Jyl & Kathy are back after a quick break because...life.This month, we explore our feral childhoods and why today's generations could benefit from a more free-range approach while being raised. Signs of a Feral Childhood? Well, for one, you were probably born in the 70's.We left the house after breakfast and didn't return home until someone's mom rang a bell (or the streetlights went on).We rode our bikes to the corner store, but we didn't always clarify which corner. We walked a mile to the local pool with a dollar in change for lunch from the vending machine, which was located further down the street. We had no need for bus notes. We just got on a different bus if we decided to go somewhere else after school. Later, we'd ring our mothers to let them know where we were. Our main source of hydration was the water hose. Our parents had no way to contact us once we were out of their sight. We typically had to be out of their sight within ten minutes of finishing breakfast.Televisions broadcast a message at 10:00 pm asking, “Do you know where your kids are?” Latchkey kids wasn't a term; it was just how we lived. We were free-range children, and we are better because of it. Why? We can solve any problem at any time. We rarely have to ask for seventeen different opinions in order to make a decision. We left the nest with confidence and zero thoughts of returning. We had more life skills before grade school than today's baby adults have coming out of collegeWe can get blood out of anything.  Our Nonsor this week was Carpool Karaoke. We also talked about Jyl's amazing Ninja Thirst, our Holland America Cruise Tour, the Jefferson Hotel, and more. Spotify:Can't get enough of us? Victoria Mundae is a contributing author to several literary compendiums and her writings have appeared in the paranormal literary journal “The Feminine Macabre: A Woman's Journal of All Things Strange and Unusual”. She has also been profiled in the book “A Walk in the Shadows” and in the TV Mini-Series, “The Shadow Dimension”. In addition to writing, paranormal investigations, and embracing the “woo-woo” of life, Victoria co-hosted the long-running paranormal podcast “Edge Of The Rabbit Hole” and later joined the paranormal panel podcast “Black Lotus Live”.With hopes of helping paranormal and esoteric subjects merge into the mainstream narrative, she created the wildly popular “Victoria Mundae's Paranormal Activity” Activity Book Series for both adults and children. Upon deciding to take her writing career to a higher level, Victoria has teamed up and joined forces with “Beyond The Fray Publishing” – a publishing house that caters specifically to the paranormal and true crime genres – and is writing in both the fiction and non-fiction paranormal genres. Here latest book is, My Night in the Most Haunted Hotel in Texas, which is available on Amazon. Riding the wave of popularity of national teen dance shows of the 1950's, St. Louis Hop, hosted by Russ Carter would debut in 1958. More than 47,000 teen dancers would appear on the show regardless of their dance skills, and, it ignored color lines.  Just press play to hear the whole story. ——— Click on search links to see if there are episodes with related content: Andrew Wanko, Arts, Entertainment, and Culture, Television, Civil Rights, Music, Pastimes and Leisure, ——— Podcast Transcript: I'm Andrew Wanko, Public Historian of the Missouri Historical Society, and here's history, on 88.1 KDHX. ——— In the 1950s, television would reshape the nation's relationship with popular music. Shows like American Bandstand brought your favorite singers into your living room, and let you see the latest dances, clothing fashions, and attitudes that went along with their songs. Plenty of St. Louis teenagers were among American Bandstand's 20 million weekly viewers, but many St. Louisans were probably much more excited about a different program. It was almost the exact same set up, but featured their friends and neighbors. ——— The teen dance show “St. Louis Hop” hit local television in January of 1958. The premise was simple – St. Louis teenagers danced around to the latest records, with popular recording stars dropping in for interviews and live performances.  ——— Replicating American Bandstand host Dick Clark's youthful spunk was St. Louis Hop's show host Russ Carter. He ran almost every aspect of the show's production, down to writing his own cue cards. Carter hosted countless celebrity guests on St. Louis Hop, including the Smothers Brothers, Tony Bennett, Chubby Checker, Bobby Darin, and even John Denver. ——— Across its 15-year on-air run, more than 47,000 St. Louis teenagers appeared as dancers on St. Louis Hop. Teens wrote in requesting to be picked, sometimes more than a year in advance. Your dancing skills didn't matter, so long as you adhered to the show's coat-and-tie dress code. Another thing that didn't matter was your race – St. Louis Hop was among the very first integrated shows on St. Louis television, and its producers insisted that the dancers reflect the city around them. ——— The constantly-growing show went through four location changes, filming at the Arena Roller Rink, Casa Loma Ballroom, Jefferson Hotel, and finally the KSD television studios. By the late 1960s, fads were changing and teen dance shows were losing their audiences to other entertainment. St. Louis Hop held on until 1973, when Pepsi pulled out as the show's main advertiser, and the show was forced off the air. ——— Here's History is a joint production of the Missouri Historical Society and KDHX. I'm Andrew Wanko, and this is 88.1 KDHX, St. Louis. ———

And coming back for their hotels has meant a literal hockey stick if you were to graph out rate and occupancy performance since Spring Break. They're setting records and looking to close out 2021 as one of their best ever. But in operations, high rates and occupancy have to be supported by engaged staff, a full suite of amenities and services, and the ability to get the flywheel turning again. Ken shares how they have been dealing with these challenges and some of the thinking that is going on behind the scenes with respect to balancing “getting back to normal” and what the new normal will actually look like. As an industry we're all in the same body of water, just in different boats. We're all dealing with similar challenges and my hope is that in this conversation you'll find commonality, camaraderie and perhaps some ideas on where you can take your own property. About Ken Ken Merkel is the Senior Vice President of Operations at Avocet Hospitality Group. Since joining the team in January 2009, Merkel has overseen all aspects of operations for Avocet Hospitality Group including employee training and overall guest experience. In his role, Merkel works with team members to ensure that they create strong relationships with guests and the community to deliver memorable experiences and lasting memories. Everyday has the possibility of being unique, different and challenging, but Merkel focuses on working with a group of talented and diverse team members with the ultimate goal of making them happy as his top priority. Originally from Buffalo, New York, Merkel moved to Charleston in 1997 and has more than 30 years experience in the hospitality industry. Good morning, RVA! It’s 70 °F, and today will be hot. Expect highs in the mid 90s and Feels Like temperatures even higher. If you’ve got to go outside for some reason, wear a hat and remember to hydrate! Expect similar hot—and mostly rain-free—weather over the holiday weekend.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 532↗️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 30↗️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 51↘️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 25, Henrico: 12, and Richmond: 14). Since this pandemic began, 235 people have died in the Richmond region. So you can see everything in on place, I put together the graphs of new reported positive cases, new deaths, and new hospitalizations plus their seven-day averages here. New positive cases have stuck right around 500 for the past couple weeks, while deaths have increased, and hospitalizations have bounced around a bit. According to VDH the Commonwealth’s percent posititivity is on the rise since about a week ago, but they just reported a ton of tests (increasing the denominator) a couple days back so that could change. When taken together…I’m not sure what to make of all that. Virginia is certainly not in the same dire straights as our Southern neighbors: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida all reported more than 1,500 new coronavirus cases yesterday. In fact, Florida became the first state to report over 10,000 new cases in a single day since New York back on April 15th. I don’t know what keeps Virginia from slipping off of its 500-cases-per-day plateau, but, like, keep doing whatever it is we’re doing! If you’re hanging out this weekend, please, please keep your distance and your masks on.The Mayor’s march down Monument Avenue continues, and yesterday saw the removal of the Maury statue (his globe still remains) and two Confederate memorial cannons from the median of Monument that I’d totally forgot existed. It requires, admittedly, an immense amount of privilege and a massive lack of curiosity to live in a place and just plain forget about its monuments to white supremacy. I had a chance to ride past the now-empty Jackson plinth, and the statue’s absence is striking (see above). The statue took up a building-sized spot in the intersection and now that it’s gone, the space feels open and airy. Getting rid of that plinth—even though it looks pretty rad and definitely serves as an arresting reminder for what we allowed to stand for 100 years—should be at the top of the City’s list. After we work our way through he State’s dumb and required monument process, the Department of Public Works should redesign that intersection to make it way safer for folks trying to walk, roll, or ride on through. As for protests, VPM’s Coleman Jenningsand the Commonwealth Time’s Eduardo Acevedo tagged along with a Marcus-David Peters march and vigil. About 100 people marched from the Jefferson Hotel, where Peters worked part time, to Chamberlayne’s I-95 on-ramp, where Peters was killed by a Richmond police officer. Bike marshals blocked vehicles from getting on the highway, the Virginia State Police showed up, the two groups talked, and then…both eventually dispersed. In fact, police blocked further traffic from heading towards protestors, and protestors packed up and left after a bit. I don’t know what the two groups talked about or agreed upon, but I hope that last night marks a permanent shift in the way the Virginia State Police choose to respond to our ongoing protests against police violence. It was a small moment, but it feels like progress.Related, or conversely, Whittney Evans, also at VPM, dives into some of the history of complaints, lawsuits, and possible legal chicanery at the Richmond Police Department. That’s a lot of not great stuff in the not-so-distant past of the department, and we’ll have to wait and see how the new chief takes the increased scrutiny and demands to, quite literally, strip his budget. The Virginia Employment Commission’s new unemployment insurance claims numbers are out, and, for the week ending June 27th, 398,669 people filed for unemployment insurance. This is down just 2,203 from the previous week, and, I think, this is the first time in a few months that the number of initial claims has gone up (31,955 compared to 25,293). I have no idea if this is a season trend, a blip in the data, or what. Also, check out this PDF of demographic data for unemployment insurance claims. Since April, Black folks have made up a increasingly larger and large percentage of claims. It’s been a while, but you should check out RPS Superintendent Kamras’s newsletter from yesterday, because he’s got pictures from inside the new River City Middle School that’s being built on the Southside. I’ve been doing this with my parenting person hat on, but also as part of my real job. Universities need to reopen, too, and I sit on one of the committees thinking about this at Brown. So I’m steeped in it, at least enough to organize some of my thoughts. Let’s start by assuming we all have two main goals. Goal #1: protecting safety of kids and staff (teachers, sure, but also cafeteria workers, janitorial staff, coaches and everyone else) and the broader public. Goal #2: if at all possible having kids in classrooms in some way more or less full time. The question then, is: What’s it going to take to do that? I have some thoughts, starting with the big picture and moving to the details. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

Edacious Food Talk for Gluttons

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2017 80:27

Chocolate Work. With Peanut Butter and Community. Meet Tim Gearhart of Gearhart's Fine Chocolates, otherwise known as the Willie Wonka of Charlottesville! The theme of this episode is Ahead of the Curve and how that can help your business tremendously. In Tim's case, his Nostradamus ability to foresee trends paired with his passion have helped Gearhart's to not only become a beloved Charlottesville institution but has expanded his reach to the national level. You can now find Gearhart's on Amazon! I first met Tim during the 2016 Tom Tom Festival where he was part of a local panel discussing the triumphs and challenges of running a food business. I was completely captivated by his story as well as his advice and knew I had to have him on the podcast. Tim was born in Detroit and landed in Virginia as a teenager. The 1980's was a volatile time, perfect for an oddball kid like Tim who was way into food before it was a trend, and who spent his spare time eating at the C&O and trying new foods whenever he could. His first job was as a dishwasher at Duner's where he eventually worked his way up to busboy. After some time in the Marines, he attended the Culinary Institute of America and traveled, creating pastries in various kitchens around the world, including one in a 1,000-year old castle as well as right here at Keswick. "Another cool thing about the Charlottesville food scene is that a lot of these folks are still here...They're doing what they love...that's what it's about...finding that passion...whether you're a super-creative architect or a chef at a famous restaurant, that's what it's about." The passion for pastry switched over to chocolate because of a "perfect storm" as he describes it, one that affected him nationally, professionally, and personally. At the time he'd just opened Hamilton's with Bill Hamilton. When he mused one afternoon about how fun it would be to open a chocolate shop, Bill replied, "I'm in!" The rest is history. Gearhart's Fine Chocolates just celebrated 16 years in business and their new, expanded location with coffee and PASTRY opened last year. There's even a window where you can watch Charlottesville's own Oompa Loompa's hard at work creating culinary confections. "Chocolate was the next thing up after wine in the 80's and beer in the 90's...coffee in the 90's...kind of this time of people saying wow, there might be a local option...this doesn't have to have wax in it...it can made to be eaten right now...it can have fresh herbs...it was the right place, right time...timing in the world of business is a huge thing." Gearhart's uses eight different varieties of chocolate, never purchasing a disc from a company he doesn't know or trust. The Fair Trade designation? A little foggy, similar to the organic label. Often questionable, not always reliable. A better way is to look locally for items like peaches or honey. Do a lot of homework. Ask a lot of questions. Tim's palate and eye for creation is extraordinary. He's got an uncanny skill of figuring out what flavors go with what. If you've had his Malted Caramels, meant to be eaten with beer, or his Earl Grey Tea chocolates, or his Miso Caramels, you know exactly what I mean. And it's not just about chocolate! Tim is a strong advocate for community initiatives and fundraising for folks who need it. When I announced The Big Love Bakesale fundraising initiative, Tim was one of the first ones to step forward and donate an 8-person chocolate tour. His Peanut Butter Pups raise money for veterans with PTSD. The story behind how these whimsical chocolates were created is so heartwarming and another great example of how local businesses in Charlottesville include social entrepreneurship as part of their mission. Tim is a Gulf War veteran himself. How does his military background as a Marine benefit and inform his chosen career? Attention to detail, consistency. You have to be a little OCD to be a chocolatier and being a Marine helped with that aspect of it. "It absolutely set the foundation and was a humongous part of the puzzle for me...I was the only one in my group who signed up to be a cook...30 years ago it was making soups from scratch, gravies from scratch, it was real cooking." Why is brainstorming one of the most fun things you can do as an entrepreneur? Especially in the world of chocolate, where you have to perform within extremely strict parameters? We talk about how Tim does this. You have to be agile in business, examining every angle in order to stay in business and be successful. Maybe doing things you never thought you would like corporate work, wholesale and online selling, weddings. Another good example? Birthday parties! Gearhart's has become a go-to space for these events, even though the decibel level goes through the roof when a group of 8-year-old girls comes in to celebrate. But it's fun and Gearhart's has wholeheartedly embraced this new role of community celebration space. "I think we are absolutely making the best product we have ever made. Right now. It's the most consistent, and that's so much about the people." Gearhart's employees 20 people, many of whom have been with him for years. A real testament to his abilities as a both a business owner and a teacher. As he says there are many different paths to success, and spending $60K on culinary school is just one of them. Sometimes just taking a job and working your way from the ground up can be a better, more meaningful method. "I never ever would have imagined that I would be even where I'm at today...now I'm just like this is great but where's the next level for myself and for my shop and for my employees?" One thing? Honeycomb chocolates for every single pillow in the Jefferson Hotel. A project that takes creativity and focus to make sure each chocolate stays fresh and tastes great. Plus, launching this week just in time for Father's Day - Virginia Craft Beer Chocolate! Tim partnered with Champion, Hardywood, Devil's Backbone, and Port City breweries to create artisanal chocolate treats that include your favorite brews. If it's anything like his wine chocolates these will sell out fast. What chocolatiers does he admire? What others do are just poseurs? Why is slow growth best and what happens when you suddenly find yourself on The Today Show? What's his busiest season? Hint, it's NOT Valentine's Day! We talk about that new generation of chefs coming up and how Food Network keeps perpetuating that myth of an easy ride. We even talk hockey. A terrific episode and a big reason why Gearhart's is not just my favorite chocolate shop, but my new favorite coffee shop. I recently sat down with Lieutenant Colonel Brian A. Payne and David Kasten of the U.S. Army Irregular Warfare Center (AIWC) at the Jefferson Hotel bar here in Washington, DC.  This is part one of that conversation.  Brian is the Director of AWIC and David is its Chief of Interagency Coordination. Our guests show that irregular warfare was a dominant feature of American wars long before 9/11. It was a really fascinating conversation full of thoughtful analysis and war stories - over drinks of course. We hear everything from Brian's tactical response to a village band in Haiti to David not joining the French Foreign Legion and becoming a sniper instead. Listen! Needless to say, none of the views expressed by Brian and David represent the opinions of the U.S. Army, Department of Defense, or any part of the U.S. government.
