Welcome back to Strong + Unfiltered. Today's episode is a solo Q&A all about hormone replacement therapy, perimenopause, progesterone, estrogen, blood clot myths, and the massive amount of misinformation women are still being fed about hormones. We're diving into the REAL differences between birth control and bioidentical HRT, what the WHI study actually did (and didn't) show, why some women are safer ON estrogen than off of it, and why "just wait until menopause" is outdated advice that's keeping women suffering unnecessarily. I also break down pellets, PCOS and HRT, cyclic estrogen dosing, how I monitor hormones in practice, and why symptoms like anxiety, rage, fatigue, sleep issues, brain fog, joint pain, and "not feeling like yourself" may absolutely be connected to perimenopause long before your periods disappear. If you've ever been told your labs are "normal" while you feel exhausted, anxious, inflamed, ragey, wide awake at 2am, or completely unlike yourself… this episode is for you. **Clay Edwards Show – Grills of Mississippi: Always Grilling Season & the Best Pellets in the State** Clay lights up the airwaves with a passionate sponsor read for Grills of Mississippi on Highway 51 North in Ridgeland, declaring it's **always** grilling season — rain, snow, sleet, or hail, real grillers are out there flipping meat like the postman delivers mail. He raves about their premium selection of Weber grills, Yoder smokers, and full outdoor kitchen setups that turn any backyard into the ultimate gathering spot.   What really gets him fired up is their top-tier smoking pellets, grown right here in the Southeast instead of the dusty desert pellets from out West that clog fire starters and ruin cooks. Clay shares his own experience of switching to Grills of Mississippi pellets and how it fixed his smoker issues, then recounts how Tracy and Jonathan patiently walked him through cooking the perfect prime rib — step-by-step, no talking down — and it turned out flawless. They also stock the best rubs, sauces, and seasonings with a free sample rack so you can try everything before you buy, plus high-quality meats like lard-injected pork chops, tri-tip, brisket, and what Clay calls the best boudin on the planet.   These aren't just salespeople — they're genuine enthusiasts who started as hobbyists and turned it into a labor of love. Unfiltered, no sugar added reality radio at its finest.

163: The Truth About Hormone Pellets for Women: 10 Reasons I'll Never Recommend Them

Confession #163: I can't emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, or physically bring myself to recommend hormone pellets for women. And after years of seeing the complications in clinical practice… I stand by that. Hormone pellets are small implants placed under the skin that release hormones like testosterone or estrogen over the course of 3-6 months. They're often marketed as the "easy," or "best" form of hormone replacement therapy for women, but in my experience, as a Double Board-Certified OBGYN and Integrative Medicine physician, many women are never told the full story before getting them. I've seen patients first-hand struggle with: • Hormone levels that spike too high • Hair loss and acne • Mood changes and anxiety • Irregular absorption • Testosterone side effects that can become permanent • Feeling "stuck" once the pellets are inserted And yes… I tried pellets myself years ago. It was one of the worst experiences I've personally had with hormone therapy. The reality is: there are often more personalized and adjustable ways to use bioidentical hormones, including topical creams, troches, rapid dissolve tablets, and other delivery methods that allow dosing changes without locking someone into months of exposure. In this episode, I break down: • How hormone pellets actually work • Why pellets can create unstable hormone patterns • The biggest risks women are rarely warned about • Why pellet therapy has become such a profitable business model • The problem with protocol-driven hormone care • Why individualized treatment matters in women's health • What to do if you already have pellets and want to transition off safely • Bioidentical hormones vs synthetic hormones explained The truth is: Hormone replacement therapy should never be one-size-fits-all. Women deserve personalized care, informed consent, evidence-based medicine, and treatment plans that can adapt as their bodies change. If you've ever been told pellets are your ONLY option… this episode is for you.

I'm your host, Kellie Lupsha, a high-performance health coach, who is delighted to be your guide to vitality. In this episode, I'm sitting down with Dr. Heidi to cut through the noise surrounding one of the most requested topics in women's health right now: hormone replacement therapy. We've all heard the recent conversations about how it's finally safer to explore, but I know so many of you are still sitting there wondering where to actually begin. Which delivery method should I even ask for? How do I start that conversation with my practitioner without feeling lost? Today, we're pulling back the curtain on the real pros, cons, and hidden mechanics behind the most common options, plus sharing exactly how we would approach our own health journey.Key Highlights:➡️ Why it's never too late to finally bring up hormone therapy with your provider.➡️ How the most popular delivery methods actually interact with your body.➡️ Why steady, consistent dosing matters more than chasing quick fixes.➡️ The everyday realities and trade-offs of using patches versus pellets.➡️ Why certain topical creams and injections might be undermining your progress.➡️ The realistic timeline you should wait before safely considering a dosage adjustment.➡️ How to strategically choose your starting point among estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.➡️ Why tuning into your body's daily feedback matters just as much as the numbers on your lab report.Key Takeaways:“And I guess the only downfall is if you really work consistent on the dose you needed, it's a little harder to change.” -Kellie Lupsha"Testosterone is kind of the... leader actually... women have more testosterone made in our body than a man does... because we have to downregulate it into more estrogens." -Dr. Heidi1️⃣ JOIN US IN THE WOMEN'S LONGEVITY & WELLNESS HUB!A Functional Medicine, Wellness, and Coaching Membership designed just for women over 50. Spring is finally starting to show itself in Richard's garden this week, with early sowings going into the ground, the greenhouse warming up, and both the allotment and kitchen garden shaking off winter. From experimenting with early carrots to juggling seedlings on every available surface, and finishing with a fascinating conversation about soil health and wool‑based fertilisers, it's been a week full of momentum and inspiration. In the Allotment Richard began the week with a touch of gardener's guilt after a rare day away at a photography show. But despite that, the allotment is progressing well. Cloches and black membrane have been warming the soil, creating ideal conditions for the first early carrots of the year. As he explained, “when you have consistently same soil… the carrots don't fork” — the reason behind his decision to grow them in concrete tubes filled with fresh compost. Parsnips also went in, earlier than he would normally attempt, but with the hope of an early harvest. Around the site, spring is unmistakably arriving: nettles, gooseberries, blackberries and even the neighbour's plot are showing signs of life. Compost continues to be added to empty beds, and Richard reflected on the ongoing debate about whether spring or winter is best. As he put it, “adding compost to the soil is a good thing… when the beds are empty is when we add the compost”. Green manures are still doing their job too, being chopped and dropped to feed the soil before a layer of compost goes on top. In the Kitchen Garden Back home, the mix of frosty mornings and warm afternoons has created perfect conditions for more sowing. Carrots and parsnips have gone in again under cloches, acting as a backup to the allotment. Richard also shared how his polyculture experiment is progressing. It's a learning curve, but already proving interesting: “You really do have to think about what you're sowing and where and when those plants are going to be ready for harvesting.” The veggie pods are now filled with lettuce, spring onions and cut‑and‑come‑again salads — a setup he has relied on for years. Indoors, tomatoes, courgettes, pumpkins and more are filling every available space, with cold frames warming up ready for the next wave of seedlings. Inside the greenhouse, watering has become a daily reminder. As Richard noted, “a greenhouse doesn't get rain on the inside” — something many gardeners forget at this time of year. Recipe of the Week This week's dish was a bright, seasonal plate of purple sprouting broccoli with lemon butter and orzo. Quick, simple, and a perfect way to celebrate one of the best crops of early spring. Interview: Eddie from Traditional Garden Growers In the podding shed, you welcomed Eddie from traditional Garden Growers — a grower with a passion for soil science and regenerative methods. His journey from Harper Adams to market gardening, and now to producing natural fertilizers, made for a fascinating conversation. One standout moment was his explanation of wool pellets. Older farmers used belly wool and daggings on their veg patches, and Eddie has revived that tradition in a modern form. As he explained, wool pellets: Increase water‑holding capacity Boost microbial activity Release nutrients slowly Provide natural nitrogen and potassium He also introduced other products: Power Plant Pellets — digestate‑based rocket fuel for hungry crops Thatcher's Mulch — pelletised straw that expands into a weed‑suppressing, moisture‑retaining mulch Compost Booster — a brown‑matter solution for slimy, green‑heavy compost heaps It was a brilliant discussion on soil health, sustainability, and making the most of undervalued natural resources. When it comes to testosterone pellets vs injections for men, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer, and that's the point of this episode. We walk through how we help patients decide between weekly (or twice-weekly) injections and 4–5 month pellets, and why creams often don't reach the same therapeutic effect for many men. We also talk about why symptoms and day-to-day function matter more than chasing a single “normal” number. You'll learn the practical differences between testosterone pellets vs injections for men, from convenience and dosing to follow-up and lifestyle fit. We explain how we monitor energy, focus, libido, sleep quality, and training recovery, and how we adjust safely over time. We'll touch on when splitting an injection dose makes sense and when a pellet schedule fits better. Our goal is to help you feel like yourself again, using a plan that's personalized, medically supervised, and realistic for your life. If you're comparing testosterone pellets vs injections for men and want guidance grounded in experience, this breakdown will help you make an informed choice.Visit this link to learn more: https://www.alluremedical.com/Subscribe to the podcast and leave a 5-star review! You can also catch this show on our YouTube channel and on all your favorite podcast platforms.Read the latest research and advice from the doctors at Allure Medical: https://www.alluremedical.com/books/ Dr. Charles Mok received his medical degree from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Chicago, Illinois in 1989. Today, Brad brings on University of Minnesota Extension colleague Jim Salfer to talk through the state of dairy automation. Robots are still going in across the Upper Midwest, but they're also coming out—and the “why” depends on farm goals, labor, barn design, and cash flow.HighlightsAdoption reality: Robots are spreading, yet many farms are re-evaluating fit. Large herds often lean toward automated rotaries (pre- and post-sprays) for sheer throughput; small to mid-size herds may benefit most from box robots—especially when barn flow and labor fit the model.Repair costs that pencil: Plan for $10–12k per robot per year once out of warranty, with $500–$1,000 annual increases as units age. Under warranty is lower; 24/7 equipment inevitably costs more to maintain.Troubleshooting visits: Dips from ~2.7–2.9 milkings/day to ~2.2–2.3 crush production and are hard to diagnose (cow behavior, nutrition, traffic, hardware hiccups).Feeding in robots: Trend has shifted from “all pellets through the robot” to less robot feed overall. Pellets remain reliable; meals can work but often require hardware tweaks (vibrators/lines) and some herds struggle with consistency. Multiple feeds can help target fresh cows but isn't mandatory.Used robots are viable: Dealer-refreshed, recent-model used units can be half (or less) the cost of new. Expect less warranty and potentially higher repairs, but they're a solid on-ramp for younger or capital-tight producers.Rotaries & partial automation: Pre/post sprayers are getting better and can deliver impressive efficiency. Full robotic attachment on rotaries remains complex due to eye-hand coordination challenges, but incremental automation keeps improving labor per hundred cows.Batch milking with box robots: A compelling middle path for pasture-based or capital-limited farms—bring cows up 2–3× daily, run them through multiple boxes, and send them back. You won't maximize 24/7 robot utilization, but you may optimize labor and cash while managing cows like a traditional system.Capital strategy matters: Highly automated, all-robot barns can tie up capital and slow growth; retrofitting modest parlors can free cash to grow cow numbers. Match the system to your growth goals.Crystal ball: Expect three lanes to coexist—(1) retrofit parallels, (2) large new rotaries (increasingly automated), and (3) robots for small/mid herds—plus combo herds (rotary + a robot barn for elite “robot cows”).Bottom line: There's no one “right” technology. Choose the milking system that fits your labor pool, barn flow, capital plan, and temperament for tech and troubleshooting—not what worked for your neighbor.Chapter markers00:00 – Cold open, guest intro & breed banter (Red Angus; black-and-white Holsteins)03:21 – Why talk robots now? I was recently asked, "What's the difference between hay pellets and hay cubes?" It made for a fun conversation (if you're a horse nutrition geek like I am) and I thought it would be a good discussion. Pellets and cubes are obviously forage alternatives that originate from hay - pellets are from ground hay and cubes are chopped and compressed. There are different reasons one may add a pellet vs. a cube to a horse's diet, if at all. What about the horse who can't even chew hay anymore? Or if you are having trouble finding good quality forage, and you'd like to improve the forage your horse is consuming? We'll touch on all of that and more in this episode, along with pros and cons. And of course, there's a little beet pulp mixed in...Additional reading: From the Rutgers University Equine Science Center, "Lord Nelson's Blog:"https://esc.rutgers.edu/do-you-know-your-forage-alternatives/Kentucky Equine Research: Hay Cubes and Pellets for Horseshttps://ker.com/equinews/hay-cubes-pellets-horses/

Things Discussed: Pre-show Tiger Talk: The trick is blowing out arms and managing your pitching staff. Tigers lost 4/5 starters from their expected rotation so they had to do the Bill James thing and do away with them. The way: counter the top of the order with a reliever, have your "starter" pitch 1.5 times through the lineup, go to your bullpen when you get back to the top of the order so the best hitters are never seeing the same pitcher twice. What a year: Tigers, Lions, and Michigan won playoff games in 2024 and the Wings and Pistons did not. Washington slip-ups: What can you fix, what can you not? Time to replace Evan Link—Persi is fine. Gonna go with Tuttle; that won't be a panacea but apparently they were preparing for him all along. Get Jyaire Hill some cleats. Defensively what's the problem? On standard downs they're elite, on passing downs they get too creative, and they're creating busts. Zeke Berry is not Mike Sainristil. You don't play Jyaire Hill like he's Aamir Hall: have him roll up and play some man. Makari Paige: he's a senior but he's not a Peppers who can line up at the LB level and run with Giles Jackson. Mitigating factors: Minter and Mac had long ramp-ups not Texas, USC and @Washington in their first three games. Wink came in thinking he gets to run an NFL defense and he's not used to playing with guys who have major holes in their games. Similarity to early Mac defenses: It wasn't until Week 8 that they could adjust to tempo (and even then they got caught in late changes). Macdonald came in running weird stuff and then learned to trust his best players. Evan Link: Brian still has him grading out terribly, Craig thought he's been better. Sam thinks Persi deserves a shot to start at RT. The "HOT coverage"—coach Twitter can come up with some reason it makes sense, but if you're running something you can't run that's on the coaches. Also it was tempo and Guy didn't know what was happening. Wink dialed it back for Arkansas State and Minnesota, but when he's under pressure he reverts to his weird stuff. Gotta know you don't have to be the answer; you can let your guys be the answer. Last offseason was a failure. This offseason is going to make or break this staff. Tuttle is not going to fix everything. He had a two-man route and a "you gotta throw that" to Amorion Walker in single coverage and didn't pull the trigger, then fumbled. His interception was way behind his target. Washington was slipping too. But when they fell over it's just because they suck at this. Did they not water the turf? Was it on purpose to give UW an edge? Let's create a pellets conspiracy! THAT WAS A JOKE; READERS I SWEAR TO G-D DO NOT CREATE A WET PELLETS CONSPIRACY.
