"There's a stigma about retiring from pro running, that it's this huge thing and it's so hard. And there are parts of it that are challenging. But I'm seriously so great. I'm loving life." Aisha Praught Leer is no stranger to the Ali on the Run Show. She returns today for her fifth appearance — but it's her first in this new phase of life. Last year, Aisha officially retired from professional running. The longtime Puma athlete, two-time Olympian, Commonwealth Games champion, and six-time Jamaican record holder is now embracing a career in corporate America, while also continuing to be an advocate for professional athletes, and working in front of the camera and on the mic with Citius Mag. In this episode, we're catching up on all of it, including how Aisha feels about that 9–5 life, what her relationship with running is like now that she's no longer competing professionally, and what it's actually like retiring from your dream job in your thirties — and figuring out what comes next. In this episode, we chat with JR Brandt of Montana, an acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) survivor, about his journey through diagnosis, treatment, and living with chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). JR shares his initial diagnosis story, describing how what he thought was a minor infection led to a leukemia diagnosis complicated by the Philadelphia Positive chromosome. He underwent 26 days of chemotherapy and was eventually cleared for a bone marrow stem cell transplant at Stanford University in March 2017.JR discusses the onset of chronic GVHD symptoms about a year after his transplant, beginning with skin changes. He was treated with Rituxan infusions, which provided temporary relief. Over the years, as symptoms re-emerged, JR continued Rituxan treatments and adjusted his care plan, even after moving from California to Montana. He highlights the importance of finding and continuing care with familiar healthcare professionals, like his physician who (fortunately) moved to Billings Clinic.Beyond skin issues, JR describes experiencing joint tightness, dry eyes, dysphagia, and dry mouth. He mentions practical solutions like using Biotene toothpaste for dry mouth and preservative-free Refresh Plus eyedrops for dry eyes. JR also shares the importance of physical and occupational therapy, which helped him develop a personalized exercise routine. Over time, he transitioned to aquatic aerobics and massage therapy, finding these methods more effective for managing his symptoms.JR emphasizes the significance of staying active, despite physical limitations, by adapting activities like biking with an e-bike and engaging in water aerobics. He also discusses the importance of sun protection and practical tips for managing GVHD symptoms, like using a sun hat and sunblock.JR addresses the mental health challenges of living with chronic illness, equating his experiences to PTSD and stressing the importance of setting goals and making plans to stay motivated. He shares how maintaining an active lifestyle and staying connected with his family helps him manage anxiety and stress. When discussing his career, JR explains how his background in healthcare was both a benefit and a challenge. He advises others with disabilities to utilize vocational rehabilitation services to explore new career paths. JR also encourages being your own patient advocate, ensuring all medical information is shared among healthcare providers to provide comprehensive care.JR concludes with the importance of using available resources, like the Americans with Disabilities Act, for mobility aids and other accommodations (link below). He highlights the need for continuous learning and resourcefulness in managing chronic GVHD and living life to the fullest. Products mentioned by JR in this episode:Refresh Eye Drops: https://www.refresheyedrops.com/Biotene for Dry Mouth: https://www.biotene.com/DaBrim Helmet/SunShade: https://dabrim.com/Oofos shoes: https://www.oofos.com/Mechanix Gloves: https://www.mechanix.com/Dycem Non-Slip tape: https://www.dycem-ns.com/Tryvaya (Prescription) Nasal Spray for Dry Eye: https://www.tyrvaya.com/Full list of Vocational Rehabilitation Agencies for all 50 states: https://rsa.ed.gov/about/statesAmericans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Requirements for Power-Driven Mobility Devices: https://www.ada.gov/resources/opdmds/This season is made possible thanks to donations from Syndax and Incyte.https://syndax.com/https://incyte.com/ Follow the nbmtLINK on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/nbmtlink/

There's nowhere I'd rather be on the third Monday in April than at the Boston Marathon finish line! This year, I was honored to be asked back to perform a variety of roles in Boston. I was one of the start and finish line announcers at the Boston 5K and invitational miles, I hosted three live shows, I was one of the race announcers at the finish on Marathon Monday, and I was the finish line reporter for the world feed broadcast. It was a fun, rewarding weekend that included quality time with my favorite people, one of my all-time favorite live events, a million finish line hugs, an interview with Rob Gronkowski, and so much more. "If I have to wash and return your Tupperware, I am now super stressed. I am so worried about the Tupperware." Let the Boston Marathon episodes begin! First up: a panel I moderated at the Oofos pop-up on Boylston Street called "Project Pink: Recover with Purpose." This panel was about running, about cancer, about hard stuff, and about resilience. We heard from Anne Keane, who is living with metastatic breast cancer, and was about to run her third Boston Marathon as part of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team. Dr. Nancy Lin, the associate chief of breast oncology at Dana-Farber, talked about whether runners are the best or worst patients, and talked about where fundraising dollars actually go. Maureen Key, the senior manager of performance design at Exos, talked about the importance of recovery and mindfulness. And Christine St. Pierre, who has been doing the Pan-Mass Challenge for 18 years now as the captain of Team Duncan, was on hand to convince all of us that we can — and should — do whatever we set our minds to. Thank you to Oofos for having us, and for the longtime partnership and commitment to raising funds for breast cancer research.  SPONSOR:  UCAN: Click here to get a FREE UCAN energy bar sample pack (you'll just pay the cost of shipping), and use code ALI for 20% off your next UCAN order. "I felt like I was constantly treading water and barely staying afloat. It felt like I was stuck, as everything else just raged on. Time doesn't stop and the world doesn't stop. Everything doesn't stop just because you're having a hard time. There were days where I'd be at the grocery store, standing in line, and I wanted to scream, 'Don't you all know that I have cancer? Don't you know this is the hardest day of my life, and it's a normal day in your life?' It's the ultimate reminder that you never know what someone's going through. So be kind." At long last: the big, long, TMI-filled cancer episode. After being diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, I've wanted to do regular check-ins on the podcast, but it's been a little daunting. One day last week, I finally felt up for chatting a bit. So in this episode, I'm talking about what life has looked like on the health front over the past seven months. I walk through my timeline from first lump (April 27) to mammogram and ultrasound (May 12) to biopsy (May 16) to diagnosis (May 19), followed by surgeries (double mastectomy July 3, reconstruction surgery August 30), chemotherapy (September 26, October 17, November 7, and November 27), and "now what?" “My parents are dancers, so I literally grew up in the studio. Ballet kind of goes hand in hand with my identity—I have always been Chyrstyn the ballet dancer. I didn't realize that until I had it taken away from me and I had to sit down and identify other things that I was interested in. Otherwise, what was I existing for? I think having the confidence of understanding a little bit more about what I want in life that's not just ballet, or what I represent more than just being a ballet dancer or being a pretty mover on stage, was helpful.”   Chyrstyn Fentroy is a principal dancer at the Boston Ballet—a vocation that's equal parts athletic and artistic. Dancing has been her passion since an early age, but when tendonitis in her ankles began worsening a few years ago, she found herself feeling like she was falling out of love.   As Chyrstyn explains in this week's episode, she had to do something—and the pandemic gave her the perfect opportunity, an enforced break in which she could have surgery (which she did as soon as restrictions on elective procedures were lifted).   Recovering in a time of lockdown was challenging, especially when the nation erupted in racial protests (which hit home for Chyrstyn, who's biracial). But with mental health support, patience, and cushy recovery footwear from Oofos—a brand she's so passionate about, she approached them, and is now part of their OOcrew ambassador program—she found a deeper purpose to her art and a broader view of her future, and came back mentally and physically stronger.   Resources/links: Chyrstyn's Instagram and her profile on the Boston Ballet website More of her story on the OOFOS website and in the New York Times More about OOFOS Thank you so much to our sponsors for season 6:  Fluid Running, which has revolutionized fitness by bringing running to the deep water IceeNOW.com, which provides innovative injury prevention and recovery solutions for athletes ADAM Rehabilitation, creators of the ADAM Brace System, the most stable exercise system built to save the health of your shoulders Learn more and access exclusive discount codes for their products at buymeacoffee.com/rebound or by joining The Injured Athletes Club Facebook group.   You can subscribe to The Injured Athletes Club on Spotify, Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, Audible, Amazon Music, or wherever you get your podcasts, and if you like what you hear, please leave us a rating or a review in Apple podcasts. The coldest temperature of the year couldn't even stop us from going and covering this long awaited event and boy ... cover it we did! The letter of the week is my favorite letter "M" and the word of the week is mindset. Our actions begin, first, in our minds as thoughts. Those thoughts become words, those words become actions, and ultimately change things in our lives. By thinking of, meditating on, and believing in our Godly desires, we enable ourselves to see those desires come to pass by first believing in them. Shifting our mindset is an exercise in hopefulness. Our prayer for the week is this:God, thank you for our minds. Thank you for your will for our lives, for your divine power, and for your faithfulness. Thank you, Lord, for the opportunity to align our thoughts and desires with yours. Help me to think about virtuous things. Help me to meditate on desires that are Godly. Allow me to be hopeful and to expect the goodness that I think of. In Jesus' name. Amen. And our practice commitment is this:This week, I will practice thinking good thoughts. I will commit to submitting those thoughts to God through prayer.A few other notes from the show:Here are the Olaplex Bond Maintenance products I love. Here's our always favorite the Calm AppAnd here are the uber-comfy Oofos shoes that Tennille mentionedLove, MaadenSupport the show

Can the decisions we make hurt us? Often times we think that walking away is only for our benefit of ourselves, however, in my guest's Aliscia Jacklyn case walking away was to ensure the safety and stability of my siblings. Ali thinks everyone can learn from that. Decisions to walk away do not have to have an outcome that benefits you. Now, when you walk away can you still make a choice to forgive even though the decisions hurt, can those decisions still bring healing? Join me as I try on Ali's Oofos sandals.

When Triathlete, Andy Blow, collapsed in the heat at KONA IRONMAN World Championships and was wheeled off the course by medics nearly a decade ago, it inspired his mission and quest for understanding exactly what went down, why, and how to find a solution for himself and the thousands of endurance athletes that have experienced similar issues and he has done just that ( and more!) with his company, Precision Fuel & Hydration  which helps athletes personalize their hydration and fueling strategies so they can perform at their best. And, their nutrition and hydration supplements are one of the top, sought after brands of gels, chomps and hydration on the endurance sports scene today We caught up in St. George Utah, LIVE from our studio in the OOFOS Recovery lounge where I discovered the products for the first time, got the scoop from Andy on where it all began, how he has grown the company, and where its going. I also had the opportunity to experience the Advance Sweat Test from his team, Learned that I am a low salt sweater  and got a very dialed hydration plan to guide me on how much electrolytes I need for racing, training, recovery which I have been following ever since, and some seriously great educations on the reasons why thanks to the Knowledge Hub on their website. I LOVE these products; the hydration tablets and chomps are my new go-to's. "She's my person." Silvana Morgan is a nurse, a runner, and a mom to two daughters. A few years ago, she was running a race when she saw a fellow runner up ahead wearing "a really cute outfit." But when the course split — half marathoners to the left, other race distances to the right — Silvana, who is from Brazil and says she's now living her dream with her family in New Hampshire, didn't get a chance to meet that runner and tell her she liked her outfit. That runner, it turned out, was commercial truck driver, marathoner, and outdoor enthusiast Yuma Haidara. Later that day, Yuma posted about her race in New Hampshire's She Runs This Town Facebook group. Silvana saw the post, recognized the woman in the photo as the woman from the race, and a friendship was born. The two — now best friends — have been inseparable ever since.
