The year is 1960. Sorry, 2022. Three men who are mad about Mad Men are smoking herbal cigarettes and getting a little chatty about one of the greatest television dramas of all time. We begin with the show's pilot, of course, titled "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," but this isn't your typical rewatch podcast. One of our hosts has only seen a handful of episodes over a decade ago, one has seen the show only one time through, and the last has rewatched the show almost a dozen times. We won't be spoiling what happens in later episodes, so even if you're totally new to Mad Men, we're here to guide you on a carousel through time, advertising, and hopefully some answers to the eternal question, Who is Don Draper? Mad Men was created by Matthew Weiner and aired on AMC from 2007 to 2015. The show stars Jon Hamm, January Jones, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Robert Morse, and many more. The opening instrumental theme heard at the beginning of this podcast is "A Beautiful Mine" by RJD2. Podcast illustration is by Jon Negroni. You can find all episodes of the Mad Men Men podcast on theyoungfolks.com. The hosts of this episode are Jon Negroni, Will Ashton, and Michael Overhulse. Pianist/composer Thelonious Monk was and still is one of the most important figures in Modern Jazz. In the 1950s he was neglected by the critics and many musicians. He did have his supporters in both fraternities but work was scarce and his records didn't sell and his music was never heard on Jazz radio. Tonight the Jazz Show presents two pivotal recording sessions that are now classics although they were pretty well ignored in their time. The first is Monk's final session for Blue Note from May of 1952. This well organized date was for a sextet with trumpeter Kenny Dorham and saxophonists Lou Donaldson and Lucky Thompson on alto and tenor respectively. Nelson Boyd on bass and the great Max Roach on drums and Mr. Monk. Five then new tunes were recorded and a trio track. The second session was one of his most relaxed and successful for Prestige Records done in 1954. A fine quintet with trumpeter Ray Copeland, a Monk favourite and a then new voice on the New York scene, tenor saxophonist Frank Foster. They blend well. Curly Russell is on bass and Monk's best buddy, Art Blakey is on drums. Three new Monk tunes are presented here and one great old standard, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" is given a wonderful Monkish treatment. This was not a working band but it sounded like one. Early Monk from 1952 and 1954 in super form tonight. The beginning of a month long series of Jazz features with Thelonious Monk.

From Here To Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death (W.W. Norton) In From Here To Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death, mortician Caitlin Doughty explores the world’s funeral traditions—from robotic graves in Japan to an Indonesian village where families live with the bodies of their dead for months, even years, prior to the funeral. Following up on her New York Times best-selling book SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES, the author argues that in modern America, funerals have become procedural and impersonal, meant to sanitize and distance the survivors’ from confrontation with mortality—all in the name of profit and “dignity.” The result is a culture pervaded by death anxieties and bereft of traditions that would help people make sense of their own mortal ends. Doughty advocates for alternative rituals designed to save us from the funeral-industrial complex. In her travels, Doughty encounters funeral traditions that, to our eyes, may appear both beautiful and appalling. The ancient Greek historian Herodotus tells a story about two nations with very different perspectives on death: the Greeks and the Callatians. The Greeks cremate their dead and are repulsed by cannibalism, while the Callatians consume their dead and are repulsed by cremation. Herodotus’s lesson remains true to this day: the funeral traditions of other cultures almost always strike the outsider as barbaric. Doughty, however, goes beyond ghoulish spectacle to ask how different cultures benefit from their unique funeral traditions and to question how our own culture might learn from them. Readers travel with Doughty as she learns about, and even participates in: The Japanese tradition of kotsuage, the ritual removal of large bone fragments from cremated ashes by family members using chopsticks A nonprofit mobile funeral pyre operation in Colorado that dodged local ordinances to revive a funeral tradition that dates back to prehistory A museum in Guanajuato, Mexico, for the mummies of disinterred corpses whose relatives could not pay the cemetery’s fee for “perpetual” interment; the museum includes a section for Angelitos, dead children whose bodies were believed to connect survivors to favored souls who could advocate for the living in Heaven An American research effort aimed at composting the dead and returning the body to its natural position in the cycle of life, death, and renewal A Bolivian woman’s efforts to collect and care for ñatitas, preserved human skulls that are treated like community advisors and are alleged to grant wishes; the skulls are at the center of conflicts between traditional beliefs and Roman Catholic teachings and, occasionally, enjoy smoking a cigarette In her encounters with these funeral rites and traditions, Doughty explores the profound value they hold for the community. From Here To Eternity is an eye-opening exploration of the many different, and often surprising, ways humanity embraces the inescapable fact of death, filled with vivid and sometimes shocking details about how diverse cultures send off their dead. But Doughty’s tour of the borderlands between the living and the dead is never simply morbid. As uncanny and surreal as some traditions may initially appear, when Doughty contrasts them to the vapid and emotionally sterile experiences promoted by America’s funeral industry, the depth and value of these ritualized customs is revealed. In a voice that is sympathetic, endlessly curious, and often engagingly humorous, Doughty advocates for a more humane and involved approach to mourning rituals. With lively illustrations by Landis Blair—whose style is a perfect match for Doughty’s humane and insightful prose—From Here To Eternity is a book about death for the living, and the importance of the rituals that help us understand how a meaningful end can enrich our sense of what it means to be alive. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Leonard, Coleman & Blunt. Leonard, Coleman and Blunt have been around the world and back again several times each as the lead singers of three of the most legendary vocal groups of all time: the Temptations, Platters and Drifters. The three Washington, DC natives have a back-story right out of a Hollywood movie; Leonard, Coleman & Blunt grew up singing together in church and on street corners throughout the 1960s before finding fame and fortune separately, then reuniting after 30 years to harmonize together once again. Glenn Leonard and his sweet tenor voice joined Motown's legendary Temptations, recording ten hit albums, touring the world, and singing lead on many of their 1970s and 1980's R&B hits. Joe Coleman joined the Platters for a two-decade stint as the group's lead singer in addition to gaining a successful career as a songwriter and playwright. Joe Blunt performed and recorded with the Drifters for over a decade in venues all over the world alongside Ben E. King and Johnny Moore, earning a Lifetime Achievement Award from Sony Records. Concert attendees are treated to incredible showmanship, classic dance moves, and some of the biggest hits of all time, including “My Girl," “The Way You Do The Things You Do," “Get Ready,” “The Great Pretender,” “Only You,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” “Under The Boardwalk,” “On Broadway,” “Save The Last Dance For Me,” and many, many more.

Listen to the interview by clicking the arrow on the audio player below. Generally speaking, our culture is not one that deals well with death. Caitlin Doughty, an LA-based mortician and best-selling author, is on a life-long quest to change this. When we spoke, we discussed: —how she became a "death professional"  —the biggest misunderstanding that most people have about the work she does —and how, with her new venture Undertaking L.A., she aims to help people help themselves...to take care of dead bodies. About Caitlin Doughty: Caitlin Doughty is an LA-based mortician and writer who founded The Order of the Good Death, a movement focused  on preparing "a death phobic culture for their inevitable mortality." Doughty hosts a regular video series called Ask a Mortician and is also the author of The New York Times bestseller Smoke Gets In Your Eyes...and Other Lessons from the Crematory. Photos: Used with permission from Caitlin Doughty. Production notes: This episode was edited by Chris Walton of Visual Story Productions. The interview was conducted via Skype, and unfortunately we didn't have a good connection. I'm grateful to Chris for cleaning up the sound as much as possible, and I would ask that you consider the remaining effects "atmospheric." Thanks also to forensic pathologist Dr. Judy Melinek for suggesting Caitlin Doughty as an interview subject.

In this final installment of songs from Theatresports Lightning Doubles, Doug Bayne, Trudy Cooper and Tom Dunstan belt out a song about Soap Opera addiction. There are two versions of this song; the first was live and completely improvised. The second was, well, half-live, half-not. If the idea of improvising in front of 100,000 screaming fans interests you, you should have a listen. The Original VersionOnce again, the actors start the music, and the song is all the better for it. The beginning caught me completely by surprise, actually; when the title was announced, I mentally got geared up for an old piano standard (like Smoke Gets In Your Eyes). Suddenly Doug counts in and starts stamping his feet and grunting... giving me a couple of seconds to get a drums-and-bass patch up and running. (Just goes to show that, if you use different patches, you probably need quick access.)Listen to Soap Gets In Your Eyes Powered by Podbean.comDoug breaks a bunch of conventions in this song. For starters, there isn't any singing; it's not a rap, more of a spoken-word rock song. Doug also pretty much checks out for the chorus, leaving it up to Tom and Trudy. Like A Tim Tam Too Far, if you're not from Australia, you might need a little background before the in-jokes make sense.Neighbours: Popular long-running Australian soap opera; 30 minutes a day, screened in prime time. Will probably run until the 22nd century.Paradise Beach: Short-lived Australian soap opera.Jason: Jason Donovan, an actor/singer who featured in Neighbours in the 80's.Kylie: Kylie Minogue, the Australian singer/actor who was also in Neighbours in the 80's. Jason and Kylie's characters (Scott and Charlene) got married in the series and moved to Queensland. Somehow all retiring Neighbours characters either die or move to Queensland. What are they trying to say?Even though there's no melody as such, as usual there's a bridge in the song towards the end. The chord progression changes and the music gets a little sparser, so it's hopefully some good light-and-shade for the audience. Doug and I do a nice synchronised stop at the end of the bridge, putting an offer out there for Trudy and Tom that they happily pick up.I'm sad that Doug and Trudy no longer perform; they're both legends of the Brisbane impro scene. Tom is more of a living legend, currently performing with several groups in Brisbane and Sydney, and with some great projects on the boil.Soap Gets In Your Eyes, the Arena SpectacularYou may have heard improvised songs before, but you haven't heard anything like this. Listen to Soap Gets In Your Eyes - the Arena Mix Powered by Podbean.comFor some reason we decided this song would have been fantastic if it was a real stadium rock song. To make this come true, we secured the services of David Lovell (guitarist and bass player extraordinaire) and his friend Mr Drums (who I'm sure has a name, lost in the sands of time) to put down band parts in a studio. Because we recorded the original performance with isolated microphones, we had a nice clean recording with Doug lead vocals, and a slightly less-clean recording with Tom and Trudy's backing.Overlay some crowd noise, chop and arrange the vocals, add way more echo/delay than any self-respecting sound engineer would add... Hey presto - Doug, Trudy and Tom performing to thousands of screaming fans. Performing to thousands of screaming fans? The way impro should be. ;)Download Soap Gets In Your Eyes (mp3)Download Soap Gets In Your Eyes - The Arena Mix (mp3)That's it!That's all for this series of Lightning Doubles songs. I hope to bring you more improvised stuff from Brisbane in future posts, hopefully with less tape hiss and more video! If you live in Brisbane, you can catch the great-great-grandchild of Lightning Doubles: Impro Gladiators, running at the Paddo Tavern on Wednesday nights in 2009 from April to August. See you there!

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Lance Bernard Bryant of the Legendary Singing Group "The Platters"About Harvey's guest:Today's guest, Lance Bernard Bryant, is a current member of one of the greatest, most popular and beloved legendary music groups in history: The Platters. Founded in 1952 by bass singer Herb Reed, The Platters brought us 40 hit singles, including the classic songs, “Only You”, “The Great Pretender”, “My Prayer”, “Twilight Time”, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”, “Harbor Lights”, “Enchanted”, “Winner Take All”, “The Magic Touch”, and many more. The Platters was the first Black group to reach international superstardom, with over 80 million records sold worldwide.  They've been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. And their classic hit songs “Only You” and “The Great Pretender” have been included in the Grammy Museum list of the greatest songs of the 20th century. They were the only act to have 3 songs included on the “American Graffiti” soundtrack, which is widely credited with igniting an oldies revival throughout the world in the mid-1970s. And the global love affair with the music of The Platters just keeps growing. In fact, their music is so phenomenally popular, that on Spotify ALONE, their songs are streamed more than 3 million times every month. And despite a tumultuous history spanning decades of racism, unscrupulous identity theft and legal battles, and despite the passing of all the original members, the Platters as a group has endured and evolved and thrived over 7 decades, thanks to Herb Reed's successor, Fred Balboni Jr., who has worked tirelessly to preserve and honour the legacy of this monumentally important group, which continues to bring their magnificent timeless music to concert halls throughout the world.  They are currently on a North American tour. And our guest is Lance Bernard Bryant, one of the 4 current members of The Platters, who's taken time out of his very busy touring schedule to speak with me today. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/To learn more about The Platters, go to:https://theplatters.com/https://www.facebook.com/ThePlattersOfficialhttps://www.instagram.com/theplattersofficial/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxW6g_zRPp6GqePPK-uEm-Q?subhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/the-platters/368242https://open.spotify.com/artist/6KWcxMWVNVIYbdOQyJtsSy@harveybrownstone,#harveybrownstone,@harveybrownstoneinterviews,#harveybrownstoneinterviews,#theplatters,@theplatters,#ThePlattersOfficial,@ThePlattersOfficial,#OnlyYou,#TheGreatPretender,#MyPrayer,#TwilightTime,#SmokeGetsInYourEyes,#HarborLights,#Enchanted,#WinnerTakeAll,#TheMagicTouch,#HerbReed,#FredBalboniJrAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
