We probably don't need to tell you who Deadbeat is. (He even did a previous RA Podcast for us, all the way back in 2007.) But if you need a refresher, he's one of the most important and revered artists in dub techno. The Canadian artist came up in the Montreal scene alongside other trailblazers like Akufen and other Canadians (think Cobblestone Jazz, Mathew Jonson, Wagon Repair, etc). His early records for ~scape are some of the most classic and influential minimal there ever was, but dub is always at the heart of his work, and runs in the veins of BLKRTZ, the prolific label he runs himself. Sa Pa, on the other hand, sits somewhere in the ambient zone. Originally from Adelaide, he's found a powerful creative sparring partner in Deadbeat. The two released their first album together, The Mountain, earlier this year. It's the 50th release on BLKRTZ and maybe one of the most monumental records in either artist's catalogue, a triple-LP that harks back to the hypnotic, plink-plonk days of yore with the strong cross-genre underpinning that marks Deadbeat's work these days, and plenty of lovely atmospheric wiggles. The duo's lengthy RA Podcast, taken from two different recordings at their Absurd Dub Lustre party in Berlin, mirrors the LP's sound, weaving through tracks new and old. It's full of warm, dubby vibrations and smooth transitions. Read more: http://ra.co/podcast/836 @sapaofficial

Ok friends of the night, the second year in a row in an incredibly difficult and seemingly extremely unstable time is very soon coming to an end. And thus also one in which nightlife seems to be emotionally lost to us. So today, more than ever, it is important to hold on to every little spark of culture. After a short euphoria in the last few weeks when some clubs started to reopen their doors, they now have to close again, which doesn't make the situation any better. That's why I'm personally glad that so many are continuing on their way and tirelessly keeping the roots and the shoots of our musical culture alive, and I'm personally grateful to everyone for that. Only together can we continue to shape the future musically. And since we're on the subject of culture, let's move on to today's guest, although there are actually two of them again. On the one hand, Andy Vaz, whose unbelievably fantastic and deep sound forms the basis of today's guest DJ set, is supported by Andreas Pasternack, who also enhances the whole thing in a great way with his saxophone. For me, Andy is one of the great music makers in Germany. Now living in Cologne, he started his musical career in the nineties from Düsseldorf. Since '98 he has been personally responsible for several labels and all of them are characterised by deep and minimal techno and house sound. Starting with "Background Records" which released 50 releases between 98 and 2006, featuring a wide variety of great artists, including Akufen, Sutekh, Jan Jelinek, Terrence Dixon and many more. In '99 he founded the sub-label "A Touch of Class", which was known for deep house. From 2000 to 2002 came the short-lived sub-label "Deep Night Essentials" which was known more for minimal techno. And since 2007 he has been running "Yore Records" together with "Alessandro Vaccaro", which is still active today and focuses more on house music by artists such as Rick Wade, Chez Damier, Patrice Scott or Alton Miller. Since 2001 he has already toured 7 times in Japan and performed for the Goethe Institute in numerous Indian cities.  Andreas Pasternack is a jazz musician, entertainer, singer and composer. He has performed in Poland, Belgium, Japan and the USA. He creates his own weekly radio show on NDR 1 Radio MV. And so I feel really honoured that he is giving this ESOA podcast edition with Andy Vaz a cultural first class upgrade.     Ok, so I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Friends, this is ESOA Podcast 043 by Andy Vaz b2b Andreas Pasternack.  Enjoy listening to this edition. Thank you for your tireless interest on the ESOA Podcast format. For our fourth edition of the Equilibrisme Podcast Series we proudly present you Altitude / Matt Thibideau. Matt Thibideau is a Canadian producer, who has been involved in making electronic music since the late 90s. Originally from Wallaceburg, a small town located close to Detroit, and now based in Toronto, his first records as Altitude were released on Blue Recordings. Quickly, he began contributing to other local labels such as Chair and Cynosure Recordings. In 2001, he started together with his twin brother Mark, a new project called “Repair” It was dedicated to all of the old broken synthesizers that they had in their studio. The first songs were quickly signed to both Sub-Static records (Germany) as “V-Wreck” and then Dumb-Unit records as “Black Line Display”. Matt has performed live at several venues and festivals and focuses on using Analog and Digital hardware without a laptop. Throughout Matt’s Career, he has performed with the likes of Monolake, Deadbeat, Mike Shannon, Mathew Johnson, Daniel Bell, Krihan, S.I.T., Mike Huckaby, Octave One, Christina Sealy (Orphyx), Molly, Barbara Preisinger, Falko Brocksieper, Nicholas Jar, Eric Miller, Pantone, Akufen, Audio Werner, Raresh, Deepchord, Vera and Isolee amongst many others. Matt & Mark started a small label called “Obsolete Components” based on using his old synthesizers and recording equipment. They were also featured in the documentary “I Dream Of Wires”. Recently Matt has released both old and new music under the moniker “Altitude” for 7th city (Detroit), Assemble and Helena records , Vade Mecum and Irenic. In early 2018 Matt and Mark released a joined record for Joule Imprint in France called “Two sides” that followed a remix on Sushitech for Rhauder and Tikiman called “Stabilize”. This hardware only live cut was recorded 2019 in Toronto for our Equilibrisme Podcast Series. Enjoy!!!

It is amazing really that it has taken the passage of 25 Avenue Red Podcast episodes before we came to present a DJ/Artist from Germany, especially when we consider it's prominence on the underground music map and the colossal amount of quality music the country emits. And here is installment 26 from Cologne-based DJ, producer, label boss and radio show host Andy Vaz. Originally from Düsseldorf where Kraftwerk originated, Andy is the man behind Background Records, a label that since it's incarnation in 1998 became a key conduit of the true Minimal Techno sound with a release catalogue that is steeped in stripped down, dark and undeniably hypnotic techno - often with some more experimental materials in the mix too. Artists such as: Akufen, Sutekh, Jan Jelinek, Todd Sines, Terrence Dixon, Jeff Milligan, Submania, Rhythm Maker, Kit Clayton, Ectomorph, Deadbeat, Baby Ford, Stewart Walker, Donnacha Costello, Geoff White, Smyglyssna, Portable, Frivolous and many others have graced the Background stage. But Andy Vaz was not one to build his career in electronic music in the bounds of a genre-purist, even though Background was in itself a very clinical and defined brand of techno minimalism. Having always had an equal appreciation for house music too, Andy decided to start a second label called A Touch Of Class in 1999 for the housier shades of music that he wanted to purvey, with the first release an absolute classic - Rick Wade's "Deep Threats EP". In march 2007 Andy launched another label called YORE, which is his ongoing label project to focus on the authentic old-skool Detroit & Chicago House sound with original artists such as Chez Damier, Terrence Dixon, Todd Sines, Alton Miller and again Rick Wade featured on this growing platform. Andy is also very versatile as an artist, having released minimal techno works, obscure oddities, straight-up house music, and has released some conceptual works too in the form of his Soundvariation series (recommended!). Andy is actually the man behind the latest YORE record too with his new EP "It's OK" (YRE-031), the lead track from which opens this mix. The release is due soon, but for now you can hear the preview for the whole EP here: https://soundcloud.com/andyvaz/andy-vaz-its-ok-yre-031-12-preview. We decided to invite Andy to the Avenue Red Podcast after hearing him play on his weekly Saturday night House Of Hope radio shows on Motion FM, as we realised what a truly entertaining, varied and colourful selector he is. In this mix Andy has dug through his record collection to pull out a very groovy and uplifting set of NY House, Garage, Chicago Acid and also some nice, deep Disco-tinged House music with a kind of party feel to it. But the set has real depth, showing Andy to be a DJ with a vastness of musical knowledge that, coupled with his proven passion and experience, means he really knows how to "work it" on the decks! Enjoy the mix everyone! "Taking you back like it's '95!" ATOM - prend et mois - rather interesting MIKE SHANNON BIOGRAPHY   It’s been 10 years since Mike Shannon started making a name for himself on the international techno scene as a DJ, producer and label owner. Now, having relocated to Berlin from Valencia via Montreal in 2007 he’s about to crown his first decade of active service with Memory Tree, his third full length to date, and his debut for another notable Canadian export - Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 Records. Over the years, Mike has well proven that it’s not just his music that makes him such a valuable asset to the techno community, it’s his total dedication to the cause. Whether finding him standing behind a record shop counter or searching out new talent for his labels, it’s always been about bringing people together and investing in the future of the scene.   Mike first got the vinyl bug at the tender age of 12, buying house and techno tunes at Play de Record in Toronto and by 15 his turntable skills were already landing him gigs at local underground parties and clubs. From then on, Mike’s musical world expanded rapidly thanks in no small part to Detroit’s influential WJLB radio station which turned him on to U.R., Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson - influences that still play a big role in his approach to music today. To satisfy his appetite for all things Techno, he was soon managing the orders at Speed Records in his hometown of Kitchener, Ontario where he continued his education; importing cutting edge sounds from across Europe.  Throughout that time, Mike was out DJing and clubbing from Detroit to Toronto, making connections and building up a solid network of producers and artists, which led to the inevitable formation of his own label Cynosure in 1999. A couple of years later, he teamed up with Jeff Milligan on the more experimental Revolver Canada imprint. Both labels have since developed into highly respected and trusted sources, subsequently raising the profile of Canada’s electronic music scene by providing then unknown producers such as Akufen and Deadbeat an international platform to spread their distinctive sound throughout the world. Beyond developing homegrown talent, both imprints continue to invite an inspired selection of international artists including Pier Bucci, Monolake and Brett Johnson to name a few.   For Mike it’s always been a question of choosing uncompromising artists who possess a unique and original voice - an attitude that also defines his own work whether recording as John Shananigans, The Sunaj Assassins or under his own name. There’s a distinctive feel to his music that’s both dark and soulful, that stays true to his roots while embracing the future and never fails to deliver a flurry of kick-ass, funk infected beats easily proven by a volley of timeless singles over the years and two previous full lengths. Take 2001’s Slight of Hand on Force Inc - an album that cemented his reputation as an up-and-coming Minimal Techno producer and 2005’s Possible Conclusions to Stories That Never End - a collection of chilled-out Electronica inspired by his musical odyssey throughout Chile in 2003.   Mike’s recent move to Berlin represents the fulfillment of another chapter in his musical career and with so many influential Canadian producers having taken up residence in the German capital over the last few years, it’s a chance to hook up with old friends again and start collaborating on new plans and ideas, just like the old days. Then of course there’s the new album, the accompanying remix projects and the immediate matter of fatherhood to make 2008 something of a milestone both professionally and personally.  Special Thanks to Mr Meike Nolte,Rudy Delgado & Richie Hawtin  http://www.m-nus.com/http://www.plus8.com/http://www.contakt-events.com/
