Whine & Wine, hosted by Jyl Barlow and Kathy Crowley is the perfect spot to unwind with two new friends. Well, WE aren't new friends. We're old friends. Well, not old in the aging sense - we're only ... well, age isn't really that important, is it? Whine & Wine is the perfect spot to unwind with two of your new best friends. Whine & Wine is a podcast about sharing nothing which, as we women know, means sharing everything all at once. Whine & Wine is not about solving problems. It's about somehow making them worse while laughing very inappropriately in the process.

Can you say riveting?? Jyl & Kathy are back after a quick break because...life.This month, we explore our feral childhoods and why today's generations could benefit from a more free-range approach while being raised. Signs of a Feral Childhood? Well, for one, you were probably born in the 70's.We left the house after breakfast and didn't return home until someone's mom rang a bell (or the streetlights went on).We rode our bikes to the corner store, but we didn't always clarify which corner. We walked a mile to the local pool with a dollar in change for lunch from the vending machine, which was located further down the street. We had no need for bus notes. We just got on a different bus if we decided to go somewhere else after school. Later, we'd ring our mothers to let them know where we were. Our main source of hydration was the water hose. Our parents had no way to contact us once we were out of their sight. We typically had to be out of their sight within ten minutes of finishing breakfast.Televisions broadcast a message at 10:00 pm asking, “Do you know where your kids are?” Latchkey kids wasn't a term; it was just how we lived. We were free-range children, and we are better because of it. Why? We can solve any problem at any time. We rarely have to ask for seventeen different opinions in order to make a decision. We left the nest with confidence and zero thoughts of returning. We had more life skills before grade school than today's baby adults have coming out of collegeWe can get blood out of anything.  Our Nonsor this week was Carpool Karaoke. The Law of Kindness

In this month's episode, we talk about bullying and, while doing so, we mention suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to a friend, family member, or dial/text 988 for help. You are not alone and I mean that. This is something that I have struggled with in the past. Feel free to reach out. - Jyl *** This month, Kathy and Jyl discuss bullying as we unravel our truth. Our truth? Our truth is that today's bullying is not the same that we grew up with. Today, it is much more cutting and dangerous. Bullying is defined as seeking to hard, intimidate, or coerce and there are far too many avenues for it to live on in 2024. Types of bullying are physical, verbal, relational, and cyberbullying. While physical bullying is the easiest to spot, the others are often much more harmful. Bullying is typically repeated over and over as many feel unsure of how to stop it. We encourage you to be part of the change. You can make a difference. You can be a part of the solution. You can help change the narrative. Some numbers: 1 in 5 students under the age of 18 experience bullying 160,000 children miss school daily due to the fear of bullying How you can help: Pay attention to the signs. Notice the moment when you feel that something is off. See something, say something. Step in kindly and softly to remove the victim from the situation. If you feel comfortable doing so, de-escalate the bully. Follow up with them as there is a high possibility their actions are born from personal struggle.  What if you're the bully? Acknowledge that you have tendencies that make others feel vulnerable or intimidated. Ask yourself why. Look inward. What does bullying bring to you? Get help. There are so many resources available to help you work through your own challenges and find a better path. Don't feel afraid to apologize and present a better version of yourself. Nonsor: Kind Lips Joshua Neumann first dreamed up Kind Lips lip balm but found his mother was not quite as enthusiastic about entering the lip balm business. This month on Whine & Wine, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ashley Maria and Lea-Ann Berst. This dynamic, daughter-mother duo is behind the short film, Super Human Anxiety, which will premiere on July 28, 2024, at LA Shorts, the longest-running film festival in Los Angeles. LA Shorts is a qualifying event for the Academy Awards, BAFTA, the Canadian Screen Awards, and the Goya Awards.  In other words…LA Shorts is kind of a big deal. Super Human Anxiety's focus is on Whitney–a teenager navigating strong emotions and how a teacher is able to teach Whitney how to redirect those strong emotions into superpowers. Anxiety is rising among teens and this impact film will serve as a much-needed tool for those affected, whether personally or as someone who simply wants to help.  Super Human Anxiety comes on the heels of Ashley Maria's documentary Pioneers in Skirts which dives into the roadblocks many girls and women encounter when chasing their aspirations. For Ashley Maria, both films are very personal and true to her experiences as an award-winning female in the film industry.  To reach as many people as possible, Super Human Anxiety will be offered at no cost to those who work closely with teens navigating mental health challenges. This episode was so interesting to record (so much so that my note-taking was weak). The bonus? We'll have a continuation of our conversation in our next episode when we do a deep dive into Pioneers in Skirts. ** Interested in following Ashley Maria's work? Good, you should be. It was so enlightening that we invited that Gen Z pal back to turn the tables on us. We absolutely should have expected Sydney to show ready to...well, okay, not really ready...but to show ready to wing it. Very on-brand for Gen Z. It was another great episode in which we proved how important it is for women to keep those cross-generational lines of communication open. Listen along as we discuss: Whether anything really changes from generation to generation. How the characters are the same in every friend circle, no matter the age group. For those not familiar, Rich is the luckiest man in the world, Jyl's husband, and also the topic of many stories in Jyl's best-selling memoir "What to Expect When You Weren't Expecting (Parenting Tales from the Most Unqualified (Step)Mom Ever". It is fairly common within the step-circuit to hear from the stepparents...but how often do we hear from the biological parent? Rich's advice is top-notch and a MUST LISTEN for the bio-half of all blended families. If we could sum up that advice in a few words? Well, Rich found the perfect way with this Pulp Fiction quote: Pride fucks with you. Fuck Pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps. New Year's Resolutions: We're Doing It Wrong

New Year's Resolutions: We're Doing It Wrong This month, Kathy and Jyl take a deep dive into their New Year's Resolutions. Just kidding, no diving necessary as we learned something about each other: Neither of us approaches the New Year with an unachievable punch list that will put us under unnecessary pressure. You shouldn't either. Why? Check out this research from the Google: Research suggests that only 9% of Americans who make resolutions complete them.  Research shows that 23% of people quit their resolution by the end of the first week, 43% quit by the end of January, and all but that dwindling 9% quit. Why? Many resolutions are created based on tradition rather than need. "Need" is much more motivating and that need may not come until a random date in the future like July 23rd. Wait until then. Obstacles. For many, obstacles are a dream killer when it comes to resolutions. A missed day at the gym due to snow, a sale on Ben & Jerry's and suddenly, wait, what was your resolution? Size matters. Many create resolutions that are simply too big. Life updates should be done in small chunks so that one might feel several hints of success over a longer period rather than continue eyeing some unlikely win. Accountability. Who needs it? Resolutions are for those still full of hope and energy and the ability to stick to something. Not that we're not, but, well... Thoughts from Jyl: I realized that New Year's resolutions were yet another way I could spend months beating myself up for not reaching success. My current approach is tiered with a few goals that are slam dunks, a couple that are challenging, and one stretch goal, such as writing a book (or in this 2024's case, publishing an audiobook). Thoughts from Kathy: I put a twist on the traditional resolution this year by digging into things I want to rid myself of in 2024. This was a group activity with friends and, after we wrote down the items/people/etc that we would be happier without, we burned those lists as we said goodbye to those things that were going to drag us down. What we agreed on the most? Forgiveness. Yes, even (or especially) when it comes to resolutions. Forgive and Forget, you are under no pressure to perform. If you've made a resolution and it isn't working out, set it aside for a month and see if it's still important. No? Then leave it behind. You didn't need that resolution anyway. All that being said? Of course, we did give ourselves a couple of dreams for 2024. Jyl: Publish Audiobook (stretch goal!) | Lose the riff-raff | Wear the jewelry | Clean the pantry | Career Casual Kathy: Start doing voiceovers | Focus on health but not in an obsessive way | Organize the freezer | Leave work at work This episode was not sponsored by Any Adventure or Pixie & Pan Vacations so absolutely check them out! As humans, we have more in common than we think we do. Or, do we?   This month, our gift to you. We found a Gen Z'er willing to spend an hour with us answering all those mind-blogging questions that we've always wanted to ask. Or at least a few. Honestly, we were having so much fun that we might have gone on for hours if it weren't for my pesky date night. What did we get into? Kathy finally put her foot down and gave a full explanation of which years cover which generations in an attempt to stop Jyl from misgenning all the time. The right way to say and drink Boba (turns out, we shouldn't be doing either). How the pandemic affected the Gen Z'ers vs how the Gen X'ers think it should have. What are Gen Z'ers passionate about? How did they make tattoos acceptable? Which socials are in and which are out? Why and how Gen Z'ers navigate so many communication portals. How the Gen Z talent of acceptance also causes some difficulties in handling conflict. My favorite? A day to rot. I took one yesterday so now I'm scrambling to get this episode posted. Gratitude: 5 Things

This month, we take a deep dive into things we are grateful for. No, not the standard, canned response (“my family”) but even further down the path.  Want to find out what the people around you are truly grateful for? Ask for five bullet points and you will get past the “I have to say this” answer to learn what really moves them. This episode was not sponsored by Marcus Uraan, the inventor of Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce. We went back and forth on our list of five items (we chose from either people or experiences) and learned some wonderful things about each other. Hopefully, you will as well. In no particular order: Family: Okay, yes, still number one but also inclusive of those friends who become family and those wonky family members who may teach you by example (good or bad). We both listed this one first in case our family members only listen to the first five minutes. Sports: We both chose sports, though for very different reasons. For Kathy, sports reeled her in and, she believes, likely kept her out of a lot of trouble. For Jyl, sports was all she knew about herself until a shoulder injury sent her in a different, even better direction.  The Pandemic: Really? No, really. A relationship saver in Jyl's home. Education: But not just the book kind. For Kathy, education means constantly creating opportunities for herself to evolve as a person. Scouting: Kathy's time in Girl Scouts shaped endless relationships including the one with her father. It was through her time as a scout that she quickly recognized the importance of female friendships. Glimpses of God: For Jyl, this book by Michelle Peele was life-changing. Peele bravely shares the story of losing her teenage daughter and the moments prior that ended up mattering so much more than she ever would have imagined.  Travel: Getting outside your bubble may be the most important thing we can do for ourselves. A big plus? Finding out you are not (gasp!) the center of the universe. The Person You Are Kind to Next: Whoa. Jyl may have gone a little deep on this one but, for her, it matters. In sports, we learn that you are only as good as your next swing or hit or landing. In life? You are how you act towards others and being kind is a huge character plus. This month, we dive into Adult Hobbies (not that kind)! As many baby adults turn to young adults turn to seasoned adults, participation in extracurriculars drops as focus becomes, well, focused on work or maintaining a home or just about anything that is not optional. Hello? This is a call to action. Get back out there and do something for you that is not at the demand of your employer or school district or roommate. Hobbies are incredibly important for our mental health, yet they are often the first thing dropped when we feel stretched too thin. Why, many of us don't even remember what we like to do in our free time. Don't worry, we have endless suggestions that range from diamond art to Duolingo to naming the birds that frequent your feeder. Okay, maybe not all of them are good suggestions, but still. Have you heard of the 5-Hobby Rule? According to some, we should have hobbies that meet each of these categories: One to make you money One to keep you in shape One to be creative One to build knowledge One to evolve your mindset While we agree that the creators of this guideline have more free time than us, it does make some sense. Today's Episode was not sponsored by Nippies! Nippies are the perfect way to keep your personal thermometers at bay. Other mentions? Last month, we talked about The Meandering Career Path and how having a single job at the same company for the entirety of one's life is incredibly rare. Today, we extend that zig-zag of a challenge into our homes, literally, as we chat about what it's like to move one's entire HOME to a new location. Yes, a fresh start sounds wonderful but, by GAWD, it is terrifying. We have both been on the UHaul end of one of those “start over somewhere else” decisions and thought it would be fun to share the things we learned along those dark, confusing and lonely treks. Key thoughts? Have a plan prior to packing. Are there clubs or organizations you can join? Get yourself on their radar before you say “So long!” to your old life. If you are opting for temporary housing until you can get on your feet–set a finish line. Know when you want to be on your feet and where those feet will be standing and stick to the goal. As you settle in, take the road less traveled and do it without the benefit of your GPS. Really. The quickest way to feel comfortable in your new skin is to get lost - especially if it means asking a stranger for help. You will find most people are quite helpful and welcoming to the new kid in town. Leave your house/apt/condo/tent. Leave it a lot. We have so many avoidance techniques at our fingertips but put them all away and get out in public. It may seem much more appealing to spend days on the couch catching up on Gilmore Girls but now is now the time to wallow under a blanket. Embrace the Suck. This is true in many aspects of life, but especially in starting anew. It will suck. You will cry. You will feel lonely. You will feel like you will never be happy again. Embrace it all as, eventually, those feelings will be a thing of the past.  You are not alone. Ask. Really. Find yourself standing in a checkout line? Half of those in line with you were new to the area at some point. Be brave and ask. You will also hear how the added benefit of "Paid Vacation" turned those cartwheels into actual flips. It's a big deal - that first time when someone is willing to PAY you to be away. Of course, we couldn't afford more than a trip to our parent's home, but still, PAID? It was a glorious time and also a time when companies stopped just short of demanding their employees take a dang break once a year. Today? It's gotten quite blurry. Why? The multiple names changes? What was once vacation became Paid Time Off which became Personal Time Off which became Unlimited Time Off. Or is this the need for an endless list of colleagues to cover for your absence that, in reality, won't matter very much? Another challenge? Not judging those who do use their vacation. You know what? Stop worrying about them and get something on your schedule. Taking time off from most anything is important at some period, but work especially.
