For 96 days Auckland will be a city without a functioning rail network. The trains will come to a complete standstill so that ageing infrastructure can be upgraded or replaced. It comes ahead of the opening of the long-awaited the City Rail Link. Transport Minister Simeon Brown said the work will have a significant impact on passengers and freight in Auckland, but it's the one last push that's needed to get the CRL over the line. The rail network will be completely closed for a month after Christmas and for 16 days across Easter Weekend plus there are further closures of 2 to 4 days throughout next year until another long shutdown after Christmas 2025 - and scheduled to be complete by January 2026. Businesses spoken to by Checkpoint today were not impressed that they found out about the closures through the media and some fear the disruption will be disastrous for their bottom line. Desley Simpson, the Acting Mayor of Auckland spoke to Susana Lei'ataua.

"Home Rule Act" was passed by Congress in favor of the District of Columbia, composed by election of 1 Mayor and 13 Councilmembers, the majority of mayors have been men, and only 2 women, the first was Sharon Pratt in 1991, and the second Muriel Bowser the current mayor who has been the first woman to be re-elected, and she won her second re-election in the 2022 midterm general election, with more than 74.%, according to the current results of the DC board of election, this It had happened only once in the city with Marion Barry in 1986, who has been the only one to serve 4 terms in the so-called "CHOCOLATE CITY", where all the mayors have been black people. Mayor Bowser has empathy for DC residents because she has worked hard for good progress in the city and she is a worthy representative of women, especially black women in United States politics. I feel very proud of her. (60-second story) “HOME RULE ACT” The Council of the District of Columbia is the legislative branch of local government established by the “District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973”, enacted by CONGRESS, and ratified by District voters. The Council is composed of a chairman elected at large and twelve Members–four of whom are elected at large, and one from each of the district's eight wards. A Member is elected to serve a four-year term. Finally, in 1973, the Home Rule Act passed in Congress, and District residents approved it in a special referendum the next year. In a historic leap for greater self-determination, District citizens elected a Mayor and Council in the fall of 1974. Voters also approved the election of Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners who represent every 2,000 residents to advise the Council on neighborhood concerns. Citizens embraced the new Home Rule government as more representative of the local citizenry and more responsive to their needs. The powers and duties of the Council are comparable to those held by the state, county, and city legislatures, including the authority to adopt laws and to approve the District's annual budget submitted by the Mayor. As the legislature, the Council is a co-equal branch of government and is part of a system of checks and balances similar to any other state government. When the Office of Mayor is vacant, the Chairman of the Council becomes the Acting Mayor. (1) Source: 1 https://dccouncil.gov/dc-home-rule/

The Great Gildersleeve (1941-1957), initially written by Leonard Lewis Levinson, was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. Built around Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a character who had been a staple on the classic radio situation comedy Fibber McGee and Molly, The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest success in the 1940s. Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off and later in a quartet of feature films released at the height of the show's popularity. On Fibber McGee and Molly, Peary's Gildersleeve was a pompous windbag who became a consistent McGee nemesis. "You're a haa-aa-aa-aard man, McGee!" became a Gildersleeve catch phrase. The character was given several conflicting first names on Fibber McGee and Molly, and on one episode his middle name was revealed as Philharmonic. Gildy admits as much at the end of "Gildersleeve's Diary" on the Fibber McGee and Molly series (10/22/40). He soon became so popular that Kraft Foods - looking primarily to promote its Parkay margarine spread sponsored a new series with Peary's Gildersleeve as the central, slightly softened, and slightly befuddled focus of a lively new family.

In this episode intern Emma Young had a chance to interview John Cooper, candidate for Mayor of Nashville. The Nashville Municipal Election will be held August 1. Learn more about the candidates running for office in your community at www.Vote-USA.org! Narration Transcription In the coming weeks, Nashvillians and citizens of Davidson County will go to the polls to vote in a variety of races including Mayor. Early voting starts July 12th and goes through July 27th. Election day is Thursday, August 1st. The candidates for Mayor this August 1st are a diverse crowd. There are nine candidates in total, with four having ran in the 2018 Special General Election for Mayor and three having held office previously. The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County’s city charter, created in 1963, stipulates that, to run for Mayor, a candidate must be 30 years of age at the beginning of the term, must have lived in Davidson County for at least three years prior to the election, and must live in the county during their term as Mayor. The Mayor serves a term of four years, and is a nonpartisan position. This is an at-large position that will represent all of Nashville and Davidson County. On election day, if any one candidate receives a majority, or greater than half, of the votes cast in the election, then this candidate will become the new Mayor. However, if no candidate receives a majority of the vote, then there will be a runoff election between the two with the most votes in a September 2019 Runoff Election. Whichever candidate that wins the most votes in the runoff election will become the next Mayor. The Mayor makes a salary of $180,000 per year. Current mayoral candidates will be running to unseat the incumbent David Briley who took office in 2018 as the Metro Government’s 8th Mayor. Mayor Briley rose to this position in an unusual fashion by first serving as the Acting Mayor following the resignation of Former Mayor Megan Barry and by later winning the Special General Election to become Mayor. While mayor’s normally serve a four year term, the Special General Election of 2018’s purpose was to fill the remaining year of Former Mayor Barry’s four year term which began in 2015. Therefore, Mayor Briley will only serve for one year as Mayor before having to run for reelection for another term. While Mayor Briley won the Special General Election with 54.4% of the vote, avoiding a runoff election, the crowded field of eight challengers will certainly not make reelection easy. Today we speak with one of these challengers: John Cooper. Mr. Cooper was first elected to public office in 2015 as one of Nashville’s five Metro Council at large representatives. During his time in office, he has worked to save public lands and to ensure the Metro government is spending taxpayer’s money well. Notably, largely through his efforts and dedication as an at-large councilman, Ft. Negley Park was saved from being sold off for private development. Prior to his work on the council, Mr. Cooper was involved in banking, real-estate, and retail business. Now let’s hear from Councilman Cooper himself.

Chapter 1
Shelley Carroll has been active in Toronto municipal politics for nearly 20 years, first as a school board trustee, then as a city Councillor, even serving as acting mayor during the Sunrise Propane Explosion of 2008. In this episode of the podcast, she sits down with Michael to talk about the importance of municipal government and its underrated role in daily life. The conversation moves from there to local news and on to community building and then how to operate and engage in an ethnically and culturally diverse city. Any discussion of Toronto politics inevitably turns to the ongoing City vs Province conflicts, and Shelley shares what she learned from Berlin city-state politics. Michael asks about the role of social media in politics; local news is failing and it becomes a duty for politicians to use any platform to communicate what their goals and activities are to their constituents. This leaves them open to the abuse that these platforms can allow. There may be a solution to both of these problems but it is going to take demands from government and the clientele of these social media companies to see real change. The discussion does delve into the specifics of Shelley’s career, but each event spins into a broader topic. Her role as budget chief turns to how backroom deals between Councillors don’t really happen, and how friendships and cliques get left at the budget committee door. Her time as Acting Mayor was a scheduling accident that started off with jokes around the office, then turned catastrophic. And we learn how a team of B and C string staffers can respond under duress. Her tenure on the Toronto Police Service’s board leads to community policing and navigating controversial policies. Sitting on the Transit Commission is about interference in operations, and arguing for what makes sense. The Liberal Party of Ontario and of Canada are in a crisis of identity, as support for the centre positions are eroding. Shelley is still committed to the party’s values and hopes that they can regain the confidence of the people. Good leadership goes unnoticed everywhere, but let’s not lose track of any of the leadership in local government.
