Hey Slaycaters, we're back with another crazy case that you just have to hear to believe.  It takes place in Suwannee, Florida — an interesting part of South Florida — right near the famous Suwannee River (from the famous Old Folks at Home song that also happens to be Florida's State song despite the original version being completely racist)  But we digress…  This case involves the Rainey Family: Dad David Rainey, his wife Cindy and their two 20-something year old sons. Joining them on this Dixieland vacation was one of the son's girlfriends, as well as a family friend and Cindy's Boss from her job as a realtor.  Everything was going fine — until David went missing.  What happens next will have you asking all kinds of questions — many starting with WTF??? But isn't that always the way on Slaycation?  Enjoy and stay safe out there!      SUBSCRIBE to SLAYCATION PLUS(+) For AD FREE listening & "MORE KIM!' Dr. Laura welcomes Bryan Robinson, PhD, a psychotherapist and Professor Emeritus from the University of North Carolina. He is also the best-selling author of over 39 books, including his latest non-fiction, Chained to the Desk in a Hybrid World. Dr. Robinson has researched and written extensively on the subjects of work-life balance, workaholism, and the impact of workaholism on families. Dr. Laura dives deep into Bryan's understanding of work addiction and how to regain perspective and balance in one's life.Dr. Robinson describes his own experience with workaholism and how deeply anxious he'd become if he didn't have work to do. Despite a failing marriage and physical health issues due to workaholism, it wasn't until he had a profound experience with the compassion and clarity exhibited by Tibetan monks that he started his journey toward balance. Bryan explains how counterintuitive it is to stop fighting and learn to float more in life, as in a riptide, but stresses it's finding balance to our fight or flight sympathetic nervous system that holds the key to self-care. Dr. Laura and Dr. Robinson talk about the lessons in his book Chained to the Desk in a Hybrid World, how Gen Z is changing the face of workaholism for the better, what “work jerkery” refers to, and how writing murder mysteries is part of Bryan's own balance in life. “I'm fortunate enough to live on the side of a mountain with an incredible view of the sunsets and just watching the sunset is fulfilling. And it also helps these creative ideas hatch. It's like an incubator. So even though I'm doing nothing, something's happening. And that's what we have to understand. Then what about my shortcomings? I can tell you what those are, but … what are my tallcomings again? People often go blank. But what you're doing is you're bringing balance to your thinking. You know, have a health day to balance out your sick days. Having green time to balance out the screen time.”

Offstage, James Casey was somebody I admired for the way he moved through life: determined, ambitious, graceful, loving. Captain Chuck Ragan From lakes and rivers of Texas, E. Tennessee & N. Georgia., bayous of SW Louisiana or the inshore/offshore salt and freshwater of Florida, Ragan grew up chasing fish. With a Cajun mother and Florida boy father, both avid anglers, he held a rod early on and though the Ragans moved often due to his father's profession as a Veteran PGA pro, teacher and coach, the road always ended in water. Aside from their parents, Chuck and brother Paul fished aside paternal grandparents on the intercoastal of Daytona Bch. and maternal grandparents around Holly Bch. In Louisiana and along the Blanco River outside of Kyle, Tx. Fishing became a way of life in the family. Father Dave Ragan always seemed to relocate the family around prime fisheries whether he meant to or not and having a mama born and bred into it didn't smother the flame one bit. As a teen, he fished bass lakes, beaches, inlets and canals in Sarasota on the Gulf of Florida. With itchy feet in 94, he left for Gainesville, FL. unknowingly continuing what would end up being his music career. As his band Hot Water Music became an international touring machine, Ragan saw the world. Moving to Gainesville followed by Micanopy in early 2000, he learned from Kip Street & Bill “The Gill” Sorton, new methods of angling and woodwork. When not working, you'd find him off the coast of Saint Augustine, Cedar Key or Shellmound chasing Redfish, offshore winching grouper or poling lilies after heavy bass and striper on Rodmans, St. Johns or the Suwannee River. In early 2000, Ragan left the South for California to marry Jill and continued a trade in carpentry, songwriting and fishing Pacific waters. He kept touring, this time with fishing rods in tow. As an angler and traveling musician, Ragan takes advantage of being in prime zones to fish and share music across the globe. Relocating to Grass Valley, CA. in 07, he continued his career in music and began exploring the waters of Northern California through the end of a fly line. Encouraged by peers Matt “Gilligan” Koles, Hogan Brown, Clay Hash and Tom Page, Ragan became a licensed guide and vowes that it was the organization called Cast Hope that was the driving force behind finally taking that step along with having kids in the scope for the future. Ragan began slowing down on touring with his music and began guiding for the non profit organization Cast Hope www.casthope.org to help give a new perspective to kids who've yet to find the passion and reason to protect our naturalresources. Always positive and fired up, he lives to see people light up when their rod bends and believes in giving others the knowledge of the outdoors, fly fishing, teamwork, independent confidence and the importance of respect and conservation for all to carry and pass on themselves. Jill and Chuck had their first child and future deck hand, Grady Joseph in May of 2015 and began slowing down even more in the touring world and focusing mainly on guiding. Now as a USCG licensed Inland OUPV Captain and California fly fishing guide that focuses on Sacramento Valley Rivers, lakes and reservoirs in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range and The California Delta, Ragan loves sharing fun and joy on the water. Always in pursuit of largemouth, smallmouth, striper, spotted bass and shad on the fly as well as the wild trout and steelhead of the Yuba and Feather Rivers, Ragan is just as eager to put people on a fish as he is to catch them himself. This is the first serious challenge to Biden's student loan forgiveness plan, which he announced last month. The lawsuit's plaintiff is Frank Garrison, who's also an attorney at PLF. Garrison borrowed federal student loans to pay for law school, but according to him, Biden's debt forgiveness plan will actually subject him to a financial penalty in the form of a state tax. This gives him standing to sue the U.S. Education Department, his lawsuit argues. According to Garrison, he is already receiving debt relief under Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), a federal program for borrowers who work in public service at nonprofit organizations. Qualifying borrowers who make a certain number of payments and meet maximum income requirements can have the rest of their debts forgiven by PSLF. Garrison expects to qualify in about four years. Importantly, debt relief under PSLF is not subject to state taxes. Biden's broad forgiveness plan, however, will be taxed as income in Indiana—where Garrison resides—as well as Wisconsin, North Carolina, Minnesota, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Garrison will be "stuck with a tax bill that makes him financially worse off than continuing with his repayment program under PSLF," according to the lawsuit. "He did not ask for cancellation, doesn't want it, and has no way to opt out of it." While the Pacific Legal Foundation's theory is that this gives Garrison standing to sue the Education Department, the lawsuit's case against the Biden forgiveness plan is more straightforward: PLF is arguing that Biden has violated both the Constitution and the Administrative Procedure Act, which give Congress rather than the president the power to make new regulations. Biden's new plan will forgive up to $20,000 worth of debt for many borrowers. The plan could cost U.S. taxpayers anywhere between $300 billion and a trillion dollars. A low estimate of the cost per individual taxpayer is $2,100. The administration has claimed that it has the power to unilaterally forgive student loan debts without consulting Congress. As justification, Biden has cited 2003's Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students, or HEROES Act. This law gave the president some authority to cancel or delay student loan repayments during national emergencies, with the clear intention of offering relief to borrowers who were serving in combat operations during the war on terror. Biden's view is that the COVID-19 pandemic counts as a national emergency, even though he has now declared it definitively "over." PLF's lawsuit takes issue with the pandemic justification for debt relief, noting that the harms purportedly ameliorated with debt forgiveness are not a "direct result" of the "national emergency," as required by the HEROES Act. Loan forgiveness is set to kick in sometime next month. https://www.theepochtimes.com/officials-issue-mandatory-evacuation-orders-ahead-of-hurricane-ian_4757626.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport Officials Issue ‘Mandatory’ Evacuation Orders Ahead of Hurricane Ian Hurricane Ian is now a major Category 3 hurricane as it lashes the western portion of Cuba, although the storm is still forecast to strengthen further before hitting western Florida as officials have implemented mandatory evacuation orders. “This is a much different storm. [Hurricane] Charley was a lot smaller, it was powerful, it was a Category 4. Most of the damage from Charley was from wind and wind destruction,” DeSantis said on Tuesday morning, referring to a 2004 Category 4 storm that hit western Florida’s coast. Hurricane Ian’s sustained winds intensified to about 125 mph on Tuesday morning as it made landfall in western Cuba, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). It’s expected to hit near the Tampa area around 2 a.m. on Thursday morning, NHC modeling shows. When it makes landfall, Ian will be at least a Category 3 with 111 mph winds at the minimum, according to the model. The governor and other Florida officials warned that people around Tampa should heed evacuation orders due to the significant flooding that Ian is expected to bring. Storm surge of between 5 to 10 feet is anticipated for Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor, said the NHC in its update Tuesday. Five to 8 feet of storm surge is also expected between the Suwannee River to Anclote (An-cloat) River areas. “We expect to have to evacuate 300,000 people, and that will take some time,” Hillsborough County Administrator Bonnie Wise told reporters. “That’s why we are starting today.” https://thepostmillennial.com/shannon-brandt-man-who-ran-down-teen-for-being-a-republican-free-with-no-house-arrest-and-low-bond?utm_campaign=64487 North Dakota man who killed teen claiming he was 'Republican extremist' out on low bond, no house arrest Shannon Brandt, the suspect who ran down 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson for being a Republican with his SUV in McHenry, North Dakota last week, is out free with no curfew and no house arrest. According to Fox News, 41-year-old Brandt, who has been charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a deadly accident, was released after posting a $50,000 bond, something former assistant US attorney Neama Rahman called "very low" and "woefully inadequate." A suspect can be released by posting bail, which is typically 10 percent of the required bond, meaning Brandt would be free after only providing $5,000. The incident occurred on September 18 when the two had a political dispute after a street dance that was held at a local bar. Brandt admitted that his actions were politically motivated because the teen was part of a "Republican extremist group." There is "no evidence" Ellingson was part of any such group according to North Dakota Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind. As part of his release, Brandt cannot leave North Dakota, cannot consume alcohol, must be in a sobriety program, cannot possess a firearm, and must not be within 300 feet of the Ellingson family. President Joe Biden posted a video to his official Twitter telling Democrats to "fight back against extreme MAGA Republicans" days after Brandt's actions. https://thepoliticalinsider.com/after-u-s-soldiers-were-told-to-go-on-food-stamps-congress-finds-another-12-billion-for-ukraine/ After U.S. Soldiers Were Told to Go On Food Stamps, Congress Finds Another $12 Billion for Ukraine Congressional lawmakers agreed to a deal that would provide another $12 billion in aid to Ukraine, which would bring the total military and economic resources provided to over $66 billion. The news follows the Senate passing a $40 billion aid package in May, along with a $14 billion package in March. President Biden earlier this month asked Congress for an additional $11.7 billion in aid for Ukraine, with Congress, in turn, seems to be jumping at his behest. As a reminder, also earlier this month the Army told active-duty American soldiers to go on food stamps if they were unable to afford food thanks to inflation. Food stamps for American soldiers, endless billions for Ukraine. This is your country now. Reuters reports that the funding agreement for Ukraine would address a variety of financial needs for Ukraine, including the hope that it would “reduce future energy costs.” Meanwhile, the White House which had been touting lower gas prices despite them being well over the national average when Biden took office, has suddenly gone quiet. Why? Because they’re going back up again. FLF Magazine: We are on a mission to make magazines great again. So, subscribe to our Fight Laugh Feast magazine. Coach Rolovich sat down with sports reporter Allison Williams, host of the new Daily Wire exclusive series Breakaways, and spoke regarding his thoughts on the impacts of the controversial vaccine as well as how his stance as a traditional Catholic ultimately led to confrontations with other staff after he chose not to comply with the mandate. Rolovich and four other assistant coaches were fired from Washington State in 2021 for their non-compliance with the state vaccine mandate. Because of this, Rolovich was unable to collect the estimated $9 million remaining on his contract with the school. Feeling his rights had been violated, he embarked on a $25 million wrongful termination suit against his former employers. https://twitter.com/i/status/1574072486223699972 - Play Video “The priest broke it down to me,” said Rolovich. “Because he wanted to know why, and I said, ‘This is just how I’m feeling,’ and he says, ‘Well, that’s your conscience talking to you and the Catholic Church recognizes your conscience.’ That was what was speaking to me the whole time.” However, Rolovich made it clear that his biggest regret regarding the whole situation was not making it public earlier while still an employee at Washington State that he was not going to take the shot on the grounds of religious reasons. One tense moment came with Pat Chun, the Washington State athletic director, who laid down the potential pathways things would go down if Rolovich decided to still not comply. “[Chun] said, ‘You got four options: resign, get the vax, get a medical exemption, get religious exemption,” said Rolovich. “I’m not getting the shot. I’m not resigning. I’m not going to get a medical because I could go get a fan card, easy, but then I’d be lying… I’m going to do a religious [exemption]. And they both said ‘We’re not going to believe you, you know, the governor’s not happy with you.'” Rolovich did choose the religious exemption route, which was even approved by the school’s Human Resources department, but Chun intervened and wrote a letter putting Rolovich’s reasoning into question, going as far as to call him a science denier. Because of Chun, Rolovich’s exemption was shot down. Rolovich was not the only employee who was intentionally targeted for questioning the vaccine. David Fox, who was the school’s director of football operations, had asked the school’s professor of pathology and infectious diseases during a presentation made to the athletic department in a presentation regarding the vaccine, whether it had any long-term impact on women and their ability to become pregnant. This question upset Chun, who later decided he would not renew Fox’s contract with the school. Rolovich was upset with Chun’s decision regarding Fox, saying “I already said to renew him, I was happy with the job he did.” A verbal argument spun out when Rolovich confronted Chun, and from there everything got worse. For now, Rolovich doesn’t know whether he’ll ever be able to obtain another position coaching again, but if that’s the case, he’s at peace with it. “Sitting here seven months later, to me, God was right, trusting that feeling and that belief really did end up helping me out.” Last thing I’ll say in this newsbrief, is this… Pat Chun? AD of WSU, you need to resign. You are a coward, who needs to be away from a leadership position over young men, and has no business being in the position that you are. Your handling over this situation is revolting, and you need to be on your knees, repenting to the Lord. Will Pat ever hear this? Probably not… but worth mentioning. A suspect can be released by posting bail, which is typically 10 percent of the required bond, meaning Brandt would be free after only providing $5,000. Warriors from Bondage by Jackson Walker portraying the attack on the Fort at Prospect Bluff, or as the Americans called it, the Negro Fort. In previous episodes, we have examined the history and activities surrounding the Fort at Prospect Bluff and then its destruction and its grim aftermath. In this episode, published on the anniversary of the fort's destruction, July 27, Historian Dale Cox returns to give us the rest of the story on many of the key figures involved. While the Americans executed the fort's leaders, how did Abraham fare? What became of the survivors? Who was the Forbes agent who treated the maroons whom the Americans had deemed too injured to treat. Who was the Coweta leader who captured some 100 maroons outside the fort? What was the brutal fate that awaited the British officer who removed any remaining maroons in the fort's vicinity to a Black Seminole town further inside Florida?  What does a long overlooked letter from Lt. Col. Duncan Clinch tell us about American intentions for the self-liberated blacks within Spanish Florida's borders? And who was Mary Ashley, a black maroon who hoisted the British flag each morning, helping with firing artillery, and who was buried in dirt by the explosion? She lived a harrowing life afterwards but was redeemed some years later by the British officer responsible for overseeing the fort's operations. Dale Cox discusses all this and more.   A British flag flies over the former grounds of the British (or Negro) fort at Prospect Bluff. A marker on site details the devastation. Below, the British evacuated blast survivors to Nero's Fort on Suwannee River.    American officers submitted an inventory of the stores captured from what they dubbed the Negro Fort. Secretary of War John C. Calhoun submitted a report to the Congress on the battle at Negro Fort.  Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a combat veteran and of the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Kosovo, and at the Pentagon after 9/11. In a previous podcast, Historian Dale Cox set the stage for the American attack on the Fort at Prospect Bluff. In this episode, Dale recalls the actual determined American campaign and the fort's stubborn resistance between July 10 and July 27, 1816. This was not rag-tag defense by desperate self-liberated former slaves. These were well-trained British colonial marines who were black. Some indeed were former slaves, but all considered themselves free men and women. The fort's defense was an all-hands operation with the wives and children filling bags with gun powder that the marines used to fire artillery rounds that kept the Americans at bay on the Apalachicola River in Spanish Florida. The marines successfully warded off continued American naval barrages until the Americans' very last shot, when everything changed in a flash. Reenactors portray British Colonial Marines of the 1816 era.   When open, visitors can walk the grounds of the fort. The National Park Service teamed with the US Forest Service to conduct a non-invasive above-ground survey of the fort's former confines. (Below) Pompey Fixico, a Seminole Maroon descendant from Los Angeles, spoke at the 200th Commemoration of the Battle of the Fort at Prospect Bluff, in 2016.  Amidst the rubble, the Americans landed unopposed at the fort at Prospect Bluff. Authorities interviewed and executed some. And, regardless of previous manumission, the Americans condemned free, self-liberated maroons back into slavery, whether that was in the United States or in Spanish Florida. A few months later, in the late fall of 1816, the British finally returned, only to find the fort destroyed and its occupants dead or re-enslaved. Then-Captain Woodbine picked up stragglers who had fled into the woods after the explosion. He resettled them at Nero's Town on the Suwannee River, still, in Spanish Florida.   The Secretary of War forwarded to Congress a report on the Destruction of the Negro Fort, wholly "justifying" US action in the Spanish Florida territory, based on military reports.  Dale Cox examines the fighting, the explosion, and the grim aftermath for the fort's defenders. In Episode 92, the Camel joins me in the studio to discuss the Suwannee River section of the Florida Trail which we hiked this winter. If you are not familiar with the Suwannee, it is a 246 mile river that begins in the Okefenokee Swamp in South Georgia and ends at the Gulf of Mexico in the northern panhandle of Florida. On our trip, we backpacked ~34 miles moving downstream and east to west on the Suwannee - from the town of White Springs to Gibson County Park. This section of the Florida Trail is frequently mentioned as a favorite among backpackers, and during the winter months is one of the drier areas on the Florida Trail. In the show, we discuss the dark tannin waters and white sand beaches of the river. We review some native American history in the area, and talk about the springs and sink holes along the Florida Trail. This section is surprisingly challenging - despite the biggest climb being only 80 feet at Devil's Mountain. Find out why and much more in Episode 92! In a much simpler time, years before one of Florida's first invasive species the Giganticus Mousimus commonly referred to as Mickey, lived a wild and vast prairies riddled with palm trees, oak hammocks and swamps full of alligators. From the 1500s until 1844 whole east coast of Central Florida was known as "Los Musquitos".   After Andrew Jackson received authority to take possession of the Florida territory ceded by Spain in 1821, he divided the whole territory into two counties, along the Suwannee RIver.  All of the area west formed Escambia, and all of it east formed St. Johns County  .This was largely consistent with the previously existing British colonies of West Florida and East Florida.   Mosquito County was split off from St. Johns on December 29, 1824. At roughly 220 miles long by 90 miles wide, it was the largest county in the new territory. In 1842, the Armed Occupations Act was passed, providing 160 acres to any head of family who settled on property south of Ocala.  In 1844, the expansive area of Mosquito County was cut in half with the southern half being named St. Lucia County, and the northern half being renamed Orange County. St. Lucia County was renamed Brevard County in 1855. A shoutout to Ron and Sharri Chafin who were the first to meet us. They brought a very nice birthday gift for Jennifer! We are camping on the Suwanee River, which is the only major waterway in the southeastern United States that is still unspoiled. The Suwanee flows from the Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. It winds for almost 266 miles through swamps, high limestone banks, hammocks of hardwood, and salt marshes. It also has fifty-five springs along the way. But besides that, it's particularly famous because of Stephen Foster. He became America's first professional songwriter in the 1800s. He wrote more than 200 songs with tunes and lyrics that captured the heart and spirit of the nation. While writing “Old Folks at Home,” Foster had difficulty finding the right words to complete a verse joining his image of a beautiful river and longings for family and home. According to legend, his brother suggested the Suwannee River after consulting a world atlas. The words fit, and “Way down upon the Suwannee River” was on its way to making the Suwannee River famous around the world. Foster never visited Florida and he never saw the Suwannee River. Nevertheless, since 1935, it has also been Florida's state song. In the 1950s, land was acquired on the Suwannee River at White Springs. The land was developed into the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. Shortly thereafter, the Florida Folk Festival was established to highlight the state's cultural history and traditions.
