MOFA slams Cambodia for sending Taiwan fraud suspects to China The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged a protest with the Cambodia government after it deported a group of recently arrested Taiwanese telecoms fraud suspects to China. According to the ministry, some of a group of 180 recently arrested Taiwanese fraud suspects were deported to China late Sunday and early Monday in three groups along with arrested Chinese fraud suspects. The ministry says it doesn't know how many were sent to China over the past two days because the Cambodian government has refused to provide a full list of those who were deported. The foreign ministry is accusing the Cambodian government of bowing to Chinese pressure (壓力) by not providing that information and calling on Phnom Penh to released a list of all the deportees as soon as possible. French counterterrorism prosecutors said three Algerians were arrested Friday on preliminary charges of “kidnapping or arbitrary detention … in connection with a terrorist undertaking (任務),” including one that French media has said was an Algerian consular official. The group is allegedly involved in the April 2024 kidnapping of an Algerian influencer, Amir Boukhors, or Amir DZ, a known critic of the Algerian government with 1.1 million followers on TikTok. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 210-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 22,171 on turnover of $6.7-billion N-T. The market took a beating on Wednesday as the bellwether electronics sector was in investor focus after tech stocks saw heavy losses on Wall Street overnight ahead of the conclusion of the U-S Federal Reserve's two-day policymaking meeting. Market watchers say foreign institutional investors stayed on the sell side during the session and the local main board could see further unpredictability (不可預測性) as volatility on U-S markets is continuing to dictate large-cap electronics stocks here in Taiwan. BUFFALO, NY- January 24, 2024 – A new #research paper was #published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 16, Issue 1, entitled, “Targeting of FSP1 regulates iron homeostasis in drug-tolerant persister head and neck cancer cells via lipid-metabolism-driven ferroptosis.” Research has demonstrated that some tumor cells can transform into drug-tolerant persisters (DTPs), which serve as a reservoir for the recurrence of the disease. In this new study, researchers Yang-Che Wu, Chin-Sheng Huang, Ming-Shou Hsieh, Chih-Ming Huang, Syahru Agung Setiawan, Chi-Tai Yeh, Kuang-Tai Kuo, and Shao-Cheng Liu from Taipei Medical University-Shuang Ho Hospital, Taipei Medical University, Taitung Mackay Memorial Hospital, Tajen University, National Taitung University, and Taipei City's National Defense Medical Center investigated lipid-metabolism-driven ferroptosis and its role in drug resistance and DTP generation in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). “The regulatory roles of ferroptosis suppressor protein 1 (FSP1) in HNSCC metabolic regulation were investigated.” High levels of FSP1 were discovered in the tissues of patients who experienced relapse after cisplatin treatment. RNA sequencing indicated that a series of genes related to lipid metabolism were also highly expressed in tissues from these patients. Consistent results were obtained in primary DTP cells isolated from patients who experienced relapse. The Cancer Genome Atlas database confirmed this finding. This revealed that the activation of drug resistance in cancer cells is influenced by FSP1, intracellular iron homeostasis, and lipid metabolism. Next, the team generated human oral squamous cell carcinoma DTP cells (HNSCC cell line) to cisplatin and observed higher expression of FSP1 and lipid-metabolism-related targets in vitro. The shFSP1 blockade attenuated HNSCC-DTP cell stemness and downregulated tumor invasion and the metastatic rate. They found that cisplatin induced FSP1/ACSL4 axis expression in HNSC-DTPC cells. Finally, the researchers evaluated the HNSCC CSC-inhibitory functions of iFSP1 (a metabolic drug and ferroptosis inducer) used for neo-adjuvant chemotherapy; this was achieved by inducing ferroptosis in a patient-derived xenograft mouse model. “The present findings elucidate the link between iron homeostasis, ferroptosis, and cancer metabolism in HNSCC-DTP generation and acquisition of chemoresistance. The findings may serve as a suitable model for cancer treatment testing and prediction of precision treatment outcomes. In conclusion, this study provides clinically oriented platforms for evaluating metabolism-modulating drugs (FSP1 inhibitors) and new drug candidates of drug resistance and ferroptotic biomarkers.” Corresponding authors - Ming-Shou Hsieh - 22057@s.tmu.edu.tw, and Shao-Cheng Liu - m871435@mail.ndmctsgh.edu.tw About Aging-US Launched in 2009, Aging-US publishes papers of general interest and biological significance in all fields of aging research and age-related diseases, including cancer—and now, with a special focus on COVID-19 vulnerability as an age-dependent syndrome. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. **Tai-Ex opening ** The Tai-Ex opened down 75-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 15,419 on turnover of $3.6-billion N-T. Shares in Taiwan lost some momentum after a strong opening yesterday, as Wall Street stocks also trended lower overnight. The lifting of the ban enables Taiwanese companies making the 63 items, including Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Inc., to export those products to China, effective from last Saturday, January 28th. The head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, Chiu Tai-san, has called the lifting of the ban a "political maneuver" (政治花招), as it violates international trade practices. Chiu says China's import ban on Taiwanese beverage suppliers in early December violated international trade practices, and that the lifting of the ban on some of their items on Sunday was politically motivated. **Free Taiwan Lantern Festival lanterns up for grabs from February 1st ** 80,000 Year-of-the-Rabbit-themed lanterns are to be made available to the public tomorrow. The 2023 rabbit light can held like a traditional lantern, or reassembled (重新組裝) into a luminous rabbit ear ornament and worn as a hat. The Taipei City government's Department of Civil Affairs says members of the public would be able to place preorders for 10,500 of the free lanterns via the festival's official website and TaipeiPASS app, starting from 10 AM tomorrow. **France Rail Operator Recommends Staying Home Amid Strikes ** France's national rail operator is recommending that passengers stay home if possible today to avoid labor strikes. The strikes over pensions are expected to cause major transport woes but largely spare high-speed rail links to Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands. Labor unions mobilized massive street protests in an initial salvo (行動的第一炮) of nationwide strikes earlier this month. They're hoping for similar success Tuesday to maintain pressure on government plans to raise France's retirement age. Rail operator SNCF warned that major network disruptions are expected from Monday night to Wednesday morning. It recommended passengers cancel or postpone trips and work remotely if possible. **US Biden to End COVID19 Controls ** US President Joe Biden is going to end the nation's coronavirus emergencies. The AP's Ed Donahue reports. **Emirates Tests Boeing 777 on Sustainable Fuel ** Long-haul carrier Emirates has successfully flown a Boeing 777 on a test flight with one of its two engines entirely powered by so-called sustainable fuel. The flight lasted just under an hour over the coastline of the United Arab Emirates, after it took off from Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international travel. The fuel powered one of the Boeing's two General Electric Co. engines, with the other running on conventional (傳統的) jet fuel for safety. Emirates described the sustainable fuel as a blend that includes compounds from plant-based sugars, and vegetable oils and animal fats. Those fuels reduce the release of carbon dioxide, but analysts suggest sustainable fuels can be three times or more the cost of jet fuel. It wasn't immediately clear how much the fuel used in the Emirates' test today cost per barrel. Hello to you listening in Taipei City, Taiwan, China!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday.I've come to the end of my annual ritual, re-tracing my steps along 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago. When pilgrims arrive in Santiago many attend the Pilgrim Mass. It's tradition. The Cathedral of Saint James (Santiago) seats 1,000. At Mass all seats are filled with many more pilgrims standing in the aisles, perched on the steps. The homily given that morning challenged us to: “Bring Camino home. Camino is not just The Way here in Spain. You must walk Camino at home. How? Give thanks. Give help.”As my life gets farther and farther away from actually walking the pilgrimage road I find I am closer to the purpose of the walk: Give thanks. Give help.My daily 60 Seconds episodes are a gift of thanks, imagination, inspiration, courage, and more from me to you in the hope that they give help wherever you might need it.Question: How do you give thanks, give help? 60 Seconds is your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that. Stephen Gordon's bio "I fell in love with all the sounds I heard as a child, so I pursued them" says Drummer/Pianist/Composer STEPHEN GORDON of Charlotte, N.C. - "Rather it was Gospel music at church, Funk and Motown with my Dad, Rock and Metal with my friends, Swing or European Classical literature with my peers and colleagues - I did it all." From the age of 4 years old, it became apparent that young Stephen would emerge into the world bringing forth sound, art, visual perspectives and living melodies to all that he pursued. Through the piano, taking lessons from the age of 5 with many teachers of different perspectives at the guidance of his parents and family, Stephen began playing the trumpet at age 12, which ventured into all brass, woodwinds, and eventually the drums and percussion. "They wanted to expand the Mass Choir at church, so my Dad and I became the rhythm section - That will always be my favorite rhythm section: Me and my Dad." From traditional and contemporary Gospel music, Stephen began sitting in and eventually gigging around Charlotte as a drummer and a keyboardist. "It was the Swing that I heard that I wanted to pursue. When I saw Terence Blanchard Sextet live at 15 years old, I said - Yeah, that's what I want to do; Swing." This path would lead Stephen to graduate high school from Northwest School of The Arts in Charlotte, N.C. and pursue touring and traveling internationally/nationally. "I got so many opportunities to travel with the choir, that when it came to gigging and touring with bands and my friends, I didn't see a difference; I was still going after that sound." These opportunities would lead to Stephen traveling and living in many different places and playing with some of the musicians and educators pushing the forefront of this music - pianist Ellis Marsalis, Jr., drummer Mike Clark, organist Joey DeFrancesco, trombonist Wayne Henderson, trombonist Fred Wesley, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr., percussionist Bill Summers, drummer/vibraphonist Jason Marsalis, alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson, vocalist Kurt Elling, pianist Aaron Goldberg, trumpeter Bobby Shew, trombonist Steve Turre, trumpeter Raymond Williams, Sr., bassist Roland Guerin, Poet Abidune Olyewole (The Last Poets), trombonist Tyrone Jefferson - to name a few. Stephen has performed in venues such as Tchaichovsky Hall in Moscow, Russia, The National Concert Hall in Taipei City, Taiwan, Opéra Bastille in Paris, France, The Kursk Philharmonia in Kursk, Russia, Lincoln Center in New York, New York, Ronnie Scott's in London, England, C Venues in Edinburgh, Scotland, The Village Vanguard, The Blue Note and The Jazz Standard in New York, New York, Blues Alley in DC, Babylon in Istanbul, Turkey, The North Sea Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, and many other great venues across the world. Beside playing and touring, recording and teaching have been prospects for Stephen to share in his talents and learn and grow as a musician and as a person. As Stephen resides in Charlotte, N.C., you may catch him all over the world on any given day, swinging and grooving. In this week’s edition of the BryghtCast Weekly Podcast, Bray Wheeler, Consultant, and Bryan Strawser, Principal and Chief Executive discuss three recent events and their potential impact on private sector organizations. Topics Discussed Axios: The China challenge stumps the 2020 candidates Axios: BlackRock's new climate strategy NPR: In the Philippines, Volcano is quieter, but officials renew warnings for people to leave //static.leadpages.net/leadboxes/current/embed.js Episode Transcript Bray Wheeler: Hi and welcome to BryghtCast Weekly or the week of January 13th, 2020. This is our first one for 2020. Bryan Strawser: It's our first one for a little bit. Bray Wheeler: It has, we've taken a little break during the holidays and such as well as just kind of- Bryan Strawser: There really wasn't a whole lot of significant stuff that was going on. Bray Wheeler: Yeah, there's only probably so much you people want to hear about either impeachment or sports or all sorts of different things. You had put out an episode on Iran as well. Bryan Strawser: So we did an episode of the Managing Uncertainty Podcast yesterday, where I talked a little about Iran and some of the things happen there and what companies should consider and do. Bray Wheeler: Yeah, so this is Bray Wheeler. I'm a consultant here at Bryghtpath. Bryan Strawser: And this is Bryan Strawser, principal and chief executive here at Bryghtpath. Bray Wheeler: We like to do, our intro is a little delayed here on BryghtCast. So this week we're going to try, and keep it just a little bit short and sweet and focus on a couple of different things. One kind the major kind of global conversation or global moment that's happened here in the last few days is the volcano eruption in the Philippines. That started occurring on Sunday. The volcano erupted Sunday sending ash about nine miles into the sky. Prompted warnings from Philippine officials in terms of hey, this could be a lot worse. This could really be a catastrophic explosion. So far that hasn't necessarily been the case. It's certainly kind of continued to rumble and spew ash and lava. Bray Wheeler: However, kind of the major impact from this so far has been kind of an ash cloud that was initially sent, that initial one that disrupted flights and operations within Manila. So this volcano is located about 37 miles south of Manila, the Philippines Capitol. And so this ash cloud on Sunday really started to kind of disrupt air operations and that's usually the kind of real critical thing with a lot of the volcanic eruptions. There's not a whole lot of major technology bases or industry things kind of at the foothills of a volcano for probably obvious reasons. But certainly is having an impact on the folks that do live near there. There are thousands of people who have been evacuated around the volcano, but that disruption to Manila and major cities kind of around that area is certainly the big thing for travelers. Bray Wheeler: So flights were disrupted Sunday. That continued into really today when operations kind of resumed normally. So for right now for companies, it sounds like Manila is ... The airport is open, Manila is available, it is not under lava, it is not at risk for some kind of awful- Bryan Strawser: This is not Pompeii. Bray Wheeler: Yeah, awful, awful, awful kind of situation. However, there is a major backlog from those flights being delayed here in the last couple of days. There's a lot of people that are just trying to leave the area in addition to that. So there is a lot of travel disruption at the airport in general, but for businesses in Manila, it is important to make sure that you're accounting for your folks you're looking at your business continuity plans. You're monitoring, kind of the air quality, the travel ability within the area. Just kind of really your basics for monitoring those different things. Bryan Strawser: Yeah. I think yesterday when we had a couple of clients that were impacted by this, I think it was kind of a known how long of a problem this was going to be. Of course, the Philippines government doesn't do the best job of kind of communicating what's happening with these things either. But yeah, I think Bray's got it right. I would monitor carefully what's going on. Travel disruption is probably the biggest risk and that would become reality before there was any real disruption in ... I started to say Hong Kong. Many real disruptions in Manila in terms of regular business operations. It's air quality and transportation, particularly air travel issues I think are the biggest issues to keep an eye on, for right now. Bray Wheeler: Yep. So moving on. The next topic we have for this week is BlackRock. The kind of major investments group made an announcement this week that they're going to be holding companies to higher environmental standards. And really the implications here are, this is kind of a conversation long time kind coming and BlackRock has kind of made similar statements in similar positions on some different issues. But really, they've issued an overt threat as we get into the kind of proxy season and board meeting season and shareholder meeting season. Bray Wheeler: They're threatening to vote against management boards that aren't disclosing kind of climate change risks in the fashion that they would like to see them or having those plans kind of associated with those be in line to key industry standards. So standards like CAFE standards, which are really around car emissions or the gold standard for carbon or the IS 14,000 kind of family of standards around kind of climate environmental policies. Those are kind of some of the kind of the major ones that are out there. But really for companies, BlackRock is a huge, huge player in the game. As probably most companies know, but to have a position on climate change risks, climate change plans, that narrative is becoming a bigger and bigger topic just in general. Bray Wheeler: And when some of these bigger players like BlackRock or if Vanguard steps into it or some of these others, companies are going to have to do something about them and start implementing some of those things and having those conversations if they aren't already taking place. And if they are already taking place, making sure that they are aligned to something substantial because these players will not back off of that. And they control big votes. Bryan Strawser: Yeah, I mean I've been down this road, I mean in the previous employer, dealing with activists, investors at various levels of aggression and influence. And then we've had consulting clients that have been the subject of activist investor campaigns including large private equity firms of which BlackRock is pretty much, I think the largest PE firm and portfolio management company that's out there. It's tough to ... I don't want to overemphasize the importance of this play that BlackRock is making. It's going to make some publicly traded companies very uncomfortable to have to address some of these issues. At the same time in less BlackRock is willing to go in and attempt a proxy fight for majority control over this issue. It's not going to have a huge amount of influence on companies that choose to resist them. Bray Wheeler: No, I think though the one-piece with a BlackRock versus kind of more the kind of activist hedge fund managers is oftentimes groups like BlackRock or Vanguard or things like that are seen as active investors. This means they're actively having a dialogue with those corporations and they're actively engaged. There's more of a kind of a partnership kind of approach there. And so I think to your point, BlackRock isn't going to probably issue too many proxy fights against it, but their influence and their vote in the general conversation and with other investors to say, "You know what, you didn't do enough there. And we're choosing to make company X an example here, And we're going to vote against management proposals on whatever or we're going to vote against these board members because they're members of the committee that's charged with overseeing some of these things." That could have an impact in terms of the dialogue and the ability for companies to kind of adjust. Bray Wheeler: And I don't think that they're looking for every company to kind of save the world, but I think they are looking for companies to start being a little bit more frontal. And a little bit more strategic in kind of ... Trying to think of the right word. A little bit more overt in terms of how they're playing within kind of this sphere and what influence they do have kind of on the overall kind of issue itself. Bryan Strawser: I would agree with that. Bray Wheeler: So with that kind of our last topic, and it should be a relatively quick one because of course, they'll probably be more to play out here, but because it has to do with China. Which has been one of our favorite frequent topics here over the last few months? But ironically doesn't have a whole lot to do with Hong Kong, fortunately, but does have to do with Taiwan. Another kind of satellite geographic location within a kind of China's sphere of influence or in this case not influence. Bray Wheeler: So China has always viewed Taiwan as part of China. Taiwan has always in the rest of the world, has always viewed Taiwan as generally independent of China for the most part. There's probably a few kinds of geopolitical exceptions with different countries, but everybody's seen Taiwan as a separate independent country. China very much wants to bring it back to China. They recently had an election over the weekend. It was- Bryan Strawser: It didn't go the way that China thought it was going to. Bray Wheeler: It did not. And actually it surprised quite a few people in terms of how decisive it was against China. So the pro kind of independent President Tsai, and I apologize if I get this wrong. Tsai Ing-wen won decisively. It wasn't too close. Of course, China then responded with their typical bluster of there were hands in the pot, it was rigged. The United States may have had some influence. We don't believe it kind of conversation and narrative that China typically puts out, but in the face of what they're dealing with, Hong Kong and the decisiveness of this Taiwan election. China's kind of in a weird kind of awkward spot for the moment of trying to figure out is this policy and this plan that Xi Jinping has put forth, is that actually bearing fruit? Bray Wheeler: And this was kind of a direct challenge back to the Chinese premier of yeah, we're not falling in line. Your influence has clearly waned, at least in this election of what's going on. So on the heels of continued unrest in Hong Kong, which China has much more control over that situation along with Taiwan. China is kind of in a weird spot right now. Just in kind of in their home area. Bryan Strawser: Yeah, there's a pretty good article coming out of the election in Axios yesterday. I think Axios, China is their smaller magazine, smaller online product that looks at just trying to ... That said that they think that China has been overestimating and over-communicating their influence and wealth and economic growth and military capacity for some time. And then you start to look at ... They were kind of building this off of a couple of different things, but one of the biggest was the Taiwan elections, just not going the way that China was expecting that to go. And really being rebuffed at the polls. And I don't know, I mean maybe I have an American point of view on this, but I've been to Taiwan a couple of times and you walk and talk to folks who live there and folks in Taipei City, I haven't been outside of Taipei. But around Taipei City and none of them want to be part of China. Bray Wheeler: No. Bryan Strawser: They might be interested in a peaceful reconciliation that allows for some easier border movement and some things. But I don't get the sense that the average Taiwanese man or woman wants to live in China. Bray Wheeler: No. Bryan Strawser: Their version of China, Taiwan. Bray Wheeler: Right. Bryan Strawser: Not the communist China version of China. Bray Wheeler: Correct. Yeah. I think that's kind of a good read because not only in addition to these elections, there's also the kind of the international and domestic challenges of their kind of their relations with the Muslim minorities within China. And the fallout from some of their policies and things that they've been doing. Reeducation or whatever you want to call it. With some of the children and things like that within these Muslim minority populations and in Western China. Really kind of China's influence over the last few months. It's kind of just taken some weird kind of hits. And I think that Axios article is probably pretty, pretty interestingly kind of accurate in terms of what China is projecting is not necessarily what is reality or what even people have ... Because I think a lot of people kind of internationally probably have some skepticism around China's bluster, but they don't overtly kind of challenge a lot of it because there's a lot of interdependency of where China is interconnected. Whether it's economically or politically or things like that. Bray Wheeler: But to kind of see some of these things start to play out in their kind of their rebuffs just in general within the international community. The trade war, things like that, that they've kind of just taken some weird kind of hits over the last ... Nothing that's going to destabilize or kind of throw them off orbit. But definitely their influence and their kind of reputation or their brand perception to put it in kind of business terms is definitely not what it was six months ago or a year ago. Bryan Strawser: Yeah. I mean I think you're dead on. And we both looked at the article. I thought it was a pretty good summation that China's perhaps not at the peak of their game in some areas that are commonly thought that they were. That article covered the economy and military and might and projection. I think it was really focused on China's Naval fleet and some of the challenges China's had with operating a fleet at the capacity and expertise that the United States and the United Kingdom have. But also just where their foreign policy has perhaps not been as astute in dealing with President Trump and dealing with Taiwan and others in there. And I don't think this takes away anything from China's rise to be a pure competitor of the United States in the long haul, but certainly indicates that perhaps not all as well inside the bubble as the Chinese government might portray itself to be. Bray Wheeler: No, especially post kind of president Xi Jinping election and kind of the expectations that were to come from really kind of that like the lifetime election of him in this role, it's not really what you want to see right out of the gate. Kind of after an election like that to have kind of these types of hits. China probably wanted to see some of this stuff go a little bit more their way to kind of justify what was going on, and especially after everything that he's done internally. Bryan Strawser: Right. That's it for this edition of BryghtCast. We'll be back next week or thereafter with another new episode. Be well.
This week the global BGP IPv4 table is around 800,000 entries in size. I bring this up just to give you a head-up and say a “Wow”. I don’t want to make you worry about the number. This is not my intention.I still remember the “old good time” when I had installed a BGP router (Cisco 3660) with 256 Megabytes of DRAM memory in year 2001. At that time, the BGP table is below 150,000 entries so that router worked well.Screen capture of CIDR REPORT website on November 3, 2019The size of router DRAM memory is not a problem today for most of BGP administrators. I had created a post about BGP memory consumption and had this rough estimate: every 100K BGP entries from a single peer requires 80 Megabytes of DRAM.In other words, to store 800,000 entries today, we simply need around 800 Megabytes (that is 0.8 Gigabytes) DRAM for BGP protocol. This is simply a piece of cake for today’s router hardware.Even an old Cisco ASR 1000 RP1 router with 4 Gigabytes DRAM supports “up to 1,000,000 IPv4 routes”. No worry on 800K BGP entries.Taipei City view over Taipei Main Station (台北車站).August 21, 2019One more thing…I just want to remind you when you are planning for BGP Route Reflectors. The memory size could be an issue because you must multiply the above estimates to the number of BGP protocol peers.Again, with Cisco ASR 1000 RP1 router with 4 Gigabytes DRAM, BGP Route Reflector scalability is “up to 5,000,000 IPv4 routes”. If you are planning a route reflector using this model to have more than 5 BGP peers, you must examine the table size more carefully. And by the way, IPv6 global BGP table size is around 80K this week. IPv6 table size is still not that huge compared to IPv4 today.I am Li-Ji Hong. This is my blog “Show IP Protocols”. See you next time!
It is always a best practice to keep full track of all IP address assignments inside our local area network. From time to time, it might also be a good idea for security purposes to check whether we have any hidden nodes inside our network. To discover any node with active IP addresses inside our network, we might imagine that we must acquire powerful tools such as Cisco Prime Infrastructure before we can achieve anything. In fact, it might be much easier than you have expected. Let me show you how.All you must have is a Windows 10 PC. I think that should be easy.Step 1: Start a PowerShell window with normal user privilegeType “Windows Logo Key ❖ + R”, in the popup dialog, type “powershell”, and press Enter key to start a new PowerShell window.Step 2: Type in or copy/paste this one-liner, and press Enter key to runHere is a PowerShell one-liner I tested on my computer.$ipv4prefix=$(ipconfig | where {$_ -match 'IPv4.+s(d{1,3}.d{1,3}.d{1,3}.)' } | out-null; $Matches[1]); 0..255 | %{"$ipv4prefix$_"}| % {"$($_): $(Test-Connection -count 1 -quiet -ComputerName $($_))"}Just in case the variable “$ipv4prefix” is not parsed correctly, or you simply want to scan other networks in different IPv4 prefix, you can manually assign that string. For example, your IP address range is in “192.168.1.X”, you can assign “$ipv4prefix” variable with “192.168.1.”. Please be careful, we need a dot at the end of string. The modified one-liner now becomes like this:$ipv4prefix="192.168.1."; 0..255 | %{"$ipv4prefix$_"}| % {"$($_): $(Test-Connection -count 1 -quiet -ComputerName $($_))"} Step 3: Wait for about 5 minutes to finish the scanning and capture your PowerShell window screen. The output should be something like this screen:192.168.1.0: False192.168.1.1: True192.168.1.2: False192.168.1.3: False192.168.1.4: False192.168.1.5: True…Those lines with “True” result are active IP addresses inside your network. The rest of IP addresses are not responding at all.If you want to print out only active ones, you can attach filters at the end of previous one-liners with “| Select-String True”. For example:$ipv4prefix=$(ipconfig | where {$_ -match 'IPv4.+s(d{1,3}.d{1,3}.d{1,3}.)' } | out-null; $Matches[1]); 0..255 | %{"$ipv4prefix$_"}| % {"$($_): $(Test-Connection -count 1 -quiet -ComputerName $($_))"} | Select-String TrueThe output should be like this:192.168.1.1: True192.168.1.5: True…Playground inside Central Culture Park (中央藝文公園、華山大草原)Taipei City, TaiwanOne more thing…In this post I just showed you how easily you can explore your network with simply your Windows 10 PC. You can now imagine that with a Linux desktop we can do even more powerful discovery than this. Here is a one-liner for BASH together with standard tool “awk”:ipv4prefix="192.168.1."; for i in `seq 1 255`; do ping -c 1 ${ipv4prefix}$i | tr n ' ' | awk '/1 received/ {print $2}'; doneNow you have no excuses to say, I cannot do any network exploration until I have Cisco Prime Infrastructure. You can start network discovery right now after reading my post here. And now you know how easily malicious hackers can find your public IP addresses, and create trouble for you if your public-facing network devices are vulnerable, just like this incident.Show IP Protocols: Bank lost 1 million US Dollars because of outdated routersI am Li-Ji Hong. Cisco recently announced major changes of certification programs and they all will take place on February 24, 2020. In this post, I am giving you my quick summary on CCNA alone.CCNA Exam Changes (200-301)The official new exam name for CCNA 2020 is “Cisco Certified Network Associate v2.0 (CCNA 200-301)”. I know it is quite confusing since CCNA exams has already been changed for a couple of times in recent years. I will call this 2020 CCNA by its exam code “200-301” instead.Compared to current single 200-125 exam, more topics and questions would be tested in the new 200-301, such as Wireless LAN, Automation and Programming. The exam time is also increased. For short, the new CCNA exam would be more challenging to prepare over the current exams. The good news is, we still have around 8 months to take current single 200-125 exam, before February 24, 2020 from today. If you are in the middle of CCNA preparation, I recommend keep going, which is also what Cisco recommends. Eight months should be enough for you, no matter you plan to dedicate days to take a classroom training, online training, or use self-studying kits, as tools for exam preparations.Let’s move on to impacts.Impacts to CCENT holdersIf you plan to achieve CCNA by passing 2 exams in 2 stages, the 2020 changes could impact you the most. This is because CCENT certification itself is also gone after February 24, 2020! Your CCENT passing status could not be re-certified after February 24.To acquire your CCNA, you must pass both ICND1 (100-105) and ICND2 (200-105) in 8 months from today. Otherwise, you can only restart your whole CCNA certification process after February 24.Impacts to specialized CCNA, e.g. CCNA WirelessSpecialized CCNA certifications, such as CCNA Wireless, would all be gone after February 24! They all will become the single certification: CCNA. No more individual specialized CCNA anymore. Here is the list of “specialized CCNA” I know would be gone:CCNA CloudCCNA CollaborationCCNA Cyber OpsCCNA Data CenterCCDACCNA IndustrialCCNA Routing and SwitchingCCNA SecurityCCNA Service ProviderCCNA WirelessWait a minute, what about my passing status of these above certifications? In fact, Cisco will send you a new CCNA certificate if you are still a valid specialized CCNA holder on February 24. Since you have paid extra efforts for specialized CCNA, Cisco would recognize and count them in credits. These credits would be counted for your future CCNA recertification. I will talk more on CCNA recertification soon in next topic. For short, if you already are specialized CCNA certificate holder, you still preserve your extra efforts over plain CCNA. If you are in the middle of taking specialized CCNA exam, unless your exam costs are sponsored or requested to do it anyway, then I recommend wait until February 24.I want to clarify that Cisco do also announce new Cisco Certified Specialist (or CCS for short) certifications. However, do not confuse them with specialized CCNA. Your specialized CCNA exam passing status would not help you to acquire the new CCS certifications. Although the tested topics might be overlapping with your specialized CCNA, you still must take new CCS exams after February 24 to acquire your new CCS certification.Impacts on CCNA RecertificationAfter February 24, you have more paths to recertify your CCNA. Originally, you can only re-take the same CCNA exam every 3 years to recertify. After February 24, you have more options. You can take any training classes that Cisco recognizes with credits. If you have acquired more than 30 credits every 3 years, you recertify your CCNA without taking any exams.Although up to this moment, I don’t find any “credit” assignment rules to training classes yet. I believe Cisco would announce them soon.In my opinion, this is a more flexible approach because many people have completed many major training classes, and they just don’t have the time to pass the exams.Shimen Red House (西門紅樓)Taipei City, TaiwanOne more thing…I like the new changes to CCNA certification. Although it would be more difficult to prepare for new exams, adding topics such as Automation and Programming is great because this is the trend for TCP/IP networking. I will talk more on automation and programming soon in future posts. In addition to CCNA, Cisco also announced major changes to CCNP and CCIE, and they all take place on February 24, 2020. If you want to know more on CCNP and CCIE certification changes, please let me know by leaving your questions below. This is my blog “Show IP Protocols”. I am Li-Ji Hong! Stay tuned!Links on Cisco.com:Cisco Certified Network Associate (200-301)New CCNA exam goes live on February 24, 2020

Another update on day 8 of living in Ho Chi Minh City. The last few days have been good as I adjust to the climate which I'm told will be scorching hot before the rains start in June. With the heat also comes an adjustment of diet, mostly eating lighter, and of course remembering to stay hydrated-absolutely essential. I miss the water fountains and stations that Taipei City provides it's population. There are plenty of convenience stores in Ho Chi Minh City where one can stop, get rehydrated and some even have small sitting areas. This is definitely a city that's buzzing with growth and opportunity. Thanks very much for listening to the podcasts. Please send your travel questions to john@fareasttravels.com. I saw a post about Cisco has announced 400G Ethernet switch products.400G Ethernet means the bit rate can be up to 400 Gbps. Here are some of my observation notes on 400G Ethernet products. Cisco announced four models of Nexus 400G switchesScreen capture on Cisco.comIn the product page, Cisco announced 4 new models of Nexus switches with 400G Ethernet capability.Nexus 9316D-GX is for Cisco ACI Spine. Nexus 93600CD-GX is for Cisco ACI Leaf. Nexus 3408-S and Nexus 3432D-S are non-ACI Ethernet switches.Cisco's Product page is:https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/solutions/data-center/high-capacity-400g-data-center-networking/index.html400G port transceivers: QSFP-DDAll four models use QSFP-DD as 400G Ethernet transceiver type.Screen capture on Cisco.com.QSFP Double Density (QSFP-DD) transceivers are the same size on the switch front panel as QSFP transceivers. The switch ports are also compatible with existing QSFP28 transceivers. That means, my current 100G transceivers can be inserted and reused on these new faster Nexus switches. The fiber connectors: LC or MPO-12Fiber connectors should be in LC or MPO-12 types.I cannot find an official datasheet to confirm that at this moment. However, I believe this should be true when I saw photos published on Cisco official web site.Screen capture on Cisco.comScreen capture on Cisco.comIf my fiber cabling connectors are in types of LC or MPO-12, I can reuse my existing fiber infrastructure to upgrade to 400G Ethernet. When you are planning for new fiber installation, I also recommend choosing LC and MPO-12 connectors. One more thing…I believe 400G Ethernet should still be very expensive today in year 2018. I might not need it soon. I know I can reuse my existing expensive 100G Ethernet transceivers and fiber infrastructures when I upgrade to 400G Ethernet in the future. And this makes me feel better.I am Li-Ji Hong. What do you think about 400G Ethernet? Please share your ideas with me in the comments below! Taipei, Taiwan-5 Top Districts For Your Hotel Search It's always challenging when you visit any city for the first time to decide on where exactly you want to stay. This video highlights my 5 favorite districts to stay in Taipei. The characteristics of each district are highlighted to make it easier to decide which one suits you best. Technically Taipei Main Station is not a district but falls in Zhongzheng but I think it's better to use Taipei Main Station when you're searching for hotels and other retail or services. The districts fall in order of transportation convenience with number 1 Taipei Main Station being the best and Xinyi District the area furthest away. Taipei City is not that expansive so if you stay in Xinyi it will take you approximately 20 minutes to get to Taipei Main Station by MRT.Zhongshan is convenient and has a some nice sites to visit including the Ningxia Night Market, Dihua Old Street, The Museum of Contemporary Art.Daan is great for shoppers, foodies, bar hoppers, and some nice parks and neighborhoods to explore. Ximending is the most energetic district with lots of choices for food, cafes, entertainment, street performers, and is completely safe even with the crowds that inhabit the place every night. Xinyi is the most luxurious of all the districts with the best selection of 5 star hotels, international restaurants, Chinese/Taiwanese fine dining, and the best Japanese food. Bars, hot nightclubs and one of the best selections of luxury goods stores in East Asia. Thanks so much for watching the video! Taipei, Taiwan is a super modern city with a deep-rooted culture that is becoming more and more popular as a gateway to East Asia and Southeast Asia. It’s new express MRT service from Taoyuan International Airport, a 36 minute ride, will make it even more convenient for travellers, especially those on a short layover. This short but important list of essential things you should know will help keep you on track with a smooth stay. Although taxis are plentiful and relatively inexpensive compared with other big cities in East Asia the MRT is one of the best ways to get to most of the main sites and business centers of Taipei City. The Nangang Exhibition Center where many conventions and shows are held is accessible by the blue and brown MRT lines. Neihou, where many tech industry businesses have their head office is also on the brown line, Xihu is one of the most convenient stops for quick and easy access. Taipei 101 for the last 3.5 years has had it’s own MRT stop on the red line. This is where you’ll also find The International Convention Center next to the Taipei 101 Shopping Mall. It’s also in close proximity to Taipei City Hall and is apart of the Xinyi Shopping District, where you’ll find one of the largest selections of luxury goods stores in East Asia. If you want to get more of a local perspective pick up an Easycard available at most MRT stations and register it online with Ubike, https://taipei.youbike.com.tw/en/index.php so you can have access to the city bikes that have stations across Taipei City and New Taipei City. Simply swipe your card next to the bike you want to rent and you’re ready to go. You can drop the bike off at any Ubike station. They’re almost always located near an MRT station. In the video I mention briefly that the Taiwanese people are very friendly and helpful. It’s true! If you ever appear to be lost or confused while looking at a map you will in most cases immediately attract the attention of a local who will be pleased to help you find your way. That’s wny I said “get lost”, literally you can get lost while exploring this amazing city with it’s maze of alleyways, quiet cafes, food stalls and shops and not worry that you won’t have help getting back to your hotel. Taipei and the rest of Taiwan is an extremely safe place to travel. There is literally no or very rare violent crime against tourists. Personal ownership of guns is banned. There has been reports of pick pocketing and petty theft, particularly in night markets and crowded places, but I think this is even rare now. Enjoy your stay in Taipei and please feel free to leave any comments or questions. You can also message me on the Far East Adventure Travel Facebook page! Lasse-Peter Pestel is an Investment Strategist at Deka Investment in Frankfurt Am Main. He self-describes as having grown up between two cultures - Germany and Finland. He later added to this cultural mix by through extensive investing experience in Asia, in particular, Thailand and Taiwan. Starting his career as an intern at Georg Reisse GmbH CoKgin 2004, Lasse-Peter worked for over a dozen different companies including DE-Consult in Taipei City and Fidelity Investments in Frankfurt, Germany. Lasse-Peter also earned an MBA degree focusing on statistical studies such as econometrics and its usefulness in banking, risk management, and portfolio management. His work has always been with companies active in capital markets. These companies have been focused on fund management, portfolio construction, and asset simulations regarding return and risks, and various tax issues in relation to stock returns. In this episode, Lasse-Peter Pestel shares his investment experience venturing into government bond investments that are based on political rationality without knowing and studying the risk that comes with it, only focusing on the projected returns. “Make your research then sit back. And let your common sense run a little bit. Just rethink if there are really irrationality on it or not.” -Lasse-Peter Pestel What do you want to hear from the My Worst Investment Ever Podcast? It doesn’t mean that that pattern will repeat itself again. You could be the unlucky one at the unlucky time. If things worked two times as it did before, they do not necessarily work the third time. Lesson 2: Do not rely on politicians to provide your return. Because when things go bad, they’ll throw you into the open market. Political rationality is not the same as economic rationality. Once these two collide, economic rationality tends to win. Lesson 3: Be careful in following the market and the sentiment running around. Gather more information to cover instead of blindly running around the markets. Whenever we make a bad mistake in our investing, it usually does have to do with our lack of research that we have done or maybe just the idea of not stopping and thinking about the risks. And a lot of time we just think of the returns. After reading articles by Doug Madory, and by Louis Poinsignon, here are some notes I observed and learned.[What happened in this incident?]Hackers somehow made some BGP routers of “eNet” to falsely announce that they own the following 5 IP subnets, which are indeed NOT belonging to “eNet”. The true owner is Amazon. To be more specific, they are for Amazon’s Route 53 DNS name resolution services.205.251.192.0/24205.251.193.0/24205.251.195.0/24205.251.197.0/24205.251.199.0/24The registered domain server for domain “MyEtherWallet.com” is hosted on Amazon Route 53.Hackers also somehow embedded malicious DNS server (or servers, I really don’t know) also inside service network of “eNet”.After that, any affected clients’ DNS query for domain “MyEtherWallet.com” would hit hacker’s malicious DNS server. Of course, malicious DNS server would respond with false IP addresses, and those false IP addresses are indeed hacker’s own web servers. At this moment, clients thought they were accessing “MyEtherWallet.com”, and they indeed were accessing hacker’s web servers.[Which clients are affected?]I believe all clients inside “eNet”, and any clients in other Internet Service Providers who trusted “eNet”’s false announcements, would be affected as well.[Network “eNet” should have been compromised for enough time]To falsely announce BGP routes, we must either change configurations of hardware routers, or BGP route servers (maybe on Linux). For me, to configure BGP correctly on a couple of Cisco routers is already a heavy task. It’s not easy. To modify existing BGP configurations to inject false announcements without getting noticed, or without breaking anything at the same time, is even a more difficult task for me.I really don’t think it would be easier to achieve the same results by working on BGP route servers. Moreover, hackers even embedded DNS server inside “eNet”’s service network. I really believe hackers had already controlled most of the hardware routers and some hardware servers, maybe for quite a long time, long enough for them to do all such modifications.I really think some hackers involved in this incident are quite skillful at network hardware maybe Cisco’s or Juniper’s. They could also be CCIEs.[BGP Injection, instead of BGP Leak]So, the last thing I want to say is, I would rather call this incident as BGP injection, instead of BGP leak. Why?If I hear someone says BGP Leaks, I would feel maybe some unknown bugs inside BGP protocol or some configuration errors caused this incident. As far as I understand now, I really think the false BGP announcements are “intentional”. I would rather say it is BGP Injection.Although no strong security mechanisms are defined in BGP protocol itself, in this case BGP protocol is not to blame.Flowers of East Asian sage, around Zhoumei Xian Zai Gang Park (洲美蜆仔港公園)Taipei City, Taiwan. One more thing…Amazon is also not to blame for this incident. Clients’ DNS query packets never reached Amazon at all.I suggest Internet Service Providers should pay more attention to the security of their service infrastructure. Don’t become another “eNet”.I also suggest Internet Service Providers should review their incoming BGP policy. In this case, some ISPs other than “eNet” were also affected because their BGP routers “trusted” “eNet”’s false announcements. They affected their own customers and forwarded that false information on at the same time.

During the 7th month of every lunar calendar year ghosts or “good brothers”, as they are politely referred to by Taiwanese, walk the earth potentially causing trouble for the living. Food, drink, other offerings, and prayers are offered to appease the wandering ghosts. Taiwan Provincial City God Temple in Taipei City, Taiwan holds one of the biggest “Pudus” on the 25th day of the lunar calendar month. The Taipei City mayor is invited every year to help initiate the event and thousands show up throughout the day to bring offerings of food, drink, and other items and watch the rites performed with help of Taoist and Buddhist monks. The local media was out in full force to cover the event and would probably out number any North American city of the same size. I was impressed with the amount and variety food that was brought to the Taiwan Provincial City God Temple and my friend Wayne Chen shared with me that many of the items are donated to charity as well as local aboriginal tribes in Central and Southern Taiwan once the rites have been completed at the Pudu. I want to thank the director of the temple Chan Ling Chuan and Wayne Chen for inviting me to the Pudu along with all of the wonderful volunteers that work very hard to put together this event. Taiwan is an amazing place filled with a fascinating rich vibrant culture. I hope on your visit you are exposed to these great festivals and rituals and the hospitality of the Taiwanese. fundly.com/far-east-adventure-travel-video-production-improvements I am in desperate need of upgrades to my video equipment. It's always challenging when you visit any city for the first time to decide on where exactly you want to stay. Taipei City is not that expansive so if you stay in Xinyi it will take you approximately 20 minutes to get to Taipei Main Station by MRT. Zhongshan is convenient and has a some nice sites to visit including the Ningxia Night Market, Dihua Old Street, The Museum of Contemporary Art. Daan is great for shoppers, foodies, bar hoppers, and some nice parks and neighborhoods to explore. Visit my Patreon page to see the offers:patreon.com/FarEastAdventureTravel I find the history and relationships Taiwan has had with nations like the United States and Japan absolutely fascinating. Unfortunately due to the development and rapid growth particularly of Taipei and New Taipei City many buildings that were apart of the history of America's years of on island support are gone. The old U.S. Embassy has been replaced by the National Taxation Bureau. The U.S. Taiwan Defence Command is now the location of The Taipei Fine Arts Museum. I sense though that there are still places out there to be discovered and shared. Video Script: "In Zhongshan District, a vibrant area of Taipei where many luxury hotels are located sits an iconic building of the neighborhood with a past life deep rooted in American history. When it was first built the former U.S. Ambassador’s residence was originally used as the U.S. Embassy during the Japanese colonial period of Taiwan. At the time of it’s completion in 1926 it was considered one of the most beautiful buildings on the island. The Western design with square floor plan and Grecian columns originally served as an administrative office as well as living quarters for the ambassadors and their families. When the United States established a new embassy after WWII this became the residence of the ambassador. I liked that this building has been repurposed as a venue for films and a meeting place rather than a museum. I felt sitting in it’s converted atrium and enjoying the surroundings in an unhurried manner had alot more value as an experience then a walk through a building with roped off areas. Not only did I have a great time hanging out where a U.S. President once stayed I had a pretty interesting selection of movies I could choose to watch, from a documentary about an American photographer turned Buddhist monk to a Japanese man living with a bunch of cats. In 1950 the United States started deploying U.S. military personnel to the island to aid the Republic of China with training, support, and economic relief. Special Western style housing was built for personnel including this almost 14 hectare site in the Yangmingshan area of Taipei City where many houses still remain today. Some of the houses have been leased from the Bank of Taiwan and are occupied by local politicians, artists, and personnel of the American Institute in Taiwan, the defacto U.S. Embassy in Taipei. But it appears many are cafes. The most recent building of the U.S. Taiwan Defense Command era to spring back to life is the Yangminghsan U.S. Military Club, now a Cultural and Creative Park with American style restaurants. This was also the home of the Grass Mountain Teen Club for personnel families. The Bank of Taiwan and a local tech company have invested over $3 million dollars in the renovation which includes a vinyl listening room and museum. Yes they passed the taste test and there are some beautiful grounds and a rooftop deck to enjoy the spectacular Yangminghan Park setting." Getting To The Yangmingshan U.S. Military Housing and Brickyard 33 1/3:Take the Red Line MRT to Shilin, leave Exit 1 and walk to Zhongzheng Rd. Catch Bus #5 to Yangmingshan. The ride will be approximately 20 minutes before you'll get off at the Shanzihou Police Station stop. Walk across the street to Kaixuan Rd. You'll see signs for Brickyard, just follow those and you'll arrive there in about 5 minutes. This is also where you'll see many of the military houses that are either private, cafes, or empty. Getting To the Former U.S. Amassador's Residence(SPOT Taipei Film House) take the MRT Red Line to Zhongshan Station. Walk West along Nanjing East Road to Zongshan Rd. The routing protocol Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS) is an advanced and robust link-state protocol used in many service provider networks. Most of the other enterprises I know of prefer to use protocols like OSPF or EIGRP instead of IS-IS. Therefore, enterprise administrators might not be familiar to this protocol at all. Here I want to share my short note to start IS-IS quickly without digging into protocol details. In case you must configure and maintain an IS-IS network, this note might save you some time. You can follow these five steps to start IS-IS routing protocol in short time.Step 1: Prepare a pool of IPv4 addresses as non-overlapping Router-IDsRouter ID is a unique identifier of any single router. Identifiers are just unique numbers. We know one citizen should have one and only one Citizen Identifier. No two citizens share the same identifier. This is the same for router IDs.No matter we are starting a production network or we just want to practice in lab, my recommendation is to always start from this step. The earlier we do this, the lesser time we might waste afterwards. In addition, I also recommend reserving a pool of IPv4 addresses just for router IDs. This pool should not overlap with any other network addresses. Any host route (/32) in this pool is for a single router. For easier discussion, I assume we reserve 10.0.0.0/16 for router IDs. Router 1 (R1) is assigned router ID: 10.0.0.1/32, and Router 2 (R2) is assigned router ID: 10.0.0.2/32, and so on.This unique host address is not just for identifying a single router. We can use this address for management protocols such as SSH, SNMP, and SSL. We can even add DNS mapping so we don’t have to remember the IPv4 address. For example, R1.MyDomain.COM can be mapped to 10.0.0.1. When I am about to manage a router on command line, all I do is starting a SSH to R1.MyDomain.COM, like “ssh admin@R1.MyDomain.COM”.Step 2: Pick a unique Area ID for Level 1Here I want to emphasis starting from Level 1 (First Floor, Ground Floor) area. My recommendation is always start from Level 1. Expands to Level 2 only when necessary (most of the time we never need Level 2).Area ID is a unique number within 0000 to FFFF in hexadecimal (or 0~65,535 in decimal). If you really want, Area ID Zero (0000) is also a legal IS-IS area number. Area 0000 inIS-IS is just a normal Level 1 area. This is quite different from OSPF. Because we might easily confuse this area with the special OSPF Area Zero (Backbone Area), I recommend avoid using this area number at all. Many connected routers are grouped into a single area. All routers in the same area should be assigned with the same Area ID.For easier discussion, I assume we use Area 7 for Level 1.Step 3: Compose Network Entity Title (NET) for every routerNetwork Entity Title (NET) is really an awkward name for many network administrators. It’s just a name used in ISO documents that define IS-IS protocol. It is the format IS-IS protocol recognizes as Router-ID.You are correct, NET must also be unique, and we must convert the router IDs in Step 1 into this NET format. The question now is “How”.I learned on Cisco Live an easy trick to convert unique IPv4 address into a unique NET. Here you are.First, expand the four decimal numbers of IPv4 address to 3 digits. For example,10.0.0.1 -> 010.000.000.001.Now we have a 12-digit string. Then, we just see this number as hexadecimal in digits, and reposition the “dots” to separate into 3 parts instead of 4. For example,010.000.000.001 -> 0100.0000.0001In case you really want to know, this converted number “0100.0000.0001” is called System ID in IS-IS protocol. We will need this number again when we are expanding the IS-IS network to Level 2 connected topology. Finally, we can create NET now.NET is in a format of 49.[Area ID].[System ID].00.The NET for R1 is now “49.0007.0100.0000.0001.00”.Step 4: Start IS-IS on every routerWe can start IS-IS protocol on every router with the following partial commands.router isis net 49.0007.0100.0000.0001.00 is-type level-1 metric-style wideInterface loopback 999999! This interface is for easier management only. IS-IS doesn’t need it. ip address 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 ipv6 address fd00::1/128 ip router isis ipv6 router isisI purposely neglect the explanation of every components of NET.Step 5: Enable IS-IS on interfaces. It is simpler than you might expect. We look at the network map and every connected interface of every connected router should be enabled with IS-IS protocol, like this example.interface Ethernet0/0 no shutdown ip router isis ipv6 router isisThat’s all. Folks! One more thing…In the partial configuration example above, “interface loopback 999999” is only for easier management. IS-IS doesn’t need this interface at all. We can safely skip it for plain IS-IS practice. We can even assign illegal IPv4 address such as 0.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.2 as router IDs for easier typing IS-IS lab practices. In ISO documents, they don’t call routers as “routers”. They call routers the “Intermediate Systems” instead. Therefore, IS-IS protocol is exactly a protocol for “routers to routers”. Straightforward, isn’t it!Sunset at Gongguan Waterfront Plaza (公館水岸廣場)Taipei City, Taiwan
This is just a short notice for you in case you are not aware of it. Cisco announced a vulnerability on Cisco IOS and IOS XE operating system. For short, you only have to disable incoming TELNET service onto the router itself to avoid this vulnerability. You can use Secure Shell (SSH) instead for remote management. SSH is not vulnerable in this problem. The Jin-Dai Bridge (錦帶橋) in Dahu Park (大湖公園).Taipei City, Taiwan. You can read the original announcement for technical details.Cisco IOS and IOS XE Software Cluster Management Protocol Remote Code Execution VulnerabilityOne more thing…You can disable TELNET service and enable SSH at the same time by this command:transport input sshYou can list listening ports by these commands:show control-plane host open-portsshow tcp brief
Taipei, Taiwan becomes unusually quiet for most of the Chinese New Year holiday as many who work and live in the capital visit family in their hometowns around the island. You'd never believe it though when you visit some of the city's most prominent temples. Overflowing with visitors getting in their good luck prayers to ensure a healthy and prosperous year for themselves and their family. Longshan Temple is by far the most visited with the temple so crowded it's not unusual to get a little poke from someone's incense stick as you make your way through the throngs of people. Guandu Temple near the old fishing village river port town of Danshui is another favorite with many making their yearly visit to the big complex and oldest in Northern Taiwan. Another one of my favorite's to visit, especially on a sunny day, is Zhinan Temple on Monkey Mountain near the Taipei Zoo. Accessible by stairs that start at National Chengchi University, it's an approximate 30-40 hike through the forest and jungle to the temple. If you're not up for the hike the temple can be accessed via the Maokong Gondola near the zoo. The views are wonderful and the temple complex as one visitor shared with me has perfect Feng Shui, the Chinese belief of harmony with surroundings. The main Zhinan complex faces south over a beautiful terrace with views of Taipei City and lots of sunny exposure. The back of the temple is on the mountain side, sheltering it from the inclimate weather of the rainy season and winter. Next to the main Zhinan Temple is the Daxiong Buddhist Chapel, on many days offering a free vegetarian lunch in it's bottom level-a delicious selection of tofu, vegetables, rice, and soup. After lunch I sat in the courtyard of the Daxiong Chapel, listening to the recorded traditional music playing as I gazed out at the hills checkered with small vegetable/produce farms, little tea plantations and the Maokong Gondola transporting people through the hills. Later watching groups paying respects at the temple with offerings and prayers. Feeling refreshed, alive, and full of chi,(good energy), I made my way down the stairs to complete a perfect way to spend a day in Taipei during the Lunar New Year(Chinese New Year), holiday. Getting there:Take the MRT "brown line" to Taipei Zoo. Cross the road from the MRT station and take bus 236 and get off at National Chengchi University. Taipei’s MRT System is super efficient and very easy to get around on with all stops and information in English. If you’re staying in Taipei for more than a day make sure you get an Easy Card pass from the vending machines at all stops or pick-up a 1, 2, 3 or 5 day Taipei Pass at information counters. In this podcast we will make 3 stops on Taipei’s MRT Red Line. First from Main Station we’ll head for Yuanshan stop and the Dalongdong neighborhood, next a ride all the way to the end of the line at Xiangshan for a hike up Elephant Mountain, then back to finish off the afternoon at Liberty Square and the final Honor guard of the day at Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall.Yuanshan is the first elevated stop on the red line that finishes in the riverside village of Danshui. All stops before Yuanshan are underground. This is the old Dalongdong neighborhood with many historic buildings and quiet lanes to explore. Our destination here is the Confucious Temple and the Bao An Temple. Like most sites in Taipei there are English signs everywhere leading you in the right direction whether you look up or down.Confucius was a Chinese teacher, philosopher, editor and politician born in 551 B.C. Confucius was a champion of strong family loyalty, respect of ancestors, and respect of elders by their children among other things. Confuciunism is said to have played a big role in the successful economies of the 4 Asian Tigers. Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan all have had educational programs that taught the values of Confucius-hard work, respect, loyalty, and respect towards authority figures.
