Long Story Short is a very funny and surprisingly moving new Netflix animated comedy series from the folks behind BoJack Horseman and Tuca & Bertie. The show follows members of one Jewish family by hopping around in time. We see the three siblings (voiced by Ben Feldman, Abbi Jacobson and Max Greenfield) as kids, young adults and in middle-age, as they start having kids of their own. They deal with all the things families deal with – the ups and downs of romantic relationships, parenting, work and, ultimately, loss – but it's also very funny. On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with filmmaker, Accidental Talmudist and longtime “Jewish Journal” contributor Salvador Litvak. Litvak's Passover classic, “When Do We Eat?” stars Max Greenfield, Ben Feldman, Shiri Appleby, Lesley Ann Warren, Michael Lerner, and Jack Klugman. Litvak directed the film that he co-wrote with his wife and partner, Nina Davidovich Litvak. The Litvaks' second movie was “Saving Lincoln.” Their new film “Guns & Moses” is out this summer. “The perennial fifth question of the Passover Seder is, ‘When do we eat?'” Litvak, who is also the author of “Let My People Laugh: Greatest Jewish Jokes of All Time,” says. “There's all these holiday movies… but there was no Passover movie.” When the Litvaks made “When Do We Eat?” they were connected to Judaism, but not yet Orthodox. “The movie's probably a little bit edgier than we would make it today,” Litvak says. “One of the main plot points is that one of the kids doses his dad with a strong hallucinogen at the Passover seder, but also the movie contains wonderful spiritual teachings.” He adds, “[Our dream: that] it would become the Jewish, ‘It's a Wonderful Life,' the movie that people watch every year.” Salvador Litvak shares the backstories behind “When Do We Eat?” and his new Jewish joke book. the connections between Judaism and food, and his recipe for Sal-mon. He also talks about creating The Accidental Talmudist, how that community embraced his Passover classic film aka “My Big Fat Jewish Seder.” “My mom always used to say there's two kinds of people: those who get into conversations in the checkout line at the supermarket and those who don't,” Litvak says. “We are [the first] kind.” Learn more at SalvadorLitvak.com, AccidentalTalmudist.org, and GunsandMosesMovie.com. When you've been busy creating, writing and starring in TV shows and films for a couple of decades, who has time for a hobby? That's been the case for Mark McKinney. This son of a diplomat moved around a lot as a lad and says comedy has always been his hobby. Together with Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCullough and Scott Thompson, he's been performing on stage, film and television as one of the Kids in the Hall since the late 1980s. McKinney also spent a couple of seasons as a writer-performer on Saturday Night Live, helped create, write and act in Slings & Arrows, and appeared in shows such as Man Seeking Woman and Son of a Critch. He also was the showrunner on Less Than Kind and for six seasons co-starred as manager Glen Sturgis on the NBC sitcom Superstore. That didn't leave much room for stamp collecting or skeet shooting. On Mark McKinney Needs a Hobby (Wednesdays on CTV and streaming on Crave), McKinney tries birding, fly fishing, puppetry and even tackled hockey playing robots. He's joined by guests such as comedians Margaret Cho and Deb DiGiovanni, singer Billy Newton-Davis, Superstore co-star Ben Feldman, food critic James Chatto and Muppet puppeteer Trish Leeper. As you'll see in episode one, however, he drew the line when it came to tattooing. Hi Guys, welcome back to TV Reload. Thank you for clicking or downloading on today's episode with Phil Lloyd Creator / Showrunner / Executive Producer from the latest Stan original series Population 11 which is now on Stan Australia. Phil Lloyd is an Australian actor and scriptwriter and partner in the production company Jungleboys. He is best known for his acting role as Myles Barlow in the Australian TV series, Review with Myles Barlow (2008) and the comedy series At Home With Julia, where he played Tim Mathieson, the partner of prime minister Julia Gillard. I personally loved his work with The Moody's and The Moodys Christmas series. Population 11 is inspired by true events (the missing case of Paddy Moriarty - which was the focus of Netflix doco Last Stop Larrimah). Population 11 is about a man who goes missing from a tiny outback town of only 12 residents, and his estranged son, who journeys from the U.S. to find him. The series is very funny and gives you a chance disappear into its world over 12 episodes. I will ask Phil about his thoughts on the documentary that shares the same premise. Which actually surprised me. We will unpack how two write for global audiences and if his writing changes from writing on shows made for Australian audiences. Phil will share the casting decisions on the lead and why Ben Feldman was right for this role. Plus we will get some insights into his collaborators who have worked with Jean Smart and Andy Samberg on previous projects for Stan. There is so much to unpack with Phil and he is really fun to talk to. So sit back and relax as we dive just that little bit deeper into the world of Population 11. Co-hosts Jamie and Rob but heads over the genre mashup film "As Above So Below". A 2014 John Erick Dowdle film, it combines a little Blair Witch handheld horror, with a sprinkle of Harry Potter magic with a few heaping table spoons of Indiana Jones mystery and adventure to cook up a unique, although somewhat muddy, voyage into the gates of Hell under the Paris Catacombs. What genre does this film lean on the most and does it succeed? Is the lead character a charming female Indiana Jones or a narcissist who puts others in constant danger? When does the supernatural stuff start in this film and why? Who the hell is Zed?! Is the handheld horror movie genre over? Will Rob pronounce "Iran" properly by the end of the pod? In this episode we examine two episodes from the very funny NBC sitcom SUPERSTORE, which stars America Ferrera and Ben Feldman, and follows a whole gang of wacky and endearing characters working in a fictional big box store. For our purposes we are going to focus on Mateo, an immigrant from the Philippines who is undocumented and discovers that getting a promotion in the store could mean that he will be discovered and threatened with deportation, as we will see, through some comic and, in some cases touching, circumstances. As with so many of the films and TV we have examined so far, the writers have taken liberties with the truth in order to create drama and comedy. However, out of all the TV shows and movies that we have watched to date for "Immigration at the Movies", SUPERSTORE, we feel. most accurately reflects the dilemma that many foreign national children who become undocumented adults face in the United States -- the land of immense opportunity but incredibly limited options to become "legal". SUPERSTORE, using both humor and heartache, shows the impact that a person's immigration status has on themselves as well as their family and community.

The James Webb Telescope Releases Its First Focused Image This week eager astronomers got an update on the progress of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which launched last December. After a long period of tweaking and alignment, all 18 mirrors of the massive orbiting scope are now in focus. In a briefing this week, Marshall Perrin, the Webb deputy telescope scientist, said that the team had achieved diffraction limited alignment of the telescope. “The images are focused as finely as the laws of physics allow,” he said. “This is as sharp an image as you can get from a telescope of this size.” Although actual scientific images from the scope are still months away, the initial test images had astronomers buzzing. Rachel Feltman, executive editor at Popular Science, joins Ira to talk about the progress on JWST, and other stories from the week in science, including plans to launch a quantum entanglement experiment to the International Space Station, an update on the COVID-19 epidemic, and a new report looking at the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. They'll also tackle the habits of spiders that hunt in packs, and the finding that a galloping gait may have started beneath the ocean's waves. The Climate Crisis Is Driving New Home Improvements A lot of the changes that need to happen to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius need to happen at a huge, international level. But nearly a fifth of carbon emissions in the U.S. come from our homes. Are there things we can do at home to help the climate crisis? And how effective are individual actions? Threshold is a podcast telling stories about our changing environment. And as their fourth season explores what it will take for the world to keep global warming under the crucial 1.5 benchmark, reporter Nick Mott explores what individuals can do to decarbonize their homes. Mott talks to Ira Flatow about his own home improvement project, in a preview of Threshold's next episode. From Succulents To Bugs: Exploring Wildlife Crime The world of science is surprisingly ripe with true crime stories. Consider case number one: Deep in South Africa's Northern Cape, a rare and tiny succulent grows: the Conophytum. Demand for succulents skyrocketed during the pandemic, as more and more people got into the plant keeping hobby. But these succulents only grow in very specific conditions, and poachers will go to great lengths to nab them. The story is the subject of a recent investigation published in National Geographic. Or case two: It's 2018, and a theft has occurred at the Philadelphia Insectarium, a bug museum and education center. In a daring daylight raid, thousands of creatures were taken from the insectarium—right under the nose of the CEO. No one has ever been charged with a crime. This bizarre big story quickly made the rounds of local and national news, which left out the most interesting details, including a surprise ending. The new documentary series “Bug Out” takes us through the twists and turns of this story, from retracing the events of the day of the heist, to a deep look at the illegal international insect trade. The four episodes of “Bug Out” are available to watch now on IMDB TV and Prime Video. Joining Ira to chat about these wildlife true crime stories are Dina Fine Maron, senior wildlife crime reporter for National Geographic and Ben Feldman, director and executive producer of “Bug Out.”
Reality-television expert Andy is back to talk about Pooch Perfect, and why you shouldn't sit, stay in front of the show, including awkward hosting by Rebel Wilson, consent issues with dyeing dogs, and a total lack of narrative tension. Matters improved with Around The Dial, as we discussed Genius: Aretha, Superstore, Race To The Center Of The Earth, Tough As Nails, The Bridge, and Housewives in the age of COVID before generating a suite of new Survivor themes for Josh's Extra Credit. Give yourself a treat: it's an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS
