Imagine working in the largest, most prestigious record store in Manhattan in the 1980's. Now imagine doing that twice. Today's guest, Billy DePasquale started his record retail career at the largest record store in Manhattan, Sam Goody in Rockefeller Center, in September of 1980. Tower Records wouldn't land in Manhattan for another 3 years. One event that stands out during his time at Sam Goody is the day after John Lennon was murdered and the lines to get into the store to buy John Lennon and Beatles records.Billy worked at a small local chain called The Record Factory on 8th Street in the Village. A co-worker told him about an upcoming store about to open. When the co-worker got a job at the brand new Tower Records at 4th & Broadway, she spoke for him. Billy interviewed and got the job. From there he spent years at both the Village store and later at Lincoln Center.Eventually Billy was hired by WEA Distribution in New York where he started working as an inventory person and then worked up to Sales Director for the Northeast Region. After Tower closed in 2006, Billy left WEA in May of 2007.Throughout our interview Billy talks about the camaraderie among the staff of #125 including very late nights at The Cactus Cafe with Keith Richards and Patti Hansen tucked into a table aside from the partying Tower revelers, the working relationships he forged in those early years, the differences between Tower Records and other music accounts and a whole lot more.
The Cactus Cafe has remained an important cultural crossroad for countless Americana, folk, and country acts. So when a thread is formed between two longtime Cactus veterans (with recognition in their own right) who go on to collaborate outside of Austin’s best listening room, expectations are high. Take for instance two of the most decorated […]
Growing up outside of Boston, multi-instrumentalist David Hamburger first picked up a guitar at the age of 12. Through his first guitar teacher he was exposed to bluegrass music, and at home his father was turning him on to Tin Pan Alley pop. Through his teens, Hamburger was also becoming more interested in blues and jazz, incorporating the various styles into his playing. His interest in blues was further stoked while attending Wesleyan University when a friend taught him to play slide. A stint at Manhattan's School of Music where he was studying jazz composition didn't last, as Hamburger left the graduate program to play with a then-unknown Freedy Johnston. Hamburger was also playing with an R&B band as well as performing solo, finally gathering some of his favorite local musicians to help him record King of the Brooklyn Delta in 1995. Extensive touring helped him to build a live following around New York and New England, while he continued to contribute guitar, dobro, and pedal steel to the recordings of others. Indigo Rose, recorded in a little more than a week, arrived in 1999.As a solo artist, David has appeared at Merlefest, the Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Old Settlers Music Festival, and venues including Passim, Cafe Lena and the Cactus Cafe. He has opened for Dave Van Ronk, Jorma Kaukonen, Rory Block and Roy Book Binder and jammed onstage with Duke Robillard, Gatemouth Brown and Tinsley Ellis. As a sideman and session musician, David has recorded with Freedy Johnston, toured the U.S. with Joan Baez, and appeared with Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen on Springsteen's remake of “The Ghost of Tom Joad.”David is also the author of two dozen instructional books and videos, including the award-winning Beginning Blues Guitar, which has sold over 100,000 copies and been released in a second edition after 20 continuous years in print. We talk all things acoustic blues, he even whips out a stunning sounding Martin and demos a bit for us so, not one to miss! Ali tells us that she had to go outside of the hospitality industry to gain those mission-critical leadership skills that she knew she needed to be truly successful. "Coaches Lead, Leaders Coach' Jim's training path with Cactus Cafe "Feed - Foreward" and being willing to receive feedback. Alison's Step Zero is "Letting go of the habit of attitude to become a better leader." Getting over the fear of being fired to step into inner leadership. Just Notice. " I try to enter into each relationship with the mindset of the person I want to be in 3, 5 10 years. How would they react to this situation." "No time to train? Way too busy? I get it, BUT The reality is that nothing will change until we change it." Our cultures are directly affected by how we use our time. All it takes is 5 minutes a day and a willingness to interrupt the story that you've been telling yourself.
Hello friends! One of my favorite people and singer-songwriters, Jeremy Nail is my guest for episode 1197! His new album, the dreamy Behind The Headlights comes out this Friday, August 26th and he's celebrating with an instore at Waterloo Records on Fri. 8/26 and a release show at The Cactus Cafe on Saturday, 8/27. Peep his gorgeous new video directed by Todd V. Wolfson for "Something More" HERE. Go to jeremynail.com for show dates, music, videos and more. Jeremy and I have a great conversation about making Behind The Headlights at The Zone with Pat Manske, Bukka Allen, Greg White and more, how growing up in the expanse of West Texas informed the album's dreamy expansive sound, getting through 2020 and beyond mentally and emotionally, the coolness of drum machines and much more. I had a great time catching up with Jeremy. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! If you feel so inclined. Venmo: www.venmo.com/John-Goudie-1 Paypal: paypal.me/johnnygoudie
Four men are facing federal charges in connection to the mounting count of 53 migrants who died of heat exhaustion after being abandoned in a tractor trailer near San Antonio this week - including the driver of the truck, who tried to pass himself off as a migrant himself when confronted by police. The first Texas city on record saying it will not enforce new abortion restrictions in Texas isn't Austin - it's Denton. Following the closure of Jacob's Well this week comes the closing of Hamilton Pool, also due to high bacteria levels in the water. Meanwhile, after months of pleading for new lifeguards, some of them have not been getting paid on time by Austin's Parks and Recreation Department. Austin's Music Commission is requesting that the City Council expedite the deployment of the Live Music Fund to an earlier date than the one currently planned, next July. Stream Realty Partners, the company heavily invested in revitalizing East 6th Street has unveiled plans for new live music venues in several spaces it controls, including the former Buffalo Billiards and Dirty Dog spaces. SXSW is planning an offshoot event in Sydney, Australia, in October of 2023 (it's spring down there at that time). Travis and Williamson counties both made U.S. News' new rundown of the 500 healthiest counties in the country - Collin County ranked highest in Texas at #50, and Williamson significantly outranked Travis, at #121 and #295, respectively. Thursday live music roundup for the weekend: Friday shows include album releases with Sir Woman album release at The Parish and Big Bill at Hotel Vegas, a TC Superstar tour kickoff show at Cheer Up Charlie's, Bigg Robb at Antone's as part of their 47th Anniversary run, and a Nancy Griffith tribute show at the Cactus Cafe. Saturday catch Antone's anniversary fun with Jimmie Vaughan, a heavy 2nd Anniversary party at Hold Out Brewing with Holy Death Trio and Eagle Claw, and Los Pendejos del Norte featuring Ed Miller of Sun Radio and Rich Brotherton of the Robert Earl Keen band at New World Deli. Sunday Fleet Foxes are at Waterloo Park's Moody Amphitheater, and the Antone's anniversary features Miss Lavelle's Birthday Bash. And Monday the 4th, Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic rolls into Q2 Stadium for the first time with Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Tyler Childers, Allison Russell, Steve Earle & the Dukes, and tons more. Austin weather: a tropical disturbance in the northwestern Gulf Of Mexico is expected to dump rain on the Texas coast, and there's hope some of that will come our way, but officially our rain chances for this week are dropping and our hopes for significantly cooler temps are fading too. Highs Thursday and Friday of 96, rain chance now down to 20% for Friday. We're back to upper 90's by Saturday, and then back to what looks like a long string of triple digit days starting Tuesday.
Busy and controversial times at the Texas Legislature as bills allowing permitless carrying of handguns, limiting abortion access and banning public camping statewide make progress towards law. A bill that would have handicapped Austin's ability to regulate loud, late-night sound from live music venues effectively dies in the House. Two 17-year-old accused murderers are loose in Austin after having been kept in custody for less than two weeks. A former car dealership sales manager is accused of trafficking firearms from the business. Student tour guides at UT go on strike over "The Eyes Of Texas". Round Rock Express baseball returns to the Dell Diamond tonight after over 600 days away. Again, Austin is the fastest-growing metro in the country (and has been for a decade now). Live music: Continental Club, C-Boy's and the Mohawk announce live music returning to their stages, the future of the Cactus Cafe remains under discussion, and the Statesman runs down the pandemic comeback of several beloved local festivals, including the ACL Fest.

The Dark Ages – Volume 07: This is getting to be too much. There is an overwhelming artificial-citrus stink to this whole episode. There's a battle at one point but it happens on a molecular level so there's, honestly, not much to see or hear. The testosterone levels in this episode are essentially undetectable. It's a bit of a slog, much like the slog one might discover settled in the bottom of a deep-fat fryer after a particularly busy mid-December Fish Friday at The Cactus Cafe in Yuma, Arizona. #ComedyIsDead #SharkTankAndTheBiscuit #SpokaneComedy #SpokaneSucks #Podcast #Comedy #ComedyWar #Funny #Hilarious #Derek #Schoonover #SharkTank #Biscuit #Humor #KanyeWest #Spokane #StandUp #STATB #Merchus #ToweringPylonsOfIndisputablePowerAndTalent #Humble Get it! So stop listening now. I have released over 20 studio albums since 2004. I thought it would be nice to make playlists of my music, when I realized, I have been publishing this podcast since 2005. This is the perfect place to create a Marc Gunn playlist. So over the next two hours, you will enjoy lots of my music, intermixed with a small sampling of my favorite bands from the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I say small, because there's a lot of great music, and I also am aiming for a drinking songs feel to this show. Because that's kinda what I do. Sci Fi and Irish drinking songs, merged together in harmony. But don't worry. There's a bunch of trad tunes in the mix as well... I apologize for the delay, but the holidays and family commitments took precedence. If it's any consolation, I'm two months behind on releasing my album Dragons vs. Pirates, which I successfully funded on Kickstarter earlier this year. But weekly gigs in November, sick children and the holidays, I'm doing the best I can. * The 2015 Celtic Christmas Podcast show was a hit. And many of you got the show directly in the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast feed due to a small technical error on my part. But it turned out for the best. Because of that error, we climbed up to #7 on the iTunes Music Podcast charts. I hope you enjoy the show. * I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK: Email a written comment.
