses using distant mountains as reference points, and preparing racers mentally for their runs. His insights into salt conditions and driving techniques provide rare, practical wisdom for anyone fascinated by land speed racing. The stories Monte shares – from Bobby Unser initially resisting safety checks until Monte discovered his unlatched shoulder strap, to calming nervous racers with breathing exercises, to his adventures with temperamental course-dragging vehicles – paint a vivid picture of Bonneville's unique culture and challenges. They reveal how seemingly small details and procedures become life-critical when vehicles are exceeding speeds of 200 MPH plus.Whether you're a land speed racing enthusiast, a motorsports fan, or simply curious about the extraordinary people behind extraordinary achievements, this conversation offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of those who make record speeds possible – one safety check, one mile of perfectly prepared salt at a time.Support the show

Welcome to a special edition of the Fintech Takes podcast. I'm Alex Johnson, here with Colton Pond, Chief Marketing Officer at LoanPro. We're recording live from the Salt Flats outside of Salt Lake City during LoanPro's customer advisory board meeting. I'm excited to dive into one of my favorite topics—loan servicing—and co-interview a few attendees with Colton. In this episode, we'll consider what happens after a customer says “yes.” First up, we speak to Jeff Yim, CFO at Borrowell, one of Canada's largest fintechs, helping 3.5M members navigate credit. In a landscape shaped by rising mortgage rates, Jeff speaks to how stellar onboarding and customer service are essential for a competitive edge. Next, we chat with Jared Jones from Moov, a payment platform that's evolved into both an acquiring and issuing processor. As ACH payments decline, they offer competitive fixed interchange rates for debt repayment, focusing on user-first innovations. Then Nick Pesce from Happy Money, dedicated to unsecured personal loans in partnership with credit unions, shares how they're scaling to meet demand for flexible loans, leveraging personalized approaches and credit union partnerships as credit card debt hits record highs. That's followed by Kamal Rajan and Anthony Navarro, who are building business banking at Golden 1 Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions in the U.S. They reveal how they're overcoming legacy challenges as they prep to launch ten new products. Raising the standard of quality for embedded finance infrastructure, Newline™ by Fifth Third is an API platform that enables enterprises to launch and scale payment, card and deposit products directly with Fifth Third Bank.   Learn more at newline53.com 00:10:34 - Jeff Yim, Borrowell 00:24:42 - Jared Jones, Moov 00:41:43 - Nick Pesce, Happy Money 01:00:00 - Kamal Rajan and Anthony Navarro, Golden 1 Credit Union 01:15:54 - Greg [undisclosed] Sign up for Alex's Fintech Takes newsletter for the latest insightful analysis on fintech trends, along with a heaping pile of pop culture references and copious footnotes. A tale of many threads, it centres around Martha and Finn a couple who have come to find  themselves at the end of their relationship. In a bid to save what's left between them they travel to a mysterious retreat on the Bolivian salt flats as part of a group of privileged tourists. There, they undergo a series of ceremonies to unlock the fears that separate them. But as each hallucinogenic episode unfolds the group fragments, falling deeper into themselves rather than closing the gap between them. The Salt Flats is a story of shared guilt and sublimation that asks us to think again about who we share the world with and what it is we are running from. ‘The Salt Flats is gripping, compulsive and deeply human. Today, we're in Southern Bolivia for this leg of my South American journey in one of the most remarkable landscapes on earth. We're in Uyuni Salt Flats. But we start at "The Train Cemetery" to see the first locomotives in Bolivia. This train graveyard, locally known as "Cementerio de Trenes," is a fascinating and eerie attraction located just outside the town of Uyuni in Bolivia. It is where old, rusting train locomotives and railcars from the late 19th and early 20th centuries have been left to deteriorate and slowly decay in the harsh, arid landscape of the Bolivian Altiplano.  And then we headed to one of Mother Earth's most surreal and breathtaking wonders: the Salar de Uyuni, also known as the Uyuni Salt Flats, in the southwest corner of Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes. I'm here in the rainy season, meaning a thin layer of water covers the salt crust. It creates a seamless reflection of the sky above, and the boundary between the heavens and the Earth becomes blurred as clouds, sunsets, and even bodies are duplicated on the salt flats' mirror-like surface. David and our driver set up a small table and some plastic chairs in the middle of all this. And with our feet in the salty water, we had a wonderful and surreal lunch. As night falls, the Salar de Uyuni takes on a new personality. The colours of the sunset were nothing less than spectacular. And by far the most amazing sunset I've ever witnessed in my life. Again, we went nuts with taking pictures and videos. Exploring the Salt Flats is an adventure like no other. It's a photographer's dream come true, where every angle reveals a new perspective. Make sure you go to the blog post for this episode and @Radiovagabond on Instagram to see the pictures. The next morning, we continued our trip to the southwestern part of the country, nearer to the border with Chile. First, we drive through “The High Flats” and then into the “High Andes” and Siloli Dessert. Being between 4500 and 4700 meters above sea level, it's the highest desert in South America. We make a stop at a lake called Laguna Q'ara and then continue a bit south to another high-altitude lake named Laguna Colorada. It's another one of Bolivia's most captivating natural wonders. One of the most iconic features of these lakes is its resident population of flamingos. On the last morning of the tour, our alarm clock was set to 4 am. We're greeted by the breathtaking sight of Laguna Salada. Their still waters reflect the early morning sky with hues of orange, pink, and gold. Here, geysers are natural wonders that erupt with bursts of steam and hot water, putting on a mesmerizing show. The geysers add an exciting element to our morning as we watch them spout their steam into the crisp air. At Termas de Polques at Laguna Salada, we get in the pool of the natural hot springs. As we're in the water, we can watch the rocky formations and the rugged beauty of the Andes as the sun rises. These pools offer a soothing warmth that's especially inviting on a chilly morning like this one. At the end of the trip, the car was driving back to Uyuni, but we asked to be dropped off at the border to Chile and continue our South American journey that way. It was indeed three remarkable days in this picturesque part of the world.

Imagine the badlands of Chambal in the 70's, the setting of Sholay and Kaalia pleading to Gabbar for his life - Sardar, maine aapka namak khaya hai. Now imagine the greatest philosopher from China, Confucious reflecting about the nature of that very namak, and how should rulers rule with morality. What connects the two is Salt. Global demand for lithium is changing Chile's Atacama Desert

PRI: Science, Tech & Environment

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2022

In the salty waters beneath the world's driest desert, lie vast reserves of a valuable mineral: lithium.  This metal is crucial for the planet's energy transition. It is used to power electric vehicles and store solar and wind energy, which bring some hope to a world faced with a rapidly changing climate. The lithium mines, which occupy more than 30 square miles of Chile's Atacama Desert, are operated by two private companies, Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (SQM) and Albemarle. They both have rental contracts with the Chilean government. In these facilities, salty ground water rich in minerals gets pumped to the surface. The liquid, called brine, is then stored in huge evaporation ponds that are exposed to the desert heat.“During [a span of] 18 months, the water in the brine evaporates, and [the] lithium becomes more concentrated,” said Oswaldo Yáñez, SQM's manager of innovation and development. This region has some of the highest solar radiation levels on Earth, and it almost never rains. “The water evaporates incredibly fast here,” Yáñez added. The process ends at a closed plant, where lithium is turned into carbonate and shipped abroad, to places like China or the US.In the past 10 years, the global demand for lithium has skyrocketed. And the increase in production of electric vehicles is expected to raise this demand by at least 300% in the next 10 years. This is good news for Chile's economy. The South American country meets about a third of the globe's lithium demands, and plans to boost lithium production in the next few years.Close to 60% of the world's 86 million tons of identified lithium resources are in Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, according to the US Geological Survey, in an area known as the “Lithium Triangle.” Indigenous people in Chile are concerned that the amount of water used in lithium operations is threatening desert irrigation and farming methods they have relied on for centuries. Credit: Tibisay Zea/The World While Chile has successfully transformed the majority of its available resources into reserves available for commercial production, Argentina and Bolivia have not yet done so. This is largely because of unfavorable investment climates and more challenging geographic conditions, according to Juan Carlos Zuleta, a Bolivian researcher who has been following the lithium business for decades.“This metal will soon be a game changer for this region's economy,” Zuleta said. But for him, the real opportunity is not in extracting and selling lithium. He is researching a possible association between six countries in South America to fabricate and sell lithium batteries and electric vehicles, which the country now imports from abroad.“My idea is basically to create a hub of electric vehicles in South America for the regional market,” Zuleta said. “If we are able to produce the next generation of EVs [electric vehicles] in South America, then we could become a superpower.”Lithium will be crucial in the transition to clean energy, but the extraction method used in the Lithium Triangle presents several environmental problems, according to James Blair, an anthropologist at Cal Poly Pomona, who has done research on lithium mining's impact on Atacama's Indigenous communities.“The main concern is its impact on water use and water availability,” Blair said.“When a large percentage of the water from the brine evaporates, yes, this is exacerbating what is already a major problem of depleted water in one of the driest areas of the world.” Indigenous peoples also worry that the amount of water used in lithium operations threatens desert irrigation and farming methods they have relied on for centuries.Rudencindo Espíndola, an Indigenous topographer in this area, and an activist with the National Observatory of Salt Flats in Chile, said there is a conflict over the way that the industry has presented impacts as benign versus what the Indigenous communities experience.“Brine should be treated as water. ... It's part of our hydrogeological ecosystem and it has a lot of ancestral value for us, so it's worth preserving.”Rudencindo Espíndola, Indigenous topographer“Brine should be treated as water,” Espíndola said. “It's part of our hydrogeological ecosystem and it has a lot of ancestral value for us, so it's worth preserving.”He acknowledged that green energies that demand lithium are good for humanity, “but the price to produce them will be paid by Chile's environment.”Lithium mining is not the only industry that uses groundwater from the Atacama salt flat. Two other companies also mine copper in the region.“Any mining has an impact,” Espíndola said. “The question is, how much impact is acceptable?”Blair said there needs to be more independent research on local biodiversity, water flows and local communities' concerns to find out how to reduce damage. Chile's Atacama desert is one of the driest areas in the world. Credit: Tibisay Zea/The World A recent study linked lithium operations with a decrease in the number of flamingos in the Atacama salt flat.Oswaldo Yáñez, a manager at the SQM mine, said the company is already working on improvements regarding water utilization. “The idea is to extract lithium directly from the brine, without having to evaporate groundwater,” Yáñez said. He added that it will take at least five years to research, develop and implement this method. In the meantime, he said, the tradeoff is worth it, in the name of a greener future. As global demand for lithium keeps rising, anthropologist Blair points out that governments and consumers should do their part, too, “by encouraging battery recycling, and really just reducing car dependency, which is especially a problem in the United States.”There are about 16 million electric cars on the roads around the world now, which is three times more than in 2018. And by 2030, that number is estimated to reach around 350 million.Related: Chileans have long struggled with a water crisis. Management practices are partly to blame, study says.

Jess grew up helping her dad's crew build a Streamliner. After the build and upgrades were complete, the whole family would road trip out to the Salt Flats to crew. In the final year, on its final run, the MacKichan/Schulz Streamliner set a new landspeed record. Streamliners make for an incredible childhood, but it wasn't until later that Jess realized her family was pretty special. Not many people grow up with a parental figure as passionate about getting their kids in the garage as John MacKichan. It was important to John that the kids were involved however they could.  After a few close calls and some health scares, Jess began to prioritize time in the garage with her father. Together, they built her shop and a 1933 5-Window Coupe which John had purchased the year Jess was born. John squirreled it away and when Jess was 10, he promised they would build it together. When it was time to build, Jess would work full time then head out to the farm and work in the shop until 10pm. Over time, it all came together.  In 2016, a tangle with a ‘32 prompted him to sort through a mountain of magazines and boxes of photos to decide what was important to keep. Finally, he filled a box with photos from the 1960s and gave it to Jess, each photo painstakingly documented with parts, colors and locations. She began cataloging the photos on her Instagram account, Photos_From_My_Dad.  Jess has worked at Speedway Motors for 23 years. In her time, she has won a number of awards, including recognition from Rod Authority's Lindsey Fisher in 2014 as one of the automotive industry's Leading Ladies, marking Jess as an up-and-coming leader in automotives. She participated in Speedway Motors' Bucket Beauties T-Bucket build. In 2016, SEMA recognized Jess as one of 35 under 35 industry leaders.  Now more than ever, Jess emphasizes how important it is to get in the garage with family. When a family builds a car together, they don't just get hours of time spent. They get a living, breathing machine that represents all the tough moments, hard work and shared experience that goes into getting a car onto four wheels. This Father's Day, we hope you feel inspired to start the project you've always talked about!  There's nothing like time in the garage with people you love.  We couldn't agree more!
