The Florida adventure is in the rear view mirror but I have so many lessons learned from this trip… and I'll share a bunch of them with you here on the takeaways edition to close out the trip. Hold the date… Pedalshift 400 Live will be Friday April 11th at 8pm ET - 5pm PT. Check out Pedlashift on YouTube or pedalshift.net/live for more. Ask Me Anything for sure, the rest is a surprise maybe to me as well? Takeaways from the Jacksonville-to-Orlando Bike Tour Day 1 (Jacksonville to St. Augustine) 1. A Ferry Ride to Kick Things Off – The journey began with a ferry ride across the St. Johns River, adding a scenic and unique element right from the start. Incorporating ferries into bike tours always makes for an enjoyable experience. 2. Gate Code Saves the Day at Anastasia State Park – The planned shortcut to the campsite led to a locked gate, but having the code allowed access without a detour. Avoiding extra miles at the end of a long day was a major win. 3. Improvised Gear Setup on the Brompton – A key piece of the backpack-mounting system was missing, requiring an improvised fix using a monopod and zip ties. The setup held up well throughout the ride, proving that adaptability is key in bike touring. Day 2 (St. Augustine to Flagler Beach Area) 4. Bananas Are the Best Electrolyte Solution – Instead of relying on electrolyte pills, which can cause nausea, bananas proved to be an effective way to prevent leg cramps. A simple, natural solution that made a big difference in managing hydration and muscle recovery. 5. A Route Adjustment Shortened the Day, but It Was Still Challenging – The original 57.7-mile plan changed with a 20-mile fast forward, making for a shorter but still demanding day. Even with the adjustment, Florida's heat, humidity, and terrain required careful pacing and hydration. Day 3 (Port Orange to Rural Central Florida) 6. Headwinds and Humidity Made for a Tough Solo Ride – With no fast forward on this leg, the ride covered the full planned distance through sticky, muggy conditions. After the challenging conditions of the previous day, endurance and smart pacing were crucial to finishing strong. 7. Road Noise at Campgrounds Was a Constant Issue – Unlike remote wilderness bike tours, the campgrounds on this route were consistently noisy, with traffic sounds carrying late into the night. Sleeping conditions were impacted by a combination of humidity and the urban-adjacent settings. Day 4 (Final Push to Disney) 8. A Pre-Dawn Start Took Advantage of Cooler Temperatures – The ride began at 6:15 AM, allowing for several miles before the sun and heat became overwhelming. The early start also meant less traffic and a peaceful stretch along the trail. 9. A Fast Forward to Winter Garden Allowed for New Route Exploration – Instead of repeating a previously ridden portion of the Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail, a fast forward brought the ride to Winter Garden, where new routes could be explored. This decision balanced efficiency with the excitement of seeing something different. 10. A Challenging Finish with More Traffic Than Expected – The final approach onto Disney property was busier than usual, making the last miles more hectic than anticipated. Despite the increased traffic, the ride concluded at the planned finish line, maintaining a long-standing tour tradition.
Dept. of Biology Chair Dr. Jim Gelsleichter, and Associate Professor Dr. Quincy Gibson, share details about the Coastal Marine Biology programs at UNF. Dr. Gibson leads a dolphin research program studying the behaviors of dolphins present in the St. Johns River. Dr. Gelsleichter details how this research and other programs apply to the world abroad, through cooperations with programs like Ocearch, coastal resilience, and more. This research pushes boundaries of biooogical and ecological sciences, and the impacts originate from the local Jacksonville community.

The Saturiwa were a Timucua chiefdom centered on the mouth of the St. Johns River in what is now Jacksonville, Florida. One of the 500 indigenous nations & cultures that blanketed North America, they were a prominent political force in the early days of European settlement in Florida, forging friendly relations and alliances with the French Huguenot settlers at Fort Caroline in Saturiwa territory, in 1564-65. The Saturiwa are so called after their chief at the time of contact with the Europeans, King Saturiwa, who was sovereign over thirty other chiefs and their villages. In this exciting episode of Fishing the DMV, I sit down with Joe Balog, founder of Mighty River Recovery, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring fish and wildlife habitats in Florida's St. Johns River. As a fisheries scientist and passionate advocate for conservation, Joe shares how his organization is tackling habitat decline, uniting freshwater fishing voices, and pushing for better management practices to restore vital ecosystems. We also dive into the importance of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) and how its decline threatens fisheries—not just in Florida, but across the country, including here in Virginia and Maryland. If you're an angler concerned about the loss of SAV in the Potomac River, Chesapeake Bay, or other local waterways, Joe's insights on restoration efforts offer valuable lessons on how we can fight for healthier fisheries in our own backyard. A month-and-a-half and 11-plus-thousand miles after starting this year's North American Waterfowl Road Trip finally arrives to new territory, to the land-time-forgot (so described for reasons discussed herein) province of New Brunswick, Canada. Joining local go-getter hunters Matt Wilson and Stephen Margison, am immersed neck-deep into Maritime Canada waterfowl hunting culture where distances are described relative to time, where directions are described relative to the St. Johns River, and where daily agendas are relative to Canada geese, black ducks and mallards. It's here that was inspired to conform my chicken-fried recipe to local standard (recipe shared). Tropical Storm Helene forecast to become a hurricane today as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico • Tropical Storm Helene is looking "healthier" this morning as it makes its closet approach to the Yucatan Peninsula. • Steady intensification is forecast over the next 12 hours, with more rapid intensification possible beyond that into Thursday. • The forecast continues to call for a major hurricane to landfall in between Apalachicola and Cedar Key late Thursday. Shifts are possible and impacts will occur far from the landfall point due to the expected large size of the storm. • A track closer to, or even east of, Cedar Key would heighten our local impacts. A track closer to Apalachicola would lessen them quite dramatically. • Timeline based on the current forecast: o Wednesday: Increasing clouds and slowly increasing winds becoming breezy at the beaches by the afternoon. A few showers with gusty winds will be possible in the afternoon/evening. o Wednesday Night/Thursday Morning: Cloudy and windy, with rain bands lifting from south to north. These will have the potential to produce isolated tornadoes/waterspouts. o Mid-Day Thursday: Still cloudy and windy, but there could be a sizable break in the rain. o Thursday Afternoon/Evening: More rain bands pivot in around the storm. These will contain an even greater risk for tornadoes and water spouts, and some tropical storm force wind gusts. o Thursday Night: Helene makes landfall between 8 and 10 pm with the core of the storm pushing hurricane conditions inland to Columbia County (Lake City) and perhaps as far inland as Waycross in gusts. o Friday Morning: A few wrap-around gusty showers, but rapidly improving weather by late-morning into the afternoon. • Minor to moderate flooding will be possible Thursday evening and overnight along the St. Johns River, its tributaries, and coastal areas prone to flooding. Some minor storm surge will be possible along the NE FL coast during a period of onshore winds. Slightly higher surge is possible across the SE GA coastline. • So overall, manageable impacts across our metro with sporadic tree and power issues. Minimal flooding threat. Greater impact inland closer to the core of the storm. Magnitude of impacts still track-dependent. TODAY: Becoming mostly cloudy and breezy. Showers arrive late in the afternoon and evening. High: 88 TONIGHT: Cloudy with a swath of rain moving in. Winds begin to increase a bit at the coast. LOW: 75 THURSDAY: First Alert Weather Day. Tracking Helene. Cloudy and humid with rain and wind. Isolated tornadoes possible. 75/85 FRIDAY: Helene quickly moves away as we see decreasing clouds with a few breezy showers/storms. 75/88 SATURDAY: Partly sunny with a few showers. 75/89 SUNDAY: Partly sunny with a few showers. 72/86 MONDAY: Partly to mostly cloudy with a few showers. 73/86 TUESDAY: Partly sunny with a few showers. 70/86
Tropical disturbance getting better organized in the Western Caribbean Sea, Local Impacts Wednesday night into Thursday • Thunderstorms have increased around the center of the tropical disturbance overnight. • A tropical storm will likely form this morning or later today in the Western Caribbean Sea. • Forecasts currently develop this into a "major" hurricane on approach to the northeast Gulf Coast by Thursday afternoon/evening. Conditions are favorable for strengthening. • As of now, the favored area for a potential landfall would be in between Apalachicola and Cedar Key late Thursday. Shifts are possible and impacts will occur far from the landfall point, especially east of it. • The wind field with this hurricane will be expansive. Do not focus just on the center. • A track closer to, or even east of, Cedar Key would heighten our local impacts. A track closer to Apalachicola would lessen them quite dramatically. • Based on the current forecast: o Late Wednesday: We can expect rain bands to lift across our area in the late afternoon through the night. They'll contain quick-hitting heavy rain, gusty winds, and the potential for isolated tornadoes/waterspouts. o Into Thursday: Rain and wind impacts would increase the farther west one goes, currently expected to be most significant between Lake City and Waycross. Hurricane conditions will be possible there, with intermittent tropical storm conditions possible elsewhere. Saturated grounds from early September rain may make older trees more susceptible to falling. o Very hazardous beach conditions are expected, with high surf, rip currents, and likely some beach erosion, especially during the higher-than-normal king tides. o Minor to moderate flooding expected Thursday evening and Friday morning along the St. Johns River, its tributaries, and coastal areas prone to flooding. o Into Friday mid-day Friday: Conditions area-wide should quickly improve as the storm pulls inland, perhaps causing significant damage as far north as Atlanta. o Wind speeds, surge height and rain totals are highly dependent on the exact track of "Helene." o Sustained winds could be at or near tropical storm force at our local beaches Thursday afternoon/evening, especially in gusts. o Wind gusts will be 50-70+ mph with the current forecast. Higher gusts are likely closer to I-75 and offshore from the NE Florida coastline. o At least some storm surge is likely along the NE Florida coastline with the onshore winds. • Tropical storm watches are in effect for SW Florida and the Keys. • Expect hurricane and storm surge watches to be extended north to include parts of the Central and NE Gulf Coast this morning. • Latest “Talking the Tropics with Mike”, updated daily. Reminder for the newsroom: • Full updates with a new track are at 5 AM / 11 AM / 5 PM / 11 PM • Intensity and position updates (no new track) are at 2 AM / 8 AM / 2 PM / 8 PM. TODAY: Mostly sunny. HIGH: 91 TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Low: 72 WEDNESDAY: Becoming mostly cloudy and breezy. Showers late. 72/88 THURSDAY: First Alert Weather Day: Tracking the tropics. Cloudy and humid with rain and wind. Isolated tornadoes possible. 75/85 FRIDAY: Helene moving quickly north. Decreasing clouds with a few showers/storms. 75/88 SATURDAY: Partly sunny with a few showers/storms. 75/89 SUNDAY: Partly sunny with a few showers/storms. 75/86 MONDAY: Partly to mostly cloudy with a few showers/storms. 73/86

In 1812, during the East Florida Patriot War incursion against Spanish territorial rule, 15-year-old Louisa Fatio barely escaped when Seminole attacked and partially burned her family's beautiful New Switzerland plantation on the St. Johns River. Louisa was the granddaughter of Francis Philip Fatio, co-founder and later sole owner of the 10,000-acre New Switzerland plantation, west of St. Augustine. Frantically searching for safety throughout the wilderness of Florida, her family first endured the bloody Patriots' War only to see their new house destroyed by a hurricane. Next, they sought haven in Fernandina until invading pirates burned that property to the ground. Fleeing once more, the Fatios returned and rebuilt New Switzerland Plantation between 1822 and 1824, where Louisa becomes its charming hostess. The New Switzerland plantation was torched a second time by Seminole during the Second Seminole War, which began in 1835. The next year, 1836, Louisa Fatio moved to St. Augustine, where she remained for the rest of her life. The city was filled with military personnel and refugees from the war, and she found work managing boarding houses with her sister Eliza. There, she used her keen business sense and hospitality to create a career as an innkeeper - one of the few respectable occupations available to a woman of her standing in her day. Under her management, the house on Aviles Street became known as Miss Fatio's. Soon Miss Fatio's lovely and famous boarding house began to offer the best lodging and the finest table in tropical Florida. The establishment was a fixture in St. Augustine until her death in 1875. Louisa Fatio is the subject of a one-woman performance by Florida thespian, Dianne Thompson Jacoby. In this episode, Dianne slips into her impression of Louisa to tell the story of East Florida in the St. Augustine vicinity during the Seminole Wars period. BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 150: Free the Ocklawaha River! Almost 60 years ago, the U.S. government, blinded by hubris, began work on the Cross Florida Barge Canal. Never heard of it? That's because President Richard Nixon, seeing it for the financial and ecological monstrosity that it was, halted the project in 1971 before it was halfway completed. All that remains of the bad idea is Rodman Dam, completed in 1968 to raise water levels enough to make the canal usable. The Rodman Dam blocked the free flow of the incredible Ocklawaha River, inundated 20 mighty freshwater springs, flooded miles of timber and bottomland wildlife habitat and, most importantly, cut the Ocklawaha and its tributaries off from the St. Johns River and the Atlantic Ocean, causing a cascade of losses to wildlife, water, fisheries and human beings. Now the time has come to remove Rodman Dam and restore these connections. Hal talks about the dam – its history and potential future – with Lisa Rinaman of the St. Johns' Riverkeeper and retired game warden and author Bob Lee, who has spent his professional life protecting the game and fish of the Ocklawaha. Join us to consider one of the major restoration projects of our time.

This week's podcast is with Cheryl Corriveau (The Demanding River, Fulton Books, July 2021). We discuss how Cheryl tapped into her own experiences running a boat dealership in Florida when she outlined the plot of her debut including dealing with hurricanes, drug dealers and blatant misogyny, her persistence in searching for a way to publish her novel, and why she's known in her neighborhood as Mrs. Fierce. Cheryl Corriveau is a native Floridian. Being an only child, her parents instilled in her that the word can't didn't exist. She has always been an entrepreneur. After her day of teaching high school students, she coached the girls' basketball B, and tennis teams. She also taught evening real estate licensing classes. She spent her summer months at CBS Network as their pilot television program coordinator. After twenty years, she retired from the classroom and became education director of a large real estate franchise corporation. Cheryl has owned and operated several businesses—a real estate corporation, an aerial photography business, a commercial interior design business. Her love for boats led her to become the sole proprietor of a boat dealership on the St. Johns River. Her real-life experiences in the boating business inspired her to write the fiction novel The Demanding River.

On May 3, 2019, Miami Air Flight 293, a Boeing 737 that took off from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, attempted to land at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. The jet overshot the runway and eventually settled in a shallow part of the St. Johns River. There were seven crew members and 136 passengers on board the plane at the time of the crash. Of that, 21 people received minor injuries and three pets were trapped inside the plane's cargo hold. On Wednesday, the National Transportation Safety Board released its full report on the crash. The report cites weather as a big factor but cited other factors as well. In the moments before the flight was set to land at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, the flight suddenly changed its path due to the inclement weather, according to the NTBS report. However, the change led the flight through the center of the storm cell. At the time of the crash, there was heavy rain, thunderstorms and wind at about 8 knots, or around 9 mph. Wind gusts reached as high as 16 knots, or about 18 mph, according to the report. These factors also caused low visibility of about three miles. Captain Gabriel Cosentino, 55, was at the controls and had worked for Miami Air since March 2008, the report says. He had 7,500 hours of flying time prior to the crash. In an interview with investigators, he said he had flown into NAS Jax between five to ten times. Cosentino also told investigators, "There was no concern about the weather, as the flight route took them west of it," the report says. He added he, "...did not remember the weather report received from the approach control," and called the landing, "pretty smooth," according to the report. Cosentino has not been involved in any other accidents or incidents with Miami Air and was never disciplined for his prior job performance, according to the report. First Officer Claudio Marcelo Jose La Franca, 47, and was fairly new to the company. He was hired in October 2018 and began training in January 2019, according to the report. He also had about 7,500 hours of flight experience prior to the crash. In his interview, he told investigators, "...that there were thunderstorms developing," and he, "...recalled last seeing the airspeed at 100 knots and they were getting close to the end of the runway and not slowing," the report says. It was his first flight to NAS Jax. The report also reveals one of the two evacuation door slides failed to inflate as did one 46-person life raft. There were four life rafts on board. The investigation finds the life raft's inflation hoses were not connected and states a review of the maintenance procedures where the parts were last tested is needed for a risk assessment.

In the late 1880s or early 1890s, an aquatic plant known as water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) was introduced to Florida. In 1812, the United States government tried to annex Spanish East Florida by a combination of covert action and direct invasion. Then the plan went horribly wrong. The “Patriots' War'” in Spanish East Florida during 1812-13 was an early example of a military disaster caused by a secret, flawed political policy. The characteristics of this fiasco bear an uncomfortable resemblance to the United States' undeclared wars in the late 20th century—covert paramilitary operations, convoluted chains of command, restrictive rules of engagement, Congress at odds with the president, and increasing public dissatisfaction. As always, the troops paid the highest price for bad policy. Marine Captain John Williams was one of the few regular military officers assigned to bolster the American government's shadowy effort to subvert Spanish colonial authority in the territory and ultimately annex it to the United States. He had become frustrated by political constraints that conceded the first shot to any adversary. His Marines were increasingly vulnerable to attacks by bands of Seminoles and blacks, who were armed and directed by East Florida's Spanish governor. The Spanish-organized guerrillas had no such restrictions. On the night of September 12, 1812, they ambushed Captain Williams and his Marines in Twelve Mile Swamp, northwest of St. Augustine. The Marines fought fearlessly, averting a massacre, but their leader was mortally wounded. The ambush of Williams' force toppled the ill-advised plot to annex East Florida by armed diplomacy. American forces, their lines of communication effectively severed, immediately abandoned their five-month siege of St. Augustine and retreated toward the St. Johns River. The eventual evacuation of all U.S. troops from Florida ended one of the most disgraceful chapters in American military history. Show notes at https://thedigressionpodcast.com/46 Sound Off! It's Whatever You Want Wednesday, and today's topics range from the crashed Miami Air jet being tugged up the St. Johns River, to the DCSB proposed 1/2 cent sales tax, to Trump's tax records, offensive bumper stickers, and we give away flowers for Mother's Day!
The guys traveled to Palatka for the final round of the BASSmaster Elite Series event, taking in all the excitement and bringing you all the action. This show also gave us a chance to show off the amazing fishery that is the St. Johns River!
The Bassmaster Elite Series comes to Palatka next week, and local superstar angler Cliff Prince is the favorite to win it! He joined the guys in-studio to talk about the tournament and how he handles the St. Johns River. Throw in a great story from Kevin about his latest hog hunt, and you have an episode you cannot miss.

It's time once again for GastroFest 2018! This is the 4th annual GastroFest happening in a new location this year. This year you will find GastroFest at Friendship Fountain on the Southbank of the St. Johns River. On the podcast, I'm speaking to Erin Thursby. She is the creative force behind the concept and execution of GastroFest. I had a chance to sit down with her recently to discuss what to expect this year. There will be a kid Zone as well as Homebrew competition! There are plenty of vegan options, so go check out more information over at www.gastrojax.org Gastro Fest is a celebration of local food and drinks with an emphasis on being green. It's important to know that no plastic will be allowed at the event this year. In fact, use the #greeninggastrofest in your social media posts and every time you do and pair it with a picture of you doing something green, you will be entered into a drawing for fun prizes and rewards! All the details for can be found at www.gastrojax.org

In this episode, we review our recent sailing trip over 4th of July weekend cruising around Biscayne bay in Miami. Intro News We released new YouTube videos! We have a video of how we have our boat setup form cruising showing the interior and exterior setup. We also have the first video produced by Brandy! She released a video of our trip cruising near Ft. Desoto / St. Petersburg, Florida and the Everglade Challenge sailing race where small sailboats and paddlers travel 300 miles down to the Florida Keys. We are catching up on releasing podcasts. Our goal is to release two a month, we have ten so far this year, so we are two behind but we plan to catch up over next couple months. We have some great interviews coming up with the Crew of Follow the Boat and another we a trailer sailor that did some extensive cruising before moving to an offshore cruising boat. This weekend we are cruising the St. Johns River and anchoring in Silver Glen Springs. Come out and join us if you are in the area. You can drive to the county park and wade out to the boats. Biscayne Bay cruising review We originally planned to go to the Ft. Pierce and Stewart area, but the disgusting blue green algae bloom changed our plans. The impact we have on ecosystems is very sad. We decided to head further south and cruise around Biscayne Bay in Miami, a great cruising ground with beautiful water and great sailing. We will add detail notes and links on the trip in the next few days. We ran out of time before releasing the episode. Sailing News - Links to be added soon Product of the Week Solo 1 Litre Pressure Sprayer We love this little sprayer for rinsing off after a swim in salt water. Also great for a quick cool off on a hot summer day.
