Can you say riveting?? Jyl & Kathy are back after a quick break because...life.This month, we explore our feral childhoods and why today's generations could benefit from a more free-range approach while being raised. Signs of a Feral Childhood? Well, for one, you were probably born in the 70's.We left the house after breakfast and didn't return home until someone's mom rang a bell (or the streetlights went on).We rode our bikes to the corner store, but we didn't always clarify which corner. We walked a mile to the local pool with a dollar in change for lunch from the vending machine, which was located further down the street. We had no need for bus notes. We just got on a different bus if we decided to go somewhere else after school. Later, we'd ring our mothers to let them know where we were. Our main source of hydration was the water hose. Our parents had no way to contact us once we were out of their sight. We typically had to be out of their sight within ten minutes of finishing breakfast.Televisions broadcast a message at 10:00 pm asking, “Do you know where your kids are?” Latchkey kids wasn't a term; it was just how we lived. We were free-range children, and we are better because of it. Why? We can solve any problem at any time. We rarely have to ask for seventeen different opinions in order to make a decision. We left the nest with confidence and zero thoughts of returning. We had more life skills before grade school than today's baby adults have coming out of collegeWe can get blood out of anything.  Our Nonsor this week was Carpool Karaoke. We also talked about Jyl's amazing Ninja Thirst, our Holland America Cruise Tour, the Jefferson Hotel, and more. Spotify:Can't get enough of us? In this month's episode, we talk about bullying and, while doing so, we mention suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to a friend, family member, or dial/text 988 for help. You are not alone and I mean that. This is something that I have struggled with in the past. Feel free to reach out. - Jyl *** This month, Kathy and Jyl discuss bullying as we unravel our truth. Our truth? Our truth is that today's bullying is not the same that we grew up with. Today, it is much more cutting and dangerous. Bullying is defined as seeking to hard, intimidate, or coerce and there are far too many avenues for it to live on in 2024. Types of bullying are physical, verbal, relational, and cyberbullying. While physical bullying is the easiest to spot, the others are often much more harmful. Bullying is typically repeated over and over as many feel unsure of how to stop it. We encourage you to be part of the change. You can make a difference. You can be a part of the solution. You can help change the narrative. Some numbers: 1 in 5 students under the age of 18 experience bullying 160,000 children miss school daily due to the fear of bullying How you can help: Pay attention to the signs. Notice the moment when you feel that something is off. See something, say something. Step in kindly and softly to remove the victim from the situation. If you feel comfortable doing so, de-escalate the bully. Follow up with them as there is a high possibility their actions are born from personal struggle.  What if you're the bully? Acknowledge that you have tendencies that make others feel vulnerable or intimidated. Ask yourself why. Look inward. What does bullying bring to you? Get help. There are so many resources available to help you work through your own challenges and find a better path. Don't feel afraid to apologize and present a better version of yourself. Nonsor: Kind Lips Joshua Neumann first dreamed up Kind Lips lip balm but found his mother was not quite as enthusiastic about entering the lip balm business. This month on Whine & Wine, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ashley Maria and Lea-Ann Berst. This dynamic, daughter-mother duo is behind the short film, Super Human Anxiety, which will premiere on July 28, 2024, at LA Shorts, the longest-running film festival in Los Angeles. LA Shorts is a qualifying event for the Academy Awards, BAFTA, the Canadian Screen Awards, and the Goya Awards.  In other words…LA Shorts is kind of a big deal. Super Human Anxiety's focus is on Whitney–a teenager navigating strong emotions and how a teacher is able to teach Whitney how to redirect those strong emotions into superpowers. Anxiety is rising among teens and this impact film will serve as a much-needed tool for those affected, whether personally or as someone who simply wants to help.  Super Human Anxiety comes on the heels of Ashley Maria's documentary Pioneers in Skirts which dives into the roadblocks many girls and women encounter when chasing their aspirations. For Ashley Maria, both films are very personal and true to her experiences as an award-winning female in the film industry.  To reach as many people as possible, Super Human Anxiety will be offered at no cost to those who work closely with teens navigating mental health challenges. This episode was so interesting to record (so much so that my note-taking was weak). The bonus? We'll have a continuation of our conversation in our next episode when we do a deep dive into Pioneers in Skirts. ** Interested in following Ashley Maria's work? Good, you should be. If you follow the show (and you should), you may remember our holiday gift to you: Ask a Gen Z, an episode on which Kathy and I grilled our friend, Sydney, on all things that don't translate from generation to generation. It was so enlightening that we invited that Gen Z pal back to turn the tables on us. We absolutely should have expected Sydney to show ready to...well, okay, not really ready...but to show ready to wing it. Very on-brand for Gen Z. It was another great episode in which we proved how important it is for women to keep those cross-generational lines of communication open. Listen along as we discuss: Whether anything really changes from generation to generation. How the characters are the same in every friend circle, no matter the age group. Why it is cringe when the next generation does life differently than we might have. How the updates in gender roles have given women more options...including total independence. Rot. Yes. We revisit rot and why it is so difficult for Gen X to have quiet time. Our Nonsor this month is also a sneak peek to next month's episode in which we will chat with the producer/directors of the film Pioneers in Skirts. Wow. That's (almost) all I can say. In this final episode of our current stepmom series, it's a threesome! A three-way. Wait, what now? It's Kathy, Jyl, AND Rich as Kathy wraps up her fabulous round of interviews regarding Jyl's book, What to Expect When You Weren't Expecting. This was another amazing block of time well spent as we talked together about: The misconceptions about boundaries Compassion vs Solutions Which is most important: the marriage, the family, or the children? Why that five-year mark in blended families is so important. And more! This was the first time Rich & Kathy met in person and the first time he experienced the Kathy & Jyl show live. Deer in headlights? Table for one. This episode's nonsor is the Angus Barn. The Angus Barn tells the story of Jyl & Rich's relationship and is where What to Expect When You Weren't Expecting was born. This month's episode of Whine & Wine has a pretty major plot twist as your host, Jyl, is nowhere to be found. Well, we knew where she was. As a follow-up to S2Ep4, The Most Unqualified Interview, on which Kathy put Jyl on the interview hot seat, this month it was Rich's turn. For those not familiar, Rich is the luckiest man in the world, Jyl's husband, and also the topic of many stories in Jyl's best-selling memoir "What to Expect When You Weren't Expecting (Parenting Tales from the Most Unqualified (Step)Mom Ever". It is fairly common within the step-circuit to hear from the stepparents...but how often do we hear from the biological parent? Rich's advice is top-notch and a MUST LISTEN for the bio-half of all blended families. If we could sum up that advice in a few words? Well, Rich found the perfect way with this Pulp Fiction quote: Pride fucks with you. Fuck Pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps. Listen along as Rich opens up about the things he might have done differently including: * Having real conversations about expectations whether related to marriage, raising kids, or what each partner brings from their pasts. * When to stand down and let life play out versus times when it is truly necessary to step in. * Setting aside that pesky pride. * Putting marriage first. Yes, that's right--marriage first, not the children. This interview is packed!! You'll even get to hear about the first time Rich heard Jyl play a butthole symphony (such a treat). Has it really only been a year since Jyl's best-selling memoir, What to Expect When You Weren't Expecting, hit bookshelves around the world? Kind of. This book about the challenges of building a blended family has been scooped up by (step)moms worldwide as they've discovered that they are not alone. Jyl has appeared on podcasts in several countries, chatted with a few radio hosts, and even put on her lip gloss for a live television interview. None of that was as terrifying as this month's episode of Whine & Wine in which Kathy takes the lead like a baby Barbara Walters. To celebrate the release of What to Expect When You Weren't Expecting's audiobook (read by Jyl and her husband, Rich), Kathy finally got the interview she'd been begging for and she arrived with pages of notes. Listen along in the first of a three-episode series as the Whine & Wine team dives into the world of blended families. Want to check out the book first? Choose your media! Buy What to Expect When You Weren't Expecting (Parenting Tales of the Most Unqualified (Step)Mom Ever) here. *** Sneak Peek from the book? Sure: The truth is, nobody dreams of marrying a man with an ex-wife and pre-made kids. The reality is, it happens anyway. What to Expect When You Weren't Expecting is a memoir chronicling Jyl Barlow's bumpy road to success as a (step)mother. Shared are the struggles of being inserted into an existing family that has yet to fully emerge from the emotional woodchipper of divorce. Jyl shares real-world lessons, not the mumbo-jumbo one can receive for the low price of a co-pay. If you are a (step)mom, if you are on the path to becoming a (step)mom, or if you know a (step)mom, this book will serve as a sanity saver, offering endless reassurance in knowing that you are not alone in your struggle to find stability.  This memoir is for the whole family, meant to be shared among husbands and mothers-in-law and (step)children and ex-wives. What to Expect When You Weren't Expecting offers readers a greater understanding of just how difficult it is for (step)mothers to dive headfirst into a role in which they are typically not welcome. 222: What to Expect When You Weren't Expecting With Jyl Barlow One of my least favorite stepfamily comments is, “Well you knew what you were signing up for.” That's like telling a new mom or dad, well you knew parenting was going to be hard so I don't want to hear you complain about it.  In both situations, you do not know what to expect until you are living it out in real-time. Mostly because every situation is so unique just like every child is unique.  Now of course there are some common situations most stepfamilies face and this episode is full of them. New Year's Resolutions: We're Doing It Wrong

New Year's Resolutions: We're Doing It Wrong This month, Kathy and Jyl take a deep dive into their New Year's Resolutions. Just kidding, no diving necessary as we learned something about each other: Neither of us approaches the New Year with an unachievable punch list that will put us under unnecessary pressure. You shouldn't either. Why? Check out this research from the Google: Research suggests that only 9% of Americans who make resolutions complete them.  Research shows that 23% of people quit their resolution by the end of the first week, 43% quit by the end of January, and all but that dwindling 9% quit. Why? Many resolutions are created based on tradition rather than need. "Need" is much more motivating and that need may not come until a random date in the future like July 23rd. Wait until then. Obstacles. For many, obstacles are a dream killer when it comes to resolutions. A missed day at the gym due to snow, a sale on Ben & Jerry's and suddenly, wait, what was your resolution? Size matters. Many create resolutions that are simply too big. Life updates should be done in small chunks so that one might feel several hints of success over a longer period rather than continue eyeing some unlikely win. Accountability. Who needs it? Resolutions are for those still full of hope and energy and the ability to stick to something. Not that we're not, but, well... Thoughts from Jyl: I realized that New Year's resolutions were yet another way I could spend months beating myself up for not reaching success. My current approach is tiered with a few goals that are slam dunks, a couple that are challenging, and one stretch goal, such as writing a book (or in this 2024's case, publishing an audiobook). Thoughts from Kathy: I put a twist on the traditional resolution this year by digging into things I want to rid myself of in 2024. This was a group activity with friends and, after we wrote down the items/people/etc that we would be happier without, we burned those lists as we said goodbye to those things that were going to drag us down. What we agreed on the most? Forgiveness. Yes, even (or especially) when it comes to resolutions. Forgive and Forget, you are under no pressure to perform. If you've made a resolution and it isn't working out, set it aside for a month and see if it's still important. No? Then leave it behind. You didn't need that resolution anyway. All that being said? Of course, we did give ourselves a couple of dreams for 2024. Jyl: Publish Audiobook (stretch goal!) | Lose the riff-raff | Wear the jewelry | Clean the pantry | Career Casual Kathy: Start doing voiceovers | Focus on health but not in an obsessive way | Organize the freezer | Leave work at work This episode was not sponsored by Any Adventure or Pixie & Pan Vacations so absolutely check them out! This month, we take a deep dive into things we are grateful for. No, not the standard, canned response (“my family”) but even further down the path.  Want to find out what the people around you are truly grateful for? Ask for five bullet points and you will get past the “I have to say this” answer to learn what really moves them. This episode was not sponsored by Marcus Uraan, the inventor of Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce. We went back and forth on our list of five items (we chose from either people or experiences) and learned some wonderful things about each other. Hopefully, you will as well. In no particular order: Family: Okay, yes, still number one but also inclusive of those friends who become family and those wonky family members who may teach you by example (good or bad). We both listed this one first in case our family members only listen to the first five minutes. Sports: We both chose sports, though for very different reasons. For Kathy, sports reeled her in and, she believes, likely kept her out of a lot of trouble. For Jyl, sports was all she knew about herself until a shoulder injury sent her in a different, even better direction.  The Pandemic: Really? No, really. A relationship saver in Jyl's home. Education: But not just the book kind. For Kathy, education means constantly creating opportunities for herself to evolve as a person. Scouting: Kathy's time in Girl Scouts shaped endless relationships including the one with her father. It was through her time as a scout that she quickly recognized the importance of female friendships. Glimpses of God: For Jyl, this book by Michelle Peele was life-changing. Peele bravely shares the story of losing her teenage daughter and the moments prior that ended up mattering so much more than she ever would have imagined.  Travel: Getting outside your bubble may be the most important thing we can do for ourselves. A big plus? Finding out you are not (gasp!) the center of the universe. The Person You Are Kind to Next: Whoa. Jyl may have gone a little deep on this one but, for her, it matters. In sports, we learn that you are only as good as your next swing or hit or landing. In life? You are how you act towards others and being kind is a huge character plus. Hello? This is a call to action. Get back out there and do something for you that is not at the demand of your employer or school district or roommate. Hobbies are incredibly important for our mental health, yet they are often the first thing dropped when we feel stretched too thin. Why, many of us don't even remember what we like to do in our free time. Don't worry, we have endless suggestions that range from diamond art to Duolingo to naming the birds that frequent your feeder. Okay, maybe not all of them are good suggestions, but still. Have you heard of the 5-Hobby Rule? According to some, we should have hobbies that meet each of these categories: One to make you money One to keep you in shape One to be creative One to build knowledge One to evolve your mindset While we agree that the creators of this guideline have more free time than us, it does make some sense. Last month, we talked about The Meandering Career Path and how having a single job at the same company for the entirety of one's life is incredibly rare. Today, we extend that zig-zag of a challenge into our homes, literally, as we chat about what it's like to move one's entire HOME to a new location. Yes, a fresh start sounds wonderful but, by GAWD, it is terrifying. We have both been on the UHaul end of one of those “start over somewhere else” decisions and thought it would be fun to share the things we learned along those dark, confusing and lonely treks. Key thoughts? Have a plan prior to packing. Are there clubs or organizations you can join? Get yourself on their radar before you say “So long!” to your old life. If you are opting for temporary housing until you can get on your feet–set a finish line. Know when you want to be on your feet and where those feet will be standing and stick to the goal. As you settle in, take the road less traveled and do it without the benefit of your GPS. Really. The quickest way to feel comfortable in your new skin is to get lost - especially if it means asking a stranger for help. You will find most people are quite helpful and welcoming to the new kid in town. Leave your house/apt/condo/tent. Leave it a lot. We have so many avoidance techniques at our fingertips but put them all away and get out in public. It may seem much more appealing to spend days on the couch catching up on Gilmore Girls but now is now the time to wallow under a blanket. Embrace the Suck. This is true in many aspects of life, but especially in starting anew. It will suck. You will cry. You will feel lonely. You will feel like you will never be happy again. Embrace it all as, eventually, those feelings will be a thing of the past.  You are not alone. Ask. Really. Find yourself standing in a checkout line? This month we dive into The Meandering Career Path, a topic at the top of our minds with so many companies offering workforce reductions and with grade schoolers being encouraged to map out an entire life of aspirations in kindergarten. Did you know the average number of jobs held by most people throughout their lifetime is 12? Yeah, we didn't either ... yet here we are, nailing that number. Listen as we chat about what really matters in your career path: Relationships Skill Sets Understanding that you are dispensable (and that's okay!) Using your benefits as a negotiation tool The ability to write an accurate obituary Trying to find that dang piece of cheese How did two gals go from plans to be teachers to rambling in your ear? I'm not actually sure we ever got to that. Special Shoutout to our friend, Karey Lamancusa who has worked for, um, one company her entire life. Ask any Gen X'er (am I doing it right?) about there very first "real" job and you will likely hear how an $18,000 salary was enough for cartwheels. You will also hear how the added benefit of "Paid Vacation" turned those cartwheels into actual flips. It's a big deal - that first time when someone is willing to PAY you to be away. Of course, we couldn't afford more than a trip to our parent's home, but still, PAID? It was a glorious time and also a time when companies stopped just short of demanding their employees take a dang break once a year. Today? It's gotten quite blurry. Why? The multiple names changes? What was once vacation became Paid Time Off which became Personal Time Off which became Unlimited Time Off. Or is this the need for an endless list of colleagues to cover for your absence that, in reality, won't matter very much? Another challenge? Not judging those who do use their vacation. You know what? Stop worrying about them and get something on your schedule. Taking time off from most anything is important at some period, but work especially. As the saying goes - if you end the year with time off left on the table, you didn't do it right. As the other saying goes, no one ever wishes they worked more on their deathbed. Okay, that got dark. Welcome to Whine & Wine Why do female friendships often seem to take so much work? Are we doing this to ourselves with incorrect assumptions, over-scheduling, or putting too much weight on social media? Or, are we just expecting too much from each other? If there is one thing that all women have in common, it is having to fight each and every day for something. Turning on each other in the midst of that fight is, well, not great. Instead: What if we lifted each other up? What if we stopped examining our interactions with a magnifying glass? We also chat about boundaries, permission to say "no," growth via accountability, and getting back to in-person moments. This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. Our goal is to help create safer, more inclusive companies.

BUT - we are not saying that our opinions on these topics are the only opinions to have, quite the contrary. To us, there is not necessarily a right or wrong on these subjects but simply that these subjects are not talked about enough. And so one of our goals is to get other women on to our podcast to give us their opinion and their perspective. I am so excited to have my old college friend, Jyl, on the show to discuss the oh-so important topic of what it means in today's society to have both a full time job and a family. Grow My Salon Business Podcast

I love it anytime I meet someone successful, and especially so, ‘when they are successful hairdressers’. I travel a lot and I meet many hairdressers who complain about the industry, the millennials, gen Z, the competition, Amazon and whatever else they can use as an excuse to blame and justify their lack of success. But then occasionally you meet someone who defies all the reasons as to why you can’t do something and they get on and do it anyway… and that is my guest today.   Her name is Jyl Craven from Jyl Craven Hair Design in Canton Georgia. Jyl is on track to achieve personal sales this year of 600,000 US dollars which many salons with half a dozen staff never achieve and what makes it all the more remarkable is that Canton is a small city with a population of 30,000.   In today's podcast we discuss:   What it takes to be a productive hairdresser How she achieves a personal retail result of around $3000 per week How to pay your team What motivates people today Why developing culture takes time but is worth the wait And loads more. There is a lot of wisdom here, so get a pen and paper and a cup of coffee it’s note-taking time…

We are finally back in 2017 with a new episode!  We talk to Jyl Lutes, schoolteacher and longtime City Council member here in Salinas.  Jyl is a wealth of information on how our local City Council and School Boards operate because of her time there and we try to fit as much as we can into just one hour.  We talk a bit about the hard work that goes into being a member of the School Board and why traffic is so rough around many of our schools.  We touch on the unique situation Salinas has where we have many school districts and a City Council that has to find ways to work together, not always efficiently.  Jyl gives us insight into what goes on in an average week for a City Council member.  Because of her time on the Council, hear about the good times and bad that Salinas has gone through due to the tough economic times Salinas has faced at times.  We briefly had a technical difficulty at about the 39 minute mark and we lost about a minute so hang in there with us because we talk about the difficulty of building and finding affordable housing here in Salinas.   There is a lot we cover in this episode and our thanks to Jyl for being great enough to come in after a long field trip to San Francisco on a rainy day.

It s a common fact of life that there is more to people and things than meets the eye. For example, many people know New Orleans artist Thomas Mann for his jewelry and metal sculptures, but may have been unfamiliar with his interest with food. An accomplished cook and self styled ovo lacto piscean vegetarian, Thomas will get to show off his chops on Food Network s new competitive cooking show "All Star Academy," which premieres Sunday, March 1 at 8 p.m. He gives us the scoop on his network debut and what audiences can expect to tune into. Louisiana Eats roving reporter Jyl Benson is more than just a longtime contributor to our show. She s also a prolific food writer and, most recently, author of a new cookbook "Fun, Funky and Fabulous New Orleans Casual Restaurant Recipes." Along with collaborator Sam Hanna, Jyl discusses how the book came together, both offering an in depth look at their approach to food photography. Also, Chris Boucher, industrial hemp advocate, explains the benefits of Cannabis sativa, the plant often demonized as "The Devil s Weed." While hemp and marijuana are both derivatives of Cannabis sativa, hemp contains no THC, the active chemical that gets marijuana users high. Chris explains why attitudes toward hemp turned sour by the 1930s and why he believes, with new research and growing interest in the product, hemp cultivation will soon become a giant industry in the U.S. We re taking a long look on both sides of the fence on this week s Louisiana Eats Chicken Liver Mousse for all SeasonsChef Isaac Toups, Toups Meatery Makes about 6 cups This versatile recipe can be adapted with other spirits and spice blends to suit the seasons The clove and nutmeg called for here are good choices for winter.
