“Why are so many trans people into urban planning?” That's the question independent journalist and co-host of the Cancel Me, Daddy podcast Katelyn Burns asked her Bluesky followers, and she got an overwhelming response. Katelyn wrote up some of those answers in a recent piece on The Flytrap, the feminist media outlet she recently co-founded and launched. It's a thought-provoking read. We talked with Katelyn about the safety that trans people can find in dense cities, the “trans on trains” meme, and what the game Cities: Skylines has to do with all of this. And she discusses how the trans perspective can illuminate problems and solutions within urban systems. ***Our new book, Life After Cars, will be published on October 21, 2025 by Thesis, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Why should you care about private equity? It is affecting all of us in the U.S., even if we don't realize it. Private equity money promises to invest in a growing list of our workplaces, often to sell them off for parts. Journalist Megan Greenwell knows this experience all too well as the former editor-in-chief of Deadspin, the acclaimed sports website that experienced private equity's familiar slash-and-burn cycle. And the cycle doesn't stop with our livelihoods, Greenwell writes in her forthcoming book, Bad Company: Private Equity and the Death of the American Dream. Our lives—our hospitals, our housing, our food, and our water—are increasingly under the control of private equity. This week, Greenwell joins Katelyn and Christine to define the problem that spans presidencies and propose solutions that will outlast the ever-tightening broligarchy. A new Supreme Court case, United States v. Skrmetti, will challenge Tennessee's Senate Bill 1, which prohibits gender-affirming care for transgender minors. Katelyn Burns, columnist for MSNBC, first ever openly trans Capitol Hill Reporter, co-host of the podcast Cancel Me Daddy, and co-founder of the publication the Flytrap, sits down to talk with us about this case and what realities the trans community will face under the new administration. Tennessee's law would ban best practice medical care for trans youth up to 18, require youth being treated to cease care within nine months of the law's effect, and allow for private right of action against medical providers providing gender-affirming care. This specific case is aimed toward transgender minors but will be used as an entry point to target adult care, too. This is on top of extremely likely increases to attacks to transgender folks' health and rights under the incoming Trump administration, bolstered already by harmful cabinet nominees. Chappell Roan's cancellation by a certain set of voters got us thinking: When do fandoms become toxic? How does “stanning” an artist, a politician, or a (literal) piece of work disproportionately push people who already live at the margins of our culture out of the culture entirely? This week, Katelyn and Christine nerd out on nerd culture's historically toxic fandoms with Jessie Earl, aka Jessie Gender, the YouTube essayist who hosts two popular channels. Together, they try to find the “nuance in the nerdy,” from the “Lord of the Rings” to the 2024 presidential election. And “Your Ombudsmom,” Christine's media critic alter ego, returns with her new regular segment. Stay tuned for out of context cancellations from Katelyn and Christine! In breaking news: You did it! The Flytrap is fully funded, thanks in no small part to our loyal Cancel Me, Daddy listeners! Thank you! New York placed Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi “on leave” after the magazine Washington correspondent admitted to an inappropriate relationship with former presidential candidate RFK Jr.—sexting while covering the 2024 campaign. This week, Katelyn and Christine discuss the unfolding media scandal with equal parts humor and smart analysis, drawing from each of their experiences as Washington reporters themselves. They turn their criticism to the media gatekeepers—WTF is wrong with all of the prominent journalists caping for Nuzzi with the enthusiasm she's poured into tradfascs in her coverage and on the website formerly known as Twitter? After recording, Nuzzi asserted in a court filing that her ex-fiancé, Ryan Lizza, former alleged New Yorker sex pest turned Politico bigwig, engaged in a blackmail campaign against her, allegedly exposing her online affair to New York leadership. Lizza has since been suspended by Politico, pending an investigation. I seldom say something like that, but chris' propensity to always be himself, and in a manner, injecting a new revitalized "fly fishing is for all walks of life" approach, is a surefire way to ensure the longevity of our passion and fishery.

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/344 Presented By: Stonefly Nets, Dette Flies Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Phil Montano, owner and inventor of the Fly Trap Holder, tells us the story behind creating some of the most innovative and inexpensive fly fishing gear on the market today. Phil's goal is to make life easier on the water, doing "actual fishing" rather than just digging through the fly box or doing anything else that just eats up your time while fishing. Find out how one's frustration can lead to an awesome idea that solves problems for many others out there. Fly Trap Holder Show Notes with Phil Montano 03:30 – The Fly Trap started from Phil's frustration of getting all the fly fishing accessories organized 08:30 – You can have multiple cylinders for different types of flies 10:30 – The Fly Trap uses a no-fail carabiner 12:30 – His product doesn't eliminate the need for a fly box – the main purpose is to lessen the digging and have everything in front of you 18:50 - We noted Lid Rig - we had Scott Wilday, founder of Lidrig, in episode 250 21:15 - We talk about the Magnifly which also has a magnet for flies - Phil calls them the "on-deck" flies. You can clip this to your hat. 27:30 - There are 2 different cylinders for the Fly Trap. The new one has a 6-rig cylinder 30:15 - Ben Sittig talked about the things you don't need for fly fishing in episode 223 - it's a bit of comedy 31:39 - The biggest win for Phil is the feedback - he loves it when people tell him how his products work great for them 35:10 - I did an unboxing video of the Fly Trap - scroll down to watch that video! 37:15 - Phil is a Graphic Designer by trade - he's been doing it for over 32 years 39:20 - Phil's Top Fly is a Beadhead Pheasant Tail Nymph - enter your Top Fly here and get a chance to win a box of flies from JH Fly Co 42:30 - One of Phil's favorite documentary films is Dogtown and Z-Boys 43:20 - Henry Winkler was on the podcast recently at WFS 334 Fly Trap Holder Conclusion with Phil Montano So there you go. I hope this episode inspired you to see problems differently. Problems could lead to a brilliant solution waiting to be discovered. I think Phil and his team are doing an amazing job developing products that help a lot of anglers. I know because I've been using his Fly Trap Holder since 2018 and I love it! On this episode we share some insight on good--and bad stuff--we've purchased (i.e. stocks, businesses, real estate, etc.) that was cheap and give advice on how to avoid the trap!
