Most people see investing as just stocks and numbers, but the world's greatest investors approach it differently. Their biggest lessons go beyond money—they're about how to think, make smarter decisions, and live a richer life. William Green, bestselling author of Richer, Wiser, Happier, has interviewed over 50 legendary investors, including Charlie Munger, Howard Marks, and Sir John Templeton. Along the way, he's uncovered powerful insights that apply not just to investing but to leadership, business, and personal growth. In this episode, William shares what leaders can learn from investors about making better decisions, avoiding costly mistakes through inversion thinking, and applying the power of compounding to knowledge, relationships, and habits. He reveals why mastering emotions matters more than mastering money, why intuition is just as critical as data, and how knowing your circle of competence helps you focus on playing games you're equipped to win and knowing your limits. We also explore how ethical leadership isn't just the right thing to do—it's a long-term advantage, and long-term success is often tied to integrity, self-awareness, and learning from both wins and failures.   ________________ Start your day with the world's top leaders by joining thousands of others at Great Leadership on Substack. #576: The world's greatest investors have a secret: they're weird.  When one young fund manager met Bill Miller for the first time, he refused to shake hands. Instead, he locked eyes and declared: "I'm going to beat you, man." William Green joins us to share what he's learned from decades of conversations with investing legends — from the hyper-competitive to the deeply philosophical.  These conversations reveal that success isn't just about strategy; it's about understanding yourself and playing to your strengths. The best investors are mavericks who think differently. They're willing to look strange, be lonely, and diverge from the crowd. Templeton demonstrated this during WWII. When Germany invaded France and markets crashed, he bought 104 stocks trading under $1 — including 37 bankrupt companies. His contrarian bet paid off 5x when markets recovered. But Green emphasizes this isn't just about getting rich.  His decades of interviews reveal deeper wisdom about building a good life: Great investors focus on what they can control. They can't predict markets, but they can manage their behavior and emotions. They embrace simplicity. Jack Bogle advocated owning low-cost index funds rather than chasing complex strategies. They understand odds and risk. Howard Marks asks "What's the consequence if I'm wrong?" before making decisions. They play to their strengths. Charlie Munger says if you're 5'3", don't try to be a pro basketball player. They live below their means. As investor Tom Gaynor notes, "If you're living within your means, you're already rich." Green shares a practical framework called HALT PS — don't make important decisions when Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, in Pain, or Stressed. This applies beyond investing to daily life. The conversation explores how to build resilience before market crashes through healthy habits, self-awareness, and preparation. Green notes that many successful investors practice meditation and read widely across disciplines. Even legends make mistakes. Bill Miller saw his assets drop from $77 billion to $800 million during the 2008 crisis. But he rebounded by staying true to his principles and learning from failure. Green's key message? Focus less on getting rich and more on building an "anti-fragile" life aligned with your values and strengths.  The best investors aren't just good at making money — they're skilled at creating lives of meaning and purpose. The best investors are not investors at all. They're entrepreneurs who have never sold. — Nick SleepNick Sleep's letters are a masterclass on the importance of understanding the underlying reality of a business — what he calls the engine of its success.I read all 110,000 words of Nick's letters (twice!) to make this episode and what I found most important is Nick's ability to develop a deep understanding of “honestly run compounding machines” (like Costco and Amazon) years before everyone else.Nick explains clearly how Jim Sinegal and Jeff Bezos set up their companies for long term success —from the very beginning — and gives us a few hints along the way on how we can do the same in our business. And the absolute entrepreneurial history nerd in me loved the references to Henry Ford, Sam Walton, Rockefeller and other greats from the past that are sprinkled throughout Nick's letters. No surprise that someone who was able to make $2 billion for his clients has a deep understanding of the great work that came before him.If you want to read all of Nick Sleep's partnership letters you can do so here for freeYou can also read William Green's book Richer, Wiser, Happier: How The World's Greatest Investors Win In Markets and Life —which both Nick and I recommend. In this solo episode Stories from the River, host Charlie Malouf dives into the concept of the power of compounding and its significance across various domains of life, including personal growth, professional development, and investing. He begins by posing a thought-provoking scenario: choosing between $1 million up front or a penny that doubles every day for 30 days. Through this example, he illustrates the astounding effects of compounding, which can turn a seemingly insignificant amount into more than $5 million in a month. He relates this back to his previously discussed theme of consistency, emphasizing how small, disciplined actions over time can yield exponential results. Throughout the episode, Charlie references notable works and figures such as Albert Einstein, Jim Collins, and Warren Buffet to underpin his points. He explains concepts like the 20 Miles March discipline from Collins' books, where consistent, moderate progress can lead to both short-term goals as well as significant long-term achievements. He also refers to authors like Mark Batterson (who highlights the importance of consistent daily actions in his books "Win the Day" and "Do It For a Day") and William Green (who espouses the virtues of compounding from the world's greatest investors in his book "Richer, Wiser, Happier").  Concluding with encouragement for listeners to adopt a disciplined, consistent approach, Charlie underscores that such steadfast behavior will ultimately lead to astonishing compounded gains, both in the short term and over a long period.
