We are back with a pair of the show's favorites! Ashley Maria and Lea-Ann first visited with us in July when we got to know them and learned so much about the impact films this dynamic duo is behind. In July, we focused on their short film, Super Human Anxiety. This month, we dive deep into Pioneers in Skirts, a feature-length film that explores the struggle of being female in film, science, and more. Wait, is that still happening in 2024? Um, yes. Listen along as we discuss Pioneers in Skirts and how the film's fabulous story-telling format easily kicks off must-have conversations. Some of our favorite moments? Learning the difference between being an ally and being a sponsor. Encouraging those who do wish to be an agent of change to look inward first. DEI: a hot topic and one which we may have surprising opinions on. Stats vs Storytelling and why one is a much more powerful tool than the other. If you have a wife, daughter, niece, sister, or know a female, Pioneers in Skirts is a must-see. Listen along and find out why. *** Where can you find everything you need to know about Ashley Maria and Lea-Ann? Watch it, share it, host a viewing party! Nearly Departed will begin shooting in 2025 and we can all be a part of it! Nearly Departed - written by Molly Quinlan Artwick and directed by Ashley Maria - is the story of Charlie and Jules, two sisters at odds discovering how to move on from their father's death. This heartfelt piece deals with the dark, trying, and often funny ways grief manifests. *** Can't get enough of us? Well, you're one of very few. Get to know us! Jyl Barlow has all things Jyl! This month on Whine & Wine, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ashley Maria and Lea-Ann Berst. This dynamic, daughter-mother duo is behind the short film, Super Human Anxiety, which will premiere on July 28, 2024, at LA Shorts, the longest-running film festival in Los Angeles. LA Shorts is a qualifying event for the Academy Awards, BAFTA, the Canadian Screen Awards, and the Goya Awards. In other words…LA Shorts is kind of a big deal. Super Human Anxiety's focus is on Whitney–a teenager navigating strong emotions and how a teacher is able to teach Whitney how to redirect those strong emotions into superpowers. Anxiety is rising among teens and this impact film will serve as a much-needed tool for those affected, whether personally or as someone who simply wants to help. Super Human Anxiety comes on the heels of Ashley Maria's documentary Pioneers in Skirts which dives into the roadblocks many girls and women encounter when chasing their aspirations. For Ashley Maria, both films are very personal and true to her experiences as an award-winning female in the film industry. To reach as many people as possible, Super Human Anxiety will be offered at no cost to those who work closely with teens navigating mental health challenges. This episode was so interesting to record (so much so that my note-taking was weak). The bonus? We'll have a continuation of our conversation in our next episode when we do a deep dive into Pioneers in Skirts. ** Interested in following Ashley Maria's work? Good, you should be. Berst on their social impact project Pioneers In Skirts, a multi-award-winning film that examines the barriers and setbacks women confront in their careers.
