Conditions on the breeding grounds have improved since the drought years of the 1980s, but human action has also made a huge difference. You can help by purchasing a duck stamp every year. This week on the Ohio Huntsman Podcast we discuss the recent changes related to the artwork for the federal duck stamp. The federal duck stamp has provided an enormous amount of conservation dollars for waterfowl habitat and the bulk of that money comes from waterfowl hunters. In order to show appreciation for that contribution, there was a requirement added to the artwork competition. The artwork for the stamp for 2021 had to include a hunting aspect in order to be chosen. This requirement was removed after this year, so we discussed what we thought about the change and also what precedence a change like this could set for future decisions being made. We also discussed if we felt like this was an attempt to further separate hunters from the millions of conservation dollars they raise. Ohio Huntsman is powered by Simple Cast.
This week on The Great Outdoors, Charlie tells us about the new duck stamp ruling and how to keep your furry hunting companion safe this season.
Birding editor Ted Floyd joins host Nate Swick to once again chat about recent birding experiences in eBird Annotated. This time Ted and Nate have been on the road, birding in places that meant something to them in the past. For Ted, this is Pittsburgh's Frick Park, and for Nate, Sannibel Island in south Florida. As promised, enjoy their eBird checklists yourself! Brothers Sam & Josh Soholt, owners of Public Land Tees, take a break from turkey camp to join host Bob St.Pierre for a chat about their love of hunting and their commitment to conservation. Highlighted during the discussion is the brother’s “Conservation Crossing” effort, which is helping Pheasants Forever, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, Mule Deer Foundation, Delta Waterfowl, and National Wild Turkey Federation generate members through a creative t-shirt promotion. Episode Highlights: • The brothers talk about their motivations for donating $5 from every Public Land Tees product they sell toward conservation efforts. They also tell the story of developing the “Stamp it Forward” promotion that has helped generate thousands of Duck Stamp sales, and in turn, funding for upland and wetland habitat. • The Soholt’s also participated in the Public Lands Pavilion at National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic 2020 in Minneapolis that helped create the new Cupido Wildlife Management Area which will be formally dedicated on August 6th in western Minnesota as a new public property open to all. • The guys have a funny discussion about the Conservation Crossing t-shirt design and how it riffs off the Beatle’s Abbey Road album cover design. In this short Bonus Episode of Leupold's Hunt Talk Radio, Randy returns to discuss "Stamp It Forward," a creative conservation idea put together by Sam and Josh Soholt. Topics covered include what Duck Stamps pay for, the history of the duck stamp, National Wildlife Refuge system, waterfowl hunting, how you can help, and other side notes that hopefully make you aware of how important the Duck Stamp program is for conservation of many species, not just waterfowl.
Nate & Evan travel to White Oak Park in Bloomington, Illinois to track down the Black Bellied Whistling duck, Yellow-headed Blackbird, and Least Bittern. They also discuss the recent release of the Duck Stamp, Great Egret, Belted Kingfisher and Northern Rough-winged Swallow. During recording they have a 3 year old special guest drop by to discuss chocolate milk and Evan forgets to turn his phone off.
In recent years it has seemed as though doing an ABA Area Big Year means that you have to write a book about it, but the form's roots can be traced to Roger Tory Peterson himself. What makes them so popular? Are they travelogue, sporting conquest, adventure, or some combination? Or is the appeal as simple as wish fulfillment? 10,000 Birds media reviewer Donna Schulman and Birding magazine media review editor Frank Izaguirre join host Nate Swick to talk about Big Year narratives and what makes them great in the first edition of the ABP Birding Book Club. Also, the USFWS disappoints with new rules for the Duck Stamp. ABA members are eligible for a 15% discount to Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Birds of the World subscription. Host Keith Crowley talks with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Historian Mark Madison about J.M. "Ding" Darling, the creator of the Duck Stamp and the Director of the Bureau of Biological Survey (predecessor to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.) Darling was a Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist who had a knack for getting the most out of people when it came to conservation. Because of his leadership, his forethought and his political skills, billions of dollars have been raised for conservation over the past 80+ years through the Duck Stamp Act and the Pittman-Robertson Act. Darling also created the artwork for the first Duck Stamp in 1934 as well as the flying goose symbol found at National Wildlife Refuges across America. Darling was a passionate hunter and passionate leader fighting for the preservation of the outdoor life he loved. Madison and Crowley discuss Ding's relationships with both Teddy Roosevelt (whom he admired as a personal friend and as the President) and Franklin Roosevelt (who he disliked politically, but grew to respect,) as well as his close friendship with President Herbert Hoover. Our host also explains his love of the Ding Darling Refuge on Sanibel Island in FloridaRelated Information:Ding Darling BioHistory of the Duck StampDarling Editorial Cartoon ArchivesBye Now, It's Been Wonderful Knowing You (Ding's Farewell Cartoon, published posthumously.)Images from Ding Darling National Wildlife RefugeDarling's Comic which won his first Pultizer_______________________________________________________________Theme Music: Grip of the Black GoldSongwriter: Steve BlexrudPerformed by Steve Blexrud and Thunderheads_______________________________________________________________Books by Keith CrowleyPheasant Dogs: Stories from the FieldGordon MacQuarrie: The Story of an Old Duck HunterWildlife in the Badlands Keith Crowley's published wildlife and sporting photography can be found at CrowleyImages.com

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed a new regulation requiring that in the future, every Federal Duck Stamp depict an element of hunting rather than allowing art depicting wild ducks in natural habitat. Laura says, "Just say no!" Why? (This program must air by March 16, 2020.)

3 Billion breeding birds have been lost in the last 40 years in the US and Canada. These are certainly sobering numbers. This was the conclusion of a paper published recently in the journal Science, and the core of the 2019 State of the Birds report. This report, spearheaded by American Bird Conservancy, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Canadian Wildlife Service, and others certainly made waves among the general public as much as in the birding community, and it seems to have really resonated. Jordan Rutter, director of public relations at the American Bird Conservancy, and Birding magazine editor Ted Floyd join me to talk about this study, what it means, and what you can do about it. Also, the 2020 Duck Stamp has been chosen, and it's a really sharp one. Thanks to Turismo de Lisboa for sponsoring this episode.
Fantasy Sports is big business these day, especially now that participants no longer have to do the work by hand. It’s so popular that managing virtual worlds based on real world data has spread beyond sports. Fantasy Birding has become a obsession among a growing cadre of real birders, it has been featured in a number of general interest articles, it was lightly mocked on the NPR show Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, and it’s taken hold of a handful of my colleagues at the ABA. Matt Smith is a computer programmer and birder and is the creator of Fantasy Birding. He joins host Nate Swick to talk about the wild ride. Also, some potential changes to the Duck Stamp that seem to cause more harm than good, and Nate reminisces about an amazing trip to Costa Rica with an amazing group of young naturalists. Thanks to Zeiss Sports Optics for sponsoring this episode of the American Birding Podcast.
The stoke is high for Ben and Bill's upcoming trips to Man Camp (People Camp) in West Virginia and to Colorado for the Outdoor Retailer Show. Bill's music recommendation is TroubleFunk, out of Washington DC.

Texas Public Land Hunting & Beyond Part 1 This is going to be a four part series of podcast starting with just Trever and Myself on this first episode, explaining how we find places to hunt and what we hunt. Part 2 will be an interview with a member of Texas Parks and Wildlife, on public hunting, big game draws, & postcard hunts. In Part 3 we will be having On X Maps on to explain how using a online public private mapping can help you be a more productive hunter. Part 4 is the Beyond we are trying to get a guest on to talk about out of state hunting both out west and draws and tags both over the counter and points, because neither of us is experienced in hunting much outside of Texas Texas is more than 95% private land, Lease prices go up every year and are becoming harder to find, but we all own a large amount land in Texas, it is our public land. I didn’t always know about public land hunting and didn’t know it was even an option for hunting. So i will humbly ask this of us all who use public land be it a for hunting, fishing, camping or just enjoying the outdoors, leave it better than you found it, even the simple act of picking of trash in the parking area, just do a little to help ensure we get to enjoy these lands for a long time to come. If you enjoy Hunting and Fishing, consider joining Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, they help us make sure that we will continue to have a place to hunt and fish, on top of the fact they it’s just a bunch of like minded people who are good folks. www.backcountryhunters.org/ All that being said………….. This Podcast series is going to piss some people off, and I understand and get that but the public land we hunt and fish on doesn’t just belong to you and I, it belongs to all of us, and all of us means exactly that all of us. It belongs to every American citizen, and our public land able to be used by anyone who wishes to to use it. So that means the hikers, campers, bird watchers, trail runner, hunters, fishermen, EVERYONE, so we need to be the best stewards of this land, and make sure we take the best care of it as hunters and fishermen, be courteous and polite to the other users of this land we all have the right to use this land but we need to show the non-consumptive users we are the best conservationist’s and use this land as we have the right to, and encourage others to use this land and to leave it better than they found it everytime they use it. I keep notes on location, game seen, harvested, trails, weather (including before and after the hunt).moon phase, who I was with where we parked How we accessed the property, anything that just stood out from the hunt. I also will keep notes on anything I see in just my day to day life about deer movement or bird migration, or even I just happened to notice an uptick on doves sitting on power lines a few weeks before season. Scouting pre and post season The most useful thing for hunting public, grab a fishing pole or camera and get your boots on the ground. Find deer beds, trails, feeding areas.Find where the birds are on the reverse migrations, odds are they will be in the same spot on the trip south. Scouting is a year long activity, if your spring turkey hunting, you should also be looking for sheds or other deer sign, and making notes in your hunting/scouting log as soon as you can to make sure when whatever season it is that sign you found you can remember where it was. Time to Hunt Arrive Early, Extra early for WMA’s that have a drawing to get a unit. Remember when hunting public your hunting against other people as well as the game, you need to think of how they will act, and the affects that could have on the game you are chasing that day. Don’t be married to “your spot” have a backup plan or 3 in the bag and Ready to go, stay light so you can hunt on the more run-n-gun style. Use GPS tracks, avoid flagging tape if at all possible not only is it technically littering, but it also leads everyone else to the spot your found. Hunt during the week if you can to avoid the crowds *the exception to this if you can use the crowds to your advantage. There's more to a successful bird tour than just pointing out the birds, from logistics to managing personalities, a bird tour guide has to be part ornithologist and part psychologist. Rockjumper Birding's George Armistead has led bird tours on all seven continents and has a lot to say on the subject, and he joins host Nate Swick to talk tour tips, places he loves to take birders, and much more. Also, the new Duck Stamp art for 2018 is out, but Nate argues that the subject leaves a little to be desired. Plus a whole host of rare birds on opposite ends of the continent.
