In this episode of "Democracy Nerd," Jefferson is joined by Andrea Grimes, an independent journalist whose writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Texas Observer, and DAME Magazine. The episode includes an in-depth discussion about the current state of American media and its role in safeguarding democracy, sparked by a recent statement from New York Times' Executive Editor Joe Kahn, who asserted that threats to democracy are "one" of the issues the Times will cover, though "not the only one." Jefferson and Andrea critically examine whether the media is adequately fulfilling its democratic duty. They explore how the content of broadcast media often fails to reflect the true realities across the United States, highlighting the disconnect between what is reported and what is actually happening on the ground. This leads to a broader conversation about alternative media models that could better serve the public interest beyond the prevailing capitalist framework. Andrea also provides an update of her home state of Texas, sharing stories of numerous engaged activists determined to drive change, embodying the spirit of "messing with Texas." Jefferson and Andrea's discussion provides a thought-provoking dialogue on the intersection of media, politics, and grassroots activism, emphasizing the critical role that an informed and engaged citizenry plays in maintaining democratic principles.

Abortion stigma is real, y’all! It can be scary, intimidating and anxiety-inducing to talk positively about abortion -- which is why Traitor Radio host Andrea Grimes launched the Taco or Beer Challenge, a month-long fundraising movement to support abortion access. It's the most delicious homework assignment we've given you on the show so far. Our storyteller on this episode is Aimee Arrambide, a badass reproductive justice crusader, lawyer and Texan of Mexican and Filipino descent who is part of We Testify, a group of storytellers working to bust abortion stigma. Aimee’s story is about abortion, of course, but it’s about so much more: It’s about her mental health journey, her professional career, and her relationship with her father -- who was also an abortion provider. Aimee’s story beautifully weaves her abortion experience into the larger fabric of her life -- she talks about what an important  decision it was for her, and how essential it was that she had access to abortion during a time in her life when, as she’ll tell you, she was approaching “rock bottom.” Listen, then take the Taco or Beer Challenge by eating a taco or drinking a beer (or both) and donating to your local abortion fund.

After a years-long battle wherein Methodist church officials publicly interrogated M Barclay's private life, including their gender identity and sexuality, M Barclay is now Reverend M Barclay, the first openly non-binary queer and trans person to be commissioned as a deacon in the United Methodist Church. Today, M is able to provide a visible and enthusiastically queer ministry to people of faith, but that wasn't the case a year ago, when M stood amid the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub attack in Orlando, Florida, desperate but unable, within the confines of their own church doctrine, to do what they knew they had been called to do in that moment: Minister to queer people in grief. Not because M wasn't faithful, not because M wasn't educated, not because M didn't know how, but because, the church said, M's sexuality prevented them from inviting others into the presence of God. On this episode of Traitor Radio, M gives listeners a heartfelt, and often heartbreaking, first-person look into their journey to ministry and, on the second half of the show, talks with host Andrea Grimes about how people of faith can make their own church communities places where queer and trans people -- especially queer and trans children -- can flourish. Our first episode tackles the most ubiquitous of bro country narratives: the country boy who woos a sophisticated lady away from the city with his down-home charm. Discussion includes an essay by Jocelyn R. Neal, Billy Currington's "Good Directions," Justin Moore's "Bait a Hook" and the Dixie Chicks' "Cowboy Take Me Away."

In brief:My regular feminist round-up spot with Justice! Note: I'm a writer and radio host full time, providing much of my content for free. If you can, consider supporting my work by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you! Overview: Justice and I talked the latest on the Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado Springs as well as how people can get involved — and how not to help. I suggested several organizations, including The Clinic Vest Project where I am a founding board member, and reminded people not to just show up in front of a clinic to counter protest or escort without contacting the clinic. I got a little choked up talking about what abortion providers go through. Dr. Willie Parker, one of the most public, vocal providers, is asking people not to be silent. It is the least we can do considering he and other providers risk arson, stalking, assault, and even death to make sure we have health care. Please read and post his op-ed and the interview with Dr. Chastine included below. Organizations to support: Donate & contact to volunteer: The Clinic Vest Project Donate & find your local fund to volunteer: The National Network of Abortion Funds Donate & follow to support independent abortion providers: The Abortion Care Network Links to on-air references: My piece on the shooting at The Establishment: "Targeted Attacks On Abortion Providers Is Domestic Terrorism” "For Robert Dear, Religion and Rage Before Planned Parenthood Attack” via The New York Times My review of Cohen & Connon’s book: "‘Living in the Crosshairs’ Puts Human Face on Grim Clinic Violence Statistics” SHARE: "Why I Provide Abortions” by Dr. Willie Parker at The New York Times SHARE: "An Abortion Provider Speaks Out: 'I'll Do Whatever My Conscience Tells Me I Must’” by Andrea Grimes at RollingStone The easy download/stream and additional text description/info/video/audio is available at the Guest Media Spot Archive tab on my website. If you can, consider supporting my work by becoming a patron at PATREON or making a one-time donation through PAYPAL. Thank you! Overview: We covered a fair amount today! We talked disappointing midterm results — as per usual as the right-wing turns people out and gears up their fear machine with well-funded precision. I also gave some much-deserved love to Margaret Cho who tweeted about her past as a sex worker and why she is the literal opposite of ashamed about it. Then I tied sex worker rights to abortion rights — a very short leap and both are fundamentally about bodily autonomy and economic justice/independence.
